As someone on the spectrum and having had 10 interviews the past six months for fulfilling and good paying jobs but not being selected and having to resort to working the same type of minimum wage, thankless job I did 30 years ago when I had no professional experience is disheartening to say the least. My biggest dream is to one day have an opportunity to work a job where I can actually be mentally engaged, where I can feel a sense of freedom from my depression and anxiety, and where I can one day have the confidence to feel like I am someone worthy. As a farmer I can tell you that the farming industry is a very hard demanding job where you are exposed to the sun, pesticides, herbicides, nemacides, fungicides, fertilizers 90+ hour work weeks many months of the year, you dont see your family as much as you would like, people acuse of being government subsidized when knowing nothing about that subject, your livelihood is at the complete mercy of the weather which we have no control over. Forced to use watering practices that are bad for the environment but with no other option you try to ignore it while at the same time having regulations that do nothing but make things harder but do nothing to protect the environment we live in. The paper work and ffa office visits and the loans and equipment providers all a pain with many having low credit access and the only way to make money is to sell crop futures unless you have done well and have a large amount of cash on hand. Not to mention the suicide rate which I believe is 3 times higher than the average person in the US alone due to the stress and the ultimate shame of potentially ruining a long family legacy. My husband is disabled, I have a 3 year old. I live just outside Boston and I work at a major university as a staff member. I am working DoorDash and InstaCart while living homeless in a van with my wife and daughter. These are not jobs for people with depression. They pay slave wages. As someone who works a regular office job I can 100% relate. I have no idea what I even accomplished after a working day, just emails, SAP and stuff. I kind of like my job but i hate the people i deal with. I feel like I’m constantly fixing the mistakes of people from other teams (my team is sort of like the jack of all trades because everything the company does in the country goes through us one way or another). There’s also been loads of situations where someone wants to do something, i say it’s not going to work only for me to be ignored until it turns out it didn’t work. The opposite also happens where someone or my whole team will overcomplicate a task, I’ll tell them a straightforward way to do it, I’ll get ignored and it always turns out where my solution is correct. Had one time my manager and the guy above him (2 levels above me) were telling me how they were planning on doing something, i pitched an easier, less complicated way. Eventually the big boss (3 levels above me) who’s pretty much the boss of the company in my country (it’s an international company) got involved in a discussion and said i was right. I absolutely hate dealing with the messes i clean up, I’ve only been at the company a year and i already have a better understanding of our products work and how they function than a solid 90% of the people i work with

Farmers dont have to be around bosses and coworkers. They work from home, so no commute. They are probably working the same hours every day for the most part, so they can stay on consistent schedules and routines. They are getting exercise, sunlight, and fresh air. Many of them work with goofy animals. They probably get motivation and fulfillment from the fact that their work serves a very important purpose. Being in the country is a lot more peaceful than the city. Farming is very, very physically demanding, but it seems to lack a lot of the stressors of a formal job. Makes sense

I have worked for a state funded University for nearly 23 years. I have two years to go to get my pension and insurance for the rest of my life. I admire Japanese companies which are run from bottom up where the frontline workers are respected and are given chance to decide where the company will go. In my company there is many issues I have to deal with that could be prevented If the people above me actually cared about real problems and not chasing fake metrics on excel table and polishing minor details.
Former carpenter turned lawyer here. I was WAY WAY WAY healthier as a carpenter, even putting aside the fact that I was younger. When you’re a lawyer, if you’re not at your desk it’s not a billable hour. Your physical health turns to crap from the job. You also can’t plant an orchard of law then watch it grow. I’m planting a walnut orchard with my dad right now and it’s probably my favorite “work” project going on right now. Another problem is that being a lawyer has expenses tied to it that aren’t real, but you feel them because of expectations. No one expects a farmer to buy suits and a Mercedes, so he doesn’t have the pressure to pay for that. I stick to property insurance law because it’s close enough to construction that when I roll in a pickup and cargo pants, it’s fine. I could go on but there are so many ways a tradesman life is better than a white collar professional life BUT I have a broken vertebrae from the tradesman life that I’d likely never have from the white collar life. There’s a lot of trade off and I’ve done both so I can speak to both.
