Personality development is a complex process influenced by life experiences, personal growth, and major life events. It is the unique combination of characteristics that define an individual’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors across different situations and throughout their life. Personality theories in psychology aim to provide a framework to understand human personality, including the causes and motivation for these thoughts, behaviors, and actions.
The major influence on personality is nonshared environmental influences, which include variability in brain structure, nutrition, education, upbringing, and interactions among genes. These differences can affect psychological development and contribute to the development of personality traits such as neuroticism and extraversion.
Decades of research have been dedicated to understanding how personality changes across the lifespan, with consensus that personality traits are influenced by various factors. The Five-Factor Theory, which proposes that personality is based on biology, uses the Big Five traits as a foundation. However, chronic stress can affect both mental and physical health, which can influence personality traits like neuroticism and pessimism.
Personality development is influenced by a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Social cognitive theory suggests that personality formation occurs when people observe the behaviors of others, leading to adaptation and assimilation.
Trauma and adversity, such as abuse, neglect, or exposure to violence, can have significant long-term effects on personality. Genetically informed cross-sectional studies have made important contributions to personality psychology by demonstrating that higher order traits are influenced by genetic factors. Erikson’s theory suggests that each stage plays a significant role in the development of a person’s personality and psychological skills.
📹 The Big Five Personality Traits
The theory of the Big Five Personality Traits, claims that we can describe ourselves with five main characteristics: Openness, …
What are the greatest influences on personality development?
This lesson explores the three main influences on personality development: heredity, environment, and situation. Heredity refers to the traits that are inherent in an individual, such as temperament and appearance. Environment is the nurturing aspect of our lives, including home, school, work, and other places we spend a lot of time. Factors such as languages and religion also play a role in shaping our personality.
Situations are the experiences that an individual goes through, such as divorce, death, trauma, and happy times. These experiences leave imprints on our personality, determining how we react to situations and how we interact with others. Overall, these factors play a crucial role in shaping our personalities.
What are the big five factors of personality development?
The Five Factor Model is a personality assessment tool that categorizes an individual into five broad dimensions: Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Openness, and Stress Tolerance. These dimensions are universally applicable across cultures and geographies. Personality tests based on this model measure an individual’s level of agreeableness, which reflects their social harmony, cooperation, and team interaction. Agreeableness measures an individual’s social harmony tendencies.
What are the factors that influence developmental psychology?
Psychosocial well-being is a crucial aspect of a child’s overall health and development. It encompasses their emotional, social, and psychological state, including their ability to regulate emotions, develop healthy relationships, and adapt to different environments. Key psychological factors that influence child development include cognitive development, emotional factors, motivation, social interactions, perception and beliefs, family environment, family dynamics, and peer relationships.
Which influences our development and personality the most?
Over the past two decades, scientists have made significant progress in understanding the role of genetics in behavior. Behavioural genetics studies have found that genetics is more important than parental influence for most traits, and molecular genetics studies have begun to pinpoint the specific genes causing these differences. However, this assumption is mistaken, as the results of all research must be interpreted carefully. As we learn more about the role of genetics, our conclusions about its influence will likely change.
Current research in behavioural genetics is often criticized for making assumptions about how researchers categorize identical and fraternal twins, whether twins are treated the same by their parents, and whether twins are representative of children more generally.
Nonshared environmental influences, such as variability in brain structure, nutrition, education, upbringing, and interactions among genes, also play a significant role in personality. These differences include variability in brain structure, nutrition, education, upbringing, and interactions among genes themselves.
What has the largest influence on personality?
Genes are biological units that transmit characteristics from one generation to the next, and personality is not determined by a single gene but by the actions of many genes working together. Behavioral genetics is a research technique used to understand genetic and environmental influences on human behavior, based on family, twin, and adoptive studies. Genetics has more influence than parents on shaping our personality, while Molecular genetics studies which genes are associated with personality traits.
Nonshared environmental effects, which are nonsystematic and largely accidental or random, have the largest impact on personality. We do not inherit our personality in a fixed sense. Exercises and critical thinking can help understand the implications of genetics on personality and whether it “determines” or “does not determine” our personality.
What four factors influence our personality the most?
