What makes the goth aesthetic?

The Goth subculture, originating from the post-punk music scene, is known for its dark fashion aesthetic and love for the occult. However, not all Goths wear black, as cybergoths wear neon colors. Despite their name, the Goth subculture is not feared, as they are passionate about the arts and culture and seek spiritual experiences. The Gothic aesthetic has influenced various aspects of history, politics, and culture, making it a valuable resource for libraries.

Librarians can use books, journals, and websites to choose works for fiction or pop culture collections. Additionally, watching videos on YouTube or listening to music on internet music apps can help choose the right audiovisual material.

The authors of nonfiction collections should represent the varying opinions and personal experiences of authors on topics such as ancient history, the Goth aesthetic, and the Gothic subculture. While most books are scholarly and suitable for academic libraries, introductory and pop culture-related works would be suitable for both public and academic libraries. As the Goth music and art scene and the Goth subculture are contemporary, scholarly research on these topics is still evolving.

Traditional goth, or trad goth, reflects the classic and original aesthetics of Goth from the 1980s, with black clothing, creepers, winklepickers, and backcombed hair. The Batcave club in the UK also influenced the fashion with their attire, influencing the aesthetic over the decades into the 2010s.

Victorian goth is a modern fashion movement that interprets and redefines aspects of Victorian Era fashion, such as big dresses and elegant hair. Early inspiration for this movement came from medieval settings used by Edgar Allan Poe and late-Victorian examples in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The influence of these subcultures on modern gothic fashion continues to influence the genre today.

Adrian Forte, who has loved music since high school, shares that he has always been a proto-Goth who never bloomed, as he didn’t know where to go or who to meet. • But do you actually make any money from it ? I have plenty of professionally done gothic photoshoots, just as a hobby, and lots of professional photographs I’ve taken of graveyards, nature etc. but does any of this get monetised eventually or must we meet extra requirements? Because I’m not interested in creating an account purely to be social…. But I’d put in the effort if it would make some revenue

  • Excellent advice. I especially agree with the problematic part. Would also like to add – I hate people who start moralising and telling the audience what to buy, not to buy, judging brands, people etc. I’m so sick of those. Unfollow all the time now. One was especially painful cos I really loved the content but not only did she start preaching to people, then she started calling people who unfollowed trash. Like, sorry, honey, but not all of us are from the same culture and background etc so not all of us have to subscribe to everything you say or else. Seems like there’s a whole epidemic of those in the UK. I wanted to comment about that on that article, but remembered how narrowminded these people can be so decided to just walk away. Thank you so much for NOT doing that. We need more of people who don’t tell others how to feel. We come here to rest from work, life and various stresses we have, not to be preached at.
