The term “pure-blood” refers to a family or individual without Muggle (non-magic) blood, often associated with Salazar Slytherin, one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft. This concept was used to describe wizarding families descended only from magic, without Muggles, Squibs, or Muggle-born witches or wizards in their family.
Harry Potter, who had a witch and a wizard as parents, was considered a Half-Blood by Voldemort and the Death Eaters due to his father being part of Voldemort’s gang of thugs at Hogwarts in the mid-40s. The only members of this family mentioned are the father, who was part of Voldemort’s gang of thugs at Hogwarts, and his son, who was half-blood.
Hogwarts would recognize children with a mix of pure blood and half-blood parents as equals with access to the schooling. 11-year-old Muggleborn students were given a letter by a teacher explaining Hogwarts and magic. The rule is that pure bloods need to have two parents and four grandparents who are wizards. Anything less means they are half or muggle-born.
In Rowling’s imagined wizarding world, Harry James Potter holds half-blood status because his mother is Muggle-born and his father is pure-blood. This concept highlights the importance of pure-blood lineage in the wizarding world, as it allows for equal access to education and support for those who are not pure-blood.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. When Muggleborn students are sent off to Hogwarts school, how do you think their parents …
How can two Muggles have a wizard child?
The concept of blood-status in wizarding society is not based on genes, but rather on the person’s birth order. Muggleborn refers to a person having non-magical parents, pure-blood to those with magical parents and grandparents, and half-blood to those with magical parents and grandparents. This construct is a construct of wizarding society, and a magical child of two muggle-born individuals would be half-blood. The term “Muggleborn” is used to emphasize the concept of born.
Does Draco Malfoy like half-bloods?
Draco Malfoy, a British pure-blood wizard, was raised to believe in blood purity and looked down on half-bloods and Muggle-borns. Born on June 5, 1980, to Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy, Draco attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1991-1998. He was sorted into Slytherin House and became friends with fellow Slytherins Vincent Crabbe, Gregory Goyle, and Pansy Parkinson. However, he quickly developed a rivalry with Harry Potter. Draco’s beliefs in blood purity and his strong belief in the importance of blood purity led him to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Is Ginny a pureblood?
Ginny Potter, born Ginny Weasley, was a pure-blood witch and the youngest of Arthur and Molly Weasley’s seven children. She attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1992-1999 and was sorted into Gryffindor House. During her first year, she developed a crush on Harry Potter and was influenced by Tom Riddle’s sixteen-year-old self, which led her to re-open the Chamber of Secrets, endangering many students, including herself.
During the 1995-1996 School Year, Leland Evans and his sister Abby took Ginny’s books, leading to a fight in the room where Leland was stationed four years ago. Ginny and Abby pulled each other’s hair, and Leland cast a spell to hit Ginny. In retaliation, Ginny cast a spell at Leland, and in retaliation, Abby and Leland began a duel. Ginny shot a Stinging Hex at Leland, and Abby cast the first spell Draco Malfoy against Harry Potter during the Duel. Leland and Abby locked Ginny in the room and went back to the Slytherin common room.
Is Lily Potter a half-blood?
Lily Luna Potter, born around 2008, is an English half-blood witch and the youngest daughter of Harry and Ginevra Potter. She has two older brothers, James Sirius and Albus Severus Potter. Lily was named after her late paternal grandmother, Lily Potter, and her middle name comes from her parents’ friend Luna Lovegood. She began her education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 2019 and was sorted into Gryffindor House. Her parents are Harry and Ginny Potter, and her mother is a former Quidditch player and later correspondent, while her father is an Auror and Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
What if a pureblood marries a Muggle?
The equation “pure blood + half-blood = half-blood” is equivalent to “pure blood + muggle-born = half-blood.”
Did Hermione’s parents ever remember her again?
In the aftermath of the Second Wizarding War, J. K. Rowling corroborated the account that Hermione had traveled to Australia with the objective of restoring and rectifying her parents’ memories. This endeavor was ultimately successful, resulting in the retrieval of their memories and their subsequent return to their professional lives as dentists.
How did Hermione’s parents find out about Hogwarts?
In 1991, Mrs. and Mr. Granger received a letter inviting their daughter, Hermione, to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Despite her shock and excitement, they purchased her school supplies, including her wand, from Ollivanders in Diagon Alley. After Hermione took the Hogwarts Express to her new school, they were surprised by her new identity but proud of her ability to memorize all her books. For the 1992-1993 school year, they had to buy more school equipment, using Gringotts Wizarding Bank to exchange Muggle money with wizarding currency.
How do Muggle borns find out about Hogwarts?
Muggle-born witches and wizards in the British wizarding community were often subjected to prejudice and discrimination, similar to racism. When they reached eleven, their Hogwarts acceptance letters were delivered in person by staff members, reassuring parents about the hidden magical society and helping them prepare for their desired school and purchase supplies. The term “Mudblood” was used to describe them as dirty and impure, implying they were unworthy of magic.
Pure-bloods believed that Muggle-borns were unworthy of magic and should not be allowed into the wizarding world. During this period, a news article from the Daily Prophet stated that Muggle-borns could only obtain magic through force or theft.
What happens if two half-bloods have a kid in Harry Potter?
The blood status of a witch or wizard is contingent upon the magical status of their grandparents. In the event that all four grandparents are identified as magical, the child is classified as pureblood. In the event that one or more grandparents are not magical, the child of two half-bloods is classified as half-blood. A child is only classified as pure-blood when they are born to two pure-blood parents.
How is Hermione a witch if her parents are Muggles?
