Say David, Im traumatized about my youth, I remember those days, I became a christian when I heard a promise from GOD to make us young again. So here I am now, rejoicing for that day to come, I will also sing, GOD bless you DAVID and the bands member too. What a speach ah,😊, Young again, Nobody can beat that.
My Dad bought this song for me by mistake..both “magic” & “killer queen” were on the same EMI label & the shop assistant got them mixed up, but i kept it because I’d heard it & it was such a great song anyway! Thanks so much for taking the time to go through the chords David, that’s a rarity indeed! 😊👍🎵🎶🎵
Update – I now know how to play ONE song on my son’s electric guitar – Magic. Unfortunately, the golden voiced eldest son left home shortly after and it is not so much fun playing it when you can’t sing for peanuts. THEN – wonder of wonders – my youngest son starts singing from the next room – “Oh ho ho it’s magic” – yipee! He knows it and he”s just thirteen. And he can sing, too. Thank you for the happiness of this singalong in my home. Any other guitar tutorials would be very welcome. You are a natural teacher, you know.
Hey David, Thank You for being Part of the sound track of my childhood . I know I speak for many of my generation when I say ever time I hear “Magic” I’m transported for a brief moment to a happy simpler time in my life. I appreciate when an artist of your stature takes the time to show those who are looking for the guidance in trying to play their music makes a article such as this one. I only wish more artists would follow your lead. Thank You, Pat U. Lake Ronkonkoma LI NY
Never in my wildest imagination could I have believed that 40 years after I heard a song on the radio–one of my favorites–I’d be looking at a computer screen and perusal the lead guitarist and singer describe and play the chords of his song. Truly amazing. And so wonderful that David Paton is so humble and down to earth as to help out his fans who are trying to play his music.
Like teenagers all over the world in 1975-6 I couldn’t get enough listening to “Magic”. I was only 15 and I had a summer job @ the Seattle Center. Where I was there was a radio tuned to the top 40 station of the day KJR and I had it tuned to that station and if someone changed it, I changed it back on my shift! Just so I could hear “Magic”!!!
I also just saw your cover of Elenor Rigby on acoustic with Mr Wakeman on keys. Absolutely brilliant. That’s the first time I realized you were such an incredible guitar player and not just an amazing bass player. Even more of a reason you are in the same category as Paul McCartney. Master of singing, songwriting and multi-instrumentalist. You are probably one of the most underrated musicians ever. When I was younger listening to The Alan Parsons Project, I never realized you were a part of it. Now I know why that music was so amazing as well. American radio and media never gave you enough credit or did you justice. What a shame.
I just slated a guy on YouTube who thought you were playing the wrong chords! Unbelievable as if you would get the chords to your own song wrong! Thanks for all your music David, I’ve been catching up on some of the old Pilot stuff lately, it was amazing at the time it came out but hearing it again just reminds me how great the songs and the band were. God bless you sir and please put some UK shows on, preferably in Glasgow !!!
As one comment already made, how sporting of you to show what the chords should be like from the man who wrote it,and to listen to it time and time again, brings back great memories of that time.Fancy showing how January” SHOULD ” be played 🤗,Thanks for making your contribution to the seventies music, sorry David, but I must add…..iwas really jealous of your good looks,my girlfriend at the time was crazy over you,but that’s another story.thank you again for fond memories.
Like anyone who is great with a guitar, you make it look so easy– in 2015 and just like you did decades ago. But when you break it down you see the engineering of the composition along with the physical skill associated with playing it cleanly. Thanks so much for taking the time and showing everyone, excellent!
Glad tae be here, David, here’s my own wee story to be told: you were born exactly on the same day as my aunt Shiona was, you’re from Edinburgh, she’s from Ayr. One of the many reasons why I feel such a bond between my world and yours. Apart from being a MASSIVE Alan Parsons Project fanatic. Keep Scotland rockin’! 😉
I think its great that surviving great professional musicians and singers from years ago can clarify on the correct chords of their songs.Nothing worse than tons of personal interpretations of the great songs with the wrong guitar chords and keys posted all over Youtube. Thanks David for your time to show us your great song with the correct chords.
Thank you David, for teaching the chords of your song. I love it magic, it was my favorite song when I was in Junior High school in Mexico City, in 1974. That song was very popular in Mexico City. The same January was very popular and I like to much, I have the single of Pilot 45 rpm. Your song bring me much memories from that age. I was 14 years old one of the most beautiful ages when people fall in love with the first love in their life. Thank you for your music it’s the best.
From the Dominican Republic, I want to say thank you so much for sharing! very generous of you to show how to play this song the way you arranged it and the way it was intended to be played, very humble of you to do that, had not seen any of my favorite musicians doing that (until now). You sir have my respect!!
