DO’S AND DON’TS OF WEARING FLAT SHOES | HOW TO STYLE AND WHAT TO WEAR THEM WITH I’m sharing do’s and don’ts …
Why can’t some people wear flat shoes?
Flat shoes are not suitable for both overpronators and underpronators, as they require extra cushioning in the heel and midsole for overpronators and outside cushioning for underpronators. Improper footwear can lead to foot deformities and increased fall risk, with common consequences including calluses or ingrown toenails. Improper footwear can also cause corns and calluses, which are caused by constant friction between toes and shoes in a restricted toe box volume.
How do you reshape flat shoes?
To make shoes more comfortable, apply a little heat, use ice, invest in a shoe stretcher, wear them around the house, layer socks, use a shoe stretch spray, and stuff them. If you have tight spots or pinched toes, try shoe-stretching tricks for a 1/2 inch or less of room. If you’re trying to squeeze your feet into a shoe three sizes too small, you should buy a new pair. These tips work better on natural materials like canvas and leather, as synthetic shoes tend to shrink back to their original size over time. However, if you’re trying to squeeze your feet into a shoe three sizes too small, you should consider buying a new pair.

How do you make flat shoes look good?
The wearing of flat footwear permits the display of a greater proportion of the human body, including the ankles, legs, and even toe cleavage. Flats are well-suited to be worn with a variety of garments, including those that are designed to accommodate low arches, low vamps, shorter skirts, dresses, and ankle pants. It is advisable to refrain from pairing loafers with midi skirts or bootcut jeans, as this may result in a somewhat masculine appearance.
It is advisable to maintain a low vamp on loafers and sneakers, as this allows for the display of the upper portion of the foot and the skin covering it. Additionally, lower vamp styles serve to accentuate toe cleavage.
Should shoes be lighter or darker than dress?
To avoid clashing colors, opt for shoes with a hair darker than your outfit, such as a fire-engine red dress with cherry-red heels. For a modern look, choose a single color and find pieces in slightly different shades, like Middleton’s blue lighter heels. Avoid matching the material of your outfit to your shoes, instead opting for footwear in the same color as your outfit but in a different material, like velvet or metallic, to add texture to your outfit. This will prevent the clashing of colors and create a cohesive look.
How can I make my flat shoes fit better?
To achieve a snugger fit in shoes, wet and dry them with water, wear thick socks to fill extra space, try insoles to reduce shoe size, use stuffing with cotton, paper, or rags, use footpads for comfort and cost-effectiveness, add elastic bands for a tighter fit, and insert shoe fillers in the toe box. If these methods don’t work, consult a cobbler for professional advice.
If you’re experiencing issues like slipping out of shoes, painful toes, or having an expired exchange date for larger shoes, consider the “too-big shoes” hack. Improperly fitting shoes can cause blisters, bunions, arch pain, and other painful issues. To avoid these issues, try these tips: wet and dry shoes with water, wear thick socks to fill extra space, try insoles to reduce shoe size, use stuffing with cotton, paper, or rags, add elastic bands for a tighter fit, and insert shoe fillers in the toe box. Seek professional advice if these hacks don’t work.
How do you redesign a flat?
To plan a flat renovation, it is essential to know your goals, consult an expert, consider planning permission, set a budget, research the trade, shop around for materials, and plan your project. Interior blogger Poppy Marples has recently updated a kitchen in a flat, providing valuable lessons for others to remodel their space.
To prepare your home for a flat renovation, first check the overall condition of the property. If there is any damage, such as damp or cracks, it is crucial to fix them before work starts. Poppy’s flat was in good shape and required no structural changes, but she had to make minor repairs before checking the plumbing and electrics ran smoothly.
By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth and successful flat renovation, whether it’s dealing with limited space or managing disgruntled neighbors. By focusing on these aspects, you can create a home update that reflects your aesthetic while retaining all the original features and character.
Is it OK to walk in flat shoes?
Wearing high heels can cause various health issues, such as bunions, hammertoes, neuromas, metatarsalgia, and stress fractures. Conversely, flat-soled shoes like ballet flats, flip-flops, and slippers can cause arch pain, fatigue, plantar fasciitis, heel pain, and tendonitis. The impact of high heels and flat shoes is influenced by the foot’s position. High heels put more pressure on the toes and forefoot area, while flats cause more stress, especially when lacking arch support and a thick cushioned sole.
