What Percentage Of Parents Beat Their Kids?

A report published in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics has found that the use of corporal punishment among parents of 2- to 4-year-olds has dropped from 60 to 39. The study reported a mean of 1.8 children aged 2 to 12 years, with rates of spanking being lower for girls compared to boys and Northeasterners compared to other generations. Millennials and Gen X parents appear to be spanking their kids less than previous generations. One review found that about 80 percent of children are spanked or receive some sort of physical discipline as a punishment. The same review found that spanking is an ineffective way to enforce compliance.

A 2020 JAMA Pediatrics study found that nearly half of U.S. parents have spanked their children as a disciplinary tactic, but many experts argue that this form of punishment—hitting a child—is sometimes appropriate. 81 of parents say that spanking their children is sometimes appropriate, and 35 of children experienced some form of corporal punishment at least once per year. 26 of men 18-59 reported having been spanked or slapped by parent as a child. 61 of women report hitting, beating, spanking, or slapping their children.

Spanking decreased in a subset of parents with a child aged 2 to 4 years from 60 percent to 39 percent. Support for spanking has declined slightly from a high of 54 in 2015 to this year’s 47 who either somewhat or strongly agree with the practice. A U.S. study of 35-year-old parents conducted every year from 1993 to 2017 asked the question, “How often do you spank your child(ren)?” The proportion of parents who spank their children has declined from 50 in 1993 to 35 in 2017, according to the journal.

Should a 12 year old be spanked?

The author posits that the majority of corporal punishment should be administered before the first grade (approximately six years of age), gradually diminish thereafter, and cease altogether when the child reaches the age of ten to twelve. This is due to the fact that children exhibit a range of emotional and developmental characteristics throughout their childhood years.

Is it normal for parents to spank?

Corporal punishment has been linked to increased risk of impaired child development, aggression, mental health problems, impaired cognitive development, and drug and alcohol abuse. Studies have been conducted on large longitudinal studies, controlling for various confounding factors. Joan Durrant and Ron Ensom argue that physical punishment has a direct causal effect on externalizing behavior, whether through reflexive response to pain, modeling, or coercive family processes.

Randomized controlled trials are not commonly used for studying physical punishment due to ethical constraints. However, one existing trial demonstrated that a reduction in harsh physical punishment followed a significant drop in children’s aggressive behavior. Few existing randomized controlled trials have shown that physical punishment is not more effective than other methods in eliciting children’s compliance.

A 2002 meta-analysis indicated that spanking did increase children’s immediate compliance with parents’ commands, but this was overly influenced by one study with a small sample size. A later analysis found that spanking children was not more effective than giving children time-outs in eliciting immediate compliance and that spanking led to a reduction in long-term compliance.

Gershoff suggests that corporal punishment may decrease a child’s “moral internalization” of positive values, such as empathy, altruism, and resistance to temptation. Joan Durrant believes that corporal punishment consistently predicts increased levels of antisocial behavior in children, including aggression against siblings, peers, and parents, as well as dating violence.

Is hitting a child positive punishment?

Corporal punishments, particularly spanking, are a common form of positive discipline for children. However, studies have highlighted potential concerns regarding their efficacy in addressing psychological and behavioral issues.

Is hitting your child a sin?

The New Testament does not contain any verses endorsing spanking, but many discourage hitting a child for any reason. Adrian Peterson, a Minnesota Vikings star, was indicted on child abuse charges after hitting his four-year-old son with a “switch”, causing welts on his legs, scrotum, and buttocks. In response, Peterson invoked the Almighty, tweeting a picture from a religious devotional, Jesus Calling, with a quote about the perils of “habitual judging”. Eighty percent of born-again Christians believe that spanking is acceptable, which is 15% higher than the general population.

Is it OK that I was spanked as a child?

The extant research indicates that spanking children is as serious as other adverse childhood experiences for associated behavioral problems and future trauma risk. This is because the body stores the experience as long-lasting trauma that may persist for years.

Is it OK for a parent to hit a 14 year old?

Physical abuse occurs when an adult intentionally uses force against a child, including intentional striking or spanking. However, many state child abuse laws allow exceptions for corporal punishment. In states without exceptions, state courts may allow parents to use corporal punishment. Corporal punishment is legal in all 50 states, but there are limits, such as being “reasonable” or not “excessive”. These words provide context on the legality of corporal punishment.

The results of the survey indicate that the majority of children in the United States were not subjected to corporal punishment in the past year. The prevalence of spanking was 49 instances per 1, 000 children aged 0-9, 23 instances per 1, 000 children aged 10-17, and 37 instances overall. The only age group where spanking occurred in more than half of the cases was children aged 2-7.

Do spanked kids behave better?

