📹 Fast Fashion Trends: Why We Have To Change Our Fashion Habits | Francisca Niemeyer | TEDxYouth@TBSRJ
From a consumerist’s perspective, Francisca Niemeyer explores the dangers of fast fashion and how to develop your own style.
Why is fashion always changing?
Fashions change due to people’s constant evolution and societal influences. Popular culture, including athletes, musicians, movie stars, social media, and royalty, influences people’s choices in clothing, hairstyles, and the fashion industry’s advertising. Stars of popular culture constantly seek new angles to maintain their popularity, often resulting in new clothing or hairstyles. As a result, people seek out the latest fashions, such as clothing, shoes, and jewelry, to emulate their favorite stars and maintain their popularity. This constant change in fashions is a result of the ever-changing nature of people and the fashion industry.
Why do design trends change?
Design trends are constantly evolving, reflecting the zeitgeist of the moment and influenced by technological advancements, cultural shifts, and evolving user preferences. These trends, ranging from minimalist aesthetics to bold, experimental designs, significantly impact consumer perception. Adobe’s study found that unattractive content or layout can lead to users stopping engaging with a website.
Design trends directly impact how users perceive a brand or product, and staying aligned with current trends can instill relevance and modernity, potentially attracting and retaining a larger audience. User experience is also intrinsically linked to design trends, with 94 of respondents citing design as a reason they mistrusted or rejected a website.
Why is the fashion industry changing?
Consumers are shifting their focus from fast fashion to sustainability, with a survey showing that 87 percent of respondents are willing to change their products and brands if it makes their lives more environmentally friendly. Over 60 percent plan to boycott brands offering unsustainable services. Madewell, a brand that has started a recycling program for denim, plans to have 100 of its fibers sustainably sourced by 2025 and normalize slower shipping times to decrease the overall carbon footprint of online shopping. Resale is another trend brands are adopting to address consumer demand for sustainability, with research showing that online fashion resale marketplaces will more than double between 2021 and 2025.
How do fashion trends come and go?
The lifecycle of a fashion trend consists of five stages: Introduction, rise, peak, decline, and obsolescence. The cycle used to take around 20 years, but now can happen in just months, with the rise, peak, and decline occurring quicker than ever before. Social media has changed the way trends take shape, with particular items or brands becoming trending. When content of a particular item goes viral, admirers want to own it, leading to mass consumption of the same items.
However, this mass purchasing of trending items goes against fashion’s primary goal of encouraging individual expression. As trends spread more rapidly and uniformly, they fail to meet this goal at increasing speed, leading to the creation of tacky and outdated items. Those who draw inspiration from fashion seek to stay ahead of the curve, and the faster they set trends are copied, the quicker they must move on, creating an infinite loop of fashion trends.

Do fashion trends still exist?
Fashion trends are constantly evolving, reviving forgotten styles, and the industry’s personalities are constantly upholding these trends. Paris Fashion Week 2024 promises an unforgettable experience with high-fashion shows, captivating exhibitions, and exciting events. The Secret Garden Collection by Amouage, created in 2016, is dedicated to flowers and gourmand motifs. This year, Love Delight, a fragrance inspired by an oriental bun in honey with cinnamon and cardamom, is added to the floral family.
Meanwhile, Barcelona-based niche brand Ramon Monegal explores the soul of Spanish fragrances with two new perfumes, catering to women who want to express themselves openly and unconventionally through fragrances.
How often does fashion change?
The 20-year rule, which states that fashion follows a cycle that repeats every 20 years, is a key factor in why many trends make a comeback. This rule suggests that people go from “love it” to “hate it” to “meh” before returning to “love it”. However, trends often first appear on people too young to have nostalgic associations. This is because every two decades, a new generation of young adults emerges, experimenting and defining their styles.
They often lean towards clothing styles that feel “new” and “retro” to them, which leads them to watch older series and films, which provide them with a better understanding of the culture and its style. This leads to them wearing trends of the past, which is considered overshooting. The rule suggests that 30 years is not enough, and a decade is not enough.
How and why has fashion changed over time?
As societal values and norms evolve, so too does the fashion industry, adapting to reflect these changes. As individuals undergo changes in their sense of self, their fashion choices also evolve, reflecting the aging process and the human experience.
