The South African Department of Employment and Labour (UIF) offers a free online service called uFiling, which allows users to securely submit their UIF declarations and pay their monthly contributions. As an employed female contributor to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), workers can apply for maternity benefits when they go on maternity leave. To qualify, the application should be made prior to the birth of a child or within 12 months of the child’s birth and the contributor must be receiving less than normal wages. If the contributor has been contributing to UIF for the last four years, they are entitled to four months of maternity leave. For every six months worked, they can claim one maternity benefit.
Workers on maternity leave can apply for benefits at their nearest labor center in person or arrange for someone to go. The uFiling system also allows individuals to apply online for various UIF benefits, including unemployment, maternity, illness, and adoption benefits. To claim maternity benefits, workers must be receiving less than their normal wages while on maternity leave.
To claim UIF maternity benefits, workers must register at the Labour Office and obtain a medical certificate on the correct form from their doctor. There are three ways to apply for UIF maternity benefits: visiting the nearest labor center and applying physically, or organizing for someone to go. The traditional route involves initiating the claim by visiting the nearest Department of Employment and Labour or UIF office in person.