Environmental factors, such as upbringing, culture, geographic location, and life experiences, significantly influence our personality. Children raised in harmonious environments may have a more positive outlook, while those raised in turbulent households may develop aggression or other adverse traits. The Minnesota Study of Twins, conducted from 1979 to 1999, found that identical and fraternal twins shared about 50 of the same traits, while fraternal twins shared about 20.
70 of the variance in IQ was linked to genetic variations, while the remaining 30 was due to environmental effects. While genetic effects significantly influence personality, other factors like a healthy lifestyle and intellectual activities also play a significant role in overall well-being and development.
What is the most important influence on development?
Caregivers who consistently provide warmth, security, and a sense of security have a positive influence on a child’s development. Meeting physical and dietary needs is essential, as neglect can disrupt development. The rapid physical and psychological changes children undergo from birth to adolescence can leave parents and caregivers wondering how best to support them. The process of child development includes sensory awareness, fine motor skills, language acquisition, and socialization.
Parents and medical professionals typically rely on developmental milestones to track growth relative to their peers. However, every child develops at their own pace, and when benchmarks suggest a child may be significantly delayed, it is important to consult a doctor who can identify developmental disorders and begin treatment as early as possible.
Research in developmental psychology, pediatrics, and neuroscience has concluded that the first five years are especially critical for children, as they begin to explore their environment, learn verbal and reasoning skills, socialize with others, and take steps toward asserting independence from their family. Expert guidance on managing expectations and nurturing best qualities is available.
Children have varying physical and emotional needs depending on their age, personality, and developmental stage. The age of puberty has been dropping for many young people, bringing an increasingly early end to childhood. Both genetic and environmental factors influence the onset of puberty, and its early onset may reflect the stresses a child has experienced.
What is personality development greatly influenced by?
The family environment and parenting styles exert a profound influence on a child’s personality development, influencing the formation of their sense of self and attachment patterns through interactions, the transmission of values, beliefs, and expectations.
What is the strongest influence on a person’s development?
Epigenetics is a field of study that explores the interaction between genes and environment, focusing on how environment can affect gene expression. Height is an example of a trait influenced by nature and nurture, with a child inheriting the genes for height but not achieving it due to a deprived environment. Other traits, such as eye color, hair color, and skin color, are biologically determined but also influenced by environmental factors and lifestyle.
What influences the Big Five personality traits?
The big 5 traits, which include extraversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism, have been extensively studied in psychology to understand their impact on a person’s behavior and character. The theory emerged in 1949 and has been expanded upon by researchers like Norman, Smith, Goldberg, and McCrae and Costa. The five basic dimensions of personality, which include extraversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism, have been used to analyze people’s behavior and character. Initially, over 4000 traits were identified, but when reduced to 16, the concept of the big 5 traits emerged as a way to better understand and analyze people’s behavior.
What are the factors affecting personality development in psychology?
The cultural environment, including traditions and values, exerts a significant influence on a child’s personality development. In addition, physical and social factors, such as the circumstances of birth and living conditions, also exert an influence on the formation of a child’s character.
📹 Who are you, really? The puzzle of personality | Brian Little | TED
What makes you, you? Psychologists like to talk about our traits, or defined characteristics that make us who we are. But Brian …
I was one of those fortunate enough to have him as a professor at Carleton University in the 90s. Best. Class. Ever. He had a profound impact on me and I still remember an astonishing number of details from his lessons. I still find myself quoting him in my daily life. I have never been so thoroughly entertained and enlightened at the same time. I gave him a Thank You card when I graduated, expressing my gratitude for what he gave me. Being his student was truly a gift. Not only was he exceptionally brilliant, but his ability to teach through stories is unparalleled and his ability to humanize experience remarkable. I’m so glad he’s still sharing himself with the world though TED. If you’re reading this Dr. Little, may I once again say Thank you. The world is a better place because you’re in it.
“Your personality is not who you are.” This quote has sat with me for a long time, and has helped me focus on inner dialogue versus outward expression. **As a side note, the quote derives from the lectures of Dr. Gabor mate; he provides more context into those dynamics of personality that can cause a misidentify, etc.
