James Joyce’s short story “A Mother” explores themes of nurturing, love, and sacrifice in the context of motherhood. The chapters in this volume focus on contemporary representations of motherhood and mothering, demonstrating the significance of these themes. Buchi Emecheta’s “The Joys of Motherhood” is an accessible 2005 book that explores how women try to make sense of and narrate their experiences as mothers.
The protagonist, June, is an unfit mother because she is not actively trying to work through her trauma but rather letting it consume her and fuel her rage. The story also explores the complex relationship between mothers and daughters and the inherent bond between them.
Hwang Sun-won’s “Conversation in June about Mothers” highlights the importance of living in a way that feels good for each individual. Soli, separated from her son, is depicted as a catastrophe, but even in her grief, there remains a realistic portrayal of motherhood as a catastrophe.
The main focus of these books is the complex relationship between mothers and daughters, and the emotions they experience during their first year as mothers. The author reflects on her own experiences as a mother, feeling joy, exhaustion, love, and growth. The book also highlights the need to challenge traditional portrayals of motherhood as difficult and challenging.

What causes the breakdown between June and her mother?
June, a young girl from a small Chinatown, is forced by her mother to take piano lessons. Despite her mother’s desire for her to become a prodigy, June fails in her school recital due to her refusal to practice correctly. This conflict with her mother continues as June grows up in America, where she has more opportunities and opportunities.
The mother’s intention for June to become a prodigy was to gain bragging rights and respect among the small Chinatown community. She had no intention of gaining any other knowledge beyond her own heritage. In “Everyday Use”, the mother had no intention of acquiring any new knowledge.
In Amy Tan’s short story “Two Kinds”, the mother and daughter confront each other due to their anxiety about finding her daughter’s prodigy. However, through one significant scene, the daughter becomes aware of her mother’s love and comes to terms with herself. The piano offer for Jing-Mei’s thirtieth birthday transforms her from a “pleading child” into a “perfect contented” adult.
In “The Joy Luck Club”, Amy Tan highlights the influence a mother’s past has on her child’s decisions. Suyuan, who tried to flee China with her babies during the war, pressures June to become a prodigy. Suyuan pushes June to practice piano every day, two hours a day, from four to six. This demonstrates Suyuan’s need for June to succeed and achieve her goals.
How does June’s point of view about becoming a prodigy change?
The narrator finds the process of learning to play the piano more engaging than the act of taking tests and thus chooses to pursue her musical interests independently, rather than being compelled to become a prodigy. She posits that the tests represent her mother’s displeasure with her. In “Two Kinds,” the narrator articulates her belief that she has repeatedly fallen short of her mother’s expectations, asserting her right to embrace a less than exemplary performance. Failure has become a means of expressing her independence.
How does June’s relationship with her mother contribute to June becoming both kinds of daughter?
“Two Kinds” is a story about June, a Chinese immigrant who has high expectations for her daughter. She believes that there are two types of daughters: those who obey and those who follow their own dreams. June’s relationship with her mother is initially strained, as she is forced to become a prodigy and practice piano. Initially, June rebels against her mother’s expectations, intentionally playing poorly during a piano recital, causing a rift in their relationship.
However, as the story progresses, June begins to understand her mother’s intentions and sacrifices as an immigrant. She realizes that her mother’s strictness and desire for her success were driven by love and hope for a better life for her daughter. At the end of the story, June’s mother gives her the piano as a symbol of their renewed connection, recognizing the value of her mother’s expectations and the importance of embracing her Chinese heritage. This journey leads June to become both a rebellious daughter and a daughter who appreciates and honors her mother’s culture and desires for her success.

Parenthood is not only the physical act of becoming a parent but a state of mind as well. It requires love, forethought, empathy, commitment and dedication to welcome the new lives you are responsible for into the world, protect them and help them develop & for that you need to sacrifice a lot of things, sometimes your own self. Not only a mother but a father as well🙏♥️😇
Rubina, when you talked about husband’s support during pregnancy, tears rolled down my cheek. Husband’s emotional support is equally important which i didnt get. He never touched to feel baby movements during pregnancy which i think every husband should do. When i used to vomit he used to ask me to vomit without making any noice which was not in my hands. Though he is a nice guy but many (not all) indian husbands are brought up in such environment that they dont understand a pregnant woman’s needs and feelings Anyways, a suggestion : Abhinav should also do such Kisi ne bataya nahi episodes for would be / new fathers so that men should also learn to be a supportive partner in different ways
Beautiful episode Rubina❤️ thank you for not only this season but for the entire concept of kisine bataya nahi… The entire show. Being a parent doesn’t start when you give birth to your child but way before that and it’s a never ending process. You have started this show from that very beginning & spreading awareness about every single detail… Bravo👏💞♥️

