Early parental loss is a highly stressful life event for bereaved children, with several studies showing an increased risk of mental ill-health and psychosocial problems among affected children. Childhood grief reactions are distinct from those in adults and are affected by developmental and social factors. The sudden parental death secondary to COVID-19 can profoundly affect grieving children, putting them at elevated risk of traumatic grief, mood, and anxiety.
The Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model states that over 4.8 million children in the U.S. will experience the death of a parent. The death of a caregiver, sibling, or loved one is one of the most commonly reported and most distressing forms of trauma among youth. The death of a parent is a profoundly stressful form of childhood adversity, increasing the short- and long-term risk of mental health problems.
The study focused on professionals’ meaning-making support to young children (1–6 years old) anticipating and grieving the loss of a parent. Early parental loss is associated with negative outcomes such as anxiety, depression, prolonged grief reactions, negative effects on sense of self, increased risk for suicide, substance abuse, and eating problems, difficulty with executive function, reduced quality of life, and changes to how survivors approach adult relationships.
After a parent dies, many children may act younger than they are, become more infantile, need attention and cuddling, and make changes in their lives. Children who were less than 12 years old when their parent died were more likely to have depression than those who lost a parent in adolescence.
Research suggests that being bereaved as a child can have a negative impact on life outcomes and health, including increased risk of depression.

Does losing a parent change you?
The loss of a parent’s role can lead to a sense of isolation and release. Talking about feelings with those who knew them can help, and volunteers can provide support. It’s also important to remember your parent and keep them in your life by creating a memory box, a special album of pictures, or organizing a time for family and friends to remember. Creating a memory box, album, or gathering for a time to remember can help you cope with the loss and maintain a sense of connection.
What are the effects of death of a parent on a child?
Childhood bereavement can lead to serious health consequences, including schizophrenia, depression, and suicide. The symptoms and syndromes associated with childhood bereavement are categorized into immediate reactions in the weeks and months following the death, intermediate reactions that may appear later in childhood or adolescence, and long-range effects that may appear in adulthood as enduring consequences or delayed reactions to the loss. Although long-range effects are of concern, research evidence in this area is weak.
Children, like adults, experience a range of emotional and behavioral reactions immediately following parental or sibling death, with studies showing similar symptoms in both patient and nonpatient samples.
How losing a parent can impact your brain?
Grief can rewire the brain, affecting memory, cognition, and concentration. Acute grief, which occurs within the first six months after losing a loved one, is the most intense. Symptoms include spacey, forgetful, and difficult speech or expression. The days may involve a mix of yearning and sadness, with constant thoughts and images of the loved one. Over time, these symptoms tend to decrease, allowing for sharper thoughts and clearer memories.
What age do most lose their parents?
The SIPP, a nationally representative, longitudinal survey administered by the Census Bureau, reveals that the most common age ranges for people losing their mother were 50-54 (13. 6), 55-59 (13. 5), and 60-64 (11. 7), with 5. 7 losing their mother by age 15, 17. 2 by age 30, and 50. 7 by age 50. The most common age ranges for people losing their father were 50-54 (11. 5), 45-49 (11. 2), and 40-44 (10. 8), with 10. 3 losing their father by age 15, 29. 0 by age 30, and 69. 2 by age 50.
What happens to kids with dead parents?
In the event that a court appoints a guardian, it is possible for first responders to place children with family members or individuals named in legal documents.
What happens to a child’s brain when a parent dies?
Children who have experienced the death of a parent may feel guilt and blame, leading to feelings of omnipotence and a heavy burden. These children may carry a heavy burden of guilt and responsibility for a crime they did not commit. Although each person’s emotional journey is individualized, people who have lost parents as youngsters share common characteristics. The chaotic experience following early parental loss often leads to problematic behaviors, such as unhealthy eating, difficulty taking care of basic needs, and increased alcohol and drug use. The impact on the body is considerable, with panic attacks reflecting the body-mind connection.
What is the hardest family member to lose?
The death of a spouse is a highly emotional and stressful event, often ranked as the most stressful loss on life event scales. The intensity and persistence of the pain associated with this bereavement are due to the emotional valence of marital bonds linking husbands and wives to each other. Spouses are co-managers of home and family, companions, sexual partners, and fellow members of larger social units. Although the strength of particular linkages may vary, all marriages contain these linkages to some extent.
The death of a spouse ends the relationship but does not sever all relational bonds. The sense of being connected to the lost figure persists, sometimes exacerbating a sense of having been abandoned or contributing to a sense of continuing in a relationship with an absent partner. There are two distinct aspects to marital partnerships: first, both husband and wife look to the other to collaborate in setting marital policy, and second, the survivor must plan alone.
What are the psychological effects of losing a mother?
