Children often amaze their parents, giving them the strength to endure their demands and outbursts. Many parents have a negative self-image that they unknowingly extend to their children, leading to a large number of them consistently favoring one child over another. This can have long-term consequences, as research shows that around 70% of parents do. Parental favoritism can have lasting effects on a child’s self-esteem, emotional well-being, and mental health.
Signs of controlling parents, such as harsh punishment or providing little privacy, can be misconstrued as normal if these behaviors have occurred for generations. Parents may have a preference, but it is usually not who children think it is, and whoever their “favorite” is could impact their health. Families are often the first to notice mental health problems in children due to their intimate involvement in and monitoring of their children’s lives.
AMAZE envisions a world that recognizes child and adolescent sexual development as natural and healthy, where young people everywhere are. Many children think they are older than they are, and parents think their children are younger than they are. This quirk of parenting can lead to children thinking they are older than they are, and parents thinking their children are younger than they are.
AMAZE.org offers free resources to help create an ongoing dialogue with children about topics such as babies, bodies, gender, consent, and consent. For parents or carers of autistic individuals, resources such as information, the NDIS, and support groups can be helpful. Amaze is designed to help kids learn about sexual education, their changing bodies, and positive relationships.
