  • The secret to reading and comprehending is that you need to imagine while reading. Imagine the sentences as you are reading, your brain will comprehend and remember much better. Don’t just read left to right, first page to last page, read and imagine while reading. It’s the only trick that has been working for me. It make take a little more time, but you won’t have to re-read everything over and over again

  • Speaking of wasted time, here’s a tip for content creators on YouTube: don’t waste time in your article explaining to me why I clicked on the article. I know why I clicked on the article because I read the title. The first 3 minutes of this article is wasted. The next minute is laboring an analogy to exercise. You don’t actually get to your technique until 5 minutes has passed and I’m fidgeting in my seat. If this was translated into written word, it’s the kind of content I would skim over. Material with lots of fluff like this is exactly why people want techniques for better reading comprehension. Their brain is busy filtering out and forgetting useless information and this becomes a habit when done across a span of content. We want more pure content and less bullshit.

  • Entertaining lesson what lovely charming young lady. I will make note of this technique, “what I know”,” what I wish to know”, and “have learned”. I had solicitors letter nothing drastic, but have not a clue what most of it is saying. I was looking for methodology when I came here, trying to understand the jargon in the letter to better understand its contents. I would have rather throw in my lot with Albert Einstein. Although Emma speaks clearly, she is very thoughtful writing out transcript for us as well as putting subtitles.

  • When I read, I understand I delve myself to another creature’s point of view. So the warm up period for me is read it despite difficulties with cool down period, to slowly or stop and return to it later on. By the time I reach the part of chapter where the author and I meet a common ground, I re-read the first chapters and understand these better.

Still, many of us would not take the trouble to create the three columns for KWL on a sheet of paper and actually fill them out. So, do you feel there’s another way of practising the KWL technique other than writing on a piece of paper?   • Hello Emma, I am so Jane Austin person, I am keen on her novels, but once I read them in an English version I faced a serious difficulties, I can’t finish two chapters in a row without asking for help from google translate😅, and guess what even when I translate some words I found like the meaning makes the overall concept kinda confusing 😑, The old English is really harder, also I already follow this technique, (sort of), I use the notes app in my phone to quote some interesting statement, I will follow it completely.   • Thank you for your information. However, what frequently frustrates me about information such as this is how do I know that it’s not just yet another strategy? What makes this better than another strategy? What are the downsides? Any kind of research to support why this method is better than another? Even without research per se, I think there should at least be some pros and cons or some kind of theory behind why this would work better than something else? Or does it not really matter what strategy you choose as long as you choose any strategy?

Often reading may come across as insignificant yet it was the most important attribute in the “Old Days”…as Abraham Lincoln once said, but don’t quote me, “I learned to read and to cypher”. As our world progresses and modernizes these important skills may not e looked upon as great. Imagine making reading more interested for children who now suffer with some loss of interest in reading or may feel it to be too difficult.
