I Shall Redeem What You Pawn By Rejecting The American Way Of Life?

“What You Pawn I Will Redeem” is a short story by Sherman Alexie that explores the contemporary issues affecting American Indian communities due to historical and ongoing displacement and oppression. The story follows Jackson Jackson, a homeless, alcoholic Spokane American Indian man living on the streets of Seattle, who struggles with poverty, homelessness, and alcoholism. The story mirrors the historical relationship between white colonizers and American Indians, as colonizers stole land and destroyed American Indian culture.

In “What You Pawn I Will Redeem”, Jackson embarks on a journey to earn nearly $1,000 to buy back his grandmother’s stolen regalia. This journey symbolizes his struggle for identity and cultural imperialism, which refers to the spread of one dominant culture. Published in 2003 in The New Yorker and later included in Alexie’s short story collection “Ten Little Indians”, the story is a poignant narrative set in the past.

The pawnbroker represents white Americans who sometimes admit their wrongs and feign sympathy while refusing to do anything meaningfully to right them. The story suggests that Jackson spiraled into alcoholism slowly as he lost sense of his identity, disappearing “piece by piece”. As a Native American, Jackson’s journey to redeem his grandmother’s regalia from a pawnshop over 50 years ago is a poignant reflection of the struggles faced by Native American people.

In summary, “What You Pawn I Will Redeem” is a poignant narrative that sheds light on the struggles faced by Native American people, particularly those who are homeless and alcoholic. It highlights the importance of cultural imperialism and the struggle for identity among Native American communities.

  • I only caught someone stealing a package off my porch once. I lived in a small city and was walking back from a store when I saw it happening. The girl left her car window open so I grabbed her keys while she still had her back to me. As she was jogging passed me to the car I asked if the package was hers, obviously knowing it wasn’t. She said it was so I smiled and said, “Oh, ok.” I went inside and waited in the hallway for a few minutes and sure enough, she started banging on the door, screaming. The box she took only had some cheap electronics I bought to fix my laptop so I thought it was a fair trade. I went upstairs and I don’t know what happened after that because my apartment doesn’t face the front of the building. I like to think that she had to pay for a tow and order a new key/keyfab.

  • My moms friend had this issue with people stealing her packages. So she started picking up her dogs poop and putting it in the empty boxes and around the corners of the box. People who are stealing dont sit there and inspect the packages. So they’d have dog poop smeared hands, and a surprise inside 🤣. Her deliveries stopped getting stolen lol

  • I had a problem with people stealing my packages. I actually caught the same person twice and they got away both times with my package. I had called the police before but this time I had plates but the cops actually said that wasn’t enough. So I sent a package to my house with a GPS tracker inside and when the thief stole it, I knew they would, I called the police and told them about the tracker. THAT they said would work if they could get a fix on the tracker. So they in fact did and cornered the rat at their house and guess what they found inside the apartment? My open package with the GPS tracker still inside hidden in the wall of the box along with the decoy contents AND the TWO most recent previous packages they stole from me AND the wrappings and boxes of over 30 packages addressed to about 25 different people in the same neighborhood all having been delivered within the previous few days. The problem had been going on for two months but they recovered over 100 stolen items most without the packages. Most ended up returned to their rightful owner. The police had dozens of reports of stolen packages but nothing to go on since they were all stolen during the day when everyone was at work.

  • I had someone steal a particularly expensive package of mine, so in retaliation, I shat into a plastic bag for about a week before I couldn’t stand it any more, sealed it up and stuck it in a large Amazon box with a biohazard sticker just on the inside, gone in three hours and I’ve never had a package stolen again

  • They don’t need to be stealing random stuff. What they really need is a case of Slim Fast and gym membership. I don’t actively seek out these porch pirate articles but when they do show up in my feed they’re very consistent ~ the men are pencil thin and agile but the women tend to be the size of a couch and lumber away one waddle at a time. Edit: In retrospect, some aren’t completely out of shape. Some look like meth addicts, as some are seen in this particular article. Don’t do drugs, kids.

