To motivate yourself to do homework, create a routine, break assignments into smaller tasks, find an accountability partner, and share progress with someone who cares. Use positive reinforcement by rewarding yourself after completing each task and reminding yourself of your goals.
To overcome procrastination, cultivate a belief in yourself, harness your inner potential, and coax yourself into action. Three expert tips for motivating yourself to do homework include using incremental incentives, setting clear, achievable goals, creating a distraction-free study space, and establishing a regular routine. Use a timer for focused work sessions, reward yourself after completing tasks, and maintain a positive attitude.
If you notice that you’ve started daydreaming or thinking about other things, don’t beat yourself up. Gently turn your attention back to your work.
Developing a strategy is the first stage to stay motivated with your homework. Start by listing all your assignments and making a list of what needs to be done. Prioritize tasks based on deadlines and importance. Break down larger tasks into smaller ones.
To stay motivated, set small goals, stay organized, take breaks, reward yourself, and get help when needed. Stay positive by using the (10+2)*5 technique and incorporating exercise into your routine.
Decide on a reward to give yourself after completing a task, such as a 5 minute video after finishing a reading assignment. Remember your “why” and set clear goals. Set up a study plan and avoid rewarding yourself. Some people suggest using a timer method to set specific times for completing homework. Acknowledge your resistance and difficult feelings with motivation, do not run away, and don’t blame yourself for procrastinating.

Today I’m going to show you how to trick yourself into doing anything. This is a method that you can use to motivate yourself …
Why do I have no motivation to do my homework?
To boost motivation, it’s essential to organize your workspace. Take fifteen minutes to tidy up your desk, computer, and mind, and organize your assignments by restacking loose papers, finding folders, and displaying motivational quotes. Add elements of your favorite color to make your workspace feel more personal. Create a calendar on your device or planner to help prioritize school deadlines and schedule.
Eliminate distractions like social media while working on your schoolwork, using anti-distraction apps to manage time and block access when needed. Avoid multitasking and focus on completing your work, as it will make it feel more relaxing to look at completed tasks. This will help you feel more focused and motivated.

To survive and enjoy the writing process, avoid procrastination by getting on with the task, delegating it, considering it as an opportunity, breaking it up, looking for signs of life, rewarding yourself, and walking away when done. Everyone has had to tackle “the thing we don’t want to write”, whether it’s a recommendation for someone we don’t know well, a boring financial report or analysis, a press release that won’t turn into a story, or a speech that the speaker and audience are both dreading. What do I do if I have no homework?
An elementary school teacher in Southern California, who was previously pro-homework, has discovered that there are 250+ fun activities for kids to try instead of homework. These activities include building a robot, riding a bike, planting a garden, making a compost pile/bin, creating a water catch basin, harvesting, and sharing the harvest with those in need. The teacher believes that by allowing homework, students can develop responsibility and good study habits, which can lead to higher academic achievement.
The author’s brother, who also works as a teacher, also made homework optional, which both students and parents enjoyed. The teacher believes that giving no homework can provide even more beneficial experiences for students.

How long is too long to do homework?
It is recommended that families allocate 10 minutes per grade level per night to homework, with second-graders completing 20 minutes and sixth-graders an hour. If this seems unfeasible, it would be beneficial to consider the factors that contribute to an extended homework duration, such as the child’s ability to maintain focus on their homework and whether they are consistently attentive to their homework throughout the night.

Procrastination on homework is often due to personal and situational factors, such as exhaustion and anxiety, which outweigh self-control and motivation. These factors include fear and perfectionism, as well as distractions and unclear instructions. Self-control is often relied upon to complete homework on time, but when these issues interfere with or oppose self-control and motivation, procrastination can occur. The balance between these factors may shift in favor of the procrastinator, or it may be too late.

📹 How To Stay Motivated – The Locus Rule
A lot of people ask me questions about how to stay/be/get motivated. Today I’ll tell you about a very interesting study on motivation …
I’m a big supporter of people doing what works fir them. I’m not sure people need to “trick” themselves into doing something, rather train themselves to engage in more positive self-talk and develop a more optimistic “explanatory style” about life events. Sometimes, positive affirmations, visualizations, even role plays are helpful. Cognitive-behavioral techniques are excellent and they are what should be made in to a habit. Yes, some specific skills may be necessary if they are lacking (assertiveness, body language, interview skills, flirting) but most people don’t need to learn that many social skills. Changing how we think is really the most important habit we need to develop.