Muggle-borns inherit magical abilities from distant ancestors, descended from Squibs who have married Muggles and lost knowledge of their wizarding legacy. This magic resurfaces unexpectedly many generations later. Muggle-born siblings can sometimes be wizards or witches, as seen in Colin and Dennis Creevey, but not always, as seen in Lily Evans’ sister Petunia. When Muggle-born witches and wizards reach eleven in the British wizarding community, their Hogwarts acceptance letters are delivered in person by staff, reassuring parents and explaining the hidden magical society. Staff also assist families in preparing for their desired wizarding school and purchasing school supplies.
Why did Hermione obliviate her parents but Harry didn t?
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I, Hermione Granger uses powerful magic to protect her parents from Voldemort and his wrath. She erases herself from their minds, ensuring they are safe from Voldemort’s attacks and promises to find them and reverse the magic when done. Hermione’s decision to erase herself from their minds was not only to protect them from He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named but also to safeguard the entire wizarding world.
Casting Obliviate not only ensured Voldemort couldn’t torture her location but also prevented them from exposing the magic world to muggles by searching for her. Hermione’s parents likely would have looked for her if she went missing, which could have gotten them into trouble. Hermione’s love for her parents and her decision to erase her memory served to safeguard the entire wizarding world and prevent Voldemort from exposing the magic world to muggles.

I love how kingsley shacklebolt being the secretary of the british prime minister does his job so smoothly and perfectly, when Fudge mentionned needing a bodyguard, then kingsley’s name without context, the prime minister refused saying he could’t find a better secretary than kingsley if he tried, then the surprise of then being told that kingsley is an auror who’s there to protect him and being his secretary is just a part time job. lol
There’ll be a sub department in the ministry of magic that basically enters the muggle government in various roles that ensures that the magical community remains under the radar, which would include ensuring any muggleborns attending hogwarts don’t show up in any muggle database as not attending a muggle school
I toyed with the question a while back. I’m inclined to think that there are just enough muggle parents who’s children go to Hogwarts that they are able to make the children slip through the cracks of the education system. They can put in that children are getting home schooling or going to a private school where a dummy LLC is set up to handle the occasional inquiry. And when it comes to Hermione, she was probably doing a home school coarse on top of her Hogwarts assignments.
Thank you for mentioning me as the one who requested this article, it’s something I’ve been thinking about and wanted a discussion about as it seemed a logical thing that the muggles (of which unfortunately I am one!) would have had something to say regarding the alternative world that because of their children they had become aware of! Great article and keep up the good work.
This is literally something I’ve always wondered ever since first encountering the saga at 14. If Hogwarts registrar does “know” there is a Muggleborn witch or wizard “since the day they are born” as Dumbledore states, why doesn’t anyone (a Hogwarts representative or a Muggle Liaison ministry worker) inform and support parents earlier than upon admission letter time? I mean, imagine having a kid who seems to make unexplainable things happen when under pressure and/or strong emotion. Someone would worry and have them seen by some doctor, some would be scared, some would try to read it under a religious/spiritual point of view and act accordingly, some could blame it on the child. By the time the child reaches 11, they might have gone through some form of abuse due to their magical abilities. Was Vernon the first and only parent or guardian who would just refuse their kid to attend Hogwarts? And most prominently: how comes every single parent or guardian keeps loyal to the status of secrecy? If someone came to my house when I was 11 telling my parents that I was magical and therefore they would take me away to a magical boarding school my parents couldn’t follow me to nor even know the location to, well, they would have called the police right away, thinking of a kidnap attempt, and never ever let me go anywhere. Some other parent might not understand how serious the status of secrecy is, and just brag around about their magical kid (imagine enforcing the status of secrecy now, in IG and TikTok era!
I always figured that there was some kind of paperwork that would be filled out stating that the child was in a boarding school and Hogwarts would have said paperwork to show that it is legitimate since the main players for the government would be aware of magic existing and knows that it has to be kept on the down low.
Millicent? She’s at St. Rita’s—the sisters there are good at encouraging clever girls. Goeffery? He’s at Godric Hall; he’s such an active boy and they have such good athletic facilities. Derwint is at Dr. Salazar’s; so many influential families send their kids there, so he’ll make good connections. Jimmy’s at St. Helga’s—they give such a good, well-rounded education.
So we know what magical courses are taught but what about basic classes math reading writing & since they study potions I would also imagine muggle sciences would be needed to prevent the students from accidentally whipping up a Muggle explosive or toxin. They would have to have a basic understanding of Muggle chemistry. Also Muggle history would be essential I would think to allow them to blend in more effectively when out in the Muggle world.
This is just a part of the bigger question of how the wizarding community, as a whole, deals with living in a world that is still predominately muggle. Everyone shows up at Hogwarts already knowing how to read, write, basic arithmetic, etc. It’s never said in the books, but it’s certainly implied that you have to have an elementary/grade school diploma before you can enroll at Hogwarts. I vaguely remember someone asking JKR about that like 20 years ago, and she said that wizard children either attend muggle school or are home-schooled. The Weasleys were all home-taught by Molly. Wizard families still live in the muggle world. Diagon Alley is IN London. Hidden, but it’s still a street in a muggle city. They still have to abide by muggle laws, so I think it likely there is some system in place for wizards to prove to the muggle government that their children were being educated. I would think that that would be a major department of the Ministry of Magic, finding ways to enforce muggle laws while still preserving the International Statute of Secrecy, or, at the very least, providing cover for them. Or maybe there are little magic departments within muggle governmental entities that handle those specific entities’ issues as they pertain to the magic population. I mean, what about land/property owned by wizards? Are they ALL unplottable, or do some people own land/property that is registered with the muggle government? As for educational subjects, I do think it is a bit unfortunate that they aren’t educated in the regular subjects beyond elementary school.
