I’ve found that when I set my phone’s timer alarm for 3 minutes I’m much more regular in my practice, but usually run the timer twice more to make about 9 or 10 minutes total. I think when my mind is in a busy state it’s willing to “give up” 3 minutes but not 10 or more. Once I experience the meditation I know that I need more of it. It seems to me that when I’m not caught up in a whirlwind of activities my mind still can be, so your prompt to let it go is also good for relieving a physically inactive period of mental distraction.
