When Did Miss Universe Begin Wearing Ethnic Attire?

Miss Universe has a rich history of national costumes, with some of the most iconic designs being from the past. In 2002, Miss USA Shauntay Hinton competed in the national costume contest dressed as a New York firefighter holding the American flag in honor of the 9/11 tragedy. Miss Canada, Chanel Beckenlehner, posed for the judges wearing a hockey-themed costume during the 63rd annual Miss Universe Competition in Miami, Fla. The 72nd Miss Universe National Costume Show took place in El Salvador on November 18, 2023, with 84 delegates competing for the prestigious “Force” title. The event showcased the costumes of Miss USA, Miss Puerto Rico, Miss Phillippines, Miss Brazil, and more. The pageant, founded in 1952 by Pacific Knitting Mills, was inspired by various American landmarks, such as dictionaries, plantains, fighter planes, and the Swiss Guard. The color palette of Miss Spain’s flamenco-inspired gown was inspired by carnations. The 72nd Miss Universe pageant took place in beautiful El Salvador, where 84 delegates vied for the prestigious “Force” title. Some argue that the outfit created by pageant designer Patrick Isorena is intentionally camp, but others find it laughable and embarrassing.

  • Colombia, India, Jamaica, Korea, Mexico, Nepal, Russia, Thailand, Ukraine, Vietnam were all beautiful and well represented. I think Mexico and Vietnam were my favorites! The costumes were so well done artistically, well represented culturally, and weren’t over-done. St. Lucia was fun and feminine! 🌸🪻 Bless Miss USA’s heart. She was a good sport coz that looked heavy and she looked uncomfortable. And my God, Puerto Rico was absolutely gorgeous! 🤩😍

  • Miss Laos, thank you for incorporating a group of people that often don’t have a country and rarely have little to no representation on the stage. There are millions of Hmong girls, young and old, who are so excited and crying tears of joy seeing you on stage. You inspire many to be more than staying invisible when we know support for us is often smaller than most.

  • Two artistic suggestions: the lights in the backdrop should change with each country, in harmony with the individual costumes. Drama, magic and spectacle would be added. Also as a gesture of peace, each contestant should bow slightly to acknowledge the other as they pass. A wondrous display. The male and female voices are superb here.

  • Oh God! how elegant the Mexican dress is. It does not have the fantasy to show a typical symbol of the country (like the Netherlands,) but it combines several elements from various Mexican states’ characteristics as the charro dress with flowers from the native groups, the cape from the “fiesta brava”, etc. Definitely, it is a gorgeous stylized dress, as well as the Russian!

  • all of these women are beautiful. i just wish to see more representation when it comes to some of the south east/south asian and some south american countries. dark skin, thick dark hair, wide or curved noses, etc. i feel many of the women represent the westernized (eurocentric) beauties of their nation. would be nice to see women with ethnic features familiar to these countries and it’s history

  • All girls are beautiful^^ If we talk about appearance. The costumes are a work of art. I also watched some articles about girls and I am delighted with Miss Russia ❤A girl without any pathos, refined, kind and especially beautiful. It is very strange that people in the hall did not show much support, unlike Ukraine. For me, sh e has the usual pretty appearance) there are too many such ladies. About how she behaves, I generally keep quiet о.о

  • For me Kyrgyzstan girl is a real dove, so gentle and graceful.😍 And Miss Mexico is just a real flame! Miss Venezuela looks like a goddess! Looks like Miss Ecuador stole half of the sun – she glows so much! Miss Russia is simply luxurious, so stately and elegant. I sympathize with the jury; it is very difficult to choose the very best of these nymphs.