Although the books don’t mention anything about this subject, it seems obvious that there would have to be a pretty large number of employees in the Ministry of Magic whose job is to maintain the veil of secrecy, and the Muggle governments would have to have similar agencies with employees whose job is also to maintain the secret. Some of these employees would be tasked with exactly this job: to create and maintain legitimate sounding cover stories for muggle-borns going to Hogwarts. We also know that Wizard homes are not all concealed from Muggle eyes like Grimmauld Place (the Black home that Sirius made available to the Order of the Phoenix). The Weasley’s house, and Luna Lovegood’s house, appear to be ordinary houses that exist in the “real” world (of Harry Potter’s England), and that Muggles driving or walking by on the road could see, but that a Warding spell is there to subconsciously deter random Muggles from becoming curious and actually coming to the house and knocking on the door. Hogwarts itself is a complex of real buildings, but is concealed from Muggle eyes with an enchantment that makes it look like ancient ruins, as I recall. Another question I’ve always had, is the Wizarding world’s money – what is it based on? Economic details in works of fiction are rarely mentioned; for example, in The Lord of the Rings, how would one come by money to pay Barliman Butterbur for a room and food at The Prancing Pony? Some Hobbit families, the Tooks, Bagginses, and Brandybucks for example, are far more affluent than average, but much of the economy seems to be based on barter of agricultural products.
Always seemed odd to me. What if the muggle born students actually preferred the muggle world? They’d be a decade behind their peers in our subject matter by the time they even left hogwarts. It’s canonically referenced that the Malfoy’s did high level business with muggles. What if a wizard wanted to ascend a muggle corporate structure instead of duel dark wizards and play with dragons?
I think HP showed in the books that the magic and muggle governments interact at some level and just saying “magic” answers the how. I think even if a muggle born wizard or their parent did not want to go to magic school that the magic government of whatever the country would force the issue in some manner, if only to prevent the possible eruption of obscuris.
In a world of magic where the Ministry regularly does memory modifications, unplotability, and various other concealment charms, why this is even a question. They manage to hide Dragons, Giants, hippogriffs, etc…… All the time! How hard is it to jinx a name so that when some reads a record….. Well Dumbledore did hand over Paper that seem perfectly in order.
If someone staying with a Muggle guardian – such as Riddle at the orphanage – gets a visit… why wouldn’t Harry have gotten a visit instead of repeated letters? He was staying with Muggle guardians, after all. Seems Hagrid could have just been sent to Privet Drive in the first place. So… maybe only people in orphanages get a visit?
I am still wondering what are the immediate reactions of muggleborns and their parents to the information that their kids are magical, there has to be a lot of denial and convincing. Based on Hermione’s and other muggleborns’ reactions, it seems to me like it wasn’t that much of a big deal for them. There have to be some parents that want to see the so-called school of “witchcraft and magic” with their own eyes before sending their kids there. What happens then?
Your reasoning is very good. It does not explain however when and where muggle parents say farewell to their magic children. Can they access platform 9 3/4? Or do they have to stay on a normal platform while their children make their way through the wall? How could Hermione’s parents enter Diagon Alley? They cannot go there by flew powder. Even if they could go through The Leaky Cauldron, could they make the brick wall open up as Hagrid did?
“There’s no government mandate stipulating that you must legally tell your friends and family what you’ve done with your child.” Except there possibly could be, at least in some states here in the United States. While Grandparent rights are difficult to establish in the courts, it is at least recognizable enough that a legal battle could occur and the courts would demand an accounting of the child’s location and status during the proceedings; especially if an allegation about gaps in education (including what Muggles should typically known) were made.
I left the state school system when I was 9 and leaving primary school. A council truant officer turned up 2 weeks in to the term as the state middle school I was meant to move to had not realised this despite being told by my parents. I came to the door in my new school’s uniform and that was enough for the truant officer. Private schools are inspected by OFSTED, so there would need to be several insiders in OFSTED.
I figured since the prime minister knows about the wizarding world, there would be a system in place for muggle born wizards or witch’s. They would be given a secret word or something to use for paperwork and then it would automatically check any qualifications for them. And then the muggle system would look over it as if it’s fine.
I think usually muggle borns at some point in their early years of life will be aware there is something weird/ special about them, i.e. spontanous “outbreak” of some sort of magic, and therefore, when they get their “letter” it would eventually be a sort of revelation and explanation of why certain things continue happening to them
I always assumed: they told the government they were being home schooled or taught abroad. To friends/family just say they spare being sent to boarding school abroad. That’s what I would do if it was my family. My brothers both went to boarding school so we just said they were at boarding school to anyone who asked about where they were or what their education was.
I have a bit of an issue calling the head of the magic the minister of magic. The pm doesn’t appoint him so he’d be more akin to a commissioner or independent agency director. Could always call him the governor of magic (akin to the independent agency of the bank of England). Further, the minister of magic doesn’t sit in cabinet meetings which would make it harder to consider him a minister.
I find it kinda funny that a sub division of the ministry of magic employs the Polyjuice Potion to temporarily replace muggleborn children. Witches and wizards volunteer their children or even themselves as a cover story. If a muggle catches them drinking the potion they can easily tell them it’s medicine for an illness they have.
Perhaps a bigger question is how does Hogwarts even know a muggle born exists to send them their school acceptance letter in the first place .. do they have the equivalent of the X men’s’ Cerebro? if so why can’t they use it to locate wizards like Sirius Black or Voldemort when they need to .. if it’s just random luck and following reports of strange events in the muggle world then how many slip through the cracks? .. a related question is how does te under age magic detection thing work, is that an alarm spell cast on the child and lifted after graduation (so you have to know they exists to go and do that) or something else.
The PM may be in the Loop, but the Monarch will have to be. In certain Fanfiction, the Queen or their representative could and would dismiss the Ministry under the reserve powers of the crown. They would have the authority by treaty to expose the Magical world for Gross violations of Treaty. In my Fan fiction Her Majesty Fired thru her GG Fudge, and Umbridge after the attack on the Ministry.