This study examines the impact of the death of a father, mother, or both parents, as well as living with one or both parents dead, on psychological well-being, alcohol abuse, and physical health. Analyses of longitudinal data from 8, 865 adults in the National Survey of Families and Households 1987-1993 reveal that a father’s death leads to more negative effects for sons than daughters, and a mother’s death leads to more negative effects for daughters than sons.
Problematic effects of parent loss are reflected more in men’s physical health reports than women’s. The study suggests that family researchers and practitioners working with aging families should not underestimate the impact of filial bereavement on adult well-being.
What happens psychologically when a parent dies?
Scharlach studied initial and residual grief reactions among 220 adults aged 36 to 60 who experienced the death of a parent within the past 5 years. His results showed that bereaved adult children report a range of initial symptoms related to parent death, including difficulties sleeping, working, and getting along with certain people. Residual reactions included becoming upset when thinking about the parent, finding it painful to recall the parent’s memory, inability to avoid thinking about the parent, and crying when thinking about the parent. Sharlach found differences in initial or residual grief reactions to mothers in contrast to fathers.
Moss, Moss, Rubinstein, and Resch evaluated responses from 102 daughters 40 to 65 years old who had recently experienced the death of a mother. They found substantial evidence of depression, grief, and somatic reactions, but also found considerable heterogeneity in responses associated with differential characteristics of the daughter, mother, and quality of their relationship.
Uberson and Chen conducted a prospective population study of psychological and physical health outcomes associated with parental death, finding that loss of a mother was associated with a greater increase in psychological distress over time for daughters and sons. Sons who lost functionally impaired mothers to death experienced more distress than sons who lost unimpaired mothers, while daughters whose unimpaired mothers died experienced more distress than daughters who lost impaired mothers to death.
What is the most traumatic age to lose a parent?
The worst age to lose a parent is difficult to determine, but adolescence to young adulthood (ages 12-25) is considered a particularly vulnerable period. This period is crucial for individuals transitioning from childhood to independence, and lack of proper social support and communication can negatively affect trust, relationships, self-esteem, feelings of self-worth, loneliness, isolation, and emotional expression in adulthood. The loss of a parent during this period can significantly impact emotional development, self-esteem, and future relationships.
How does a sudden death of a parent affect a child?
Children experiencing bereavement may experience concentration issues, loss of interest in work, aggression, disruptive behavior, or withdrawal. These changes can significantly impact their academic achievement. Post-bereavement, children may experience regression in behavior, such as bedwetting or attachment issues. These changes can occur months or years after the loss, but are still linked to the bereavement. It is crucial to be supportive and understanding of the child’s performance or behavior, as grief takes time and can be challenging.

I am John Thompson, one of the fathers of the three families in this article. My wife and I know the hurt you have gone thru and am sure, still going thru. The anger will lessen, the questioning will not be the prominent everyday day in your waking period and you will again be able to speak about your loss because you need to speak about your son or daughter. It will help you heal. People I am close to now, I will tell them about Tony’s suicide and the belief I have about the reasoning, even though I don’t have a true understanding. I only hope it may prevent another parent missing the opportunity to talk to their child. Parents, it will hurt for the rest of your life, but each day gets better, your anger will fall away, you will start to meet people again and you will love people a little differently. Thank you for heart felt emotions. The other two families are special in our lives. John and MJ
My son, Nick. He took his life right before this last Christmas. Nick was transgender. He was 3 weeks from his 23rd birthday. He shot himself in a remote area near my home. Nick had so much to offer this world, but he felt this wasn’t his world. My heart and his siblings hearts are broken beyond repair. Please be kind and accept people for who they are. Nick was so loved by many. We need to all be more like Nick was. We love you son, brother and friend.
We lost our only child seven years ago. Car accident. She was sixteen. I felt like I wanted to peel my skin off so I could be someone else…someone whose daughter was still alive. She had a difficult childhood, suffering from Aspergers and loneliness. I blame myself for everything. Her father and I are still married. He’s the only one in the world who knows what’s it’s like to lose our daughter. I long for the day I get to see her again, smiling and laughing. Forever and ever my baby.
I have lost three children, one son to cancer, one son to addiction and my daughter, soon after birth..the death of a child defines you..for how could it not..I remember in the early days after my first darling child died, trying to make myself brush my hair and the only way I could, was to brush the front and not care about the back or sides..of being in the supermarket suddenly overwhelmed and just walking out leaving behind a laden cart somewhere in one of the aisles..on and on it goes…x
I just lost my middle-son to suicide last week. I feel like I am in limbo and everyone expecting me to plan his memorial, answer my phone all the time, say what happened, how, when, why. All I want to do is disappear. I know that isn’t fair to my remaining sons and grandsons, but I just want to quit my job, throw away everything and go. I don’t know how to move forward.
