How Many Different Clothes Did Queen Elizabeth Own?

Queen Elizabeth II’s wardrobe is a testament to her commitment to fashion and her country. With 75 outfits on display and over 80 hats, the collection showcases the dresses, robes, and coronets worn by her for the 1937 coronation of her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The Queen has remained loyal to the British fashion industry throughout her life, even during 265 official overseas visits.

By 18 years old, Princess Elizabeth was familiar with floral pinafores as a Princess, bedazzled ballgowns as a newly crowned Queen, and the joy-inspiring rainbow wardrobe in later life. Her style consistently favored regal elegance over fads, with an impressive post-coronation wardrobe that spoke to the deep.

As the nation and the world mourn the loss of Queen Elizabeth II, an exclusive excerpt from her new book, The Queen: 70 Years of Majestic Style, shares the stories behind some of her most memorable looks. At her death, over 2000 gowns were recorded in her wardrobe, with dresses not worn by females in those days.

The Queen is known for wearing conservative dresses, colorful coats, and formal attire appropriate to various royal events. She can only repeat an outfit 2-3 times before it’s redesigned or reserved for private events. Some say there are about 200 handbags in her collection. Stewart Parvin has been responsible for the Queen’s outfits for many years.

In conclusion, Queen Elizabeth II’s wardrobe is a testament to her commitment to fashion and her understanding that what she wore mattered.

  • i, by chance, happened to visit buckingham palace when there was a retrospective of her clothing, including the wedding and coronation gowns. you really cannot appreciate the level of detail and workmanship on the coronation dress unless you see it in person, up close. photos do not do it justice. i was blown away.

  • It is absolutely arguable that she may have been the most influential person in the world, certainly the most famous. The clear takeaway from her life and times is that she understood duty and sacrifice, the burden of always setting an example that could be followed, from Prince to pauper. She lived by her own high standards with class and incredible dignity. There is no corner of this planet where she would go recognized, because of her example. Her place in history is assured.

  • Her life was not always sunshine and roses. She was a young girl during World War II. Britain was heavily bombed and even as that young girl spoke over the radio encouraging the people of Britain to have courage and determination to continue in the fight against the enemy. As a young woman she became an ambulance driver and learned to be a mechanic. Queen Elizabeth not only walked the walk but did it with great courage and determination. I wonder how many of us today could take that same walk. How many of us have that same courage and determination? Queen Elizabeth earned her place in history as well as the place in our hearts. I’m an American and I saw her Coronation as an elementary school girl. I’ve admired her because not only did she talk the talk but she also walked the walk. Never wavering from her path to good of the British and the Commonwealth. Definitely an icon and definitely someone to be admired.

  • I find it amazing that 3/4 of the world today has lived through this era of a great British Queen. She’ll go down in history as one of the greatest rulers of all time. She did it with grace and the attitude of being a servant to her country. Her fashion is only a small part of who she was, but like everything else she did, she did it with aplomb.

  • The coronation dress was remarked to be like a radiator due to all the beading. When the HMTQ wore it in New Zealand to open parliament on tour in 1954, the combination of the humidity and bright spot lights that had been pointed directly at her for the entire service, including her 8 minute speech all gave off heat that was absorbed and trapped within the thousands of beads, especially the bodice which had not an inch that wasn’t covered in these heat radiating beads. On top of this she wore the heavy Kokoshnik Tiara for the first time as well as the massive 26-diamond coronation necklace in its most full form, complete with the resplendent Lahore diamond, in the form of dazzling 23 carat pendant – which in terms of diamond necklaces it is best described as a collar of boulders. All of this capped off with (of course) bicep length white satin opera gloves, a pristine white mink Fur stole, draped over her shoulders, and a kilo of various booches and orders pinned to her diplomatic satin sash leaving not a square inch unadorned; thus providing even more insulation for Her Majesty. Truly a weighty and evidently thermal ensemble. However, true to form, the Queen didn’t even so much as waiver nor shed a drop of perspiration throughout her smooth and steady execution of her duties that HOT day in New Zealand.

  • ❤❤❤😢Thank you ladies for such a lovely respectful trip down memory lane. Gosh it just still doesn’t seem real that shes gone 😢. Her wedding dress really was gorgeous. Both the Queen and Margaret wore some stunning gowns in their youth .Princess Anne could have been a fashion model in her teens and early 20s too. She was quite stunning. I do hope we see perhaps Beatrice wear some of the Queens bright coloured skirt suits❤. Being quite tiny I think she would look adorable in them ❤. Please do more articles like this ladies ❤. Great stuff…although it makes a few tears sneak out of the eyes😢❤.

