Child safety locks are designed to ensure the safety of children while on the road. However, they may not disengage, causing inconvenience and anxiety. To troubleshoot a stuck child safety lock, follow these steps:
- Open the door from the outside. If the child safety door lock is engaged, you can open the door from the inside.
- Remove the door trim panel and some inner plastic wrap on the inside of the door.
- Insert a small screwdriver when the inside door handle opens and jiggling cable allows the child lock to be disengaged. However, the issue occurs again when engaging.
- Some vehicles have a powered switch that pops the cover off of the door handle and drills a hole there. Then, reach in and reconnect the cable that probably came off of the child safety lock.
- If the child safety lock system is equipped with a glitch, it can sometimes force car owners to open the doors from the outside for their passengers. This can be stopped by setting the child lock levers off and inserting a piece of foam pipe insulation into the lever.
- Try pushing in on the inside release handle, the opposite of how you would pull if trying to open it. Most likely, your door lock module is knackered.
- Take the door panel off and see if the child safety lock switch is stuck in the “on” position. Spray WD-40 into the lock switch and move it up and down several times to move the switch up and down.
- Pull on the inside door latch handle while trying to move/disengage the child lock button. Aim to thump the handle on the side closest to the rear of the car.
- If the doors still don’t open from inside the car after disengaging the locks, call the police non-emergency service.