Thank you, Dr. Little for answering questions about “who am I, really”. Actually, I’ve done tests that say I’m an extrovert but I also feel introverted tendencies because I often analyze things in depth, enjoy alone time well, and don’t have as many friends as other extroverts. Until I thought “this test is not accurate” even though the results showed extroverts up to 3 times. Because of this article, I know who or what type of personality you are is not a barrier for you to do things you like or enjoy. We’re more than introvert / extrovert kind of person. What makes difference and sense are these free traits and the way we enact and create a script in order to advance our core project in our life.
When I go out to social events I usually quite enjoy myself but I need a day or two after to get back on track – I get annoyed, extremely tired and grumpy. I never actually thought that was a thing that happened to other people. But when he was talking about how he needs time to recuperate from interactions with other people I felt so reminded of myself. Feel a lot better now
The REAL issue with personality traits is they’re never constant. Everyone’s identity is in perpetual flux, too slowly to notice in real time, but we all feel the disconnect when we look at old photos of ourselves, showing evidence of a personality we no longer identify with… We all know our bodies completely regenerate on a cellular level around every decade or so, no doubt some process of change takes place in the brain’s architecture and encoded data as well, perhaps responsible for the slight variations in our personal identities as we grow and live.
there’s days when, as an introvert, you feel odd, misplaced, not fitting in, alone with how you feel. And then you watch this and you feel like it really is perfectly OK just the way you are. Thank you so much Brian for this talk. And of course making it blatantly clear how limited my vocabulary is to yours.
It started out so playful and interesting. But when he got real: “you’ve been to the hospital 3 times and they still don’t know what’s wrong,” I shed a tear in response to how genuine his demeanor had become. Then seconds later he had me laughing. Thank you sir, for laying your real self out there for the world to see.
I am a psychology student in grade 11th rn, and I find it so fascinating and interesting that I just can’t get enough of it. That is why I try to search such articles apart from the other things that I enjoy. Ever since I’ve entered grade 11th, my life has changed for good. It feels so amazing to have the subjects of my choice and of my interest, and that feeling to be finally free from the subjects that were a nightmare to me is AMAZING. Out of all the subjects that I have as a humanities student:English(compulsory),history, sociology, psychology, and fine arts. I see psychology topping my list of favourite subjects, not like I don’t like the other subjects, but it feels as if psychology was made for me, and I just can’t describe my love for this particular subject. I have had 2 tests of 30 marks so far of psychology, one on the 1st of May and the other 10th of July, and I got a 30 on both of them. I felt like a loser, a below average student, until grade 10th because I couldn’t get good scores even in subjects like history where you just have to memorize, and it frustrated me. I even fell in depression during my grade 9th and 10th. In the 9th, because there was something really complicated going on in my friend circle and 10th because I just got so overwhelmed with subjects like science and mathematics. Though my mom never pressured me to excel in those subjects, I still felt like I had to. My mom never had any expectations from me to top all my classes because she knew I couldn’t with the subjects that I had.
Look up Alan Watts sometime. You can never know who “you” really are. Because there isn’t a real you. You cannot describe yourself in the now without relating yourself to what you have done in the past, or what your interests are -which are things you would rather be doing and goes around the question of describing who you are in the now. We all share that in common. Fun stuff to think about.
Tip: Born an introvert, be like that for first 20-25 years of life. Introverts observe things much better so you’ll learn a lot. Then slightly shift to be a little extrovert get used to switching from one to another. Choose where to be extrovert where to remain silent and observant. Congratulations, now you can rule the life.
Wow, I wish I had people in my life who are expressing themselves as astonishingly as him. I am 18, and I do not mean to pick a fight with my own generation, because I know that someday, some of these people will eventually evolve and grow as individuals and will be able to have rich conversations, but right now, I still feel out of place. This is kind of hard for me because I don’t know how to find people that will be able to help me grow. I do not mean that I don’t have any friends, or that I don’t appreciate them as they are, they are complex and loving people, which make me feel good, make me laugh and are smart. What I mean is that I need people to stimulate my brain the same way some of these incredible professors do.