The suffering we experience at our jobs has nothing to do with the job itself. We have a faulty perception, and unless we correct the errors that reside in our perception, we’ll continue to despair. Because our psyche cannot adapt to a job without conscious input. Whenever we make a move, for example, we can say ‘yes’ to it. Consciously. If it’s not a conscious ‘yes,’ we can’t adjust to our job. The moment we engage consciously with our job, the less resistance we have. All we must do is figure out a way to reduce that suffering — the awful mood we experience at the job. In other words, the suffering we experience at our job is a spiritual issue. Only generous souls will attain greatness, and blessed is the one who understands what I’m talking about. I wish everyone could figure out this issue; we all deserve better lives that are full of bliss and enjoyment.
Try being an over the road truck driver. No matter how crappy your job is, you can at least go home when your day is done. For us, after working a 13 – or 14-hour shift, we have to find somewhere to park, which is nearly impossible after 6 pm since all the trucks stops and rest areas are full by then. Only to have a 10 hour break, which gives us just enough time to grab something to eat, then get right to bed. Then we got to get up the next morning and do it all over again. Day after day after day. We miss holidays, birthdays, weddings, graduations, you name it. Plus, we have no weekends to look forward to. We drive until our log hours run out, and sometimes they don’t.
I’m a bus School Bus drive, didn’t pay enough so I applied for the shop mechanic position. Four or five years ago, I started considering suicide. Just having to deal with someone elses kids, who threaten to kill you and just make the job difficult. Add on the fact that it only 1400 for nine months. Now factor in one month is no pay and two of those months is less than 600 dollars. Now even more reason. My mom thinks I’m just be stupid, being black does that. Nothing has changed though and the thought pops up, when the days become shitty. Oh I do make more money now, I guess there’s that silver lining. I will say just cause you have a job and are alive, aren’t good reasons you should be happy. If the job is the source of your misery. Then it defeats the purpose. Oh and I tried getting another job, but people where I live are honestly discriminatory.
Ok, with that cricket game, letting pirates that then legitimately buy it keep their progress is actually pretty nice and generous. Smart, too, because it gives extra encouragement to actually buy it beyond just not having to deal with all those issues from the pirated version. Gives them more reason to buy a legit copy rather than just dropping it over this. There’s also just a level of respect to it. Basically throwing the pirates a bone and saying “yeah, you pirated our game, but we’re all human, we’re not gonna treat you too harshly or demonize you too much, we get why people do this, we’ll work with ya.”
2:54 Fun fact: In 3D modeling, Normals are non rendering indicators that show which side of a polygon are outward facing (shaded) the opposite side would not render. So they are not something that should be shaded or rendered. 100% a troll by the developers, and getting pirates to screenshot their ID is brilliant.
My brother once got a cracked version of Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. He got mad when you went to the oblivion planes, and these T-Rex type monsters would just slaughter him. Then when the game reloaded the checkpoint, his stats were 0, and MORE T-Rex creatures showed up. He was so mad, and it was pure comedy gold.
In good old Sacred, when you finish Chapter 1 and are about to start Chapter 2, you need to pick up a canister right at your feet to bring water to a dying man in the desert. However, in pirated versions, the canister was missing. The players, myself included went mad searching after the canister as at this point, you are already well into the game. Genius.
One of my favorite anti-pirate feature was in Star Flight. Anytime you launched you had to enter a code from a wheel. IF you entered a wrong code your space ship was eventually stopped by the space patrol and blown away. It got funny if you had certain artifacts on board you become invincible and you could destroy the police but they would come over abd over until you entered the correct code. IT was a good source of materials. It was worthless since most people came up with the same way of defeating the code.
I had an original copy of the original Civilization installed on my dad’s IBM PC in the 90s. I eventually swapped the game for another with a friend but 2-3 weeks later got the itch to play again. The anti-piracy measure was that a rival world leader would denounce you as a usurper and you would have to prove your worthiness by answering a question, with the answer of course being in the manual. I had played the game so much by this point that I had memorised them all! I did later give a deliberate wrong answer to see what would happen. I was overthrown and executed.
Number one makes me smile every time i see it. Every other anti-piracy measure is just to make a game unplayable and annoy the player, but this one is extremely clever (granted it could only really work with that game, but the fact that they realised that and implemented it is nothing short of brilliant).
Sid Meier’s Pirates! has to be among the earliest examples of this. During your campaign you would be randomly asked to identify the flag of an incoming ship, the names of which could be found in the manual. If you got it wrong the game would turn incredibly difficult. Your crew would always be disgruntled and eager to mutiny, you would plunder fewer valuables and resources, and the wind would constantly blow strongly in the opposite direction of where you were trying to go.