This is amazing! perusal this article made me realize that I have some routine too. I always set a ruler, two pens and a correction pen before I take exams (even though I only use one pen the entire exam). This routine always makes me less nervous, and sets me up for the test. I can sure say it’s helpful for me. Cool article, too XD
I think it’s not something that works “no matter what”, but what you do before work or before anything that takes intense focus, can definitely affect how well you both feel and perform when doing it. But I also have times I simply can not get into a focused state (usually that’s after work when I’m already tired). We still all have our limits.
This is why seperating “work space” and “home” is very important. I struggled a lot with getting out of bed or even eating because I used to do everything in my room, especially my bed. I would sleep, do work, eat and play on my bed all day long that it sort of became everything. You have to seperate your life into sections, kind of like games, you can’t mine coal unless you’re in a cave and you can’t get wood unless you’re in a forest. So you can’t sleep unless it’s you’re in your bedroom, you can’t eat unless it’s in the kitchen. Separate your work place from your home space. Just a corner in your room JUST for you to do work and focus, it should also be a place that you always walk by that will really reinforce the idea of “might as well do work” instead of ignoring it all together to avoid work.
I noticed to trick myself to workout—because I workout at home—I would change to gym clothes and athletic shoes and listen to some music. It always works for me. Also I remember the 3,2,1 method and I thought this article was gonna be a revised version of it. I’m glad it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while now, just never noticed it.
I was close to figuring something like this out once. I was very stressed and low on motivation, and thought: “Okay, I know I need to do this and that, but let’s not stress myself for now, and just cook a proper meal for once” It worked, and I tried replicating this experience, but it didn’t work that well.
I’m surprised at the fact that in other countries like America, people calmly communicate with each other, even if they don’t know each other. In Russia, if you talk to a stranger, you will be considered mentally ill, because we usually do not talk to strangers. We only talk to strangers when we need to get directions, or when we need some help, other cases are considered inappropriate.
now that i realize this, i do art and sometime soon wanna start animating if not just post art on my yt, but lately ive had such a bad burnout, i forced myself everyday to atleast do one drawing piece but lately i cant even pick up my apple pencil nor get it out of its pocket i looked back to when i was so motivated in art and drew alot and actually enjoyed it and never forced myself, i had a routine every morning during that time when i felt better, wake up early immediately no checking devices and just jump out of bed, take my dog out on a long walk on a sunny morning, then have some hot healthy tea, and just that whole era of me doing that i felt so much happier and motivated to do stuff, now i wake up at 1pm and takes me 20 minutes to lift my body up, and even after that, i dont go outside or anything, (sometimes i will to grab mail)then i just start off my day by eating leftovers or just something unhealthy, i dont know 100% if that affected my motivation in art, but overall it just made me feel better i dont rlly attend on anyone reading this i kinda just made this for myself xD
So you really lived the American dream! Dude this is so amazing! Some time ago I had a conversation in school with a teacher and a bunch of pupils and we ( Germans) discussed (USA was our topic) wether the American dream is still “alive” or not. I was really defending it and truly believed it does exist but most of the others including the teacher disagreed. Germans have a very fixed mindset about almost everything, and I just love the American approach to life! I want to go to California when I can afford it and I want to live the American dream too! You are very inspiring!
I believe I’ve heard of this before with the concept of just “if you just do one small chore then you’ll feel motivated to do more” and I was like “ugh, that’s not as effective as you think it is,” but when you put into perspective that this “small chore” can be any sort of small ritual that you find interest in, you suddenly have a much better tasting recipe for success, or at least the motivation to be successful. I’ve always liked listening to music for some motivation and going for walks. Maybe that can be my thing.
