The number of U.S. children dying from gunshot wounds has increased in recent years, and some argue that parents should teach their kids gun safety (safety, not how to shoot). To teach kids about guns, parents should ask if the gun can be locked up, if it isn’t stored safely, and if they have a history of playing with guns. If they see a gun at home or at a friend’s house, teach them to stop what they’re doing and do not touch the gun, even if it looks like a toy.
Public health advocates argue that early training can instill a sense of heritage and a sense of responsibility. Caregivers of children with firsthand experience dealing with gun violence or deaths related to gun violence can apply these concepts, but it is essential to tailor their language and approach. Children are explorers and observers, and if it is hidden, they will find it. Teach your children never to touch guns. Parents can also discuss how a child might ask to go home or call a parent if they become aware of a gun in their presence.
To keep teens and children safer while retaining access to weapons they may need for their job, hobby, or protection, many parents rely on two primary methods: teaching kids gun safety and teaching them how to handle guns. Teaching gun safety at a young age is essential because children are naturally curious. However, Beard says real gun safety education needs to go further and show kids, with their parents’ permission, how to fire a weapon. In a country where guns are very common and may show up at friends’ houses, it seems irresponsible to not teach gun safety.

Why don’t I allow nerf guns?
Toy guns pose risks such as physical injury, mistaking real guns for toy guns, and mistaking toy guns for real guns. Non-powder weapons like BB guns and airsoft guns pose a risk, leading to a push to declassify them as toys. A 2020 study found that children with non-powder weapon-related injuries were predominantly male, lived in the South, non-Hispanic white, and low-income. Injuries included open head, neck, and torso wounds, bruising, traumatic brain injury, blindness, and vision disturbances.
Are nerf guns ok for a 5 year old?
The age requirements for most nerf guns are 6 and up, but the Jolt pistol is strong enough for a pistol. For younger kids, the Maverick is a better choice as they are weaker and more kid-friendly. The Jolt is suitable for 8 and up and is used for the Humans VS Zombies club at college. The author, a 20-year-old, purchased two pairs for her family for Christmas but found the Jolt on clearance for $2. 50. The Jolt is smaller and fits her hand better, but it doesn’t have the same power as the Disrupter, making it less painful. The author plans to buy more nerf guns for her family.
Is it OK for kids to play guns?
Research suggests that pretend gun play is not only normal but also beneficial for children. It helps them manage real-life situations more effectively and control violent impulses. According to child psychologist Sandra Russ, aggressive behavior in pretend play is different from actual aggressive behavior in real life. Unless certain children have difficulty separating play from reality or impulse-control problems, most experts agree that playing with toy guns is acceptable.
Allowing the use of imaginary weapons in children’s play also offers an opportunity for important discussions. Parents should ask their children questions about their pretend gun play and remind them about handling a situation involving a real firearm. While real firearms or weapons in a household must be kept safe and responsible, parents should not get too excited about playing with weapons like lightsabers, phasers, or foam swords. They can add to their children’s playtime weaponry fun without becoming too engrossed in the activity.
Is a Nerf gun safe for kids?
Nerf guns are designed for children aged 8 and up, and should be aimed below the face to avoid eye damage. They should not be aimed directly at the face, especially at close range. Children below this age may not understand or comply with safety measures when using Nerf guns.

I grew up with a single mother in the city, I didn’t know anything about firearms. I remember I went to visit family in the country and I was playing with my cousins and I picked up a rifle on the wall, playing around, acting foolish and my cousins all bolted to tell an adult. They knew, I didn’t know but you can be damn sure my kids know and their kids will know.
