  • I’ve read Dd. Lustig’s books, and, have researched the “controversy” surrounding him in some circles. This much I know: before I ever heard of this individual, I dropped sugar 100%, and all of my electrolytes, blood pressure, all lipid panel values immediately crashed well into the “normal” range after many years of being highly obese–and did so within weeks. So, as to the controversy, I view Dr. Lustig as follows: he may be right for the right reasons, and he may be right for the wrong reasons, but, make no mistake, he. is. right.

  • Since 12th February 2023,I stopped eating 1. Table Sugar 2. Rice ( All types) 3. Bakery Products ( Refined Carbohydrates) 4. Flavored Drinks ( Nescafé, Nestea etc ) 5. Soda drinks ( Coca Cola, Sprite, Fanta etc..) & also adapted to a 12 hour Fasting at Night. Recorded Fasting Blood Glucose Every Morning and graphed with excel & monitored the fluctuations & managed to maintain it two months average of 96.5 mg/dl. Meanwhile I Increased intake of Protein (Chicken, Fish, Eggs,Salmon), Olive oil & Green Leafy Veggies (Mainly Cauliflower, Beans, Okra, Brokali & Parsley). During the day I had some milk with added coffee and dark chocolates ( 50% of Cocoa made in Sri Lanka) & occasionally had some curd with one or two teaspoons of Honey. My HBA1c dropped from 9.3 to 4.7 by 1 st May 2023 (Within exactly 78 days). ALT (AGST) dropped from 38.9 to 12.7. Weight lost 8.7 Kg. My BMI is exactly 22. I am so happy to bring down My HBA1c to None Diabetic level ( < 5.7) without any doctor fees, Prescription Drug Costs, Unnecessary Lab Report Fees & without time wasting. Meantime, I got my Lipid Profile, eGFR (Kidney Function Test), Complete Liver Profile, Full Blood Count & Specially the C - Peptide Report that measured the functionality of pancreas & all reports are almost perfect (No deviation from recommended values ). My special Thanks going to Prof. Robet Lustig, Jason Fung, Dr. Sten Ekberg, KenDBerryMD, My wife for preparing the delicious meals without Carbs and you also.

  • I call it a grocery cart problem. When I get to the checkout I see that 90% of the carts are full to the top with stuff that shocks the living smell out of me. I honestly don’t understand how anybody in this smart world with such easy access to stoves and pots and pans along with fresh, raw healthy food to indulge in, and yet the shoppers love their 24 packs of soda pop, beer, chips, dips, packaged white flour breakfast lunch and dinner crap. My cart has a small fresh farm in it! I’m 82, weigh 115 pounds. On no meds. I can walk all day, dance all night and run a small business. I am one in a million and it’s very lonely. Junk-food addicts just love the acceptance they get from loving brand names and their junk food-induced doctor-visit games. Doctors approve of your sick appetites. I wish I were wrong. But they’re all on meds and I’m not. So there you go! So sad..

  • This presentation was like reading a great mystery novel where the narrator of the story leads the reader through many twists to the final outcome. What are my take-aways? 1. Eliminate all added sugar. 2. Eliminate all processed, packaged, and refined foods. 3. Eat whole foods. 4. Eat grass-fed ruminant meat. 5. Eat wild salmon and sardines (high in omega 3). 6. Eat more Whole Foods rich in fiber. 7. Time restricted eating through fasting (autophagy).

  • Both my sister and her husband died of donut disease. I started Dr. Lustigs health philosophy several years before I discovered him to help myself for my combat PTSD. I’m living proof that he is correct in all regards. The nay sayers that criticize him are addicted to sugar and refuse to accept it. They are the current deniers as the tobacco/smokers of days gone by. Sooner or later they both will quit. One funeral at a time.

  • I wish I would’ve stopped eating carbs 50 years ago. I feel better, happy, less pain, more energy, younger, more strength, clearer thinking, better memory. Plaque deposits in the brain are now attributed to high insulin levels caused by high carbohydrate intake. I hope to reverse my slow brain. Good lecture.

  • Another great talk from Dr. Lustig. When I was in Toronto, I volunteered at The Stop community food garden. We would wheelbarrow over huge bins of fresh food to the food bank nearby once a week and the lineup would be down the street. People were so excited to get fresh food because they simply could not afford to get it elsewhere. Some of them were homeless and didn’t have access to refrigerators. It was a bittersweet feeling to be providing nutrient dense fresh good picked within a few hours in a “food dessert” located within a massive, expensive city. Some of these folks get the rest of their groceries from variety stores and gas stations. massive changes are desperately needed.