I am an extreme introvert and everything he said is on point. I tried and pretended to be an extrovert in college because I thought it would be easier to go through college if I was popular and had more friends. Though I did make a few great friends, I also attracted tons of toxic ones and it’s stressful and draining so I just decided to just be true to myself, and I have been happier and more at peace ever since. Most people misunderstand introverts and tend to be put off by our personality. It seems introverts are often perceived to be unfriendly, boring, shy, or snobbish but those who are more informed and try to connect would find that introverts are just calculating, equally daring but reserved, and definitely not shy. Shyness is NOT introversion.
It’s interesting to me that there are so many comments that mention Dr. Little using big words. As someone with a limited vocabulary myself, it’s not that he’s using big words; it’s simply that he speaks so eloquently (and the few big words that he uses, he explains the meaning of). Try listening to a debate between two philosophers sometime! I do agree that this man is a treasure.
I score 97% on the extrovert scale, and Im still learning how to spend time alone. Being in class or thinking about class makes me super energized, Its hard to describe but I can feel waves of energy pulsating through me, especially if the teacher is asking a lot of questions. Means I get to interact. But being alone often gets depressing. I think solo travelling to NY for 3 days was super depressing eventho I met and hang out with 3-4 ppl in my hostel and did tours with them around Manhattan.
Absolutely love it! The vocabulary, the extreme detail of every little thing, this man’s ability to be both funny and serious… I seriously want more from him because I feel that he could change a person’s way of thinking with few words.. let alone a big speech. I also love the shared personal experiences to reinforce his statements. The ending experience was absolutely hilarious and it left me with the biggest smile ever!
i always look at personalities as a cocktail mix of several things – different ingredients at different amounts go into each person and the end-result is always unique. We’d have similar ingredients but at varying amounts and mixing with other ingredients, so even when we share common traits, it’s always different among everyone.
According to him, personalty is comprised of biological, societal, and idiosyncratic factors. Biology determines our stimulation levels ie. whether we are introverted or extroverted-or at least our degrees. Society lays down the rules of social interactions: what is normal and what is abnormal, what is acceptable and what is unacceptable. Society also enables people to discover what kinds of interactions and how much stimulation is comfortable. Idiosyncrasies are the quirks of a person that soon formulate themselves into habits which,in this context, refer to prefered interaction levels. These three factors determine our personality as it pertains to human interaction which shoul mean that all of a person’s selected interactions can be followed and traced by this guideline, but that is not the case, and that is exactly what Prof. Little finds so intriguing about people. People have both the power and tendency to break through their biological, societal, and personal conventions in order to further one’s goals. These goals or “personal projects” as called by Prof. Little are what he defines as the true determinator of who a person is. As a person who believes in self-determinism, I cannot help but interpret “personal projects” as a psychological observation that supports people being able to surpass outside factors as well as person negative outlooks in order to achieve his or her personal goals; a sort of ‘conviction breaks through convention’. However, this begs the question of the strength of both the desire and the determination to obtain said desire.
This just made me more confused lmao. I am uncomfortable with people I don’t know, and act loud and hype with friends only. But still get tired of the interaction and wanna be alone. However I love hugging + getting close to people and really dislike people who won’t hug. And I CAN talk in a weesly way, but I usually just talk black and white, unless its a more serious issue. But then again many of my introvert traits get worse when my self confidence gets lower so I might just be a mix of both 😂 Nice article! Love this man, wish I could be his student!
I am very much an extrovert at heart, but with PTSD, GAD, social anxiety, and the occasional panic attack, I am often forced to behave like an introvert. This is not to say that there is anything pathological about being an introvert when that is what comes naturally to you, but in my case introversion is not my basic nature and it is the pathology of anxiety disorders that cause me to adopt some behaviors that are inconsistent with my extroverted nature. I think this is largely due to having a lower tolerance for stimulation and thus being overwhelmed more easily. I also very much enjoy language, having been brought to literature by my introverted poet of a mother, and can delight in the subtleties of meaning, emotional texture, and clever grammatical twists that someone with a sharp wit can create. However, like a classic extrovert, when it comes to interpersonal communication I want nothing but straightforward clarity. It’s kind of sadly funny. To me the ‘beating around the bush’ style of speech described here as characteristic of introverts comes off at best as confusing and at worst as passive-aggressive, while I’m sure my more direct approach probably comes off to introverts as rude and abrasive. “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so” – Hamlet Act II, Scene 2
The more you learn about personality the more interesting it becomes, before looking at friends I would just think each person is different without thinking much about it, now I can understand that people react in certain ways due to the way their personality reacts with the environment. I really like the 5 traits as it’s simpler to understand but also explains a lot about us. I wonder though if there’s a trait you want to change how hard/easy is it to change it?
