Who In Jamaica Is Eligible For Maternity Leave?

The Jamaica Information Service (NIS) has announced the government’s intention to increase maternity leave and introduce leave for new fathers and adoptive parents. Female employees in Jamaica are entitled to 3 months of maternity leave, with the first 2 months being paid at the regular salary rate, and the last month being unpaid. Some companies choose to pay for the full 3-month period, although it is not mandatory.

To qualify for the allowance, domestic workers must have paid at least 26 NIS contributions in the last 52 weeks preceding the period for which the maternity leave is granted. Maternity leave can be claimed no earlier than 11 days.

Pregnant employees are entitled to 12 weeks of maternity leave once one year of service has been completed. Maternity pay is paid for a period of eight weeks.

The Jamaica Information Service provides updates on the government’s decision to increase maternity leave and introduce leave for new fathers and adoptive parents. The President of the People’s National Party (PNP), Mark Golding, has also announced the government’s intent to update the terms of maternity leave and introduce a provision for new fathers and adoptive parents.