To everyone reading the comments in 2024 in my experience it doesn’t get easier it just gets different! My 23 year old son Austin was murdered in 2018. My life has never been the same and never will be! One piece of advice I’d like to give is allow yourself grace and to feel happiness again. It takes time but I promise you those days will come. Remember you are NOT alone! ❤️ 🙏🏼
Seventeen months ago my beautiful son 44 years of age, was brutally murdered, while siting in his car, by himself. He was a Desert Storm Veteran who was awarded 3 bronze stars and the medal of valor. He was not only my and his step fathers son, he was our best friend. I still can’t seem to believe he is gone. He did not want to die, he was brutally murdered, being shot twelve times at close range. How do you survive this. I am 66 years old and my husband and I went looking for the killer. Eight months ago they did get a warrant for first degree murder for the person who killed my son. But they cannot find him. My heart and my husbands is so empty without him. He is here every where in this house. How do you live through this. It has been. It has been 17 months now, and it still feels like I am so damaged. Sometimes I feel he will still come home and walk through my door. We actually did dangerous things looking for the killer. I just hears you say you need a soft place to fall I wish I could find that soft spot. God Bless all of you..
..my..my Gabriel 💔..I lost my 7 year old son Gabriel..July 26th 2022…to a truck…who was in a hurry..and not obeying the law of a crosswalk…he was walking with his dad to go play baseball at the park close to his home…I was at work…and..the driver completely ran over my baby..💔…and acted like he ran over a puppy…..I saw my beautiful boys disfigured face…his little body…I visited him every day..held him..talked to him..till the time came..I dressed him for his funeral..that’s my son..and I did my best as his mother till he was laid to rest….💔..
4 year’s after my 31 year old daughters death, all i have left is hope that one day i will see her again. The hard part is to learn how to take it one day at a time. My grief will always be there, but it no longer control’s me as it did. For those people out there who wonder what its like to loose a child, no explanation can be given, for those of us who have lost a child, no explanation is needed .
I have buried two sons. My first born, Kyle was born 5/10/1980 and passed away 7/29/1980 from SIDS. I was 21 years old, this led to a number of bad choices by me. I self medicated for many years. I feel tremendous guilt daily as I was a poor example for my second son. My second son, Lucas was 23 years old and died of a heroin overdose when I was 45 years old. The pain of burying my sons is at times unbearable even after all the years have past. I’m 62 now clean and sober and working in an opioid treatment center helping people kick heroin. It fills a place in my heart that feels like I let my second son down.
My daughter Mahogany was murdered by her father at just 2 months old on 01/14/20. I just had my 21st birthday 2 weeks ago and I still feel like the entire world is on my shoulders. I miss my baby everyday. She was literally perfect. A literal angel too perfect for this cruel world. Long Live Mahogany 💖On November 9, 2021 my father committed suicide. I now know the tragic pains of losing a child and parent. I’m reading all of your stories and I’m sending virtual hugs💓💓 Long live our children
I lost my son james to cancer October 8th 2016, he was 30years old, he lived with me all his life. I will never get over what I had to watch my son go through I can’t get the images out of my mind, he died in my arms in my bed. He suffered so much I was almost begging god to take him, I’m getting on with things because that’s what you do, my other 2 son’s need me, I’m a single parent and brought my son’s up myself, we were best friends. I hung on to him for as long as I could because I couldn’t bare the thought of not having him, I don’t know how to describe how I feel, but I do know that there is no pain like it. He almost died when he was 16, he was beaten up and left in a coma he had to learn to do everything again, walk talk etc, but he pulled through only to get cancer at 26, I don’t think he was for this world and I’m grateful for the 30 yrs God lent him to me for. God bless you all who have lost your children I hope you find peace, xo
I lost my beautiful daughter to a botched weight loss surgery on November 6, 2021. She fought a long, hard battle but never got better. I will miss her forever and have so many regrets. I loved her just the way she was but thought I would be helping her by getting this surgery done for her. I was so wrong. I thought I had researched it so much. Wrong. She was only 40 years old when she passed. She was my only child and had no children. She loved kids and wanted them so badly but was unable to have them. Hug your child close. You never know when they won’t be there again. I’d sell my soul for another chance with her.
I notice the timelines; ‘one year ago’, ‘three months ago’ etc… and realize that makes no difference. The same inner pain remains. The ‘shock’ may dissipate physically, but mourning does not. Some part of healing is remembering what gave true joy to that life of theirs that you were briefly invited into. Re~live that. That Life never ends.