Thank you professor! Not just for validating my feeling uncomfortable being around people who are hyper compared to the silence I find comfort in but the persona or pseudo-extroversion that we exhibit to make things easier to understand to people who otherwise cannot comprehend the mental gymnastics that we naturally prefer. Thank you again
Touches on one of other most important concepts of introvert/extrovert qualities and mores that should be reiterated. One is not better than the other. Additionally, you can have qualities of both and still maintain your core characteristics without betraying who you are. For soooooo long extroverts were thought superior to introverts and I’m glad to see the playing field equaled now as it always should have been. You can’t have any business, team, family, work model successfully operate without the inclusion of both types. Great stuff.
I’ve watched Brian’s talk many times, it is one of my fondest moments of learning, laughing and relatability. I am an introvert, but feel nowadays after the loss of someone very close, the urge to socialise, be part of a group, and especially spend time and deepen my relationships with close ones. This is in a sense quite representative of the fact that introverts are not necessarily antisocial. I don’t feel antisocial, but the opposite. I need to build close and deep relationships. Maybe the only differences in socialising is what we want to create in terms of relationship, and how long it takes to create it. Thank you so much Pr. Little for the inspiration, and the laugh.
What a great thought! Thank you Sir for sharing. In order to understand who the person actually is, ask them what is their core project in life. My core project is to help people break foreign language barrier and feel good about themselves expressing their thoughts in foreign languages. So I coach a person to be comfortable with who they are. And I do it through finding and mirroring the superpowers they have in their personalities. And people become happy with themselves. So finally I am the one who induce self love in others. by means of broadening their perception of themselves due to new neuronal links built by foreign language. My core project is to catalyse self love in people. Thank you Professor.
I took the Jordan Peterson big 5 personality course which was very deep in these 5 traits. Has anyone delved into both JP’s course and Brian Littles content? If so, did they compliment each other or have differences? This article and the JP course I’ve found to be insanely enlightening. This speech and OCEAN acronym did a great job at simplifying the big 5. Thanks you
But what about being an ambivert? I was hoping for him to expand more on that. I find myself having equivalent features from both sides, I absolutely adore hanging out with people, but most people aren’t very bright or either lack the knowledge in metaphysical subjects that I find myself interested in, so I tend to reeeeeeally enjoy my alone time where I can sit in my room with my dog, watch Youtube vids, read Wikipedia articles, game, or just browse the interwebz in general where nobody can judge you. Just like Aristotle’s virtues and vices, there’s always a “Golden Mean” when it comes to an excess or deficient amount of something. You should strive to be the mean of two extremes, because too much of anything can be bad for you. Regardless, a very great talk!
Honestly, his way of talking is actually immensely recognisable by me and probably quite a few other introverted types. It’s not quite natural but it’s a developed skill that we introverts tend habituate, continually use and develop to the point it becomes practically a second nature/ ingrained persona. It’s a mix of many different things, including direct and indirect imitation of the mannerisms of extroverts we know and observe, direct consideration of the crowd and situation to which we methodically develop a way of talking to them, and much more general methodologies, techniqued, and even gimmicks and styles which we develop to purposely maintain ourselves in conversation. The funny thing is it means we can be quite good, if perhaps coming of a little strange or eccentric, at addressing and communicating with crowds or large to medium groups, better even than many extroverts, but it’s much harder to break through and dispel the natural sense of awkwardness when talking to a small group or couple of individuals. Edit: reaching the end of the article I think his term “pseudo extroversion” is quite a perfect description of it.
I’ve taken tests that have told me I’m an extrovert but I have a lot of introvert tendencies too, like internalizing information and reflecting on things that have happened. I started to think “maybe I am an introvert, these personality tests aren’t right, right?” Brian summed it up really well is, what you are/these ‘types’ don’t matter, it’s the free type of trait that drives you to do what you got to do for your core projects that really speak for who you really are.