Dear David Paton, it is very admirable of you to make this article and teach others how to play your brilliant tunes. It certainly had an effect on me… the music began to grow on me and so I decided to cover it with my band. You can see the result in my website if you wish (I’d be very honored if you did!). I’m far from being as great a singer as you are, but I hope my tribute is good enough somehow. Long live Pilot’s legacy! Peace~
Thanks so much for this, David…agree with above comment..how amazing to get rios straight from the artist himself..and what an amazing song this is…loved it since hearing it on the radio as a kid, I must have been 8 years old…now if o ly my voice was as good as yours to get up to those high notes😣🤯😅
Never actually tried playing Magic, but I have enjoyed hearing you do it literally hundreds of times. Thank you. Should I ever try playing it, I will first refer back to this instructional article to refresh my memory on that one rather odd chord. I always knew there was a unique chord there. 🙂 I have an old Fender 12-string in the living room on a guitar stand right now. My wife found it for me at the Country Music Store here in Texarkana several years ago for my 46th birthday. It had been there through more than one change of management at that store, just hanging from a guitar hook on a column there in the store. The manager I purchased it from did not know any history on the guitar at all. I had been searching for a good-sounding easy-fretting 12-string. This one has a rather obvious (ugly) but effective bridge repair in its murky past, but it sounds and plays better than any other 12-string I found in more than two years searching, so I bought it for the unbelievably low price of $200 cash. My point in telling you all this is: That old Fender seems to make up its own chords from time to time. I have played chords on it that I never found on any of my other guitars. Hey, thank you for you life time of work, giving joy to others with your songs. Maybe we can pick and grin together some time. You can play my son’s bass and he can hop on one of our 6-strings or some keys, and I’ll do my best to scorch out some correct notes on one of my electrics. Music is life. Thank you again, good Sir, for giving your life to music.
You do it really good, i never seen a artist show and teach their song before, it make me feel so good, i know this song for a very long time and i didnt even remember it until i was reminded, the first time i see this song is as pop song of teenager at our generation i like it at that time but just something like oh sound good, yeah that is i was smaller, and i like pop music at that time to, but i didnt listen to pop anymore, i think it is 5-6 years, and i like rock since 5-6 ago, yeah at that time too and days by days the more i listen the more i influenced by it, first i just know punk rock, yeah you know, atually i know jazz and blues from long ago, but it seem i influenced by it at the same time i know ounk rock, and then classic rock, then progressive rock, yeah like you see, even art rock, like you see it changing day by day, it influence me and from then on… Til a few days ago i was remined this song… and you know what i still not get the name so i searching “it magic you know” and then it dissappeared… your song… then i like wow so i remember this name…. and yesterday when i hear it at the oroginal song, yeah yesterday is the first time i listen “magic” in original, and i seem like “oh so it is a rock song from 75”, you know… and and then after i heard your song and go outside the room and take the guitar and play that song, could you believe that, i play it chord, i was trying to play it’s chord, yeah once again music influence for me, it inspire me, then i played what i hear yeah by ear i play by ear and i havent learnt any class of,usic before or get any teacher, i played by ear, i learned by mysefl yeah the basic, i alway go around the basic music theory by myself and dont have any book or something like that, sometime before it is just a few google searching about a liltle music theory, think there is something that i need to know, really have to know, before i really learning the basic music theory, then i alway see something that weird in music, something that i need to thinking about the basic, it is just like “ok i have to know what is this, how this is, .
David, I have loved this song since it came out. I just recently got back into it about 2 months ago and now its become a staple in my playlist. I am a guitarist, and I have already learned the bass part to this song, which is amazing in its own right. I just came across your article for the guitar chords, and I will admit, I was not expecting this. What amazing chord structures you have used. I’ve got it now. I can’t wait to try and jam it out. Do you still sing? Would love to hear a article of you doing this song now. That would be great. Thanks alot for this article. You posted that you would do a bass line article. I haven’t looked yet, but I hope you have. Thanks so much for the great music man….
Thanks David for the correct chords. I have been playing it close in our duo, but not correct. Im missing the Em 9th (just playing an Em) at the end of the second bar and then missing the C#m7 b5 at the end of the 3rd bar totally (been playing Am all the way through that bar) Doh!! need to now get unused to playing what i have been doing for years and start playing the correct ones. Thanks again mate. Best wishes. Dave
It’s a quite neat progression of chords (with some less-than-conventional ones). It looks as though – while I initially thought that 3rd chord was an Em7 with a 9 – what is really happening is that he’s muting the 4th string (effectively removing the 7th and making it the Em with the 9). It’s a good sound.
Hi David, Nice one thanks. By the way were you ever offered to Tour with Ringo’s All Starr band? He tends to have musicians that had monster hits in the 70’s and 80’s that you might not get to a chance see that often, and they get do a solo slot of their big hits. January and Magic would be perfect and excellent with that backing band!
