Maternity leave in the UK does not result in a pay rise, and employees must recalculate their average weekly earnings (AWE) to account for pay rises awarded or that would have been awarded had the employee not been on maternity leave. The impact of a reduction in hours on maternity pay depends on the stage of pregnancy when the change in hours occurs. Rules on when and how to claim paid leave and changing dates can be found online.
Work rights while on maternity leave include pay, pension, holiday, and bonuses. Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) and Statutory Shared Parental Pay (ShPP) can be obtained for up to 39 weeks. Employees can use the maternity pay calculator to work out their work rights during maternity leave.
Statutory maternity pay is the standard type of maternity pay that can be received if an employee works for at least 26 weeks before their due date. This type of pay is based on an employee’s average pay, so it is important to keep your pay as high as possible while the employer works out your average.
Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is paid for up to 39 weeks, with 90% of your average weekly earnings (before tax) for the first six weeks. If an employer offers enhanced maternity pay, employees may have to repay some or all of the enhanced amount. Working during maternity or other statutory family leave will stop statutory pay.

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris met face-to-face for the first time in Philadelphia for the ABC …
What happens if I am sick before maternity leave?
Pregnancy-related sick leave may result in the receipt of statutory sick pay for a period of up to four weeks prior to the expected date of childbirth. Additionally, maternity pay may be available. In the event of illness during the final four weeks preceding the expected date of delivery, maternity leave and pay will commence. Medical professionals are able to ascertain whether an employee’s absence is due to pregnancy-related illness. Furthermore, an employee cannot be dismissed from their position on the grounds of pregnancy discrimination.
Does SSP affect maternity pay?
The first six weeks of Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) are paid at 90 of your average earnings during the calculation period. If your earnings are lower than normal due to receiving SSP during part of the period, your SMP during the first six weeks will be reduced. You can book annual leave to boost your earnings for SMP. You continue to accrue annual leave during sick leave and are entitled to take annual leave if you are off sick.
If your average earnings are below the Lower Earnings Limit of £123 (April 2024-April 2025), you may be able to claim Maternity Allowance from the Jobcentre Plus, which is paid for 39 weeks at a flat rate of £184. 03.
Can I earn extra money while on maternity leave UK?
Typically, working on a self-employed basis doesn’t affect statutory pay, except for those on Maternity Allowance (MA). MA allows up to 10 Keeping in Touch (KIT) days without affecting pay. Any work beyond these 10 days will disqualify the individual from claiming MA. However, if a business generates income while receiving MA, it should not disqualify the individual from receiving MA. If the individual is on MA and wants to know if self-employment affects their MA, they should consult Jobcentre Plus or seek advice.
What happens if I start a new job and get pregnant?
To protect yourself from pregnancy discrimination, it is crucial to inform your employer of your pregnancy early if you are concerned about health and safety risks at work or need to take paid time off for antenatal care. Protection against such discrimination is only likely to be granted once you inform your employer. If you are feeling unwell during pregnancy and need to take sick leave, it is important to inform your employer so that any pregnancy-related sick leave is counted separately and not used for redundancy or disciplinary purposes.
It may be challenging to prove that unfair treatment was due to pregnancy unless you have good evidence or have told your employer. It is recommended to follow up in writing to maintain a record of your communication and ensure others are aware of your pregnancy.
How long do you have to work before maternity leave UK?
In order to qualify for statutory maternity pay, an individual must have been employed by the same employer for a minimum of 26 weeks, have earned a minimum of £123 per week for a minimum of eight weeks prior to the qualifying week, and be eligible for such pay from each employer. In the event that an individual is legally classified as a worker, they may also be eligible.
How can I top up my maternity pay?
Universal Credit is a benefit for low-income individuals who are not already on other means-tested benefits or Tax Credits. It is a monthly payment to cover living costs, taking into account your whole household income and savings, including any maternity pay. If you live with a partner, you must claim jointly, even if they are working full-time, and their income and savings will be taken into account. If you and/or a partner have more than £16, 000 in savings or other assets, you cannot get Universal Credit.
If you are already on Working Tax Credits, Child Tax Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, income-related Employment Support Allowance, or income-based Jobseekers Allowance, you should not claim Universal Credit without getting further advice as it could worsen your situation and prevent you from returning to your old benefits.
Can I get maternity pay if I just started a job in the UK?
Statutory Maternity Leave is not available for surrogates, regardless of employment duration, hours worked, or pay. Instead, they can receive Statutory Adoption Leave and Pay. To qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP), one must earn at least £123 a week, provide accurate pregnancy notice and proof, and have worked for at least 26 weeks, including the qualifying week before the expected childbirth week.