They already covered this in the books, the muggle government and the magical government have ties to each other, while the magical community is still mostly a secret they have certain people in high positions of power that onow a lottle about the magical world and help them hide and deal with things such as this
Considering I´m an introvert and I hardly leave my apartment unless I have to, even if I was a wizard and I had to go to Hogwarts, no one would question where I´m at, my neighbors would probably think I´m at home and they simply didn´t see me leave. My best friend would be the only one I would tell where I´m at because I know he would make a great secret keeper. He would probably tell everyone I went to study abroad (which I already have before)
In my study of the school system I discovered that mandatory state sanction school wasn’t imposed in general until around 1900 and so it would not have mattered what people told their friends and family before that point in time after that point in time something would’ve had to change because the government started keeping track of everything at that point and in the timeframe that Harry Potter would’ve went to school there would’ve been governmental agencies that would’ve known that he would’ve existed so the question then becomes what kind of magic would have been used to wipe his name off the records and keep him out of the governmental system for the time that he was not in the city. It is a difficult question to answer but I think that when the new laws went into affect somebody in the whistling world would’ve had to institute a contingency for any young person going to that school and so I think that whatever they did would’ve solve the problem quite nicely so students could attend Hogwarts however based on my study of the school system standard school was not imposed until around 1900 and that is worldwide so before that time again you would not have had to report where your children were.
About Hogwarts, the easiest explanation is the “private boarding school” one. And not only for muggleborns, but also for most kids born to magical families. Muggles around will start asking why the infant is not going to a regular school or why they disappear for the whole year. A boarding school is a perfect answer for all those questions. But for what the direct family of a muggleborn says to their friends and family (and everyone else) about the kids and what’s happening, they must have something else. For example, the parents and siblings of the magical kid might be under some kind of spell that works like “Cassandra’s curse”: If they speak about magic to anyone (they tell the truth), they’re immediately dismissed as funny, delusional, stupid or crazy (no one believes them).
Seems to me that all witches an wizards have to be descendants of muggle borns, just so far back in history its been forgotten. Or the other way around, all muggles being descendants if squibs. How else do you end up with them both being human. So its either a genetic mutation that appears randomly in the muggle population, or a suppressed ancestral trait that sometimes reappears.
hopefully there is support for the parents afterwards because some must feel that they have lost their child.. perhaps other muggle parents nearby and half blood families they can talk to when under stress .. imagine the Creevey’s horror after Colin died and if there was no one to talk it over with… it would be like sending your child to another planet, him dying, but your next child has to go the next year, perhaps your only child now, it would be horrible …. and really they have to let the child attend or risk an obscuros, something that they could understand as much as ‘ eternal expansion theory’ or ‘worm holes’ and ‘space time’.. it is a muggle situation than needs expert and wise knowledge and kindness ..
The prime minister knows about the magical world. I always assumed that Hogwarts was registered as some sort of private school (most likely under a different name) and that is what is told to the government and family members. The wizard government has a department for muggle relations if I remember correctly. They probably deal with such things as well. Now that I’m an adult I’ve also started to wonder wether wizards pay any taxes in the muggle world. Like property tax. Is Grimauld Place connected to the sewer system? There must be some kind of fee for that. The Malfoys own a large estate in Wiltshire, does this show up on any muggle maps? What do muggles see when they go there? Do wizards own a British passport?
Easiest would be having Hogwarts recognized as a private boarding school, file some documents in goverment educational ministries and have a wizzard use magic to confuse and alter memories, so they’re not deeply investigated and have insepctions simply signed off. Parents would be told how dangerous disclosing the magical world would be for peace and even charmed with confusion if they have an uncorrooperative personality. Friends and familiy could just be told the kid had an invitation to a prestigous private school with invitation only and/or tution has been waved and they couldn’t miss this opportunity. Several wizzards in muggle ministries would be wise, in case magical stuff intersects with the mundane world unnoticed by the ministry of magic. Also, a few little bribes could also go very long way to prevent dificulties, after all, alchemy can make gold or healing magic applied to a few people close to muggle contacts in goverment institutions would also help and not cost a lot.
Here in the US, getting out of explaining kids absence is sadly easy, mostly just lie and people aren’t often concern about what’s going on with their friends kids. More than likely though, if a child is excepted into a wizarding school and starts attending, if they are a child that was in the public schooling system before, then the parents are likely given registration forms to fill out, so that those who handle the legal side of things with muggles can get the forms filed and the child on record as now attending the select school, I don’t think it’s anything difficult, the wizard school is likely already registered with the country/ state/ province as a boarding school, leaving little worry other than just filling a form to appease the muggles in government not in the know.
In real life lore, Merlin and the other magick masters of the time of King Arthur would have been the last group allowed to use magick before the Catholic Chruch and other chruchs grew more powerful after the death of the Once & Future King. It might be different for other magick masters in other countries who might have lasted a tad longer or so.
The lack of interaction with the muggle world always felt like a missed opportunity. We barely see how Harry and Hermione deal with their double lives each summer. We never get any good muggle characters until Jacob in the sequal series. Hermione’s family practically don’t exist. And the muggle world has nearly zero reaction to the magical war that is directly affecting them.