In The Talos Principal, I pirated it BC there was no demo, and after the first small set of Intro Puzzles, it would lock you in the elevator, and auto save on you. I remember thinking it’s a bug, replaying the beginning again, just to get locked again. I googled and figured it out fast. But, the intro puzzles and the story had me hooked, I had to buy it 🙂 DEMOS NEED TO MAKE A COMEBACK!
The game dev anti piracy thing is ofc the best fit. That just hits home. Well, to be honest. A huge problem has always been the lack of demos and STEAM is not making it safe enough to try a game before the refund option expires. I wish you could set a stop timer that cancles the game automatically. The other thing I hate about certain games I have purchased but had to get the pirate version of. Are the ones that always need STEAM to be online to start. The WORST part in a game…I don’t have internet and have to take my PC to the city to download and update. So I can only ever buy a hard copy or play it once online. So yeah, some devs just don’t think of people without internet. At least now I can afford tethering to my cell to get into games, so that’s an upside. There are advantages and obvious disadvantages to pirated games, the devs certainly deserve to be paid, if you like what you see.
Honestly, as a guy who has pirated games mostly to see if I am going to like them or not, I appreciate these tricks and find them hilarious. I don’t know how many people will remember this, but companies have done the reverse of this as well. Westwood Studios leaked a version of Tiberian Sun that was pretty much the full game, minus all of the article content. Doing this bumped the sales up big time.
Seeing some of these makes me wonder if there’s some “major, game breaking glitches” for games that are actually anti-piracy measures that haven’t been revealed as such yet. Sometimes you hear about such things, major glitches that are ruining the games for some people but a lot of people in the comments of articles and articles about it have never experienced it. What if they are anti-piracy measures and because people obviously aren’t coming forward about it, they haven’t figured it out yet while the devs haven’t outright admitted it yet?
Great old school (think Commodore 64, Apple II era) one was with Sid Meier and Microprose’s “Silent Service”, a surprisingly fun and engaging WW2 submarine simulator. The game was on 5.25″ floppy disks, and the manufacturing process encoded them with a sequence using specialized hardware which a typical Commodore or Apple user’s drive could not reproduce. Thus, upon failing to detect that special checksum recipe, you could be in game in a sweet spot about to fire a bunch of torpedoes at a juicy-looking enemy convoy full of tankers, cargo ships, etc., when suddenly ALL of them would transform into Japanese “kaibokan” ships, basically destroyer escorts, that would immediately home in on your position and depth charge the hell out of you relentlessly. Deviously effective!!
Stormworks was pretty cool, the game would work as normal then after around 20 minutes it would just constantly rain down fish making the game unplayable. The devs made it that way as sort of a demo or by “giving them something then taking it away” as they put it. It was definitely worth trying out because raining fish was pretty funny to see.
In the Ravenfield modding scene, some modders have made their own anti-piracy scripts which end up replacing every single texture in the game to a random PNG of their choosing. JakeCoin being the most famous, I’ve dabbled in the script too while testing around – it’s definitely silly fun. I believe you could also make it to where certain users couldn’t use the mod, the one I know of was a guy who refused to pay for a commission he said he’d pay for. So the guy made it public for everybody, but the script activated for that one guy in particular.
I mean… Devs could also just give us demos like back in the day when we could rent a game for a day or two as a trial run to decide if we wanted to buy it or not. I’ve probably pirated every game I’ve bought outside of a couple that I snagged right on release day just to try them and decide. Steam is great with their 2hr refund window. But a fair number of games require more than 2hrs of play before you really see the full scale the game has to offer.