Can I work my second job while on maternity leave UK?
If you have two jobs and were employed by both employers during the qualifying week (15th week before the baby was due), you can take shared parental leave/pay from your main job and continue working in your other job if you wish. Ann, who qualifies for maternity leave with two employers, can take SMP from Employer A but not SMP from Employer B due to her low wages. She can continue working for Employer B while taking SPL from Employer A, and her entitlement to ShPP from Employer A does not affect her work for Employer B. However, she must show that she is still caring for her child during the leave period from Employer A.
Do you get full pay on maternity leave UK?
Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is a form of compensated leave for eligible employees, typically extending for up to 39 weeks. The amount of pay is based on the employee’s average weekly earnings before tax. The initial six-week period is compensated at a rate of 90% of the applicable average weekly earnings (AWE), while the subsequent 33 weeks are remunerated at a rate of £184. The amount is calculated as 03 or 90 of their AWE.
What if I am too sick to work while pregnant?
Pregnancy-related sickness can lead to sick leave, which can be disciplined or dismissed by employers. Most employers allow a few days off without a doctor’s note, but longer periods may require a doctor’s note. If the sickness is pregnancy-related, it is crucial to have the doctor or midwife confirm this in the sick note to ensure it is disregarded.
Sick leave is different from other forms of leave in that it can be disciplined or dismissed for taking too much time off, except for pregnancy-related illnesses. If an employer believes the sickness is not genuine or excessive, they may discipline or dismiss the employee under performance management procedures.
If a long or repeated period of sickness occurs, even if the employer believes the illness is genuine, the employer can dismiss the employee on the grounds of capability, even if the illness was caused in the workplace. This situation may result in additional claims against the employer.
Can you work while on maternity leave in the UK?
Employees can work up to 10 days during maternity or adoption leave, known as ‘keeping in touch days’, which are optional and must be agreed upon by both the employee and employer. The type of work and pay provided should be agreed upon before starting work. Shared parental leave in touch (SPLIT) days, which are in addition to the 10 ‘keeping in touch days’, can be worked up to 20 days. Employment terms and conditions are typically protected, and employees are entitled to pay increases and improvements during leave.
@ABCNews What is your statement about the conflict of interest, moderating this debate, by Linsey Davis, being a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the same sorority as Kamala Harris, as well as your moderators having fact-checked Trump five times and did not correct Harris a single time? Your credibility as a source of news, continues to crumble into irrelevance.
The first question: Are we better off than four years ago? She didn’t answer the question but instead talked about a plan and then talked about Trump’s tax cut. Rent is up by 30%, food is up 25%, Insurance premiums up 25%- 40% and everyday Americans under the current administration is definitely less better off…but lets create Tik Tok memes on eating cats because that will solve the issues.
“Nowhere in America is a woman carrying a pregnancy to term and asking for an abortion. That isn’t happening; it’s insulting to the women of America,” Harris said. Harris also invoked religion in her response, arguing that “one does not have to abandon their faith” to agree that the government should not control reproductive health decisions.
I have an idea, let them debate with no audience and record it. But do not broadcast it…yet. Then have the network do all the fact-checking. Then broadcast the debate with a large screen behind them with the actual statistics as they are talking. Lies in red, facts in green. Done. This is the only way. AND, it is important both candidates agree on the fact-checking source(s).
First off, she slid right past the question. She never answered the very first question. Second, she says she’s going to give tax cuts and never says how that will add to the deficit but in the same breath, attacks his tax cuts…that’s so hypocritical. I have no place to tell anyone what to do but, I’m tired of hearing women say “don’t tell me what to do with my body”. But having an abortion is not “her body”. That’s the child’s body and life. They need to rephrase this argument. Personally I don’t care what other do but, get your phrases correct for the argument. Trump didn’t make it illegal to have an abortion. All that happened is, it was made up to the states to vote on their own abortion issues. If you don’t like the state you live in, you can move to one that fits your personal views better. That’s one thing that’s great about this country. It’s that simple. I’d really like to see presidential candidates that actually want to fix our issues like our insane deficit. Only one president in our history has paid off the national debt. I don’t think that people in this country realize how much our deficit means. Nobody seems too concerned about it. This is a very major problem that need a lot of attention. Seems like this is a very rigged debate. They attack his statements and not hers at all even though she won’t even answer the questions asked. There’s too much fear mongering in this debate. Just like all the other BS propaganda. I like that she talks about her struggles as a child and not being able to afford much but in the last 4 years our cost of goods are through the roof in the shortest time frame.
