My sister got the Chevy Blazer EV RS a couple months ago. And yes all your technical criticisms are on point. Adding to that the vehicle has no frunk! The software is basically patching together off the shelf products like Google maps. It is kludgy but serviceable. By any technical metric my Model Y is far superior. However the Blazer is a decent car overall. It is a good introduction to EVs for the average consumer. It has familiar controls etc. That is not nothing. It has a wider wheel base than the Tesla so it handles bumps better. The acceleration is good but no match for a Tesla of course. Our 80 year old father like my sisters EV 0:02 Blazer so much he bought one for himself! He liked the one pedal driving it is easier on his knees. He said it probably will extend his ability to drive for a few more years at least. So yes Tesla and the Chinese have better cars but the Blazer is decent. And it is just a matter of time until Chinese EVs hit the North American market.
I had a 2020 Bolt, which is a great car for going around town. I traded it for an Equinox EV. It has it’s faults – mainly the slow charging speed. But, it’s a perfectly adequate car even for long trips. I got mine with Super Cruise and it is really nice. I can drive hands free on many of the highways in my area. It is front wheel drive and I think this has an advantage over rear wheel drive when it comes to winter traction. More than two-thirds of the U.S. is capable of getting snow and ice. I didn’t go with AWD because of the 10% hit on the range. We don’t get heavy snow so often that I can’t sit out one or two days while they clear the roads. Anyway, I like GM’s cars and, yes, the government will help them stay in business because of GM’s hundreds of thousands of jobs.
As a Chevrolet bolt owner, I can understand and agree with electric viking on this topic. I give Chevrolet my wholehearted thank you for giving me my first electric vehicle, but they have a long way to go over getting affordable EVS to the market right now. I’m starting to see a shift in the market and I think in say 10 years for me I will consider looking for a different type of model from a different company, because of the issues when it comes to Chevy making affordable electric vehicles again. They were the only ones at the time to put high range and great cost out in North America with a Chevrolet bolt. For the life of me I can’t understand why most people didn’t jump onto it for the affordability at the time. They need to get back into the affordable EV Market again. There needs to be another arms race to electric vehicles affordability in North America again.
I’m an Ozzie, so I expect to be able to pick from a large varying amount of EV,s next year when I upgrade to EV from exhaust fumes and petrol sniffing. I’ll be honest, it is too expensive, but the way the Chevy Blazer EV looks outside and inside, IS in my opinion, what most customers would be looking for. It doesn’t try and look like an iPad, or a mobile phone, or a space ship or a new laptop. It is trying to look like a classy car. I prefer that look. If the Tesla made their car look like a car that runs on petrol, and had an interior with more on the dash than an iPad screen, I would buy one in a heartbeat, because it has range, fast charging and experience in the EV field is there. The EV,s will get there, it’s teething problems.
There were two EV battery fires this week. One at the port of Montreal on Tuesday and one in the port of LA. Under US code, EV Lithium Ion Batteries are considered a hazardous material and they can cause all sorts of health issues. So why should ANY hazardous materials be used in vehicles? We don’t use Cesium 137 or uranium to power our cars, who had the genius idea of using these types of chemicals?