Going to give support to the idea that the (Nation) Ministry of Magic has a long standing relationship with the (Nation) Muggle Gov’t to cover most of these sorts of situations, but it hasn’t been important in any of the media to depict it just yet. For the Schooling, there’s probably a “Hogwarts” listed in the registry of whatever UK Education body is most appropriate, which hasn’t been listed as “Active” for … um… ever? … and has a charm attached to it that makes the majority of Muggles simply accept that the school is both “Inactive” and has “27 students”. The few Muggles who are able to overcome this kind of a Charm are likely Obliviated or have their memories altered in some other way to make them slide on past this logical problem, up to and including bringing the most stubborn Muggles into the secret. Or at least, that’s how I’d write it – have a few very peculiar Muggles be resistant to some Magical actions, and when it became clear that they would have be actually harmed (ie: mind messed with to the point of changing the personality of the Muggle), they would be brought in to work for Muggle-Wizard Liason Offices and the like. (Heck, maybe Colin Creevy’s dad would be one of those people – “Milkman” in the 1990’s? REALLY? There’s a story hook…)
It makes me wonder too… What does the initial ruler of the day think of all the witches and wizards up and down the country? After Queen Mary Tudor/Bloody Mary’s days they couldn’t necessarily go about persecuting witches and wizards in the open like they used to. And I doubt the rulers of the day would’ve been ignorant about Grindelwald, Voldemort etc. causing trouble too. Maybe they take the Elizabeth the 1st approach and just are like “So long as they don’t cause too much trouble, live and let live.” And with the trouble makers “The wizard authorities are handling Voldemort.” I would also imagine after a certain point, the rulers of the day would have Aurors as part of their security. It’s an interesting thought.
I think it would be HARDER to lie to family and friends about the wizarding world than the government. If they’re not close family and friends, that’s one thing. But to seamlessly lie to friends you frequently text and call? So many cracks would appear in your story after time. People would also wonder why you don’t know simple things other high school students know. And nowadays people can FaceTime you. Even in the 90’s I’m sure people would have wanted to visit their friends and families where they attended school.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Wizarding world had wizards and witches that live disguised among the muggles to handle such things. I mean it’s not only the school registration, is it? What about muggles taxes, insurances, etc. There is just a lot of areas where both worlds are technically divided but still overlap somewhat. So I would guess there are those wizards and witches pretending to be a muggle while handling things for the Wizarding world on the side.
I like these type of articles, but I think this one particularly there’s too many things that I don’t really see happening first of all they already have magical enchantments that keep people from accidentally stumbling upon Hogwarts since it is technically hidden, and that people would just see a worn out abandoned building along with other counter to keep them from going to it, but I also think if it was even a private school, there would be too much mystery around it where people would wonder about it and try to go there, etc. so I honestly think that it’s really just a direct by direct thing where The ministry of magic or some office goes and either enchants or some sort of spell to make them forget about that particular kid somehow I’m also assuming that children better, Muggle born, probably isn’t that large of a percentage and easily able to be managed. I’m guessing they probably just have really their existence erased from public records more than anything and if somebody does snoop around for some reason, they just get memory modifications I feel like that’s the most realistic possibility.
personally I think the easiest way is to forge that the kid is studying abroad. “Hermione Jane Granger has moved to France to live with her cousins (doesn’t exist) in Baguette High School (also doesn’t exist). She returns to UK during holidays”. So British muggle government thinks Hermione is receiving education in France, while French government didn’t hear a thing. I don’t think British government would go as far as double checking with French government about whether this person exists in their education system. If they do, just send a Ministry of Magic person as their fake French counterpart.
What would make the most sense is if Muggleborns are extremely, extremely rare. There is simply too much work involved in deceiving the Muggle world. Maybe Muggleborns have a Squib ancestor who made their way into the Muggle world and now the gene has manifested itself. If there were only two or three Muggleborns per generation, I think everything would be a lot simpler. However, the books imply that quite a few Hogwarts students are Muggleborns, so there’s that.
This has been one of the questions I have been asking about muggle borns but I also wonder how the muggle born students paid for their school supplies given that they had no access to wizzarding world currency from their parents. Cause the movies portray it as quite and expensive thing on the example of Weasley family. Like…is there some sort of exchange to fiat or does Hogwarts or Ministry of Magic fund it? The first option does not seem too likely to me because who would exchange their money the other way… But if the second option is correct, then I also wonder where does the money come from. Do wizzards pay similar taxes to the Ministry of finance that the muggles pay (income tax, VAT etc) from a part of which such fund for muggle born students is created? Cause the books have never suggested anything like that but it is the only thing that would make sense tbh. Also it is the only explanation that would make sense in respect to how Hogwarts is funded tbh, cause nothing suggests that it does run on tuition from which stuff like food and teachers could be paid.
Although education is compulsory in the US each state sets its own rules as to how it handles children who are home schooled. In many places the parent only has to notify their local school board with no follow up after that at all. This is very controversial at the moment because of several cases where abusive parents pulled their kids out of school claiming they were going to be home schooling them in order to keep officials from finding out about abuse, failed to provide anything much in the way of education, and then abused one of their children so badly that they died. There is a powerful home school lobbying organization that is working to not only keep the backlash from those incidents leading to tighter rules but to weaken rules in states where they are already tighter. Never thought that the American Ministry of Magic might be behind that group but it makes as much sense as anything else.
There are countries, where homeschooling is prohibited (i.e. Germany). So, homeschooling there is out of the picture. I think, the head of government is in on this. If not, the government could do something to the school, so it gets public. I would find it interesting to know, if in these schools are school holidays (school vacation) and when. In Germany, in each of the 16 Bundesländer, these are on different dates an the duration is a bit different.
What happens if you have a PM, or family, who doesn’t want to play ball and tries to go public? The secrecy law is a wizard law and doesn’t apply to muggles. I can well imagine there are some who would love to bring the wonders and benefits of magic to the world at large. Either on principle, or for political, or financial exploitation.
Why did Harry only get his 1st Hogwarts letter in the owl post and not hand delivered by a Hogwarts representative. After the first letter was torn up, they knew to send more letters, why not use a representative to deliver the 2nd letter. They also knew that the Dursley’s were the worst type of muggles, so why persist in sending thousands of letters before getting Hagrid to deliver the Hogwarts letter. What McGonagall to busy. Was Hagrid the best magical representative (best for the story). Just wondering.