Force goverment to stop the crazy unnecessary spending on wars and weapons and goverment excessive salary. Force goverment to significantly reduce taxes for everybody and work within a budget without borrowing and reckless spending. Push the goverment to be responsible and focus on the needs and wants of tye domestic USA population.
My favorite part is when Trump loses it and dogwhistles for bomb scares in Springfield … not that I like bomb scares … but I feel that my evaluation of Trumps behavior to be validated: He SUCKS and he’s an incompetent irresponsiblle corrupt champion of discourtesy and leader of the discourtesy party.
9:59 is pretty smart on Harris’ part. She is using his greatest weakness, his continuous need for external approval, against him. And then she twists the blade by turning Wharton, one of his main sources of external approval as credibility, against him. It works: by 15:00 he’s so angry he has forgotten whatever policy his advisors told him to propagate and he’s going off topic and rambling angrily incoherently and making it up as he goes along, even lying to defend himself, while she justs stands there with an almost imperceptible smile, knowing she’s got him exactly where she wants him, and preparing to hit him with another fatal blow.
“I have a concept of a plan” – Trump. 😂 On asked about Obama Care. Same dude who has had nearly 9 years to develop his plan since he started campaigning. Yet, people give Kamala flack for not having a stance on a policy or two when she’s been running for a couple of months. The double standard are unreal.
I wonder why, after being in office for 3.5 years, she hasn’t been able to achieve any of her goals with the support of her team. Could it be that she only says these things because she is in the spotlight now and trying to make a good impression, or is she simply ineffective? Neither option is good for the people. I’m not impressed with her communication style; her tone often comes across as condescending, and she tends to talk a lot without saying much of substance. She frequently answered questions by speculating about Donald Trump’s plans, and sometimes her remarks were so nonsensical that they made me wonder whether I should cry or laugh. BUT, if she wins, we can expect lower house prices, reduced taxes, and a lower cost of living, because that is what she promised. Riiiight? 😉
Thumbs down for me because they only talked down upon each other while saying at the same time they wanted to work together I love and respect both of them and would much rather their time be spent on unity bipartisan work and working together and focusing on where they see they can advance our country for the positive in the future and not throw each other’s work away God bless all of them I wish the public would give them more encouragement that we need them to work together and highly discouraged them from talking down on one another we need both of their and their administration’s great minds working towards solutions toward the same problems the work will be bipartisan it won’t be thrown away when the next party gets in and it will be long lasting and worth the tax dollars spent on the payroll toward working on the laws in this God bless and remember we are to be each other’s keepers
The minimum wage is 7.25, in Texas and other states, yet rent is above $1,000 for a one bed 1 bath home, no insurance, and school debt is all-time high. Gas is high, eggs are $18 a box, yet people coming in are getting $30,000 grants to build a home, what about university students who are trying to make it in life where are those home grants to start their home building. Ridiculous no one answers with solutions just ranting on each other
For average people, both of these 2 won’t make a difference in your life. Usa is a country of instituons, do you think trump or anyone will tell CIA or the military what they should do? They r not the real decision makers. Inflation has many reasons(not trump nor biden s fault) covid made it worst but inflation was gonna happen anyways due to the economic cycle (peak..)
Kamala, you say we don’t want a leader who is constantly trying to have Americans point fingers at each other….you do know that you’re supposed to be an example, right? In this whole debate that’s all you have done! All you have done is point your finger at Trump for anything that has gone wrong in this country. You haven’t once actually answered any questions or taken responsibility for your actions or words. You change the subject. Right from the start. No one answered that first question.
Inflation is worldwide. I am a world traveler and most countries have rampant unemployment as well. They have envy of the US’s high employment rate. Nowhere in the debate was the high employment rate brought up. Although 13 people were killed in the Afghanistan withdrawal, several presidents including trump talked about withdrawing from Afghanistan, Biden did it. Period. We’re out of the Middle East.
Both of this is cringe! One is a meme and one is random. COME ON AMerica! When are we gonna stand up for ourselves!! WE THE PEOPLE DIDNT LET FENTANYL IN WE THE PEOPLE DIDNT RAISE OUR TAXES WE THE PEOPLE ARENT SELLING TO CHINA! ITS ALL GOVERNMENT EVEN PRESIDENTS!!! Let’s stop letting people speak for us!!!!