  • I am 70 and everyone I know eats organically, even my daughter her kids, and her friends. But the kids in her homeschool group still eat processed foods. My granddaughters understand the difference between eating good food versus junk food. They hardley ever eat sugar. I bring them organic cucumbers, orange peppers, and other things when I come to visit. You can raise kids to eat good even when they are exposed to other kids who do not. They even have their own stainless steele water bottles that they take everywhere. Please parents wake up!

  • Within a few months of going on a complex carb (mostly oatmeal and legumes), high veggie, low sugar eating plan, my cholesterol fell from familial hypercholesterolemia levels to normal, and my tryglycerides went from very high to normal. I dropped ten pounds, incidentally, though i wasn’t trying to. I still have quite a bit to lose, but my numbers are good, and I feel great! It seems hard to believe, with my long history of simple carb binging and metabolic syndrome, that it could change like that in a few months. Now I’m even more motivated after listening to Dr Lustig!

  • Thank you for your talk Dr Lustig! You’ve really pushed the envelope, and pushed some buttons high up the corporate food industry chain – thank you for this especially. Keep up the good work, after taking a well deserved R & R. Perhaps a spa somewhere sunny, relax by the sea, soak up some vitamin D, eat well! and enjoy long beach walks, siestas easy conversation. Time for your own self care (have been perusal you for years, and know you are driven . . .but before something snaps I recommend 6 months plus of VAYkay! ). You deserve this : )

  • I’ve been perusal many articles with Dr Lustig. The man knows his stuff. I think he’s great and the work he’s putting in can help us all get better. Well, the vast majority that is. Thank you again for this inside information about fructose, highly processed foods and simple starches. We really have to ban them out of our diets.

  • I always read ingredients labels. I knew things like high fructose corn syrup were bad, but having switched from a low fat/high carb diet to a high fat/low carb diet – and losing 30lbs in two months – I now look at all the corn syrup and sugar and seed oils in most food and wonder if food manufacturers are trying to kill us.

  • After listening to hundreds of articles on different diets I decided to be in the safe side and follow my own diet How to increase HDL/How to lower LDL/lower triglycerides 1- More Omega-3 sardines marckel Eat fish at least 3 times a week and flaxseeds 2- unsaturated fats olive oil avocado oil Nuts 3- foods rich in soluble fiber and cruciferous vegetables 4- more fish and chicken and less of read meat (saturated fats) 5- berries green apple avocado Avoid sugar and refined carbs

  • I’m incredibly grateful for a health breakdown a few years ago that caused me to no longer be able to eat ultra processed foods- they cause me horrendous pain. I turned to real food and now eat an organic fresh wholefoods diet, no alcohol, no smoking and I feel strangely lucky my body forced me to do this before I became metabolically unhealthy. The only gap in my diet has been Omega 3’s as healthy fat also causes pain but I’ve been working on eating more salmon and it’s given my previously poor energy levels a real boost. I highly recommend a fresh wholefoods diet! A real human diet!

  • Good data thanks Doctor! I’m almost complete carnivore-5 months, eat no fiber regular BMs. Dumping oxalates like crazy! I had all 5(?) symptoms of metabolic syndrome- even after following, over two years of no added sugar, no grains. Fruits and veggies and low fat proteins- always hungry- never missed a meal! Now, not hungry, not feeling cold, then I clued into – was I getting enough protein…..that started the spelunking!🙏

  • Yes metabolic dysregulation is huge. However it’s food addiction to starch, sugar and processed foods that must be overcome and mastered. We have a sick relationship with food, along with misinformation addiction and dysfunctional family systems. You cannot fix the damage of dysfunctional family systems and emotional trauma with healthy eating. You must deal with the core emotional issues as well. Come on doc, mitochondrial function has its role but these emotional issues have to be dealt with.

  • Well said. I am totally done with soda and diet soda!!! And I am on a quest to rid my grandchildren of it also. Ofcourse we all will reduce sugar intake, we will be a work in progress, day by day we will work at it, if we fall off, we will get back up and jump on the health wagon. A healthy life, is a life not wasted!!! 💞💞🙃💞💞

  • not clear why replacing donuts with bagels would work at all, since carbs, particularly chain-like as in bread, breaks down quickly to sugar, so why would that not lead to the same consequences? Impressive talk on the whole, esp. as to the importance of fiber. I like to use Monk Fruit, a natural sweetener that is low on glycemic index. Now, I worry that the sweetness increases insulin. When I take it though, my bs never goes low, even if taken just with barley tea and no carbs.

