Did Obama’S Immigration Policies Cause Parents And Children To Be Separated?

The Obama and Trump administrations operated under the same immigration laws, but the “zero tolerance” policy that separated children from their parents was not new. Critics of the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy claim that it was not Barack Obama’s policy. The Trump administration had a 2018 policy that led to the separation of over 5,500 children from their parents by immigration officials at the border.

The Trump administration intentionally separated thousands of migrant children from their parents at the southern border in the spring. To track down the parents of children in their care, they would scour American prisons and immigration detention centers, using clues from social media or tips from friends inside the government. Immigration advocates and former Obama administration officials say this is not true. The Obama administration detained families together.

Trump repeated a false claim to reporters, wrongly blaming the Obama administration for instituting a policy in which children were separated. After criticism of the policy, Trump blamed its introduction on President Obama and the Democrats. The best way to describe Donald Trump’s current policy toward families crossing the US-Mexico border is that he just went from being much more like Obama.

  • Based on some of the comments, it would seem compassion and decency have all but left the human condition. These people flee their countries because their countries are kept from achieving the type of economic success that a lot of Western Nations have. Company’s profit off the labor of poor people in other countries and pay them at a fraction of what their profits are from the production. All of that coffee that so many people drink, including myself, drink it and think nothing of where it comes from and who sees the profits. If you’re exploited for your labor and see that, even if you illegally over stay your working visa, that you’ll be making more money in the United States than in your own country, wouldn’t you leave? When you’re in poverty, you do not have the luxury of time and “doing things right.” Stop the lies. Stop the dehumanizing. These are people who think and feel and to pretend that they’re not, and to also pretend that one of the many reasons they arrive here aren’t partially our own nation’s fault, then you’re not just actively denying a basic human response called compassion, but you’re also choosing to ignore the economical and institutional reasons that people flee their country.

  • Honduras has one of the highest murder rates in the world and gangs have also infiltrated El Salvador causing devastating violence. Many of these families qualify as refugees but the legal system denies them due process due to a strategic shortage of federal immigration judges. Congress blocked the approval of more immigration judges for years.