This was very comforting for me to hear. I have no one to hear my grieving and facing the death of my child alone. She was only 37 and died from cancer in January this year. She died away from her family and we were in such shock to find out. I felt like a rag soaking in a can of pain. I felt swollen with pain. I could not function or even cry hard enough without my breathing blocking my sobs. I felt stung by a scorpion. The deafness of others, the trite meaningless words you have to endure from others while your mind is howling with grief and sorrow swirls around your heart like a yellow fog shutting out all the light. The anger, the guilt, the shame, the sorrow, the losing of all hope, its such a toxic mix. You feel Death riding on your shoulder the whole way mocking you. You want to blot out the sun for shining and strangle the birds for singing. And you want to curl up and die. Numb. No one understands your pain except the other person who fell out of the plane too and is free falling alongside you. Just like the article says. They are the only ones who get it. They just hold your hand and say nothing. There is nothing to say. You lost your life’s work, all you built, nurtured, fed, taught, laughed with, bathed, sang to, healed from sickness, financed, accompanied everywhere, and loved madly – all gone in one stroke of the clock – vanished forever. The clock that brought them in, and took them out. That clock. That clock is the only thing that will heal you in the end. Time.
My husband committed suicide on December 4, 2015…on our 23rd anniversary. I was left to raise our boys, who were 11 and 15 at the time. I fear EVERYDAY that the hurt my boys feel, will be too much for them to handle… Our oldest will be getting married next October, and he will feel it then. When he moved out, he needed his daddy’s advice. My youngest has made the comment, ” if I would have only talked to him more…” OUR LIVES ARE FOREVER CHANGED. I’m so very sorry for the loss that each one of you deal with…
I’m not a actual father, but this child was like my son, he called me dad, he’d tell me he loved me, and everything. But he was never actually mine and my boyfriends son. We intended to adopt Asher once once of use was old enough but it happened to suddenly. He was shot suddenly while playing at church under the eye of my boyfriend and it was a month ago. He made it to the hospital alive and soon woke up and was doing wonderful and everything but it was just so sudden. Asher died just yesterday so suddenly and it took such a tole on me and my boyfriends relationship. It’s been more difficult to talk to each other and everything has been so difficult already. I wish it were me that were shot instead, not him. He was such a sweet and innocent child as well and I miss him so so much. If only I had been to one shot then maybe Asher would still be here with me and him and we’d still be able to be a family together. I miss you so much Asher, and I love you so much Asher. Please, rest easy now.
We lost our 18 year old daughter 8 months ago to fentanyl. I understand the pain these fathers are going through. We will never get over it. It’s learning to live with it. This is the hardest thing we will ever go through in life. But the love my wife, family, and friends. And along with counseling. We will get to a better place. I miss her so much.
Thank you for sharing your story with me. I lost my first born and only daughter Alicia. She committed suicide on Friday May 11, 2018, The Friday before Mother’s day. She has a son who was 8 at the time. And I’m still waiting for her…. I am lost in every way. I can’t even find myself. I have never blamed anyone for her death. Only myself… and the things I could have done different. She is not only my daughter, she’s my best friend.. my everything. I was able to talk to her like a sister and she rarely told me that I was wrong. She understood me. I love her and miss her. I don’t know where to go for help because.. I feel like running away. ….. Again, Thank you for sharing your story with me. I’m sure it will be of help. God Bless all of you, Lisa Lopez
I would also like to thank these families for sharing their stories and heartache. I just lost my 18 year old daughter in a car accident on May 11, 2015. Two weeks from graduation. I think i’m still in shock most of the time. Now that things have quieted down, it’s actually worse to try and cope. I hate driving in the car, too much idle time and all I do is think and remember and cry. Can’t listen to the radio. Everywhere I look I see her things, songs I hear, smells… all remembrances of what my life was like just a few short weeks ago. Hearing these families feeling the same way I have been is so helpful and I know I’m not alone. I will be perusal these articles regularly and seeking out all remedies to deal with this grief. Please say prayers for us – all of us who have lost a child. It’s truly the worst pain a parent can experience.
I lost my son James Feb 24, 2019. He was 26 years old, and I died with him. I’m told I’ll develop a “New Normal” My faith is weak as I have not hesitated to pray for my son since the day he was born. I believe in Heaven and know I will see my son again one day. For now, life without him has caused a very deep and forever pain!
We lost our daughter peacefully, expectantly. God gave us 35 years with her. We were truly blessed but we will miss her forever. The pain is real, mental physical and spiritual. I cannot imagine the additional pain of losing a child senselessly. Bless you all. I hope we can all find the peace to move forward thru the pain until we see them again.
