How To Embellish A Denim Jacket With Sequins?

This tutorial demonstrates how to add sequins to a denim jacket without sewing, providing a step-by-step guide on how to achieve a glamorous makeover. The tutorial includes a step-by-step guide on how to cut and glue rhinestone trim to the jacket, as well as various ways to sew on sequins to fabric.

To create the sequin jacket, measure and cut the rhinestone trim to your desired length, leaving a ¼” to ½” seam allowance before attaching the piecework to the jacket. If you’re sewing decorative shapes with sequins, use an erasable fabric marker to draw the shapes on the denim and use the lines as a guide.

Evangeline Prince shares her experience of hand stitching every single sequin onto limited edition jackets to add a pop of sparkle to a classic style. She applies Fabri-Tac Stretch®️ to the back of each sequin patch and attaches them directly to the jacket. To ensure the wings are ironed on, first place them on the back of the jacket using online images of similar projects as a guide.

In summary, this tutorial provides a step-by-step guide on how to add sequins to a denim jacket, allowing you to elevate it into a statement piece and stand out from the crowd. The tutorial also includes instructions on how to cut the sleeves off of the jacket just below the shoulder seam and use an erasable fabric marker to draw decorative shapes with sequins.

  • Orly, I am so excited to make this one! I purchased a jean vest last year at a consignment shop and just never have figured out the best way to wear it and now you’ve given me the perfect solution ❤️ I’m thinking I may need some more jean jackets/vests to try some other add on options, like maybe a sweatshirt sleeve and a hoodie too.

  • New subscriber here! I’ve binged a bunch of your articles since finding your website. The best thing about your articles is even if the thing you’re making isnt my style, I still learn techniques I can apply to other projects. You make DIYing clothing seem so simple! I just started sewing, and you’ve definitely inspired me to keep it up!

  • I discovered your website this week and love all of your clothing DIY articles! I’m a new subscriber and I already have plans to make a few pieces from your articles. I also appreciate how you get right to the DIY. There are quite a few youtubers that have long intros that ramble on. So it’s a breath of fresh air to see how deliberately you use your time in your articles. 💜

  • 🤗rly darling… You look fantastic in your ‘bomber jacket’ style 🤩. However, I must admit as straight forward as your tutorial was… My brain is trying to find an even simpler way… I’m thinking I’ll cover an existing sleeve… making design/style adjustments in my head prior to moving forward… You’ve got my creative juices flowing 😄

  • I originally saw this jacket in your “reviewing my DIY‘s” article and I cannot describe to you my facial expression or my thoughts when I first saw this. I need to make something just like it! the type of the sequin fabric being not technically sequins more like shiny iridescent confetti, the color, the fact that it’s the matte black with the shiny black. I love it! I just love it! and I don’t know how to actually describe that. it’s 1 million times better than your reference picture/ inspiration pic whatever you wanna call it, the denim with the silver I just didn’t like it but this- I just I need this, I need to make this. (Also yeah I recently subscribed)

  • I love it as usual #DesignerQueen, could you please make a article for a no sew harm pant with pockets look? I didn’t have a singing machine yet. Also, what kind of seeing machine would you should for a beginner making clothes? Thank you sharing you creativity and knowledge with us your viewer’s. #WeLoveYou❤️❤️😘😘

  • Hey Orly, Love this jacket – and I would like to give it a try. Could you please let me know how large the sequins are? I have to order them online since I can’t find hardly any sequins in my local stores. I would like to get them in the same size as you have them… ☺️ 9 mm? 18 mm? Thanks for the inspiration 🤩🤩🤩

  • Soooo I watched the article of the DIY of things you did and still wear. Fell in love with the jacket idea so came here. Here’s the deal, though. Since animal print is sooooo in right now, I’m using animal print from a size 4 skirt I got from goodwill. Jacket was $6 from goodwill. Whoohoo!! Will keep you posted 😍

