I’ve accidentally flown my Mavic 2 into different things several times now. Two times trees, one time a building, and one time myself… Each time it managed to surprise me by somehow auto-stabilising instead of falling out of the air, all while sustaining only unexpectedly minor damage. There’s even a article by Destin of Smarter Every Day in which he flew his Mavic Air 2 into a pole, causing a front arm to fold in halfway, and yet it still managed to stay in the air. As a software engineer I was quite amazed when I watched Destin flick the folded front arm back to its extended position while the drone was still in flight. It’s very reassuring, seeing that my drone (or at least, a drone with similar capabilities to mine) is able to handle much rougher treatment without any problems.

As a drone professional and developer this article is garbage, you skip over some very important steps and don’t even cover the fact each drone needs to be tuned for the specific parts it is using. tanks still serve a purpose in modern warfare, however, until reliable anti drone/ATGM technology catches up, theyre just really expensive, really big, targets. when in a war of attrition, cheap killing really expensive eventually adds up. unmanned warfare really is the future of war, and the Ukraine war has shown that its basically here already. its a bad time to be a tanker or infantryman. drone countermeasures will eventually catch up, and then those countermeasures will be countered, so on and so forth. the cycle continues.

This seemed like a good way to hassle the enemy and hopefully land a handgrenade in an open hatch. I’ll answer that question on are they made as well as they say. I was in Berlin Germany as a soldier when the wall came down. I’ve been inside of T-72 tanks and was totally surprised at how little armor they actually had and the antiquated technology that they used. At that time, the T 72 was just one step away from being the most advanced tank that the Soviet union/Russia had in its arsenal. Now that was quite a few years ago, but it was laughable then. I can’t help but think that the new ones, though they may be better, are probably not as badass as they say.

One time use is not an issues. This US$ 500 is so cheap, even compared with small arms. Just to kill single combatan, statistically it needs more than 50.000 rounds cost around US$10.000. Using FPV drones, kill ratio almost 1:1 or maybe more. Since single drone can kill more than 1 person if it hit APC. US$500 / kill is a hell of a deal. Not to mention the value of the target it kill Therefore, near future warfare will be fought by drone. Using current military hardware to fight cheap drone swarm is not sustainable
We have to take out tanks at a “significantly” higher price? That is a gross understatement. I’m no math expert, but wouldn’t the cost be many thousands of percent higher cost for us to take out those tanks with Javelin missiles? Don’t get me wrong. I like Javelin missiles, but I like these drone attacks on tanks better. We need to do everything we can to support Ukraine now, because they share a large border with Russia, and there is likely to be tension in that part of the world for a long time. I think the Ukrainians are up to it. They could be very valuable allies.

And to think, we used to drop homemade poof devices from our RC airplanes and helicopters back in the mid 80’s in Florida. Abandoned and burnt out cars were common in the area we flew, so we got a lot less bored. Shotgun shells, PVC tubes, roofing nails, baby powder and some 5 minute epoxy. Fun times except we did LOS because FPV was not at the level it is today.

Small vehicles watch and destroy drones threat. In ww2 Germans blew up a lot of t34 tanks with very cheap panzerfaust. Even kids and elder can manipulate it.
Great documentary. But i still struggle to understand why tank rounds are so massive for attacking other tanks yet a drone with a few pounds of explosives is able to open up the same tank like a tin can. I understand these tanks are attacked from above but even so, it seems bizarre. Unless we are being lied to here. The footage seems genuine however and Russians are claiming the same type of success with their (larger) drones. If all it took was a few pounds of explosives to wreck a tank, why do anti-tank missiles have to be so heavy?
I would say that the tank’s operators or the operators of the invasion in general are always usually easier to target than their equipment, however…not always because their equipment may be armored, but find the weak point or if it is toting explosives and ammo that can be set off too, rendering the equipment destroyed, or if you can target crews only, go in later a recover the equipment for your cause. The only thing I would like to point out is that changing the FPV frequency of the drone makes it possible to strike despite countermeasures. Now the direction of drones is very, very developed both in Ukraine and in our enemy. Don’t lag behind, learn from Ukrainian officers. We are faced with the fact that our Ukrainian infantrymen, who were trained in the UK, can’t apply most of the tactics taught to them by British instructors. Most of the doctrine is outdated! Even in US doctrine today small kamikaze drones are seen as a toy 🙂 only a dozen of these toys can drive and partially kill a platoon of soldiers.

Life is full of things like that. What’s important is that the aim is true and the charge is appropriate to the armament. Ukraine is very, very good at that and they’ve developed a whole new way of fighting, that keeps personnel at a safe distance. Obviously it’s a nice bonus that it’s cheap, but in the grand scheme of things, not a game changer. They’re not russian Orcs, so even if it was expensive, they’d try to preserve their troops lives.
$400/500 is not too much expensive considering the Price of Per DIY Drone or Quade Copter Manufacturing Costs?