  • I never understood why in some countries the delivery services are allowed to just leave your package outside the doors for anyone to take it.. In my country they will just call you when they’re 5 minutes away from your house, or if they are infront of it, to go out and collect it. If you don’t answer their call, they’ll either leave with the package and deliver it the next day, or just leave it in their store in your city. (If there is one)

  • I’m really astonished the system hasn’t been changed yet. In Euope it’s not possible to steal packages because the system makes it impossible. It’s a little more hassle, to be sure, but if you aren’t home, you can let the delivery service know where to drop your parcel. A neighbour, a drop-off-point, a self-service-pick-up-point, … you get notified when your parcels arrived and are ready to be picked up (or the name of the neighbour who signed for the parcels). It’s very rare that parcels go missing, because porch pirates don’t even get a chance.

  • More victims need to chase them down and pepper spray them so they think before they steal in the future. I caught a serial thief breaking into cars and local businesses(during Covid lockdown when they released a bunch of prisoners) and yelled at him to leave the neighborhood and never come back. He cussed me out and had no shame in his game. So I ended up dousing him several times(and myself in the fight). It really hurts! Then the car owner of his latest attempt came out to deal with his alarm and thought I was with him. So I told him I just pepper sprayed him and offered to do it again. He smiled and accepted my offer. So we went at it again. The guy thanked me and then proceeded to beat the guy up as I left. The homeless thief was back the next day but wasn’t checking doors anymore. Consequences(in Clint Eastwood voice).

  • How is it even normal, that packages get stacked outside for everyone to grab?! this is insane! here in germany, if no one is home, you get a little slip into your postbox to pick your package up at a location (like a kiosk nearby, or a packet station) … and there you have to have the slip & your ID to prove its your package to get it and sign it out!

  • I used to put my Cats nasty litter in a box and package it up in a nice fancy box and made sure that the jackasses had to put in a little work to open the box and get inside. I made sure that what was inside was pretty ripe and it didn’t stink until first opened. I told my neighbors just let them take it if they see anyone since my packages goes to a PO-BOX. I had about half dozen took and after a few months it all stopped, no one would steal any boxes any more.

  • This is 2022. Everybody out there has some sort of security camera. These thieves have to know that they’re getting recorded somewhere, somehow. But I really don’t understand why they would risk jail to steal a box if you don’t know wtf is in it! For all they know, it could be hamster vitamins or hemorrhoid wipes. Porch Pirates took two boxes off my neighbor’s porch, backed into a parked car, and hit three mailboxes trying to get out of the neighborhood. But my neighbor just laughed. He said “all they got was adult diapers. Size extra large”. He was recorded on four different security cameras. And he caught more trouble for the damage ($3,500) he caused getting away than for actually stealing the packages.

  • What mindset does somebody have that they think its a perfectly legitimate thing in the broadest of daylight in a suburban area with windows everywhere and people about and think, I’ll walk to the front door and take this and nobody will see? Not even the cover of darkness guarantees a clean getaway, to say nothing of the immoral act of stealing.

  • Here in France the delivery guy knocks on your door and have you sign before delivering your package (and if your not at home you have the option to have it deposited at a neighbor or to the nearest pick and collect station available or even re schedule to a better time) It’s utterly stupid to leave your goods in the open like that

  • this actually happened to me once. i moved and the locations didn’t change to my new address so the new owners got them and left them out and told us to come pick ‘em up. when we did they weren’t there. we figured the mail man took them but he claimed he didn’t. we never even knew what was in there tho