  • I have watched the father of a friend for 15 years. He eats a crap diet of sweets, has a gigantic beer belly and never exercises. His doctor NEVER talked to him about metabolic dysfunction. His wife had her lower intestines removed due to IBS. 2 years later the doctors removed his lower intestines. Really????? He has been in a wheelchair for 2 years. Today he is in the hospital to begin amputation of his left toe. They want to take his leg. The doctors have him on antibiotics and a suger bag. They brought him crap ultra processed fake foods to eat. I have seen this soooooo many times. If the doctor shows while I visit him in the hospital I will lose it on him. I have read Dr Lustigs work. He is 💯 percent correct. In fact I’m a bit worried about Dr. Lustigs health. He knows he’s not taking care of himself and we need him to carry on!

  • The question becomes: CV disease, ESRD, cancers, etc… all have a spectrum that typically and accurately places the patient on. Do we, or should we, have a spectrum for MHS? A simple questionnaire online, and appropriate labs, that any clinician can administer, that shows both where on the spectrum the patient is, and more importantly, where that will lead them in the future (creating a “bottom”, that makes the patient far more likely to commit to change). Easily done digitally, and even better, use AI to get right to it. Once formalized, we now begin to create a national standardized data set. Easier said than done, I know. I think maybe “standardized” is gonna’ be the real challenge in the clinical community. Doesn’t hurt to dream.

  • We don’t really eat much sugar at home, in terms of hidden sugar, in tea or coffee or also deserts, just on the odd occasion. A few weeks ago my friend came round and we munched through a pack a cookies, which were quite the opposite to wafer-thin. After about 45mins of eating them, my blood pressure went sky high, concentration went down the toilet and I felt like absolute crap. The effects were probably more noticeable due to having minimal sugar in our diets. This evidence Dr Lustig is presenting here is real, there should be no controversy!

  • As a long distance marathon runner (14 marathons) I’d be very interested to know Dr Rob Lustig’s thoughts on fructose being added to products like ‘Endura’ to keep you hydrated when really, for a 10mile run, all I ever really needed was salt for help with perspiration – running in Australia. When I found out (years ago now) these products contained fructose I stopped using them but never stopped running. The ‘buzz’ I thought I was getting from endorphins on long distant runs was really just insulin as I consumed more and more ‘gel’ substances to run my 35km.

  • I don’t get it either. The answer is so clear yet so many ppl still not following the right path when it’s already laid out right in front of you. I didn’t know abt how bad most of the food we consume until i got diagnosed w cancer, after it got removed, i changed my diet n exercise routine completely. It all made sense. What do we need to do to send the wake up call to ppl so they change their eating habit? I keep lecturing my family and friend and colleagues abt eating healthy and exercising but i don’t think anyone follows my advice 😔 im not a motivational speaker i guess but it is a pity.

  • In the bible it was the consumption of fruit that made Adam and Eve mortal. I’m not religious at all but to my 76 year old deeply religious mom who just can’t live without a bowl of rice or noodle, the one thing that seemed to make her to seriously cut sugar and carb was mentioning that genesis got something right in the fructose metabolism and its harmful effects on health and longevity.

  • But his giant gut…. It’s not just sugar and processed foods & beverages, it’s even organic whole foods home cooked starches & fruit that causes big guts in men. Grain, potatoes, corn, rice, beans, fruit. He should look into the KETO diet or Carnivore to fix his obesity problem. I lost 60 lbs in an imperfect KETO year after I switched to KETO to avoid having to go on insulin injections etc from the fake low fat dietary guidelines that made me so sick & pain all over. I couldn’t even lift my hands above my head from extreme fatigue and maybe heart problems. Carbohydrates of any kind…I have to keep the total very low to feel good. In 2019 I first found the BEAT DIABETES YouTube website & Dr Sten Ekberg.

  • Kids were fed fast food processed food and sugary drink since they could chew. No wonder they get a plethora of chronic illness later not to mention overweight. I grew up eating home cooked 3 meals, no fast food in my country and my mom could only afford produce from traditional market not supermarket. I never developed a craving for processed food and fast food.