He claims speaking in a nuanced and precise (both things that are often necessary to achieve accuracy) way is a trait that introverts possess and extroverts lack. So is he claiming that all extroverts who go into philosophy or detailed study of science must also become more introverted, as nuanced understanding and conveyance of ideas is necessary in those fields? I don’t think that’s true at all – you can still be extroverted and successful in those fields.
What if I refuse to fit myself in one of these two personalities? I think we humans are more than this. I know there’s “ambivert” too in which you may be both or neither. But I still think just because someone has introvert behaviors sometimes it doesn’t mean that person will forever feel or behave the same way till the end.
This is just full of words, of ideas, but without any connection to reality! He don’t know who he really is, and what he knows were just taken from somebody else, from books he has read, and no personal experience about the nature of life, of who he really is. In other words, he is just lying even unto himself! He only believes he know who he really is, and this belief has given him such confidence. Sad to say, such confidence has no clarity!
🛐🙏❤💓🙏💌💗💕♥️💌❤💖💓♥️💗😭 Heavenly Father Jesus God, I know that I am a sinner. I know I deserve the consequences of my sins. However, I trust in Jesus Christ as my Savior. I believe that his death and resurrection provided my forgiveness. I believe in Jesus and only Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior. Thank you Lord, for saving me and for forgiving me! In the holy name of Jesus Almighty God, Amen!” 💗❤❤💞The message of this gospel is that if you continue to believe in this message, you will be saved: For what I received I gave you as the first priority: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, is buried, according to the scriptures Resurrected on the third day, and appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once
I don’t know if ambivert is a thing but i consider myself to be one. When I want to I love attention and lots of stimulation then there are times when I read the room and much prefer to stay back in a corner. I Can also be spontaneous and direct with my words and others I find the need to articulate. I always blamed it in being a Gemini though 😂 i would like to hear more about ambiverts now I’m intrigued 🤔
there is nothing permanent and fixed . its related to situation and scenario. minute by minute situation changes and non one has ever observed anyone for 24 or 72 or more hours to claim it.what my understanding is that there are dominant behaviors that put others to withdraw and continuous dominance of some in power may make others behave more subdued and might be mistaken for as introverts. every human has their circle where they are open and frank.
I really like his comment of “You’re like some other people and like no other person.” I am currently a medical student learning the art of medicine so I can best serve a wide variety of people, all who will be like som other people and like no other person at the same time. Though they make similar diseases, hometowns, or interest as another patient, they will all be uniquely themselves and I need to rmeember to treat them as such. This is a great reminder of that for myself and for those people that I will see and treat everyday. This is also a great reminder of why autonomy is so important in health care. Autonomy refers to the right and ability of patient to make informed decisions about theier own health care and to have control over their own bodies and treatment options. It resepcts a and emphasizes the importance of self determination and self-understanding. It acknowledges that pateint have their own values, beliefs, and prefrences and that should be resepcted. Autonomy and personality are inherintly linked. Each pateint will understand themselves better than any other person, and therefore wil know what helath care decision is best for them, given that a health care provider provides the patient with clear and understandable information about their medical condition, treatment options, risks, and benefits. Understandig of the complexity of personality and a strong respect for a patients autonomy allows individuals to express that personality, beliefs, and values freely.
He explains We are like no other person and like many other people. Don’t ask people who they are ask them what is their core project. His core project is to profess and mine is to learn. We are different because of our personal project like taking care of child for a single parent, getting a college degree first time in your family.
So I saw a glimpse of myself in that. I think it is my pseudo-extroverted behaviour that work everytime I am around large amount of people. The intent to do something out of usual character so I could somehow blend. But after that pretentious moment, I badly need time to reflect/to relax that said stimulation. So its not me thinking I am sometimes extroverted and most of the times introverted, maybe those sometimes are just my pseudo-extroverted behaviour. Thank you Professor!
People often feel you’re not an introvert because you’re not acting like an antisocial. You are engaging in conversations. However, being an introvert has different shades. I was insulted once because I said I am an introvert by someone close to me. It took a big hit on my mind and gaslighted me to question my perception about myself. I didn’t say an word to him (because I am an introvert). Today I came across this article and it was really comforting.
