Starting in 2023, the IRS has issued new guidelines requiring sales on credit card processing sites or online marketplaces to be reported. If you regularly sell items online with the intent to make a profit, you will need to report that as self-employment income. However, you must also report all your expenses and deductions to offset that income, including the original cost of the items. The resulting profit will be the amount on which you owe both self-employment taxes (15.

3 to cover both social security and Medicare contributions) and income tax (depending on your total income bracket). If you intend to continue in this side gig and earn more money in the future, you may want to consider quarterly estimated tax payments. These payments are only necessary if you expect to owe $1000 or more in taxes on your self-employment income. There are penalties for underpayment if you don’t pay the taxes you owe throughout the year. Who pays better Poshmark or Mercari?

Mercari is a free app that allows sellers to sell items across various categories, including home decor, furniture, and accessories. It offers lower prices, making it accessible to a wider range of buyers. Mercari also takes a low commission, taking only 10 percent, which means sellers can pocket more of their profits.

The app has recently improved its uploading/listing process, allowing sellers to upload 12 pictures at once, move them around, and instantly improve lighting. Private chat with buyers is also available, enabling better negotiation and custom bundle creation. Promotions can be sent privately or publicly, boosting sales.

However, Mercari has some cons, such as a challenging user experience, high shipping costs, slow payouts, no sharing feature, lower price thresholds, and limited customer service. Buyers may find it difficult to navigate the app, and sellers may not take the time to take well-lit, attractive photos of their merchandise. Shipping costs can be a disadvantage for both buyers and sellers, as they may have to pay for shipping themselves or list it for the buyer to pay.

Mercari’s earnings are not released until the buyer receives, rates, and accepts your package, which can take days or weeks to see funds in your account. Additionally, there is no sharing feature, meaning your item gets lost in the millions of other listings. Lower price thresholds may also affect profits, as Mercari is not a designer resale platform like Poshmark.

Despite these drawbacks, Mercari is an excellent option for sellers who want to make quick cash without spending hours on sharing and taking stylistic photos. The app offers more freedom to list odds and ends around your house, not just clothes, making sellers feel less restricted. However, profits may not be as high on Mercari as on other platforms like Poshmark.

  • This article was a lot of work! Thank you for doing this. Two mentions…on Eileen Fisher, I don’t find smaller sizes do that well anymore. Some beautiful tops sell for $15 that a few years ago would have sold for $50. The plus sizes, however, are a different story- they sell and sell really well. The other brand I find does really well is Johnny Was. Again, bigger sizes sell quickly but all of I sells well. Again, very informative article and I’d love to see more like this

  • I found a Spell snake pattern slit maxi skirt. Sold for $90 in a week. True vintage Levis bring some serious money. I found a denim Levi fitted pearl button shirt with the steer tag for $5. Think John Travolta in Urban Cowboy. Well it was in the women’s blouse rack and I grabbed it. It was almost like new except that it had some paint on the sleeve and some crushed pearl buttons. Well I asked my friend what she thought and she just sneered at it. I bought it anyway because of what i had learned searching it online. By the end of the night I had an offer for $1,000 and $1,500 and sold it for $1,500! That day funded my eBay inventory purchases. You just never know. We need to trust our intuition!!!! Years later I found an original well done oil landscape painting from early 1800’s.. I could tell it was old. It was professionally patched on the back of the canvas. Its worth some real money but Im keeping that one!!

  • You are a peach! We (your viewers) all appreciate you and your content SO much! This was one of the both most informative, and yet also simple to follow articles that I have seen, as far as brands-to-sell go. Been following for a lil’ while now, but will definitely be checking in more often for articles like these. You ROCK! Keep up the great work and best of luck to ya, Miss! 😊🤞

  • Hi Rebekah, just found you. Haven’t been selling on Posh since 2020. Really enjoyed this, looked up the brands and am inspired that there IS still decent fashion out there. I’m older and used to sew; I find sites like Revolve disgusting and ridiculously expensive. Also like your style of presentation.

