Who are the directors of Delancey?
Delancey is a privately owned company led by Jamie Ritblat, Paul Goswell, and Stafford Lancaster. It has a long-standing, cohesive senior team with over 15 years of experience in the business. Since its inception, Delancey and its management team have been responsible for the acquisition, development, management, and sale of real estate investments with a total value exceeding £20 billion.
Who started Delancey Street?
The organization began by taking residents into a small apartment in San Francisco run by ex-felon John Maher. Instead of following a traditional non-profit model, they chose an extended family model, with those who could work contributing their salaries. Mimi Silbert, with a doctorate in Criminology and numerous professional experiences, became the “head chef” and “head of construction”. Within two years, they purchased their first building and had 80 residents, all learning, teaching, and helping each other.
The first home they bought was the former Russian Consulate located in San Francisco’s poshest neighborhood, Pacific Heights. They formed a “Not In My Backyard” battle with neighbors worried about crime and property values. They patrolled the neighborhood, renovated the mansion, and sold raffle tickets with the promise “not to move next door to you”. By 1977, the battle was finally settled.
When they moved from Pacific Heights to their newly self-built home on the waterfront, Mayor Feinstein offered support at every level. She turned over the first shovel of dirt at their groundbreaking, and in 1990, they completed construction of an expanded and centralized home on the waterfront. This pioneered a new neighborhood in San Francisco, South Beach, which covered an entire city block and included street level retail stores, a highly acclaimed public restaurant, a screening room, a café bookstore and art gallery, dwelling units housing about 500, and a vast array of educational and recreation facilities for the residents.
This was an unprecedented vocational training program, providing over 300 formerly unemployable drug addicts, homeless people, and ex-felons in Delancey Street with skills in the building trades, purchasing, contracting, computer, and accounting services. City officials were so proud that upon completion of the complex, they renamed a section of First Street – Delancey Street.