Grew up my entire life thinking I was introverted. It wasn’t until my late 20s that I realized I am very extroverted just not that great at making new friends 🤣 I realized that I got energized from being around people and love the hustle and bustle. I realized it the most when I went from working in the city to working in the suburbs .. I was MISERABLE and felt like I was in the middle of nowhere Kansas lol
This just describes different traits of autism. I don’t like these terms because I am all of them, partially because of me being autistic. I think most people are all of them if you catch people at different times, including neurotypicals, but especially autistic people. I think extroverted and introverted are states you can be, not personality types. This man is currently being extroverted, but is more commonly introverted, and that complexity is part of human experience. Also the “I overstimulate on coffee” makes me suspect that there may be a little autism in him too.
I’m an extrovert, however I have to admit that introverts are way better friends than extroverts. Extroverts have so many friends that sometimes they forget to really take care of their friendships (talking from my own experience). Anyways, I just want to thank all my introvert fellas for being our friends and giving us some of the calmness and introspection that we lack. Thanks for existing, you make our world more balanced and special 🫶🏼

Personal identity is an illusion. You’re not even the same person today with the one that went to sleep yesterday. Death becomes trivial when you see that truth. You never existed as a single consistent mind, it’s just a story. The you, you were yesterday, didn’t suffer to go out of existence, and your new you tells itself the story that it existed since 1982 or something. It will be the same with the uploaded mind. Do you miss your child existence? That child died. What you have left are just memories.
Everybody has both good and bad personality and character traits and it’s what makes up our entire being. I looked up on the internet once a list of personality and character traits and one of the lists had literally hundreds of them. The reason I did that was because I was doing AA step work which requires working on your character and morals and becoming a better person. Sometimes you may not even realize what some of those traits are you have till you ask other people. There might be things you could do with the positive ones you don’t realize. It’s good to know the bad ones to so you know what to work on and get advice on it. It really helps you to grow

I am a very Stable, Disagreeable, Conscientious and Introverted person. In fact, I am so DISAGRIABLE and STABLE that I consistently only write a comment if I disagree with it. Or if I find someone particularly comfortable (then I make a nice comment). Unfortunately, all I have to say is that I really dislike psychologists and their obsession to find something wrong with others for profit.

This article and the comment section has made me realize how much of an introvert I was, I literally don’t see the point in people liking to interact with others and liking loud places with a lot of people it also made realize how much I love extroverts not only because they carry the conversation but they also give me energy and I’m happy around them

Vladimir Nabokov was always disparaging about Psychology and its ” insights “. If this lecture is a typical example of what it offers then he was right ! Worryingly I notice many comments expressing wonder / astonishment at the ” amazing ” (!) wisdom of the Professor here . Apparently, stating the obvious now passes for ” wisdom “..?
My students loved me, and despite me telling a teacher I was introverted, I was an extroverted type of teacher. Still, Students didn’t get how I could be similar to their introverted ness. But it’s exactly as he said, you are different depending on when you need to and why. My ex fiancé’s best friend asked why I was an extroverted ( “why can’t you be more extroverted). The truth is I am in comfortable and nonjudgmental settings where anxiety isn’t built out of comparison . The fiancé stood there and nodded with his friend . Obviously it’s now an ex, but it took me reading Susan Cain’s book “Quiet” after all that to establish and understand the importance, power, and abilities of introverts in order to fully embrace the next stage end of current embracing living free from feeling less than for not being others’ “ideas”. I’m not sure if you his speaker is the one she talked about in her book, but there was a public speaker that would go to the bathroom and lift their feet up so no one knew they were in there. Maybe this is him. Anyway, I noticed I need recovery energy time after or durning parties and it was me coming into my own healthy introverted Ness to understand I needed to have that energy build up time back. Unfortunately that’s not how the extroverted friend saw it. But how much were they really friends to begin with if they couldn’t accept you for who you are fully? Ultimately there’s no shame in being who you are no matter what size or side that is and what parts you have to embrace or recuperate to be at your peak best.