  • 35:00 Business Insider did a great article about the lotus silk industry. The fibers are extremely difficult to extract, and artisans’ greatest concern is attracting apprentices who are willing to learn such a delicate and time-consuming trade. Still, lotus silk can be 3x as expensive as typical silk and could be an incredible source of not only wealth but national identity since it is made using the waste products of the national flower. It’s seriously so cool that Miss Myanmar used it as the inspiration for her costume and is calling attention to the trade. 🙂

  • Seeing Laos hurt a bit… my first girlfriend was Hmong. She commented how she was getting a new outfit for rituals/ceremonies, I never got to see her in that outfit before she broke up with me saying “You deserve better than me, I feel your love but I don’t know if I can ever feel the same way. I hope you find someone who will love you as much as you loved me.” Damn Miss Universe Laos getting to my emotions.

  • Puerto Rico: Ashley Cariño Haiti: Mideline Phelizor Australia: Monique Riley Dominican Republic: Andreína Martínez Laos: Payengxa Lor South Africa: Ndavi Nokeri Portugal: Telma Madeira Canada: Amelia Tu Peru: Alessia Rovegno Trinidad and Tobago: Tya Jané Ramey Curacao: Gabriëla Dos Santos India: Divira Rai Venezuela: Amanda Dudamel Spain: Alicia Faubel United States: R’Bonney Gabriel Colombia: María Fernanda Aristizábal

  • It is not about the costumes only but also about how the Misses represent them! Some were extremely heavy to carry so the Misses could not show their catwalk easily. On the contrary, some other costumes were so light and trivial. But the true thing is that there is tremendous work behind the costumes! Well done!

  • 49:43 Miss India Universe 🇮🇳 This is really Nice and elite representation by Miss India. Miss India is wearing Traditional Indian attire similar to what is worn by brides during weddings in the northern region of Asian sub continent. The Chattar ☂️ i.e. umbrella in the hands of Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu symbolises Universality and Protection which is the most essential character of Confidently Beautiful women. Confidently Beautiful from City beautiful, Chandigarh – Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu, 21- Miss India Universe.

  • My favorite costume was El Salvador, she perfectly represented how the justice system is blind to crimes against women, but in my opinion, to all crimes against humanity. I do not agree with whoever asked her to remove the blindfold. It undermines the message she is portraying and also, is turning a blind eye to these injustices. I was born in Nicaragua, but raised in the United States, and understand the importance of getting that message across.

  • 🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳During the recent covid 19 pandemic, people in the Mekong Delta made thousands of Bánh Tét (a traditional type of glutinous rice cake) and sent them to all regions to support people affected by the Covid 19 pandemic. That’s why we are proud to bring to Miss Universe the traditional costume named “Ai Tet Hongggg”. I love Miss Vietnam Nguyen Huynh Kim Duyen!🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳 Her outfit weighs more than 30kg.

  • I was pleasantly surprised by the Miss Kenya costume, it incorporated the environmental concerns like most other costumes did. Miss Argentina’s costume drove the plastic point home quite simply. Miss Nigeria with the masquerade, etc etc. Infact I love all the costumes and watched the entire article without skipping. Well done to all the designers and the contestants for representing your countries and heritages beautifully

  • 1:20:00 Philippines bringing something new and fresh to the international stage. I love how the costume highlights an interesting creature in the Philippine mythology. It goes to show that Philippines also has a compelling literature that people should start to notice. Also, it is awesome that the costume metaphorically represents Miss Philippines’ evolution to becoming the empowered and modern woman she is right now. Go for the fifth 👑🇵🇭

  • It is really sad that people are being mislead far from the idea of Miss Universe now. Yes! We know that Miss Universe shall be glamorous, beautiful, and classy. But I hope everyone remembers the very core of Miss Universe and that is to influence people, to showcase confidence that is beyond eyes’ perspective, and to let people feel that they are included and equally treated. Miss Universe must show us the confidence without make up. She’s breaking the beauty standards and rise up the face of a daily woman. Influence, confidence, elegance, and intelligence doesn’t need heavy make ups and sexiest body. Miss Universe aims to find a woman who knows the struggle of her people. A woman who takes actions bigger than words. A woman who can listen to everyone from different ages, genders, races, and cultures. A woman that does not only conquers the stage but also beyond the universe. We need inclusivity. We want positivity. We love equality. And hopefully, may the deserving woman serves her universe and not the chair of her palace.