Can’t believe the physical pain. It’s been one month since I lost my darling boy (age 55). I can’t sleep, feel like I have been punched into the stomach, and night, after the distractions of the day, I go “Oh No, Oh No. He is not here. and to find out how much he was loved and missed (worked in a prison in OK) and the inmates are in despair at the loss of him . One inmate said, Love changes people.” He poured love into the lives of others. He was my link to the outside world. I don’t have anyone home with me so I see all of this alone. After the whirl of the funeral (In his case three memorial services) I am alone with acute, unending pain.

I lost my son from 8 months ago from suicide,,,,,, pieces of everything these grieving parents are saying I can identify with. I went to work after taking a week off, and didn’t cry once. It was a decision I had to make because I knew that would open too many floodgates I wouldn’t be able to control. I saved the tears for home and close friends. I still cry every day on my drive to work, but am moving forward in the hopes I see my boy again one day
We lost our 45 year old son, Scott, June 13, 2015. I understand the indescribable pain of everyone here. I stood by his hospital bed and watched him die because the doctors had no idea what to do for him. It started with pneumonia and a virus they couldn’t figure out. He went into septic shock, then his organs started shutting down. Everyone says no one dies from pneumonia anymore. Well I”m here to tell you they can and they do…
I want to thank the three families that took the time and for there amazing strength to be a part of this article. I lost my son three months ago and every day is a roller coaster ride of emotions. I have suffered many losses in my life, but I have never felt pain like this in my life. There are days when I just don’t want to get out of bed but I know that I have to take care of my wife and daughter so I get up and do what I have to for them. So once again thank you for sharing, it makes me feel better knowing that many of the feelings I am having are normal.
For those who have suffered loss, you have my heart and prayers. Please understand when friends don’t bring up your child’s name, they do it because they don’t want to put you through any pain. Morning and loss comes isn’t a constant. There are times when we can escape from it for a while and then it comes back and you’re so battered and bruised you want the world to stop. If you want your friends to say your child’s name, please let them know. They are not wanting you to close the door on the past. They just don’t want to cause you more pain.
There are no words, no actions, no drugs, nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Sure, eventually you’ll have a good day – maybe even a few in a row – but it’s always right there behind you, inside of you, and it never lessens, never goes away. My baby has died. Nothing can fix that. NormaJean Barnes R.I.P. Your daddy loves you more than life. I deal with it by isolating myself. Alone, I can get through my days. I can’t deal with anyone, anything on the outside because there is no telling what will bring it all rushing right back. A song, a single word, something I see, anything might bring it right to the front, and I collapse all over again. My Fiancée was killed on her motorcycle 18 months after my daughter died. There are no words.
To all those who shared there story thank you 🙏 it shows that I’m not alone in the pain. I lost my Daughter she was my dog but I considered her my daughter. I love her so much she was there for me through my darkest times when I had no one else. She was something I could baby and hold and take care of . She died right in front of me the images in my head keep playing on repeat . I’m at lost on what to do she was my everything I would’ve done anything for her
I lost my only beloved son Melvin Gilbert on 18.8.2000 by an bike accident. Really it was very terrible for us. We lost our hope, confidence, strength. He is our prince. Now my house is empty and darkness. Because my star left me soon. He is just 20 only. My handsome young man you gone to soon. Without you for us no life. So save me a place for us.
Thanks so much for this article. We lost my little brother, age 50, in a motorcycle accident on 5/12/18. He was out on a day trip with his 16 year old son riding on a motorcycle behind him. Poor darling witnessed his father’s death. I cried all through the summer and finally sought out a counselor. My parents are struggling so much. They are not people that acknowledge the feelings that they are having. So my mom has developed serious health problems. My dad runs away. He is managing the estate and there are minor children so it is complicated. I am in Utah caring for my mom while he goes back to NC to “wrap up” the estate. He sent a message yesterday saying he was so depressed. That led me to seek out help. Thanks for this. Please pray for them and all who are suffering from loss.
My 20 month old daughter died 2 weeks ago in an elevator accident, the elevator went up as she was going out of it and she got squashed between the wall and the elevator and was crushed. I am totally out of order, I can’t believe I over lived her, I can’t sleep, I can’t go on, I can’t function, my heart is torn apart and I still breath. She was my everything, she was taken from me very viciously.
This part of YouTube was invisible to my eyes. 70 days back on 24th March, when I lost my son a day after his birth, the shock just ripped through my heart. That feeling of blaming oneself, of constantly thinking why we did this or that, or doing otherwise might have saved the child is very real. When I saw people here grieving loss of their 20/25/30 year olds, I for once thought my pain is very small compared to theirs. But realised quickly that it doesn’t matter how long they have spent with you, we all grieve equally. In our child, we loose future: theirs and ours. What our children’s could have become and achieved, what we would have seen them doing and accomplishing, everything becomes faded memories. I and my wife are still in reproductive age-group, and I hope and pray, that we get success in bringing our son back to our life. Because life, without you Atharva, is no life.
