How Do Ucs Look Into Extracurricular Activities?

This series covers three main categories: evaluating academic record, evaluating extracurriculars, and fine-print admissions questions. When listing extracurricular activities on your UC application, it is crucial to showcase a mix of interests, leadership, commitment, and impact. The UC Undergraduate Student Experience Survey (UCUES) is administered biennially and includes questions on students’ participation in extracurricular activities.

In this week’s interview with an UC insider, tips on combating low GPA, appealing rejections, the differences between a 1 (best score) and a 2 (second-to-best) candidate, the UC tolerance for senioritis, and the real workings of University of California admissions are discussed. The interview also discusses how computers and humans score apps, tricks to bump up scores, and the importance of verifying information in applications.

UC campuses evaluate each application without knowing the status of the same application at another campus. In making admission decisions, campuses do not know the status of the same application at another campus. The Educational Testing Service was commissioned to cull a small sample of applicants to investigate extracurricular activities.

Applicants can prove their extracurricular activities, such as volunteer hours, research/academic awards, and leadership awards, and whether they meet the criteria for transfer admission. While completion of required coursework and GPA are the most important criteria for transfer admission evaluation, UCs also consider extracurricular activities as a valuable part of their admission process.

Is a 4.6 good for UCLA?

UCLA’s acceptance rates are decreasing annually, making it crucial to maintain an unweighted GPA of 4. 0 and a weighted GPA of at least 4. 6. The university does not require or consider standardized tests like SAT or ACT scores, making student GPAs more important. In May 2020, the University of California suspended standardized testing score requirements in admissions until 2024, and in 2024, it permanently stopped considering these scores in admissions and scholarship decisions.

Standardized test scores and demonstrated interest are not considered. The UCLA Common Data Set (CDS) is a valuable resource that helps shape an applicant’s application. UCLA admissions officers evaluate applicants based on factors like GPA, application essays, and extracurricular activities. They prioritize these factors over standardized test scores and demonstrated interest.

This multi-stage review demonstrates that UCLA values both good grades and personal character, demonstrating that while good grades are important, UCLA also values an applicant’s engagement with their community.

Do UC schools care about extracurriculars?

UCs prioritize a demonstrated interest in a student’s field of study and leadership potential over completing required coursework and GPA. Extracurricular activities can help distinguish applicants from highly qualified transfer applicants in competitive majors. To gain experience or develop leadership abilities, students can join college clubs, student government, volunteer with community, nonprofit, or faith-based organizations, or work as interns or at a job.

If unable to participate in extracurricular activities due to work or family obligations, students should explain their situation in the UC Application and find other ways to show interest in their field of study. Leadership is defined by an old guideline from the UCLA Alumni Scholarship Program, which can be used to identify situations where students have exhibited leadership qualities.

The school values students who actively participate in the campus community and demonstrate their potential to contribute to the school. UC selects a random pool of applicants to verify information in their application, which takes place in mid-December. Applicants are notified via mail, email, and text message about their selection and instructions on meeting the requirements. They are asked to provide original documentation to verify one item from the UC application, including academic history, honors and awards, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, special program participation, employment, or personal insight responses.

Instructions include how to complete the process and a list of appropriate documentation, such as official transcripts, letters from teachers, counselors, or coaches, or certificates or awards. • Ahh I’m so glad I found this article! It basically gave me a sigh of relief because I thought an international student would have to do some really crazy stuff to get into MIT, which is my dream school. I’m living in the US and unsure if I could get a green card by the time I apply to college, because so far my biggest accomplishment is just qualifying for Pink MOP (which you’ve probably heard of since you did math comps too) Thank you for this article, and congrats on your acceptances!

  • Thank you so much for this! I also really appreciate your disclaimer at the end; you worded everything perfectly. You should consider college counselling because I know students like myself would love to meet with you regularly if we had the opportunity! You’re genuine, likeable, and definitely deserving of your results. Congratulations again!😁

  • Wow, our experiences are really similar (guess it’s a Canadian thing). We even got the same SAT score at the same time in the same year of highschool. As a current junior aspiring to get into MIT math, I’ve been learning ahead in math and participating in a bunch of math competitions (but moreso out of my passion for math than to simply get admitted). However, I only recently learned about AP exams and so I’m predicting I won’t take as many APs as I’d like to by the end of highschool(currently I’m self-studying for bc and physics c mechanics; next year I’m planning to take at least physics c em, stats, chem, and lang) Hopefully I share the same fate as you and get into MIT, but ultimately it’s a luck thing!

  • i think i’ll end up having a hard time making my application half as good as yours :(( my high school doesn’t really have a lot of extracurricular activities to offer, and they rarely participate in contests + covid came :// i plan on going to a state uni for shs which hopefully would open doors to opportunities :- D

  • I have a few doubts and I don’t know whom to ask Do mit provide any 100% scholarship iam not being greedy its just my family is middle class and i dont want my dream to be a burden to them, secondly they are saying you should be active in extracurricular activities like community service, internship but where will i get this qualification right after 12th Reply pleasee
