Females with five low-risk lifestyle factors could gain 14.0 years of life expectancy on average, while males could gain 12.2 years. Adherence to these five low-risk lifestyle-related factors could prolong life expectancy at age 50 years by 14.0 and 12.2.

Several variables beyond a healthy lifestyle influence longevity, including exposure to different xenobiotics and stress factors in living and working. A new study shows that health and habits as children and teens affect not only health as adults but lifespan. The life expectancy at age 50 years was estimated to be 29.0 years for women and 25.5 years for men who adopted zero healthy habits.

The study found that at age 65, women with the healthiest lifestyle had an average life expectancy of about 24 years, compared to 21 years for women whose lifestyle was unhealthy. People who maintained five healthy lifestyle factors lived more than a decade longer than those who didn’t maintain any of the five. Men practicing four or five healthy habits at age 50 lived about 31 years free of chronic disease, compared to 24 years among men who practiced none.

Physical activity is one of five healthy lifestyle factors that can lower the risk for several diseases and lengthen life. A very healthy lifestyle increased average life expectancy at age 45 by 7.6 years. Adopting five or more healthy lifestyle behaviors increased life expectancy even for individuals >80 years of age. Adopting eight lifestyle changes, such as eating well and getting a good night’s sleep, could add more than 20 years to life.

These findings are valid and relevant in the research study for all five countries, especially for Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Macedonia, and Montenegro as well.

The direct effect of the level of economic development and material standards of living as measured through the GDP per capita has a strong direct effect to the life expectancy and longevity within these countries. The dominant feature of the estimated model is the straight line of positive influence that runs from economic conditions and the economic development and exerts influence over the life expectancy within these countries. Both lower levels of infant mortality and higher GDP per capita in these five countries have valuable meaning for many aspects including better health and longer life of their population.