Just watched article and had to comment. Tomorrow is my son shaunes funeral, he hung himself two weeks ago, I’m stuck in shock and cant find any emotions. Not letter no answers. I dont know why I’m telling you to be honest. I dont know what I’m feeling and perusal this article was emotional and could feel all your pain.Mike walsall England. X
Wow, these stories are spot on. It’s been 11 years since I lost my only child, my beloved Julien. I remember that when the police came to my house the next day at 12 in the afternoon and we’d reported that he was missing when he didn’t come home or even go to school as his best friend told me. Like the first lady, my response too was to run into Julien’s room shrieking like never before as four cops held me down – since it’s almost like they knew my next move was going for the front door to run into traffic – so they called an ambulance. My husband said that I almost didn’t sound “human” – as my very soul was screaming for him after the police told me – after they’d asked for his dental records to confirm it was him – that he’d been struck by a train. And it was so strange because he was always such a happy kid – half of me didn’t – just couldn’t believe that it was true. We were SO close – he was my everything. Now I am being told that my 13 year old Son is gone forever – and in such a horrible and violent way. They hauled me away like I mentioned before – and shot me up with haloperidol once I was in the hospital. They let me out the next day under the supervision of my husband at the time. It took two days for me to stop waking up in the morning and tap on his door to make sure that he was up and ready to go to school. I was an utter mess – I didn’t know that it was actually possible for a person to cry THAT many tears 😢. He didn’t leave much of a note – but he did write on a piece of paper “I love you Mom.
Thank you for this article. I’ve struggled with my feelings so much and this article helped. My son passed aways 11 months ago. I pray I’ll make it through the next 11 months, but on the other hand I don’t want to live another 11 months without Alex. It is that painful. I can see now that I’m not alone in this.
Thank you to the families that shared their stories. We lost our 27 year old son in May of this year, 2014. Since he died I have wanted to hide and have. There are times when I feel ok and can enjoy life but out of the blue the memories come flooding back and my grief just overwhelms me. My husband still can barely talk of our son. The one thing that has comforted me is listening to others who have gone through this horrific experience, somehow to know that I am not alone gives me strength to know that I will get through this but that our life is forever changed. My thoughts on rituals have been that I cannot do them but maybe it is an idea I need to reconsider. I am dreading the upcoming holidays.
I don’t know what I’d do without these articles. My daughter went to heaven a month and a half ago. I understand now that what I’ve done is normal. I go in and kiss her pillow, I still talk to her. The first month was a blur and I expected her to walk in the room. Now I look around and realize she will never walk in, I will never kiss her soft hair, she will never put her glasses on again and I’m just having a real hard time. I know she’s well in heaven and what gets me through the moments of each day is faith that God is perusal over us both. But my heart will never mend. I’m grateful for my son. He’s been so wonderful but I have to be careful not to cover him with my grief and let him try to handle his own. I watch her articles she made so I can see her and hear her again. But this is real hell.
We lost our son Tom to Brain Cancer in Feb this year, after an incredible brave battle fo nearly 8 years. I send my condolences to the parents in this article for the loss of their precious children. I am grateful that they shared their experiences, it is an incredibly difficult world without our son and the thoughts and experiences they shared are sadly so familiar.
I keep coming back to Youtube to hear other people’s stories. It helps me feel less alone. I lost my 23yr old daughter to Covid, suddenly, unexpectedly, with no reasoning. She was here, then she wasn’t! Three years have passed, and in many ways I am worse off than early on. I have lost family, friends. I expect to lose all my friends. Nobody understands and nobody really seems to care. It seems like people have no empathy at all. I am so disappointed! I am struggling to find joy in anything. I feel lost, alone, sad, heartbroken, angry, hopeless! Such is life now.
I just want to say thank you for being so brave in sharing your stories- we have recently lost our darling 25 year old daughter from a brain stem tumour – such overwhemling trauma for the three of us – you have given me hope that me and my husband can carry on and even find joy again – Jen will always be in our hearts and part of us – thank you – Lorraine
It has been 1 month and 3 days since my son died by suicide. It is truly the worst thing ever. I am trying to cope and the best thing that I did was to visit a local group called compassionate friends. It is for parents and grandparents who have lost a child. In that group, they gifted me a book that is truly a life changing experience. The book is called Permission to mourn a new way to do grief by Tom Zuba. I hope this will help some of yall. God bless you as you heal.
