Would The New Healthcare System Pay For Viagra But Not Pregnancy?

The US healthcare system has been criticized for not adequately covering the use of Viagra, a medication used in obstetrics. A study conducted in 2023 found that insurance companies treat Viagra for men and birth control for women differently, highlighting inherent sexism and legal biases. The cost of phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor drugs, such as sildenafil and tadalafil, is estimated to be as low as $2 per 50 mg tablet. This is in line with the growth of telemedicine and the need for higher-value, lower-priced ED drugs.

The Biden administration introduced new policies to improve maternal health, including minimum standards for maternity care. However, some NHS trusts and boards are still basing their practices on midwifery. The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has called out the government’s record on maternity funding, which leaves some NHS trusts and boards focusing on midwifery.

Research funding has been criticized for neglecting women’s health, with the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) requiring insurance companies to cover all FDA-approved contraception. Spravato, the first FDA-approved psychedelic therapy, outsold Viagra. Johnson and Johnson’s ketamine-based formulation generated $183 million in Q3.

Investors that fund new drugs often neglect women’s health, as they are often unable to receive basic healthcare, including maternity care. Sildenafil citrate was found to be cost-saving compared to standard care, saving £92 per birth in the UK (AU$303 per birth in Australia). Under the proposed Republican health care bill, contraception may no longer be covered, but Viagra may still be covered.
