The Forsyth County Early Childhood Education (ECE) Task Force, chaired by County Commissioner Don Martin and WS/FCS Superintendent Tricia McManus, is focusing on implementing a Pre-K program. The task force was established in 2021 to determine recommendations and create a plan for implementing Pre-K education. Martin, who retired as Superintendent of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools in 2013, believes that children are the future of democracy and that the task force should not be convinced of its importance. Martin, who taught math and physics at a school in North Wilkesboro, believes that children are the future of democracy. The Task Force is committed to developing affordable, high-quality Pre-K experiences that are inclusive, joyful, create a love of learning, and build positive identity. Martin has always respected parents’ right to send their child to a private school or educate them at home, and has no internal conflict. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners elected Martin as chair and Gloria Whisenhunt as vicechair. The first meeting of the Task Force will be an informal discussion.