my sympathies go out to all who have lost a child as I have. my youngest son was a recovering cancer patient and his Dr. know of it yet she did nothing for him and they just let him die in the last hospital with no nutrients. it’s bad enough he was handicapped with cerebral palsy and autism but his death was uncalled for. I’m thankful his dr. was put out of practice but the don’t give me back my son. he was just 30 years old and I miss him so much
I just lost my (step)son 09/13/2018 vehicle vs pedestrian. He was hit while in a marked crosswalk. I find this article helpful knowing I’m not the only one lost for words and at times feels like idk how I’m going to go on. He was 18 years and 4 months old when he was so tragically and brutally taken away from us. He was a double major a UNR (forensic pathology and geology). The first of any of us to live the dream of attending University. The driver was doing 45/55 (ppl can’t make up their minds we just know the guy was speeding) in a 35 and most disgusting and disturbing of all the driver was on his phone when he plowed into my son. Thank you for this article
I lost my stepson in a car accident in 2014. I was so proud to take up the responsibility of raising him and now he’s gone. Not a day goes by I don’t cry and feel like such a failure. They say time heals all wounds but it’s not true. Life just gets busy and distracts for a while and then it slows and I sink back into my greif. I hope we all reunite with the ones we lost and our pain is wiped away.
My son, Isaiah was murdered a month and half ago. I am so sorry for everyone who in their pain and loss have come to this article. I am so sorry for your losses. It means so much to me to connect with others who unfortunatley can understand the deep pain I am feeling because it is very isolating when not many others truly understand. Thank you for this article.
I lost my nephew last month from suicide. He was my brothers only child. He was in his thirties. I struggle with words to comfort my brother so I’m sending him articles of others who are suffering from the loss of a child. I hope this will ease his heartache knowing he’s not alone in his suffering. God bless everyone on this site 🙏
I lost my 2 daughters in 1999 in a car accident. Allison was 18 and Jill was 20 and 7 months pregnant. You have to accept it to be able to move on….but you don’t want anyone to say that to you. The first year is probably the hardest. Your heart feels like it is coming out of your chest. I received counseling for many years. I have so much to say but not enough space here. I know how each of you feels. Everything you say is true and Ive felt it all. I’m sorry for each of you. A child’s suicide is the hardest…I think…I actually feel grateful that did not take place for me….if there is anything to be grateful for in my children dying
I just lost my daughter 11/14/2019 to malpractice. She was only 20 yrs old! Her father and I are so angry! I have so many emotions and lack of emotion and idk what to do! I already dealt with depression before this and I even attempted scuicide after. But this pain is the worst pain I have felt in my life!
We have been through the hardest thing that can happen to future parents. Full of joy and pleasure we have been looking forward to the birth of our daughter for the last 9 months. We played, laughed and talked with her. We went swimming, massaged, touched and hugged her. We were ready for her and she for the world. The delivery had started nicely on the due date. Unfortunately you were no longer there, you were so close. We miss you so much and will never forget the last 9 months. You will forever be our daughter. Your mom and dad love you dearly.
Thankyou for sharing with us. It has brought me some comfort experiencing grief right now. The pain is horrendous. We are never the same person anymore. We just have to find a new way of living out the rest of our life the best we can. I pray and hope we get to see our loved ones again when our time here is done. Sending love to anyone who is suffering right now.❤
It’s been six years since my son took his life, I’ve only in the last year felt I was getting myself back together again. I decided to get a small semi colon tattoo to honour him, the meaning is there is more as something always follows a semi colon. My apt was switched at the last minute and at exactly the time I was getting my tattoo my other son was found passed away in his apt. That was two weeks ago. I know what’s ahead, I know all the pain and confusion I’m going to experience and I already compare and ask why am I not feeling this or that. I think I’m still in shock? I I also have been trying to spare others the pain I was in before. I’m like a lead weight, I can barely move sometimes. I’m alone it’s just me and while I understand that as a couple this could break you, I also see much comfort in being able to share that loved one with someone who loved them like you.
I lost my beautiful son to suicide four years ago. He was 37. If you’ve never lost a child, imagine waking up one morning to find both of your arms and legs have been chopped off. Then you might have a small inkling as to what it feels like. I don’t know if there’s a word in the English language that can describe the depth of the pain. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.