I’ve had a problem with a game I actually legally owned. It was Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth and I installed it on my old PC, where it ran smoothly. Years later I then installed it on my new computer and there it suddenly had a “bug” where when I went into the story and had Frodo and the others start going into the mines of Moria, they all just.. died on the spot. Had to google that to find out that it’s the anti-piracy thing. I am still not sure why it happened; I played with the original CD. u-u’
Ahhh, I’m reminded of the first Witcher, which used a novel (at the time) method of putting key information on a secondary hidden layer of the physical disc such that it could not be read by the software used to make the .iso files. Some of the hidden layer included entire NPCs required to progress past the first town, rendering the pirated version little more than a bloated demo (which was actually fine and the standard protection at the time was SecuRom iirc, which we all hated because it behaved like a rootkit)
Developers: thanks for playing the game Me who pirated the game 🤝 Well, those practice is already gone extinct in article games scene because hacker is already smart enough not only crack the game also remove the DRM completely from the game just like they did with assassin creed origin where you get much better version than legit version …
I once pirated Shadow of Mordor and somewhere in the game (the mission where you get the power to control others) I got stuck, none of the character’s movement worked, much less I could pause or enter the character menu. Not to mention the constant boos that started to appear and repeat themselves in a loop. Coincidentally, the game was on sale, so I bought it and started playing again lol
Hopefully the piracy detection principles / algorithm are dependable, because accidentally trolling actual customers would backfire severely. I like the Serious Sam scorpion, the drunken mode and the chicken mod best, though i would have like for them to be a bit more mature like the scorpion making surprise appearance, inflicting a drunk debuff if stung while attracting a horde, or the weapons to fire chickens only if you need bullets the most like being down to 10% health, possibly with them harassing you afterwards on top of it. This way those become more of a laugh, which I believe to be better than just being crude or cruel.
I remember that anti piracy thing in Arkham Asylum. I was a poor kid and I pirated games. I managed to get past the grapple hook thing, by using a trainer to enable noclip and just float to the next part. Also I remember in Assassin’s Creed 2 there was a certain mission that would just never show up, and you couldn’t progress. Think I replayed the game like three times up to that point, before realizing the issue.
The only one I know from my childhood is Black and White 2 with kids never growing up. I was suprised how I don’t have enough food even tho I doing everything I can to have it, while also not having adults to assign to be farmers. Then I saw a big line of kids running around and I fully understand what happen.
Back when I was a kid and didn’t have the money to buy the game I wanted, piracy was really the only option I had. My parents always thought gaming was something bad for my growth, and since I live in India, buying games at U.S. prices was just unthinkable for me. Over here, there were actual stalls where you could buy pirated games and movies. Finding a legit store to buy them was rare, and with the pirated games being 10 to 20 times cheaper, that was the only way for me back then. Now, I don’t pirate my games. It’s not because I have the money now; it’s more that I don’t game as much, and I’ve got important stuff on my PC/laptops that I can’t risk with some cheeky virus from pirated games. But if I want to play a game, I buy it now. So, just wanted to say, not all pirates are douchebags or unappreciative of the devs or out to steal from them. Sometimes, it’s just the circumstances.
There was also original Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (original ARMA), where the computer AI would start cheating progressively more and more. Sniping you from from a mile away whilst moving. Your helicopter controls being out of order, your gun using more ammunition than what’s being fired, etc.
So, I might be a bit radical, but: What about making pirate versions and cheat-influenced versions of a game make your pc crash, or even lock you out of it in some way. Just imagine: pirates after an hour of playing get banned from thier own pc for a whole day with a massage that reads “go think about what you did” it would be halarious.
Pls make a article about article game is highly expensive in other countries. You talk about piracy where u r in US/UK which article games are terribly cheap for your income. Come to india and Asian countries we earn 20,000inr and the new games are like 4,000inr for pc/Xbox games. 4500inr for ps5 games. 6000inr for Nintendo switch games. IA single game almost 30-40% of our monthly income. If they sell it for cheaper then everyone wil definitely buy for it. Remember we made the highest revenue for pubg and free fire where the in store items are cheap not like ur US Fortnite
I come from a relatively low-income country, for many people here buying a game at full price would often mean spending 20+ % of your monthly salary, which simply is not going to happen. Especially if you are a kid asking your parents for it, and absolutely not if like me you are the 5th of 5 kids. So yeah, I pirated pretty much all the games I played until I was 19 or so (plus there were people selling pirated games on the street and even under the table in legit stores). Today, I make a very decent amount of money (for my country anyway), and I have bought a copy of pretty much every game I have played (and enjoyed) in the past 🙂
Except lots of people DO pirate games before buying them on pc. I had a buddy who would always pirate game before buying it just to make sure it ran properly on his system, but also as an alternative to a demo so he could see if he also liked the game before committing to a purchase. Because you might’ve noticed, but most companies don’t do demos anymore.
the Talos Principle had an elevator that refused to function. Pirates patched it though after they found out about it. Same as the Arkham Asylum measures, they made a fix for it. Both games I bought later. The Talos Principle also didn’t have any computer dialog in the pirated version so it made it way less fun and somewhat confusing at times. Definitely worth buying for the dialog being included.