I suffer from major procrastination and just recently i’ve over come that to certain extents, even if something feels like it’s a mile or a dream away if you want something you have to chase it, essentially you get a feeling of instant short term motivation of what could happen if you started studying, training, etc and saying to yourself i’m not going to start or do this thing in 5 minutes not 10 seconds or after this, but right now even if youa re in the middle of something and you commit this other thing immediately you’ll always be motivated and once you have done this and after you’ve learnt something or feel impressed you did this no matter how big or small that progress was it drives you to do the exct same thing the next day, and ofcourse not blaming your own learning and life on external distractions like the rain or a bad day, etc. And if you don’t enjoy something but there is a brighter future or light ahead; it can motivate you to endure through the task at hand. Ofcourse rewards are motivating but when that material value isn’t an option or avalible there has to be another outlet and that is to make a change before a change is made to you.
I’ve been a little lazy about cooking for myself this school year. But I think I found my “showtime” cue. This morning, I was so tired and I could barely get up. However, when I took that first step of just bringing the ingredients out I’m instantly in the zone. Even more so when I open up a recipe, despite knowing all the steps already.
I kind of have this for school but it’s not just one outfit. If I’m feeling self conscious or anxious I wear something that makes me look like a snack and it gives me this ballsy but mature attitude. I have been wearing the same combination of clothes during the summer: some kind of shorts, a fitted shirt or crop top, and these tights that were woven into patterns. Now time to get my fall/winter showtime together..
This is so true! You know, there is a huge debate between bosses giving their workers options to work between home or the office because some people work better in different environments. And this could apply to anybody, your surroundings can effect you a lot more than you’d think. And that’s the thing, you need to get out of your comport zone. Some people associate work places with productivity and comportable places with rest, and that’s completely normal! You cant do work in your comport zone because you’d get too comportable and do no work in the end, this could also work the other way around. It personally happens to me all the time. All you got to do is get a change of scenery since you physiologically work better under certain conditions. Just like being a night owl or a morning bird, you can’t really change this and it’s just something you’d have to accommodate. Homework could even disrupt this balance for certain people and ruin their days. Now if you’d excuse me, i need to get back to crying over my un-finished essay because its 3:00am and i need to wake back up in 3 hours.
Hello improvement pill! I just love your website, it is so informative and so helpful. But I feel like if everything I do has no meaning at all, I have no forces, motivation, reason, purpose, wish, I don’t feel like doing anything anymore, like if my existence is useless and meaningless… I don’t even know if being alive is the right direction (0.0 self esteem). I’m still 13 and still on college and learning to programm by myself (it’s so hard), I’m Brazilian and schools here sux, so much that I would prefer not to go. I learned english by myself too. А я учу русский (And I’m learning Russian) Thank you ;0
humans are creatures of habit, training and repeating a “ritual” like that definitely does work! not only that but bring human is almost like being a small logical rider on top of an emotional elephant, you can make decisions but when that elephant takes over you have little to no control, so being able to control your emotional and mental state like this is extraordinarily effective and can help you preform at your best!
I needed this, been perusal your articles because I’m having the same problem, overworked then burnt out, quit my job, now I’m studying for a licensure exam. However, I’m having a hard time actually studying. There’s a lot of distractions and I try to make a “study area” and only using it for studying. But my biggest problem is /when/ I study because I just can’t get into the mood of it. So I will try this, I really think self-discipline is the best motivation, kind of.
Im reviewing for my board exam currently and notice that I applied this unconciously. Since the pandemic and the start of online class, I rarely wake up early, in contrast to my old routine when there’s still a face to face classes I always wake up early and immediately take a bath then go to school.. I started doing that now that im preparing for board exam, waking up early in the morning and taking a bath I notice I feel much more motivated to study for many hours, it really helped me self study and im slowly building that routine, hope I will pass and even top the board exam.
Honestly for me the biggest problem is I spend my entire day procrastinating and then when its 3am I am suddenly full of motivation, but need to sleep of course. Then I wake up again, completely miserable, and repeat the cycle. I have never done anything big my entire life, I have always procrastinated. It is incredibly hard for me to do absolutely anything.