The growing body of literature on the impact of adverse childhood experiences on neurological, cognitive, emotional, and social development, as well as physical health has led to a growing emphasis on developing positive discipline models that rely on nonviolent and effective conflict resolution. Although some studies have found no relation between physical punishment and negative outcomes, most studies have found negative effects.

Research that questioned the traditional punishment-abuse dichotomy has clarified this finding, with studies showing that 75 of substantiated physical abuse of children occurred during episodes of physical punishment. Studies have also found that children who were spanked by their parents were seven times more likely to be severely assaulted by their parents than those who were not spanked.

The mounting evidence linking negative long-term outcomes to physical punishment has contributed to a global shift in perceptions of the practice. In Canada, more than 400 organizations have endorsed the Joint Statement on Physical Punishment of Children and Youth, and legislative reforms have been instituted to better protect children. As a result, there has been a growing emphasis on developing models of positive discipline that rely on nonviolent and effective conflict resolution.

Who is most likely to spank their child?

The study reveals that spanking rates increase with child age from 1 to 3, with 24 children spanked by their mother at age 1, and 55. 2 by age 3. The rate of spanking is influenced by cumulative risk score categories and race/ethnicity at age 1 and age 3. The findings suggest that examining the predictors of spanking at age 3 in a multivariate approach could help understand whether these differences represent cultural differences in child-rearing practices or if these socially-constructed racial groupings are simply serving as a proxy for unmeasured socioeconomic markers in our stratified society.

The significant interaction between risk and race/ethnicity would suggest that these socially-constructed racial groupings may serve as a proxy for unmeasured socioeconomic markers in our stratified society.

  • Look at our society since discipline declined. Since mothers quit raising children, put them in daycare, and went to work. Since fathers didn’t stay husbands, and went there own way. Our family unit abandoned reasonable morals, reasonable discipline, and stepped outside of the responsible lifestyles of family rearing that has worked. The pendulum has swung too far, and we are reaping what we have sown.

  • What about when parents chalked a circle on the door a few inches above a child’s nose and tell them to stand in time out on their toes with the tip of their nose always in the circle? What about when parents made their kids stand in time out with a bar of soap in their mouths for the entire duration? My temporary foster parents did that to me….

  • As a man now, I have to say spanking have made me a better person. It taught me how to respect my elders, how to be reasonable, not to misbehave. As a kid, I was a game addict, and I would steel my parent’s money, not understanding how hard it was to earn them back in the 80s. Imagine minimum wage was $2, and I just stole $20-$100 . Do I deserve to be physically punish, well…………lets just say I’m glad I was. Because of punishment, I had to step up and improve my report cards. As an Asian, coming home with D’s and C’s got me whip all the time. I was a wild child, I would leave home, and not come home until Sun set. I don’t approve physical punishment, but it got me straight in life. I don’t smoke, or do drugs, I never join a gang. As I see the children of today, where parents are now afraid of the law for punishing their own children, it made children selfish, mentally and emotionally sensitive over small things, because parent never laid a hand on them for their mistakes.

  • i say yes cause what other parents didn’t they just can’t handle their own children anymore. well truth is kids are more trouble then ever. it’s respect you’re parents never break something that means something to them. now you see what happens when most people keep up starting a problem with me i tried to do some good now you regret having same old me.

  • Any children reading this who are getting “spanked” or “beaten” by their parents, pick up the phone and call 911. Report child abuse. Tell the truth. Tell the operator if you’ve ever had bruises if your muscles hurt if you are held down by the arms, or if you are touched without clothing (ie spanked on your bare skin). Cal 911, report the abuse!

  • thank you ive been trying to find some answers this helped a little i wish i could find a article explaining missouris laws on corporal punishment in the household oh and that study that says spanking causes more harm then help is bs i mean look at our society now verses then when parents did spank the respect factor alone blows that out the water

  • No more corporal punishment but capital punishment sure.. it’s called a drug overdose and a restraint. Just for like getting tired from carrying crates full of rocks from 1 pile to the other that’s actually what the boarding schools in america are like. A racial boarding school for native americans Hispanics and african american children. Even though I have white skin…my grandfather was from the apachi native reservation and my family is from barrow alaska. But I guess I followed the rules and popped out 2 blonde haired blue eyed kids.

  • A lot of today’s kids are not educated and they have no skills. Life is very hard when you have no skills or education. A degree doesn’t automatically mean that you have these things. You need to discipline your kid when warranted and make them sit down and learn when they don’t want to. Many kids don’t listen to talking. They see it as weak. They see you as weak. Many kids be on a power trip. That is simply the reality. Just because your kid is good doesn’t mean that all others are the same. Some of ya’ll need to be around some very bad kids