You forgot Raft where the developers implemented a way to block pirates from progressing. Its after you get to that domed city like level with the crane puzzle. The crane puzzle was designed to glitch out and be impossible to complete should the game detect any piracy going on thus making it impossible for pirates to beat the game. Effectively it turned all pirated copies into a much longer demo build of the game. This is a lesser known anti piracy measure but its not as trollish as other stuff since its the devs basically saying “enjoy the longer illegal demo version but please buy our game”.
I basically pirated every Arkham game (before I had disposable income and they became dirt cheap to buy) and never came across these things. But I did have a glitch that probably would have been a great addition. In Arkham City my PC struggled to run it and I forced DX9 mode. This caused the detective vision to not be able to see enemies unless you were standing still. It was a bit of a nuisance even if it didn’t make the game unplayable. Thinking now that be a cool pirate troll; esp as I posted in places about the issue. Though the game is so well designed, I still got through the whole thing with the limitation and it was still really fun.
I remember once on the past, playing a pirated copy of half life 2, there was this part of the story where you have to use these turrets to help you in a place kinda like a prison with cells and such, I remember being extremely hard to pass it was soo difficult I guess since the game was pirated I could never pass that mission and then after buying the orange box on steam and playing it again I could beat it just fine
Okay a quick rant about having to play cracked games for some people: First the price, 60$ in other countries is like the triple or even more, people can’t afford to pay that kind of money for a SINGLE article game Second, some countries don’t even have a legit and convenient way to buy games ( like steam for example ) due to the lack of paypal and other payment methods. So please go easy on the unfortunate gamers, not everyone is as privileged as y’all, some people save for years to buy a mid-range gaming pc and literally have nothing left for games, so for them pirated games are a god send and i don’t think it will hurt these giant gaming corporations.
First experience I ever had with a pirated game block was with mirrors edge. Normally, I didn’t pirate games but mirrors edge at the time was not my style of game, not the type of game I usually enjoyed so I wanted to try it out before purchasing the full thing. I remember thinking what a stupid game it was because it was almost impossible, no, it was definitely impossible to jump over this one area in the beginning and you would always die and now I know why that was (well not now I learned of the pirate blocking of the game a couple years after it but anyway)
I had that Sims 4 glitch for pirated games but mine wasnt pirated. I had bought it straight from EA and had proof of purchase, email confirming, and an active account with them. They ended up giving me a whole new digital copy of the game. Kinda sucked that I lost all my saves but years later I still play the game and dont have any of those issues anymore.
pirate games, I tried batman arkham, it’s not true that you have the listed bugs. Mirrors edge, same, played the whole game, I didn’t have any bug, not even the one mentioned. GTA IV, the same, pressed several times, no bug, what’s more, now I just have a pirated version of GTA IV (the pirated installation requires a manual entry in the windows registry), I mostly use that installation to mod the game (I have two purchased accounts for GTA 5). Sirius Sam 3, I’m going to download the pirated version right away and try it, although I don’t expect such a problem, because you weren’t right about the previous three, or people simply don’t know how to register a pirated game. Only for Crysis Warhead I agree with bullet-chickens xD ps: and maybe I just learned everything about GTA, when it comes to modding and hacking, I had a FiveM server, RP, about 400 players played on my server, maintained the server myself and made custom scripts, MLO, vehicles…
How did they put these things in the game for pirates? Pirated versions are identical to original with perhaps online functionality removed or disabled. So only way I can think of is they released the game with these bugs then on release hour made mandatory update that patch these bugs before allowing players to play the game. If that’s the case then it would take the pirate groups literally hours if not less to update their own release versions with said updates.
I played them and had no issues other than i tried to download call of duty black ops 3 back then and got a virus with my smart brain 😂 i was able to get rid of it but the computer was getting old so i didnt use it long after anyways, i ended up burning it up in a fire and kept the hard drive that i never used for anything afterwards.
Beach Head 2 for the commodore 64 would give you a speech, trying to shame you if you made an unsuccessful copy of the game, instead of launching normally- basically saying how the developers worked really hard on it and you should buy it.. Also, on Command & Conquer Generals, if 2 players playing on the same LAN have the same serial numbers, all the guys drop dead at the same time in the game after playing for a few minutes.