  • Her Majesty was the Imelda Marcos of hats and coats. I was fortunate enough to be able to see up close the hat she wore to the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.Every hat tells a story, they are/ were stunning. I would love to have a book on them all. It comes from a time America no longer has and that is a shame. Elizabeth was a colorful trailblazer. And looked grand in every thing she wore .🇺🇸

  • I’m a proud, black Christian man who has lived in the United States all my life. But I’ve been a big fan of the British royal family for over 20 years. That happened mostly after the tragic death of the late, great Princess Diana. But I’ve been a big admirer of Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and quite naturally Queen Elizabeth I l 👑. Oh what a beautiful, wonderful, awesome, and extraordinary woman she was. I wish that I could have had the chance to meet her. And her husband and consort, Prince Philip, the Prince Consort, and Duke of Edinburgh. I was gonna visit both London and Paris in 1985. But I changed my mind, because I was moving and couldn’t afford to move and take a trip like that. An old friend of mine, and possibly my father. Felt that I was in no position to take a trip like that. Because I had ran up some credit cards 💳. Whern I look back 🔙. There were other times after that. That i could have visited at least London. And now I wish I had. Well, RIP to the beautiful Queen Elizabeth I l 👑. God bless the newly crowned King Charles I ll 👑, and his country, family, and all the other lands that he is the king 👑 over!

  • I am not a Monarchist, however this woman is always so appropriate in clothing and manners, elegant without exaggeration and unique even when dressing in the field on horseback. I have always liked to see her, no, without great beauty or stature, she eclipsed all the other Queens or princesses. A very clear, defined personality ordered at the head of the UK, for so many decades in which the world has turned a lot. She undoubtedly has a special place in History.

  • The Queen Elizabeth II was the most famous, sincere and genuine successful fashion icon, so unique only to The Queen Elizabeth II. Every senior working Royal will never ever come close The Queen Elizabeth II main fashion timeless accessory was her beautiful silk head scarf as was taken on by The Queen’s only daughter, The Princess Royal, Princess Anne. So beautiful and elegant and the loving bond and connection between mother and daughter via a silk head scarf 🧣

  • It’s fitting that when the late Queen passed there were multiple rainbows sighted all over the UK and certain areas in the Commonwealth, but landmarks like her homes at Buckingham palace and Windsor castle. She was someone who loved color, she was blessed to do well wearing many different shades and hues of a variety of colors. It’s funny as she maintained a mixture of different facet of her personality, stoicism, elegance, charming, a witty sense of humor, humble, graceful, smart, … and her wardrobe over the years demonstrated each of these qualities while remaining polished and timeless. In the end, she pulled it off to be able to gently stand out of the crowd for the pride of her nation as the forefront of her mindset, while representing the core of being British.

  • Queen Elizabeth 11 reigned over the UK and the Commanwealth with an amazing fortitude being seen by her public was so important to her it was not a vain thing she wanted her subjects to see her and her wonderful outfits showed this, didn’t matter who she was there to see she made sure her people saw her. We will probably never see a reign like she had again.

  • She was a wonderful queen. I don’t know what else she did wrong, but she didn’t handled Diana’s situation (seeing from the outside) well. Her uncle Edward VIII situation was another one that I thought she could’ve done better after her father’s death. I am sure she was going to fell with Harry too. But what a woman, what a woman!

  • Thank you – this was very well done! I remember seeing the Queen when I was a little girl in Fredericton, NB, Canada. Even though this was during the 1970’s – an era not known for great fashion – Her Majesty looked stunning in her day look and then again later, in her ball gown in the evening. I was too small to be able to push to the front so I never met her, but I could see that her smile was so much more electric than I saw on tv as she climbed the stairs to the building where the reception was being held. I was gutted when we lost her as it was clear to everyone that we had just lost so much more than a person.

  • I’m ABSOLUTELY sure the BLUE hat with the YELLOW flowers in a CIRCLE was an absolute coincidence, FOR SURE, that’s completely believable and not obvious ass covering AT ALL😂😂😂 no hate btw, I love it, just like wearing the Obamas brooch for meeting Trump, the Queen can throw shade without saying a thing😂

  • My older sister and i dressed like twins when we were little. She is four tears older than me so inevitably she wanted to dress like a teenager. I remember crying my eyes out the first Sunday we went to church in different dresses. My sister is the single greatest influence on my life. I can really relate to QE and PM. This past Christmas i gifted my sister a sweet photograph of them in an ornate frame. She keeps it on her bedside table. ❤️ God rest the souls of those beautiful sisters.