A weird thing I’d do since younger childhood: When I was going to meet someone I hadn’t seen in a while or I was just nervous to meet, I’d stop at a certain spot as I was walking there and just cherish every single second I had before I had to face the situation. I pretended that I was just in my own world with nobody around me and I’d force a massive smile on purpose to kind of squeeze out the embarrassed face I might make. If I knew something slightly stressful was going to happen in the next 30 seconds (Going in late to school etc.) then I’d just sit in that one spot for 30 seconds and cherish every single millisecond of that 30 seconds I had, as if time had stopped. I don’t know if it helped but it felt like it did.
Do your preparation for whatever it is you need to do, and when the moment is there actually say “Showtime!” (in your head if you’re in public, hehe). Saying “Showtime!” or a similar phrase puts you in a performance state. Add a physical gesture for more effect. (Not a summary of the article, but what I use. )
I live in the American Garden Buildings on West Eighty-First Street, on the eleventh floor. My name is Patrick Bateman. I am twenty-seven years old. I believe in taking care of myself, in a balanced diet, in a rigorous exercise routine. In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I’ll put on an ice pack while doing my stomach crunches. I can do a thousand now. After I remove the icepack, I use a deep pore-cleanser lotion. In the shower, I use a water-activated gel cleanser, then a honey-almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb mint facial masque which I leave on for ten minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after-shave lotion with little or no alcohol because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm, followed by a final moisturizing “protective” lotion… There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me, only an entity, something illusory, and though I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping you and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable: I simply am not there.
I dream of being a full time artist and i’m making a comic right now, but i still have to work and study so i come home very tired everyday. I have this simple routine of 30 minutes of resting, showering and eating to recover the energy and the i can sit and draw for 4 to 5 hours. Also, whatever i finish some of the 3 steps of each chapter (skecth, lineart and color) i buy myself some nice food and rest for full day.
Oh, that explains why I am so productive in my granny’s house or school.. Wait..its been a long time since I worked out, I always did when I got anxiety on the night.. Maybe that’s why I get anxiety every day? And maybe that’s why when I go to school by foot I get less anxious.. Oh wow, this is really an eye opener.. Thanks
A simple thing that works for lots of people is putting on your shoes. When you put on your shoes, especially if you’re school age and college age, it signifies to your brain that it’s time to get productive cause when you put on your shoes it usually means you’re going somewhere to get something done.
I have an opposite trick! I’m very forgetful. I miss small details constantly, I leave important things at my house, I go into Target and forget to buy what I got in there for. But I’m also a perfectionist; I feel genuine shame when admitting I was wrong or I didn’t do something correctly, even about the smallest things. So, when correcting my behavior, right before doing it, I say out loud to myself “Take _____.” Usually, I only need a Take Two, sometimes a Take Three. It helps because it reminds me “the show must go on,” but also that flubs are part of life. The editor (my own retrospection) can cut my takes into a montage, as long as I get the job done. It can also work with social situations if you make your “audience” part of the joke. They’re winging this “life” thing as much as you are. A simple “that’s not what I meant to say. Let’s try that one again. Take Two:” and it can actually build trust with that person because it makes them think you’re being vulnerable with them, even if you don’t think you are.
I found out about that effect working in kitchens. Most of the time wearing an apron was all times, because being a deli we worked with the customers and their food. Anytime I didn’t have that apron on I didn’t feel like I was in work, and I couldn’t focus. I may have to develop my own work uniform for life, as my desired profession has been writting and art. Its weird, but awesome at the same time that we’ve learned about it.
I’ve been thinking about the power of our mind lately to improve my playing at soccer. what i can do combining my senses, physics, gravity, weight, angles, time… i realized that i can gather all this information, but the best way to use it is to simply feeling. like… really letting your mind feel most of the time, when we are doing something, we are doing it twice. or in double, on top of each other in our mind, because we are thinking of doing it, and reproducing fast, thats not the same as naturaly feel and do it, imagine how fast you can move away of something you got scare of. but the point is that when I simply thought CLEARLY about everything around me, which i mean, the size of the field, the mass and movement of every player, i responded right away to what I needed to do in the situation. just like when your brain knows something is wrong and respond to it. so… the more we really give information to our brain about the situation and really acknoledge it, your instincts do the rest, your brain work alone for you to do the right thing. I believe that anxiety is simply the horrible feeling of forgeting what to do by letting your instincts in the dark. beause we think too much instead of feel
My ritual is definitely listening to music that gets me pumped. Hell, there was a time that I would go out every night and lift weights to “The Only Thing They Fear Is You”, even going as far as timing my lifting and what muscles I was using to the beat changes in the song. It’s neat, cause I’ve pretty much trained my adrenal gland to activate whenever I hear it.