  • I have been enjoying your articles for a quite some time because the brands you pickup and sell, no one else talks about them, except the ones you hear all the time (Patagonia, Free People, Dansko, Lilly Pulitzer, etc.). I really enjoy your personality and humor and how much good info you share!! Thank you. I’ve found Patagonia, Free People, DVF, Lilly P., from your list. Things I’ve found and sold but Not on your list: Tommy Bahama, Lauren R Lauren, BDG, Pierre Balmain, Democracy…

  • Thanks for an excellent article. I’m of the age where my daughter wore JNCO jeans in junior high when they first came out. I always marvel at what people find in “the bins.” Where I live there are no bins and the only brand you mentioned that I’ve come across is Eileen Fisher. Maybe a couple others once in a great while. I need to move!

  • This is a cool article… one question..what is the bins? I’m new to this…and have a lot to learn… but, surprisingly, have been doing ok, for a novice …also, do you sell on 3 platforms…if so, how would You rate Poshmark?….I’ve sold many years ago, on Ebay…children’s books( early 2,000’s) and did well….I’m just curious, is Poshmark, Your preference? Thanks, You did a great job 👏

  • Rothy’s shoes. I agree with most of these brands and the few times I have found them, they have been great sales. I would say that alpaca sweaters made in South America can be valuable, similar to wool Scottish or Irish made sweaters. I have an Alexis top and didn’t know anything about it. I bought it for myself, but it didn’t fit. I have it in my store now, it has gotten some low ball offers so maybe the dresses move better or the size isn’t popular (the size is small). I liked hearing your information on it.

  • What a sweetheart you are & thank you so much for giving me hope as I am a long-time vintage clothing dealer but I still go out picking and do have some great scores because i live in the boonies but I may start going to the bins just for fun and I love learning about new brands! I did recognize maybe 10 or so of the ones you mentioned but the others are new to me as I took a long break from thrifting to weed out my inventory and also be sick for awhile lol…. Favorite brands to resell for me mostly in vintage are Yves St. Laurent, Lilly Pulitzer, Diane Fries, Laura Ashley, Landlubber, Flax, Eileen Fisher, Betsey Johnson, 1950s Wrangler, Adrienne Arpel, DVF. Excellent article and thank you so much for your hard work on this! Best from me to you, Deb

  • Love this! I have sold and need to post several pieces from brands on this list! Love Ted Baker. Sold every dress within a week. Just got a NWT leather skirt from them. Fav flips are vintage jackets. Sold a two-tone full length mink chevron coat for $200 that i got for $30 because they thought it wasnt real fur and had lining condition issues. Next was a vintage 60s/70s mohair and wool coat like new. Seriously the best mohair I’ve ever seen as it was soft and not scraggly looking. Sold for $125 in 48hrs on ebay. Bought for $10

  • I’ve noticed my goodwills are marking up their prices for certain brands calling them “boutique” pieces. Is this a typical thing nationwide I wonder? Also, each goodwill I think has a color of the week price tag. And I may be wrong but I know of at least three in my surrounding area that have changed up their price tags in their dresses area for sure. I went to one of the same stores for a month at least one time a week and I swear the price tag colors would be different. They have a ton of dresses that didn’t seem to be selling. I should have taken pictures of the price tags. I found a couple of the sale price tags of the week. And you know how I found them? The dress was shoved or lost in a bunch of other dresses. And the price tag was not showing. I could only find like five at the most and they were all facing the wrong direction. Making it seem suspicious that they were changing the price tags. Is Salvation Army a better place to shop? I have not been to them in years mostly because I don’t notice them as easily as I see the goodwills all over. Thanks. Has anyone had luck with buying on line through their online store? Like I don’t know they might take bids.

  • I just started reselling because I had to go on disability and have to supplement my income. I have been thrifting since high school! I went thrifting one day and came across a The Spell and The Gypsy dress! Did not know the brand it had tags just picked it up cause it was a really pretty boho style dress. When I checked comps I then realized what I had! Love your articles!!! And I have learned a lot and you are very cute!

  • I found Magnolia Pearl in the wild 3yr ago in a small theift shop in ohio! I truly had no idea what it was. It was just a top but by the tag and the way it looked, I knew it had to be something good. it was in great shape for a 1.50$ So I put it in my cart when I got home And looked it up, I about hit the floor.. I listed that top, on all 3of my platforms ebay posh mercari. It was a simple top. I seen the resell value was $100 to $150. So I listed it for a $125. Offers started coming in within 5 minutes; declined all. I sold it for full price on poshmark in one hour!