I’ve always thought that there were Muggle born wizards in key places to make sure everything remains secret. Someone who works at King’s Cross, some one in the post office, etc. I don’t see Dumbledore and McGonagall going to Muggle parents and explaining everything. I don’t think they have the time. I would think a lot of Muggle parents would have a lot of questions and need more than one visit to make sure everything is on board. We know that the Grangers are able to access Diagon Alley so I think there must be a Muggle parents day where all the Muggle parents can come on that day, get supplies, meet teachers, exchange muggle money into wizard money etc. I imagine it is like Parents Day at a university and then on their way out of the Leaky Cauldron, they forget and think they just had a nice campus visit. Or on a more sinister note once they are leaving, a curse is put on them that makes them forget what they were going to say if they were about to divulge something magical to another Muggle. Or their jaw locks up or something. We know if a Muggle got too close to where the Quidditch World Cup was in GOF, they would suddenly remember an appointment or remember something else so I imagine if a Muggle parent started to tell another Muggle, something like that might happen. That does bring up an ethics question though. Is it is ethical to manipulate Muggle parents like that or does the International Statute of Secrecy trump the parents free will? I don’t see Dumbledore being on board with cursing Muggle parents to forget but other wizards might not have a problem with it and I don’t really see another way of insuring that the Muggle parents don’t talk.
The thing I never understood was how okay Hermione’s parents were with her never being home. I get the need for Hogwarts but eventually Hermione starts staying for Christmas (at the school) & then summers (with the Weasleys) … like I’d miss my kid too much lol then she was always seemed quite independent.
This is a brilliant question to a very important question. I couldn’t think of anything off the top of my head but right when you mentioned UK government in the know I felt stupid for not considering the Prime Ministers and their roll in the Wizarding World. Honestly JK Rowling is quite the literary genius. Though not perfect, she covers any and most glaringly obvious plot holes. Nice one 👍
the member of staff sent is picked to best suit the future student and their family so as to ensure things are made clear and also explain that the school is a real one and is known of by the government they just have no idea where it is due to the way the magical world is being hidden from non magical people
Ah yes. There was a fanfic that i read awhile ago that actually nailed this issue. Of course, it IS a fanfic, so its nowhere near canon. But, they did it well enough that it might be able to fit right in. Anyways, in this fanfic, theres a ministry approved “super elite” school, called Pemberly, or something, that muggles can apply for, but will be rejected for “not meeting criteria.” And its what the ministry suggests muggleborns say when someone asks what school they went to, since they obviously cant just say Hogwarts. It’s going to inspire jealousy, but it also stops pretty much all of the awkward questions. Like i say, nowhere near canon, but it works out well enough.
Wizards could own a muggle school and claim that the students are going to that school. If they own the school, they could have empty rooms and control the paperwork. The school would have a real physical address that the post office could deliver to. For students on the wizard list, their mail would be forwarded to Hogwarts via owl. Was there a period where wizards didn’t know about computers and a muggle parent could type in secret information?
U gotta read the books in the ones where voldemort makes his return the minister of magic was in contact with the newly elected prime minister of GB he does a customary visit/ briefing to the winner of the office educating them on the magical world how they would interact basically saying hello im …. i run the magical world equivalent of u and …… thus so long as nothing big happens we will never meet again. Then his return happens and has to do visits alot to the point the prime min can tell fudge is going to pieces with each visit. I dont recall if each prime min got mind wiped of wizard world after leaving or get to remember but im leaning towards mind wiped for better secrecy. So im sure they got all sorts of stuff set up like wizard schools as boarding schools as they do live there during school yr. So all legal muggle stuff is pretty stream lined as they can charm the red tape away and if a prime minister is not good they rig the elention or remove the undesired winner after and c how willing replacement is to play ball til it works.
Hogwarts predates all modern legislation about schooling so, as long as there is someone from the magical world in a position to influence it, there could be all sorts of loopholes built in that effectively allow Hogwarts to get around all the rules about disclosing its students’ educational status. Kind of like how we know that the late Queen made it quietly known to the government that certain legislation (e.g. declaring income) would not be a good idea and thereby got the laws re-written in such a way that it doesn’t apply to her.
Must be hard for muggle borns cause it doesn’t stop there . If you go to Hogwarts you prob will have a magical job how do you talk about that at family holidays lol they don’t learn history or even current events. How do they traverse both worlds . All their classes seem to be revolving around magic do they even learn advanced maths?
If I was a muggleborns parent I would brag about how my child is learning life skills at a specialized boarding school. I would love telling friends about how they learned cooking, history, botany, animal care, a verity of sciences, mathematics, and that they love there teacher Ms.McGonagle who teaches them to think outside the box and create new uses for other things. To use their imagination to make things possible with what they have at hand. I would find a way to have my child summer school so they have a good understanding of both worlds. Who knows maybe magic needs a bit more science 😉
Why is this even a Question they would either tell there close friends the truth or simply tell them there Kid were away at School and as for the Government. They had direct contact with the Muggle Government. “It was headed by the Minister for Magic. By 2019, the Minister for Magic was Hermione Granger. Each Prime Minister of Great Britain was visited by the Minister for Magic. During the height of the Dark Lord’s power, the Minister for Magic worked with the Muggle Prime Minister to ensure protection for the Muggle world.”