To avoid these issues, it is recommended to choose shoes that save your “soles”. Choose roomy flats with arch support and a thick cushioned outer sole, add insoles for support and cushioning, and choose shoes with a stiff sole and mesh top cover for flexibility. Always choose the right shoe for your foot shape and size, and consider any foot ailments.
📹 Petite Dressing Mistakes | How To Look Taller In Flats
In this video I am revealing most common mistakes petite (and not only petite) women make that can make them look shorter, and …
Oh this was a much needed article Deirdre, thank you. The vivaia shoes look so stylish yet comfortable, I’m at the stage where flats are needed on a day to day basis and heels and wedges are car to bar 😄 Are the vivaia shoes true to size or do we go up or down….always a dilemma when ordering on line. Many thanks. Hope you’re having a great time in u.s. 🌸
Even though I’m only 5ft tall I wear flats almost exclusively. I just don’t like high heels, they hurt my feet badly. And, I’m older and retired so have no need for a very professional wardrobe. I wear loafers with jeans or ballet flats. I do have 2 pr of low heeled ankle boots that I wear with jeans in the fall and winter. I wear flat slide/sandals or flip flops all spring and summer and into early autumn. Sometimes autumn doesn’t really end until into Nov. here where I live. I’ve bought quite a few cute dresses for this summer. My legs are still pretty but at 65 I suddenly don’t want to wear shorts in public much. Plus, tee shirt dresses and long, thin, knit or cotton dresses are much cooler in Alabama because it’s very humid as well as hot . I agree that heels do elevate an outfit, but my life is very relaxed and simple….also, at 65, I don’t really care any more about “dressing up”.
Great tips Dierdre! The only option that I am adamant about are flip-flops. In my opinion, they belong on the beach. There is nothing more unattractive than someone dressed beautifully (man or woman) and then you look down at their feet and you see flip-flops. It ruins the outfit. There are so many other options, as you have demonstrated, if one has problem feet. Ladies, peave your flip-flops for the beach.
I tried Vivaia Aria shoes. Alas, they were NOT comfortable for me. I think if you have a high arch, they aren’t a great shoe. Maybe in the hemp fabric, but not the recycled bottles. I’ve had one pair for a year and they still aren’t comfy for any kind of serious walking. JMO. I reaally do like the wide color selection. That is a huge plus for that brand! I tihnk ballet shoes, in general, are hard to wear. That aren’t as comfy as one would think. They tend to cut right overr the delicate bones on the top of your foot. I do agree with you Deirdre that a more elongated toe is very flattering!!!
I never could wear heels 3-inches or higher, I think it’s because my feet are so short that the angle is just too steep. I love 2-2.5-inch heels, wedges, etc., the extra height gives me back the confidence I lost when I discovered three years ago that I’m not 5’6″ anymore (i’m 63). I’m only 5’4″, no wonder I looked heavy at the BMI I calculated for that height. I took the extra weight off, too, that helps one’s aspect ratio.
I love my new Sezane “Babies” in the pinky nude. They are super flattering, elegant and comfortable with their block heel of about 2.5″. These are what I choose for wearing with my better dresses, for evenings, etc. They are quite dressy enough for any California occasion, but look great for everyday, too. I haven’t seen a woman actually wearing higher (3-inch or higher) stiletto heels here since the mid-90s or so.
Really enjoyed this but wanted to ask for advice. I’m in my early 60s and have had a history of fracturing my feet, not because I’ve fallen but because I’ve stepped on stones or uneven ground and my foot has just gone over, so no more pretty shoes for me. I have to wear closed shoes that hold my feet very firmly. These shoes although needed are quite cumbersome looking and I’m wondering how I can wear them and still feel like I look nice and well dressed. To add to the issue, I’m quite petite and only 4 foot 8 inches. Thanks for your article.
Hi Dierdre, I’m with our community on this one, I wear flats or low heels now, the highest heel is 2″and I love my ankle boots! I recently purchased white ankle boots 2″ block heel. Im sure they will be fun to style up! But for now, its summertime, i wear ballet flats, sandals, i even have a pair of white lace trainers that are so cute with dresses or summer trousers!