  • Love love love this DIY!!!! I decided to give this a try, and I’ve barely begun and I already have an issue. Hopefully someone can help me out. I am over 6 feet tall and have very long arms. The fabric I bought is not long enough for me to cut 2 sleeves out along the fold. Even when I add the cuff of the jacket I am a good 2-3 inches short. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

  • Just joined your website. You are the best in town…and frankly… out of-town too! Orly, I just love those free hand butterflies so gorgeous. I would love to see you do more detailed designs such as this being able to use different designs on pocket books, book bags. Hats, shoes and clothing. Buying readymade items such as these could cost a fortune but buying the materials will allow me (us) to make more than one at a time. Thanking you in advance🌲🌲🌲

  • Sewing tip on this project. Get a walking foot and a denim sewing needle that will make it so much easier to sew thick layers together. I’m a quilter we use a walking foot when doing the machine quilting it’s a much bigger foot and can handle sewing through three layers for a quilt. It is tricky to put on. I always do it wrong first. But worth the time to change out the foot. I had some stretch fabric boots that were too tall (I’m 5 feet tall). I cut of the extra material used a walking foot, zag zig stitch so the boot can still stretch and jeans sewing needle. Worked like a charm. This is an awesome project. I love now creative you are.

  • Can you do DIY dress shirt revamp? I saw this brief DIY where they removed a portion of the back panel and inserted different fabrics such as lace or other more jazzed up fabrics. The DIY I saw they rushed through it and it didn’t look that clean. I’d love to see your take on it so I can see it done right so I can wear them to work and still look professional .

  • This is totally a look. I thrifted a sequin sweater top, that I thought only needed to be mended in the shoulder seam and once I finished I hand washed it and it totally started dissolving. I am soo disappointed because it was a really nice looking expensive sweater. I have not thrown it away yet, I going to look and see if there some way to save the sequins. Like always you totally made a gorgeous piece and imagine if these sleeves was done to a blazer. Another article for my save file. Thanks for sharing and blessing to you in the days to come.

  • Hi orly, I just started perusal your articles when I was interested in making my own sequin jacket — they go for $40+ online!! 😨 And I just wanted to say, you are an amazing inspiration! Thank you for sharing your sewing and sequin knowledge with us. I’m a complete novice, I don’t even have any fabrics or a sewing machine, could you tell me where I can purchase some good, non expensive sequin fabrics like you use?

  • new sub. love love love your website. thanks to you ive started on my mirror jacket project. realizing now that the cost of the mirrors is gonna hit around $80 to finish the project…could have bought another fast fashion jacket, but thats not the point right haha. sooo tempted to try this sequin project too, but I think I might do it on pants or my kilt 😉

  • New(ish) subscriber! I love your website, even though I could never pull off half the stuff you make. But it gives me great ideas for my own refashions and DIYs, and I especially love that you seem like a goofball, which makes you more accessible to my plus-size, middle-aged, tired mama self. Also, I definitely need to make me something with sequins, and SOON!

  • I just subscribed! I like your style! I wish you can give me a tip on what kind of sewing machine should I purchase becoz some of them seemed a little too complicated for my purpose 🤦‍♀️ I started sewing when I was 7 yrs old, using an old style with pedal, perusal grandma make me clothes. But sewing machines now are too modern and Ive not used one in many years. I can use your advice. ❤️🥰

  • Is there a way for me to send you pictures of this pleated color block skirt??…I saw it on the Netflix series Raising Dion and I fell in love with it and can not find it online to purchase…I would love to see if you have a creative way to making it. There was also this denim and pearl jacket on the show that I saw but I think I make that but if you did a tutorial on that too I would definitely watch! 😊😊

  • Thanks so much Orly! I’ve been playing more and more with my sewing machine and trying new things. I made my daughter’s entire costume for Halloween this year and have started making skirts for her as well as things for the holidays for decor! Your articles have been so helpful and inspiring! Love the way this jacket came out. Looks great!