i see this right after my first concert in school, i totally fucked up songs (i played guitar and i only play for 1 year) great vocalist covered me up and audience didn’t notice luckily. it was all because of stress, i was so hot after and before that, my temperature went to 38°C sitting stressed in leather jacket and practicing hearing people who preformed before us.
For me when I go to work, to prep myself for work I shower put on some nice cologne anti perspirant and wear decent fitting clothes. I dont actually wear these clothes during work because we have our own uniform, but the act of preparing and getting ready primes my brain for work. I have to be presentable if I’m going to be out of the house, so I have to get ready so that I’m ready for the challenges of the day. I’ve noticed a substantial dip i my motivation when I’m not working likely because of this reason. I dont have to get dressed, or shower because no one will see me. As a result my motivation drops and I dont feel like I have to do anything.
Watching this I realized that I already have a ritual Some months ago I had no motivation at all to go to work (long story short, I have no option but to work there and I hate It. I only have to work there for 3 months or so before I can look for other job positions, though) So I started to put on make up while listening to my favorite songs everyday before leaving, and there It was, Showtime effect Plus, I felt cute and my self steem improved a LOT
Wtf i never realize this was trick i always do this for back then, example whenever i put my glasses on i try to think myself gaining superpower knowledge comming from those glasses then i will start to work and study for several hours and sometimes when im nervous i will try to jump as high as i could then goes to what im doing, damnit i totally forgot thas i was doing this back then, now its time to do it again thanks improvement pill for reminding me my gratest gratitute is all yours.
i had a talisman, it was a bone plush. Everytime I slept with it, I would instantly wake up in the morning energized, dressing up and be ready to do whatever I had to do. Sadly I lost it, and with it this “ability”. I don’t know why it happened but rituals are really working. Guess I will have to find another one.
I actually was doing this before already, a little routine of washing myself and dressing up to motivate me to do stuff. Because I won’t do anything when I am not clean, it’s simply impossible also I have to clean my room before I learn for school it’s to clear my mind from any unnecessary thoughts and problems to concentrate on my work.
thanks for the seriousness. the problem i’m having now, which may or may not be new, is lifting myself from activity level 0. i’m doing nothing, and i’ve recently been extremely active, like personal high score active. so this is a rut, and i’m confused that i’m even here. how could i sink so low after such a high level? i’m gonna figure this out, for me and everyone i care about, for all the youtubers and everyone who ends up where i’m at. this is ridiculous and i’m gonna figure out how to prevent it, and how to get out of it.
I was doing this from quite a time but i didn’t know it’s a some kind of trick, while studying i start what people called “pomodoro”, i study for 30 minutes total concentration and take 5 minutes break then again study for 30 minutes taking 5 minutes break again, i do like 5 continuous cycle at once, so for me the trigger is the when my 5 minutes break ends and i feel an urge to focus on my studies. Yesterday my phone got damaged so i thought of studying without pomodoro and i felt quite unmotivated because my brain is used to act with pomodoro. You can try yourself
This is just my opinion guys, but I believe if you DO develop a “ritual” before a specific activity you wanna do and fail to do that “ritual” for some extraneous reason, it could possibly lead to some drawbacks to yourself like being anxious all throughout the activity. Since you “tricked” your mind to believe that doing this “ritual” will make your activity more successful, not doing the “ritual” will also cause it to think you will fail. Realistically speaking, sometimes we don’t have the opportunity to do the “ritual.” What are your opinions on this guys?
Your anegdoth about going out to starbucks it’s kinda simillar to that writer who couldn’t work at home so every day he took a walk with his bag, pretending that he’s going to the office, and then simply getting back to the house and start writing. But what i think it’s not because he acutally needed this feeling of enviroment change, but because he needed a work-starting-habit