  • Agree with it all except all mental health. Some mental health (specifically early onset schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) plus PTSD from traumatic events have little to do with metabolic function. Healthy, fit people with no internal fat have serious accidents, get raped or go to war, and develop MH issues as a result.

  • Great article. The only thing he left out about the function or disfunction of the liver is that 90 to 95% of the population has EBV which would compromise the function of the liver. Until you turn on the immune system and control the EBV, diabetes 2 and autoimmune disease will continue. I’m not saying sugar is not the problem, but the latent virus that is asymptomatic will further interrupt the normal process of the liver. This causes mystery weight gain. An active EBV turns of the immune off, can cause celiac, arthritis, MS, lupus etc.

  • The Gardner study (JAMA. 2018;319:667-679. doi:10.1001/jama.2018.0245) cited at min 51:12 is based on “the effect of a healthy low-fat (HLF) diet vs a healthy low-carbohydrate (HLC) diet” not on either high fat or high carbohydrate diet on weight loss. The diet in the study. The diet in the study specified “The fourth strategy is to promote high nutrient density (Quality). Other Quality concepts included “real food,” “minimally processed,” “seasonal,” “organic,” “grass-fed,” “whole grain,” and “pasture-raised,” depending on diet assignment.”

  • Had noticed how some of the larger elderlies are outliving those who had been thin, and were plagued all their lives by phobia around fat (on the outside) and/or were unable to gain weight. Considering that in case of a famine, those who were adapted to put on bodyfat would probably outlive those who were carrying none… In a way then ‘survival of the fattest’ 😅

  • I hate to be this person in the comment section, but since I’m an English teacher and a proofreader I’m going to go ahead: The word “belie” means to show something to be a lie. The subcellular pathologies are not showing chronic disease to be a lie, they are CAUSING the chronic disease. I think the word that was wanted here is “underlie.” Okay, nitpicking aside, this is a fascinating and valuable talk.

  • Even children today have signs of artery disease. Fast foods and sugary drinks have long term consequences. There is an obesity epidemic today where over 60% of the population is overweight or obese. What is common today and “NORMAL” is not healthy. The average person today is not healthy and is taking medications. Heart attacks were once only common in people over 65. Today people in their 40 are having heart attacks. Add more plants and vegetables to your diet and less junk and overly processed foods. Being thin is a sign of good health. Being over weight or obese is a sign of bad health.

  • The antioxidants are packed in cells. Cells are packed full of them In the cytosol. SOD and glutathione respectively. They are not made on peroxisomes as stated . Which is the ultimate disposal place Apart from this there’s much to be gained by contemplating what the advent of concentrated foods have done since the Industrial Revolution, and excess use of animal food whose health we know nothing about. Sugar is a special case in point because of its easy cheap availability and extreme appeal. We shouldn’t think however that fructose present in fruits is a bad thing. It actually stimulate liver and pancreatic enzymes that help metabolism and they are filled with many regulator compounds. Fruits also do not engage a robust insulin response like sugar does The familiarity with food in packages, made up and invented food, canned food and food concocted in factories has derailed human health beyond what one can mention. Looking back to the 1800s we can see that part of the issues relate to the Dyad food and physical activity which is completely changed due to the comforts of modern life. These discourage people from being physically active at most levels. And the cataclysmic explosion of endless “syndromes” can only be dealt with by pain, unlearning, relearning, Education, and a lot of sacrificing our perverted appetites and embracing sobering self control. Food will kill you with relish!!

  • I am not compelled to agree with the statements that blenders destroy fiber to the extent they no longer supress sugar absorbtion in the gut or provide the normally expected benefits of eating fiber. . What is the difference between chewing food and putting it in a blender? I make a lot of smoothies and unlike juicer machines, the blender leaves in all the fruit texture … sometimes referred to a roughage. He says in the presentation that the fiber dissappears. Is he claiming that the ground up “roughage” is now fully digested as a suger ? I am not saying he is wrong, just that he needs to present more facts more clearly before he convinces me to stop making vegetable smoothies with hi fiber. ie broccoli, kale, carrots, oranges, lemmons, prunes etc. The fact that he would sling such assertions casually causes him to lose some credibility. Further he refers loosly to “starch” as being better than sugar without being specific when I have read that many “carbs” have as high a Gycomic Index as sugar. Simple or complex? exactly which foods is he referring to as “starches”: Lastly he mentions Eggs and Dairy as being non optimal food choices when I have been led to believe they provide good fats and proteins with little sugars if you are not lactose intollerent. Yes I think he is in the big picture correct but these oversights alert me to be cautious as everyone presenting on youtube is presented as an expert. How can you know who to trust ?

