Who Selects The Meet Gala Attire?

The Met Gala, an annual event that raises millions for the Costume Institute at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a culturally relevant event that takes place on May 7, 2024. The event cochairs include Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams, Amal Clooney, Rihanna, and Donatella Versace. In 2019, Anna Wintour was chosen as the cochair to raise an astonishing amount of money for the museum.

The theme for the event is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty”, and guests are expected to curate their fashions to match the theme of the annual exhibit, generally in haute couture. Fashion executive Anna Wintour is the co-chair for this year, alongside Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, and Jennifer Lopez.

The theme and dress code are meant to be followed, and some people choose not to attend. The dress code for Monday’s event was “The Garden of Time”, inspired by a 1962 JG Ballard story. Journalist Amy Odell, who has written a biography on the Vogue editor in chief, says all outfits are pre-approved by Wintour before celebrities walk the red carpet and go inside.

In summary, the Met Gala is an annual event that raises millions for the Costume Institute, with the theme and dress code being chosen by Andrew Bolton, the chief curator of the museum.

  • Having watched Jack Edwards’ article where he explains the story the theme is based on, I think some of the grey men’s suits are a reference to the end of The Garden of Time, where the main couple turn to stone. And the bejewelled dresses (especially Elle Fanning’s, designed to look transparent) I think are references to the crystal flowers in the garden

  • 15:16 i actually quite love this look i think it beautifully shows the eternalness and the complexity of time because you can’t tell where one outfit begins and the other ends; the shapes also feel so organic, his tie slightly resembles a rose, and the shape of her dress is very flower-esque which all adds to the garden aspect. no excuse for the calves though, put them away eddy.

  • So, Garden of Time is a story about the upper crust of society using magical flower petals to keep the villagers from killing them by freezing time within the garden. So, some of these outfits are going off the literal theme “garden” and “time” flowers, decay, etc., and others are going off of concepts: high class/vs low class, freezing time, etc., Hugh Jackmans tux actually made A LOT of sense.

  • I wish the Met was more about the fashion than it is. It’s more of a celebrity show off. It should just be models and their designers and the entire team that made it, should be at the ready to talk about thr trials and tribulations of making it. Fashion is art, but the Met is celebrity show and tell, and that breaks my heart.

  • “Omg what is the met gala for” google isn’t appreciated enough “The Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Benefit, is an annual fundraising Festival/gala held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in Manhattan. The Met Gala is popularly regarded as the world’s most prestigious and glamorous fashion event.”
