How Parent-Child Interactions Are Impacted By Technology?

Parental technoference is a growing concern as technology continues to impact family relationships and the quality of parent-child relationships. This study examines how technology affects the interaction dynamics between parents and children in the family sphere, using library research. The report focuses on how children engage with digital technologies, screens, and social media, as well as parents’ attitudes about these behaviors.

The results reveal that being a negative digital role model, digital negligence, parents’ effective use of technology, and protection from digital risks partially contribute to parental technoference. Cross-lagged structural equation models of parent technology interference during parent–child activities, parenting stress, and child externalizing and internalizing can partially explain this phenomenon.

Technology can support the parent’s role in childrearing by providing social and informational support. However, disagreements over screen time and technology use can lead to conflicts within families. The use of technology, especially when not regulated correctly, tends to reduce the time parents and children should spend together. Technology’s most obvious impairment on family time is its enticing distraction of attention and presence, as well as its addictive traits.

Parental technoference can negatively impact parents’ interactions with their children of all ages because it reduces parental attention. It can also reduce the time they spend with their parents, as using technology provides warmth, love, and support. To address these issues, parents should keep an open conversation about digital issues, embrace the positive aspects of new technology while building skills to mitigate risks, and seek a balance between offering support and maintaining a healthy relationship with their children.

Shin et al. advocate for a life-course perspective in future technology design to promote parent-child relationships. Technology design should be responsive to the dynamic environment and transactional nature of relationships, and designers should be aware of technology’s role and provide timely suggestions.