  • The balls and entitlement people have out there it’s truly insane, and I seriously believe a lot of it has to do with how disconnected from society people are-i.e. people don’t interact with others and especially strangers anywhere near to the extent we used to, thus these people literally see themselves as the main character in a movie, the protagonist in a article game, and everybody else are just background characters or NPC’s who don’t matter or exist once you go home . . I’m a FedEx driver at the moment, have been for over a year, the area I deliver in is nice and fairly small knit so this kind of thing is virtually unheard of, all of my regular stops I know a lot of the customers by face and name and vice versa-one day I go to deliver this Samsung sound bar and I put on their porch behind their furniture, upon coming back around to leave the neighborhood I see a person I know for a fact didn’t live at this address (cause there’s only an elderly man and his wife that live there) just waltz up on their porch and takes it, f*cking Ring door bell camera and all nonetheless. I pull over and jump out as they’re nonchalantly walking away with a giant soundbar they could barely carry, first they’re ‘just taking their packages since they’re on vacation,’ then I remind them they were just here yesterday and very much expecting me to deliver the rest of their stuff, I told them they had two options; accept the fact your bich ass just got caught cold and to give me the package, or I’m taking it from him and the cops are gonna figure the rest out.

  • It seems very strange to me that in the United States (i pressume is the US, dont know actually) delivery companies leave your packages at your door, regardless of whether someone receives them or not. In my country, when no one is home, the delivery man takes the package and returns the next day, or leaves a note for you to go pick it up at the warehouse. I find it quite irresponsible and even stupid to just leave the package and walk away, considering that it seems to be very common for someone to steal them.

  • Best thing I did was buy a ring cam. I caught the contractors in my neighborhood stealing my electricity, night stalkers scoping out the neighborhood, and my neighbor running over my sewer cleanout line. Luckily, she didn’t crush it. Needless to say, the contractors stealing my electricity paid for my ring cam then some.

  • I’m sorry 😂 the guy who came out with 🔫 was the best and most effective way to handle porch pirates . These asshats are getting to comfortable walking up to peoples houses and grabbing these boxes like they belong to them. Not to mention Amazon has a nasty habit these days of sending items not packaged . So there will literally be an unboxed item out in the open on your front door. Sooo that’s not helping the situation . Just sayin.

  • I remember seeing a woman post how her second hand premature baby clothes she ordered had been stolen off her porch… the audacity… heart breaking… even if I got a notification it got delivered down the block when I got to their house I’d knock talk and explain and not just take it or leave a sticky note explaining… like idk… I’ve gotten mail to the wrong address and delivered it or left a note for the mail man to take it where it should go

  • Now Amazon has these central location places near neighborhoods to pick up your packages if you are concerned about porch pirates. You get a code to unlock the specific door that holds your package as different doors hold packages of different sizes. Pretty smart as they generally tend to be located in pretty convenient locations that you can stop by on your way home.

  • On principle I have to agree with the Karen @2:04 . There is nothing more obnoxious and selfish than a neighbor allowing their brat to scream nonstop. If the noise infiltrates my home, then that’s a problem. I think in that case, both mother and child need to be put in the hospital. Being a good neighbor means respect for ALL neighbors. Glad you love your little brat, but the fact of the matter is that we don’t.

  • What’s ridiculous in this country though is that if they didn’t actually steal it “meaning they didn’t get away with it” and they just picked it up and were attempting to get away, the cops do nothing. Because the actual crime wasn’t committed. Absolutely fucking stupid. I know this because this happened to me. Caught the chick stealing it. Held her there till the cops came and they said they couldn’t do anything because she didn’t leave the property with it. I said she still came onto my property, picked up my items and attempted to leave. But apparently since she didn’t get away they can’t do shit. And yet it’s a crime for us to just handle these thieves ourself? FOH.

  • Can you shute someone that you catch that will not release your packages* and/or that tries to escape before the cops get there?! *Some people are so brazen that they will try to run away with your packages at gunnpoint, figuring that you will not shute them. Call it a schtick that they’ve gotten away with before…

  • I kind of hate people who let their kids be that loud too. I get it’s day time but it really does happen through the night as well. Then they answer like this, I felt the white girls anger. When I knocked on my upstairs neighbors door & politely asked them if it was even possible for her to keep her kids down, she had the same snarky response & slammed the door in my face. From that point on, I made as much noise as possible. Long story short, they both got the police called on them for child abuse because you’d often hear the kids yelling & shrieking, the following week, we had no more upstairs neighbors.