I can’t believe you even asked that question at the beginning, I went to boarding school, do you think the police came and arrested my parents because I went missing? No because I went to boarding school I just told my friend I was going to boarding school and my parents got, the right to tell all their friends I went to boarding school he wouldn’t matter that the boarding school for magic you just missed the magic bit out there’s two exist boarding schools in the muggle world. In the UK anyone who can go to A&E or use the phone and phone for an ambulance get medical treatment it doesn’t matter if you’re actually a kid or not even if you were a person never registered never got a birth certificate in the UK you still get free health insurance
Could it be maybe that, those muggles who acknowledge magic are the ones who produce muggleborns, because inherently they recognize magic and that internalized knowledge make them pass it down their kids’ genes? And with this in mind; could it be that it is why it’s so ‘easy’ or natural for them (muggle parents) to not be surprised, appalled by their kids being “magical beings”? 🤔 What eventually would make it more easy for them to handle the whole ‘secrecy’ process? (Because they acknowledge magic and don’t reject it, therefore would be keen and willing to protect their kids’ right to be private about magic? 🤔) (I am sure Hogwarts’ representatives would train them in the process and what to say, do, but that would not be enough. Imagine if it’s someone who views magic as something negative? So i think, it’s those who see magic (even tho they are not magical people/practicians of magic) in a positive way, that “develop” a gene/force in them that could allow them to conceive a magical being/child. 🤔) Edit: had to fix the typos 🤭.
Only flaw that comes to mind regarding your theories is Hermione. Hermione erased her existence from their minds, but there would be records of her all over. I believe (in the movie) showed her disappearing from pictures, but would that affect every record, picture and person who had a casual knowledge of her.
Maybe someone that knows more about the inmost lore of the Wizarding World can explain this to me – how do Muggleborns even happen? Wizards are often described as being an entirely different species, how does an entirely nonmagical family just… Produce a witch or wizard? Is the explanation ‘lol magic’? I’m assuming the explanation is ‘lol magic’.
I’d say there has to be more than just the Prime Minister in the Muggle government who knows what’s going on. It’s a temporary position. There are lifetime bureaucrats who do the real work of government. Most of them have far better knowledge of the ins and outs of running the country and all the paperwork required than elected officials do. Most likely there’s a government agency, possibly recruited from Muggle born parents/relatives, that handles all the false paperwork. Registering Hogwarts, possibly under a fake name, as a legitimate Muggle school is the most likely explanation. There might even be a fake location which has the reverse illusion that Hogwarts has.
So, basically Salazar was right all along. For real, with the Statute of Secrecy, the amount of mental gymnastics around muggleborns is appaling, on every step. But the more appaling thing is Hogwarts itself where they are not given ANY kind of support, but rather thrown in as kittens into a river. And our perfect and beloved Big D never lifted a finger to do anything about it. For real. Sometimes I think it would do more harm than good for these kids themselves. They basically lose EVERYTHING they know and for what? Mediorce half-education? Because Hogwarts IS mediocre at best. So, ok, once in a while there might be a student as bright as Mione, but what if they’re… not that much to speak about and would be more successful in the Muggle world? Let’s face it. It wasn’t Mione who got lucky with the Wizarding World. It was the Wizarding World. But what about all these less fortunate kids?
Why do you always pigeon hole it around Hogwarts and England ?? How is this relevant in other countries around the globe.?? What would happen when the ministry of magic approached Hitler and Hirohito when thy took office and found out about the wizarding world ??? They would have used this knowledge to recruit loyal muggleborn wizards and witches to fight for them during WWII.
I’d be in fear for a kid to be born into a family of radical religious people. From the very beginning, Harry Potter was chastised by Christians and Catholics all over. Heck, Pokémon was as well. Commercials made my father flip out like you wouldn’t believe. One summer I stayed a week with him and when finding out one of my Gameboy Color games was HP, he drove me alllll the way across the city to drop it off because he didn’t “want that damned witchcraft in (my) house”. In the movie universe, one could imagine a religious nutball parent being like the one from Carrie ~ mother abusing kid just for existing and using crosses as weapons/torment. In reality, it’s something I’d welcome, albeit a bit jealous of a family member for obvious reasons. Who knows, maybe Hogwarts would still hire just like they did Filch.
Harry Potter is in Europe not the US so I think for a more accurate article you should have told us the rules or the UK and children going to school according to the government since this is supposed to be set in Harry Potter universe that we all know is in Europe it doesn’t make sense to go outside the lore and go based on the United States attendance laws
It’s surprising to see how Slytherin is the only one (that we know of) connected to the newer generations, and not any of the other 3 founders. You’d imagine at least Gryffindor to have some distant relation to the Potter or Weasly family or something. I suppose maybe he has and we just don’t know (yet). But still, it would be dope to see how the other three connect to the newer generations.
I think there’s more connections than everyone knows. It’s said that the muggle-born are not completely muggle, because they’ve ancestors who were wizards, just somewhere in the line there was probably a squib who left the wizarding world and they married someone who isn’t a wizard, and after some generations they forget
According to the Internet, Alice Longbottom’s maiden name was Prewett but she wasn’t Molly’s sister. Harry’s grandmother Euphemia’s maiden name was Braithewaite, also connecting another family in the process. There was also a few Potters between Hardwin and Henry: Ralston (17th century) and Abraham. Astoria Greengrass had a sister named Daphne. Edit: I should also note that there’s a Ravenclaw from Harry’s time named Anthony Goldstein in school but that’s probably from another line of the Goldstein family.
I would still count Sirius being part of Potter family as James adopted brother since he did say he was sort of adopted by them/they generously adopted after he ran away from home and was disowned by Black Family in Order of the Phoenix novel Also kind of consider Teddy Lupin as part of Potter family as well since Harry did help raise him in a way he’s sort of his surrogate father like Sirius was too him and that’s if Rowling later confirms that Teddy marries Victoire since Lily hoped her cousin Victoire would marry him making him an official member of Potter/Weasley family
Also, it’s just a theory right now, but I suspect Credence’s mother was a member of the Gaunt line. Isolt’s magical daughter never had children wanting that bloodline to die, but her squib sister did marry and had children who could have eventually led to Credence. If that’s the case the Dumbledore family will connect to everyone from both series.
the family tree would increase much more if the maurader lore is added with the snape/prince family, meadowes, the notts, the Avery family, mentioned Muciber family members, Alice Longbottom being a Prewett, Immigrant families like the Zanbinis and the Pettigrew family, not to mention the bones, the goldstein branch in britain
It’s not that far fetched considering that in real life most people were closely related especially if they lived in the same village or city. It’s not that uncommon for regular folk to be distantly related to ancient royalty. Considering that the wizarding pure blood families are not that numerous it would only be logical for them to be related. Edit: This only demonstrates the attention to detail the author used creating her world using historical and demographical precedent that ultimately leads to an even greater plot.