  • Processed food causes obesity and higher mortality/ death At 51: 41 – ” processed food is high in sugar, low in fiber” The sugar and fructose causes metabolic damage, and lack of fiber causes inflammatory damage. ” Food with fiber is real food” . Fiber protects you from the bad effects/damage caused by sugars / fructose. Ex. Fatty liver caused by sugar and fructose. At 53: 55 – 8 disease- damages, their causes, which cannot be cured by any medicines that work. At 57: 30- Why diet sweeteners bad? ” Half as bad “, it does not mean good. . Why bad: 1. they changes the microbiome ( the bacteria in your GIT ), lead to inflammation and insulin resistance by itself. 2. Sweet on the tongue, causes insulin release. Insulin drives cell proliferation. So sugar, fructose, processed foods without fiber – are the cause of all chronic diseases. What to do ? No sugar, no fructose, unprocessed food with fiber, omega 3,

  • If I hadn’t see a hundred articles on this and related subjects I couldn’t have followed this article. It’s really for the educated alone. The charts weren’t clear for the less educated, no pointing to show what is being talked about doing while comparisons . I feel most people. Would not make it through 10 minutes. That being said, good information, succinct, head of the nail, all yes. However, who is this lecture targeted to.. those folks in the health care industries who balk the system have their jobs (livelihood), threatened. Solution,,,,,, confront big pharma and the food industry ( ie big money)! How does this occur?

  • Approx 46:00 – If fiber is the food for the gut bacteria, and they will consume the mucin layer if there is no fiber, resulting in hepatic insulin resistance/inflammation etc. So how does this explain the claimed perfect health of people that have been carnivore for years/decades? Apparently many long-term health issues are resolved on a carnivore (no fiber) diet. How about the Inuit (also non-fiber eaters)?

  • Health care costs are out of control. Going WFPB vegan can save money, pain and suffering from disease. Lower your chance of high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer by going vegan. Hospitals, doctors offices and schools should be places where good nutrition is taught and provided not places that contribute to disease and obesity. It is crazy the hospitals are feeding people the very food that caused the heart disease, high blood pressure or cancer that they are treating. Every person in the hospital should receive some nutrition education before being released. Every doctor visit should be an opportunity to educate patients about how food choices impacts their health outcomes. The fact that doctors do not get nutrition training as part of their training makes no sense. Medicare and Medicaid should require nutrition education as part of patient care. Focus should be on food choices.

  • Don’t quite agree I hear this abd I want to cry am stillwaiting for tooth bud trial start after poisoning crown metal poisoning 12 years ago,no patents, wanting to be a glory boy umpteen other justifications I’ve reached the point I don’t even enjoy gardening anymore then cycling accidents 2019 2020 and ther isnothingi can do gut dystopia or gut liver issues stenosis last March and onand on,the arrogance of science. All the wrong food stuff of course I rely on because I’m sick of mushed food, please God can he hurry up,of course only few front teeth left, you could send me a copy of your book all these cycles are out because if gut biota problems ie sugar and fast foods reduce the strains in favour of pathological strains that is what drives it sorry, metabolic problems are then kept in thier dist cycles because bigger organs circadian drivers due to the power they revert

  • He is a sincere and hard working scientist and speaker. However, he has consistently come to the wrong conclusions about carbohydrates – usually admonishing them while implicating the narrower; “processed food and sugar”. ALL forms of carbohydrate are only abundant now because of technological change. The evolutionary environment had 50x fewer carbs and it was much more costly to eat. Sadly even Lustig appears to be obese. Lower carbs full stop and every aspect of your health improves.

  • 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️ 🥸 awesome . I got a ? the guy presenting .. what kind of fat does he have ? . Liver . Pancreas etc 🤔 I like to know if has tested himself .,he presents this info, knows all the facts is complaining?, about how the approach to these problems is wrong yet 😳🤷‍♂️, he doesn’t live by the information and ” cure ” he presents . No he doesn’t have to present as athlete, bodybuilder, yes his age ., but he could be healthier and present as healthy example, result of his knowledge.. hey presenter don’t shout, unless you follow your own advice ..