I lived in UK for 12 years, had my child 8 years ago in UK. The healthcare in UK is quite alarming and I totally agree with Rubina that healthcare in India is outstanding. I don’t mind paying for it as long as I get immediate help, which is absent in UK.. Education is free in UK or in the west no doubt, but upbringing and education in India is definitely the way to go. Considering all the pros and cons, to be with our family, now I have moved back to India for good 😊 my daughter loves India and doesn’t feel like going back to UK, although she was born and brought up for a few years there. I loved the whole episode, heart to heart talk between the sisters 😊❤
It is easy to get PR in Canada compared to other developed nations. This is primarily because Canada has set high annual immigration targets, aiming to attract skilled workers to support its economy and demographic growth. Also, PR is different from Citizenship. Comprehension of my comments might be a herculean task for the audience of this article. Again, not all literates can be considered as truly educated.
Such an Amazing series and article. I also live in the US and missing family is the main thing that you feel. Rohini was speaking a lot on top of Rubina, may be because she is not trained for this, but she was not letting Rubina finish her sentences and kept speaking in between. Not criticizing, just something I noticed till the end of article. You both are lovely strong women and moms. Keep going 🙂 ❤

I have to correct a statement here. There are health insurance policies in India that provide maternity coverage. While these plans do have a waiting period for maternity benefits, they do offer comprehensive coverage. As an influencer, it’s important to research well before making claims to avoid spreading misinformation. BTW, some of the popular plans are from Star Health, Max Bupa, ICICI Lombard, HDFC ERGO, Bajaj Allianz, and Religare.
Honestly India is far better than Canada, especially abhi toh Canada ki halat bhut khrb h And ya if u are talking about health insurance Dude medical itna khrb h na ki aap pain Mai marjaoge but doc ni dekhne wala apko Medical is pathetic,Maine Khudh face Kiya hai yaha sab Kuch Not only me sabko yha medical bekar lgta h Free hai wo Achi baat h Doesn’t mean ki achaa h India ki population bhi bhut h yaar And thanks Rubina this is the main point mn paisa sab Kuch ni hai Doctor easily available hote h har chiz ke liye thts what matters at the end❤❤India is the best❤
Rubina, even in western countries one can take private health insurance then receive personal care during hospital stay. Even abroad normal health insurance does not cover matenity care as pregnancy is a choice not an illness. One can take maternity insurance separately that covers emergencies during child birth. Private care abroad is par excellence, better than what you receive in India. Tried and tested both. Good to see healthy happy babies❤.
The best episode so far! Rohini dilaik is my favorite sister out of all 3 n she was exactly the same how she is in her vlogs. Loved her! Also I liked rubina’s saree very much. Bich bich mein rubina ne kafi overacting kia which was not necessary. Also I didn’t rly like the advice given by mom dad to rohini. But the point of financial education was really good. Overall, very nice episode!
Rohini ❤❤ plz someone host rubina, she is more excited to speak and praise about herself than the guests… 1.fyi there is insurance for maternity in india too.. rohini u didn’t mentioned the 1. tax u pay in canada and 2. also the waiting period for any health check up… 3. I remember u visiting dentist after returning to india during ur marriage, why not in canada?
Hi Rubina… I think women should be mother when she thinks about baby… Apka sare episode after delivery pe hote h but sometimes ase b ladies hote h jo first time maa ban re hote h r unke sath ase incidents ho jate h because of pata ni tha ya kisi ne bataya nai❤ so pls ap ek asa b episode jarur laiye apne kise frnd k sath….
Canada is having so many issues in terms of medical. Until the kind of die situation, you don’t get treatment even if in emergency situations. Waiting period is quite long. In India, there are so many gov policies and there are adequate insurances also. Please don’t claim or provide mis information to your viewers.
Of course you want your child to be a Canadian citizen lol Also, even though medical is free in Canada the population has grown so much that the wait time is ridiculous to see the doctor at this point. It’s better in US where you pay a certain amount but you get seen right away at hospital/specialist.