This is one reason why I’ve always loved the wizarding world because it reminds me so much of my mum’s family. Everyone from her village is related one way or another. And to make things more complicated, you have 2nd and 3rd marriages and even illegitimate children added to the mix. What makes my mum’s family tree even more difficult is that we follow a patronymic naming system. So your surname is your father’s first name. Being such a remote village and country means the culture is still quite strong with hardly any outside influence just like the wizarding world. Love this article, keep up the good work.
Sirius literally says that in the books that pure blood are so few in number that if the ones who wanted to remain pureblood keep marrying within themselves and thus were all related. Arthur Weasley was his cousin and Molly was his sister by law (that’s his statement in book). Also his sisters all married into different family, 2 of which were pureblood and one muggle and 2 of them had kids thus the line continues.
That’s a fantastic family tree! Well done for making it, it must have taken a lot on your part! I have to say though, something I would have loved to be canon in the series would be the revelation that Harry Potter was actually the Heir of Slytherin all along, and Voldemort was really the Heir of Gryffindor all along (and thanks to his Muggle parentage no less, maybe a product of a scandalous marriage between Gryffindor’s son named “Harold Godricson” and Slytherin’s disowned squib daughter). That would have been a shocking twist and also prove Dumbledore’s statement of “it’s our choices rather than what we are that defines us” in Chamber of Secrets more valid.
Dude, you’re really perfect. it’s so hard to find and link them together that it burned my brain even while perusal it. It’s like perusal family tree articles about Greek mythology. I’ve been in the Wizarding World for over 7 years, but every time I see something new to surprise. Rowling has done an excellent job building this universe, although she annoys us in some ways. Downright flawless
the Dumbledore family I believe you could add in to this. My theory is that Dumbledore is a descendant of Antioch Peverall, I think it just makes so much sense for his character, rhymes with him possessing the Elder Wand throughout most of the story up until his death and ties into the side of him that lusts for power that he supresses because it scares him, whereas Antioch was killed because he lacked that self control. This leaves the 5 heads of house in the series, Snape, McGonnagal, Sprout, Flitwick and Slughorn not connected to the tree which I think is quite neat
I’ve always found the relations interesting. I studied the black family tree mostly and found it interesting how many family it connected. While doing a intensive search on them I found the connection twice with the weasley’s we know due to two Black’s marrying a Prewitt and a Weasley who we know eventually marry. Theres also the relationship to the Potter which makes James and Sirius relationship even better when you think of it. I was surprised to find out the Longbottom’s marry into the Black, I knew a few like the Crouch’s, Rosiers and Crabbe’s but hadn’t realized the longbottom to also be part of the family till a few days prior.
If you think about wizarding ability as a recessive genetic trait that was originally caused by a random mutation, nearly everyone with powers could potentially be linked back to a single ancestor. Of course there is more to genetics than just dominant and recessive genes, so that could explain squibs and muggle borns.
That’s an insane look into wizarding geneology! And I was one of the few people in my high class that knew the word Genology let alone what it meant! But boy if they used those DNA kits they have for us “Muggles” they’d be really in for shock because I doubt they can keep it straight as well. I hope you didn’t hurt your brain too much doing this. But its quite instresting. Again begging you to do other Rick Ridorn series articles. Not just Percy Jackson. Really like to hear about Magnus and the Kane Chronics. Have a nice evening and hope you are keeping cool. Since I have no idea where you live and its simply summer I hope you have good ac.
Hold up the Dursleys are related to the Syltherins? AND HARRY IS RELATED TO VOLDEMORT? Edit: wait wait, harry is related to draco..? And he is related to Tonks and Lupin? Neville too?? CROUCH. FLIPPING CROUCH? Well, harry is related to Ron I guess. WAIT A MINUTE IS HARRY RELATED TO GINNY WHICH MEANS- oh Hermione is related to Ron, harry too- WAIT- Edit 2: yeah I’m sorry this was dumb I was just really clueless and suprised
8:10 there is an issue, Neville grandmother’s maiden name wasn’t Longbottom, you can’t just connect a few people just based on their last name, this has happened earlier in the article but this is stupid. How would Neville have the last name longbottom if that was his grandmas last name, there is also no proof or record of Harfang’s children’s names
The only thing we know about The Dumbledore family is his father was pure blood, his mother was magical but muggle born and they grew up in Godrick’s Hollow and so did their ancestors. They have to be related to some sort of pure blood family we just aren’t told. It helps keep more mystery about Dumbledore.
Teddy and victoires kids will be truly extraordinary cause: -They have Weasley, Delacour, and Black blood, they are related to almost every character in the series -They might be the only people to ever have Animagus, Veela, and Werewolf blood in them All the generations before them had been sorted into either Slytherin, Hufflepuff, or Gryffindor
Ok when doing family trees when you say characters are related that implies by blood. The Dursleys are not related by blood to any characters except Harry and Lily. While Ron and Ginny are Harry’s distant cousins (on Harry’s dad’s side), Hermione comes from a completely separate line. Important distinction
at first i was like ‘what? HOw CaN EvErY SiNgLe fAMily bE RElatEd?’. but now i understand but throughout the entire article i thought about the other three founders, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff and Renowa Ravenclaw. again this explained almost all of the Harry Potter franchise and i am really thankful you made this article. this has been appearing on my for you page for weeks and i was a fool to resist when i know for a fact that you make awsome articles. before this was in my opinion very underrated. 🙂