I am around 70% sold on Kamala Harris. She is fairly sharp and eloquent, her politics are somewhat good (I refuse to say solid, because there are either unexplained holes or they are too diffusely formulated to probe for issues). However, I am not at all sold on what Donald Trump tries to sell. It lands at 0%, because even if you find a point in where you agree with his opinion, it must be evident that being unable to correctly cite facts, is a major issue. During the first 40 minutes alone, I count 5 accounts on which he’s downright wrong – which can be validated and should have been reasons to close the debate entirely. There are multiple other accounts on… let’s call it, wrongful imprecision. Where it could be willful or not. However: There is no reason to listen to those who cannot or will not distinguish between fact and random wrong points. At this point, it’s not whether you are pro or against Harris. It’s whether you want Trump to be in power of anything.
I wasn’t able to watch this live as I am overseas. I have watched the first 27 minutes so far. When does Harris actually answer the question that was asked of her so that I might skip ahead to that point in the debate? I’ve already heard all of the “Blah, blah, blah” that is coming from her mouth previously from Biden. What about the illegal border crossing reasons report you went to “discover?” Are we better off today than 4 years ago? Are you able to comprehend that a question begs an answer specifically to that particular question? Do the “debate moderators” ever challenge Harris on her supposed facts, or is it just a given that she tells the truth? Fact checkers/moderators only challenge one of the debaters?
Kamala is so human and genuine. I love it. She started off nervous like anyone in such an important race would, but then she pulled it together quick and just blew us all away! Trump was so stunned he couldn’t think straight. He actually could have done well had he not gone of course and started telling falsehoods. He was sounding good at first.
A surge in new migrants is colliding with the U.S.’ housing crisis, and even putting a minor dent in the shelter problem is costing state and local governments millions. Why it matters: Cities simply don’t have enough affordable homes, enough shelters or enough money to help everyone who needs it, straining scarce resources and leaving thousands of people out on the street.
It amazes me how people still think that Trump is fit for purpose. A man full of self interest, hatred and bile!! Harris was very clever, She didn’t need to do a great deal, just plant the odd seed and let him go!! I do hope though, that the American people get to hear a proper debate on policies before the big day!
Heartiest congratulations to the world’s oldest democracy for entering its general elections. The united states of America With its economic and military power occupying the first place in the world, any action taken by America affects 8 billion people of the world. 500 people elected by the American people and nominated on the basis of merit carry out future plans affecting 8 billion people of the world. But the main reason is America’s strength as a global leader is due to its position on humanitarian and independent values. Humane and independent values that bind the common American citizen in a sincere bond with the people of the greatest part of the world. But when a value is forcibly changed from its real state and used for self-interest, that changed value becomes a formidable destructive weapon. The root causes of suffering, responsible bloodshed and needless death all over the world today lie in the tendency to use these values for self-serving political purposes. We have to keep in mind that the wars scattered in different parts of the world can turn into a big war collectively at any moment and then the situation is out of our control. American common citizens will elect their future leaders through voting rights, but before that, current leaders and leadership must be questioned about their actions against independent values and human rights How affected and affected.
These Chinese are very funny… not to say ungrateful… China went from being a poor country, where its population was hungry and lived in misery, to a large and developed country thanks to its closeness to the Western world… sometimes taking inspiration from their way of life, sometimes copying and spying on their technology, sometimes disrespecting trademarks and patents, sometimes sending thousands of Chinese students to universities in Western countries… this, in addition to having millions of Chinese and Chinese companies spread throughout all Western countries… and as a demonstration of “recognition and gratitude” they are joining forces militarily with Russia, which has shown itself to be the number one enemy of Western countries… how many billions of dollars does China earn in its trade with Western countries? … but, the commercial partnership should be allied to the military partnership… and that is not what we are seeing… these Chinese are very funny…
I miss the days when civic duty and competence and character was valued over sloganeering, identity, cult of personality, tribalism, and sensational rhetoric. But when you give the consumer exactly what it was, it’ll corrupt the information that it consumes to the point of hearing exactly what makes them addicted to tribal herd mentality, emotional lizard brain style of politics. We need a severe humbling in America
I’m from South Africa and I just finished perusal the debate. I love VP Harris, her agenda and her philosophy, but I don’t think she’d win the WH because at the end of the day this is a man’s world though, she did make strong statements on important matters. Her one mistake though is that she discredited Trump for meeting with Dictators trying to come up with different solutions and different approaches to get them to make deals with the US so that everyone benefits in peace, of which the current administration is failing to do. It is the duty of all world leaders to meet with allies and “ESPECIALLY” enemies, get both parties in the same room, settle their differences for the sake of peace and their economies. You cannot expect a bully to stop the bullying unless you sit down with him/her in the same room as the bullied and getting them to talk things out and come up with a solution on how both parties should and can treat one another!! But all in all this was brilliantly done, shout VP Harris and I love you❤🎉 All the best