I lost my daughter Emily on January 5, 2020. She was 3 years old and 3 months. Emily was the light of her dad n I. She was epileptic and had cerebral palsy. I blamed myself for her condition due to me taking a medication that was prescribed to me. It would break my heart seeing my daughter not being able to run and play. But even than it was ok because I knew my husband and I would always be there for her and love her unconditionally. I would never thought I would lose her. The night her dad found her and she was lifeless in her bed. I was in shock and prayed and prayed the doctors could revive my little girl. But when they said they’re was nothing they could do. It was like a nightmare and my heart broke. I cannot bare it when I remember that night. Nothing could and still cannot heal my pain of losing my sweet Emily. My husband was in the same boat only he became so close to her as she got bigger. I felt for a while I couldn’t fully grieve. I was filled with guilt of what I should have done better what I could of did to prevent her death. It almost became too overwhelming especially when my husband made 3 attempts of suicide. Forwhatever reason I came home in the right time. I begun to think about one day losing him as well. That alone was excruciating and I worried I would lose my sanity. Today we’ve made alot of progress in our lives but no matter what I find myself struggling with her death. My heart goes out to all the parents dealing with losing a child. It’s the hardest to endure
I lost my son 2 months ago, I found him in my laundry room, I had to cut him down and did cpr. and then mouth to mouth and it did not help, I don’t know how to make it from one day to another, no one seems to understand the pain, and say it will be better with time, it upsets me people say you need to move on. I find it hard to breath, hard to put one foot in front of the other, I want to stay away from people, they do NOT help with their comments.
I also feel your pain. My 1st son was killed in car wreck I was in 4/23/1978-6/24/1981 Robert, that was so devistating. Recently my baby son has died, Stacey he was 35 yrs 1/13/1985 – 7/30/2020. He died of a severe asthma attach and went into cardiac arrest, went without oxygen for to long. He was a donor. They had him on life support for 9 days. My son died in surgery when they took his body parts. Really no closure in that way. Still struggling with the life that goes on. Stacey and I were very close, his whole life he has fought with his asthma. We were in and out of hospital most allof his life. I think longest we have been apart as in him at my house or phone calls only a week. He worried about me and I have always worried about him. Now life is so empty. I have another son but he has been distant for at least ten yrs now and hasn’t came around. Love all my boys. I’m just so lost. Thank you for sharing gives me more hope. I’ve been single mom for several years. I’m a very independent woman. Thank you so much.
I keep coming to these articles. I lost my boy. I think that there’s strength in numbers. We can’t be the same afterwards, because this is something we’re so totally unprepared for. Like you, my heart is crushed. Perhaps between us we can write the book of what to do when this happens. Peace to all bereaved parents and their close ones.
this is the first time perusal. others grieve and talking about their loss of their child, Iv been in denial of my children are really gone.been trying to move forward and start a new life, its my sons birthday in 2 days and I found myself looking at cards, all the stages they talk about iv been thru but at the time didnt understand there would be triggers even a few yrs later especially when i see children and hear them call they”re mom I love Jesus I know He is my peace and he heals us lil by little and tonight I will stop asking why.I choose life,I choose to stop beating my self up with guilt over something that is and was out. of my control I give it to you God and pray for strength and grace may you heal all the. deep scars every parent that has lost a child, heal their memories and release them from the prison of guilt and send them a sign of your love to console them thank you JESUS.
We lost our 16 year old son on December 16th for reasons not yet explained. I went upstairs to wake him up for school like I did every morning but he was cold, stiff and non-responsive in his bedroom floor. Along with the trauma of the whole situation, we still have no medical explanation 6 mos later. I’m hanging by a thin thread every day and the loss is so profound I find it hard to breathe most of the time.
Thanks for posting such a truly inspiring article. Sept 10 last year lost our smart, handsome, brilliant, caring, 30 year old son, friend, confidant, and everything in a freak drowning incident. Totally inexplicable and gut-wrenching. This article is absolutely great! We feel the loss of each one on this thread Love you all very much
I grew up with 3 sisters one brother, and out parents. when me and my brother were young. He was 5 years older than me. We stayed in the same bed room. Shared Christmas presents like our first street bike. I was much to young to ride on legally. But I often rode with my brother in the seat behind. We used to speak at a young age what would we do when our parents pass. Talking about hoping they don’t go while we were young. Well, he was the first to pass. Currently in my family. Only me and one of my sisters are alive today. in order, my brother passed while off shore. My oldest sister then passed many years later. the next oldest sister passed, my Dad then passed. A few years later my mom. Now me and my sister are the only ones alive today. And it is very painful. I never imagined it would end up this way. I am the baby of my family. And my sister was the youngest of girls. I am very sorry for those who have children to teen agers who pass away.
I lost my beautiful Ciera 3 years ago. Not a day goes by I wish to have her in my arms. I can so relate to these parents. I now can talk about her without crying, but it’s only been in the last 6 months. She has come to me through ritual awakening to reassure me she is always with me and she is happy. That has brought me comfort in the most devastating thing that can ever happen to a parent. I pray daily and God continues to carry me through. I look forward to the day we are reunited again. Thank you for sharing this article. When you lose a child to whatever the circumstance you feel alone and feel no-one understands. This article will help many parents feeling that very same thing.
I so share in the grief and pain that all of these parents are feeling. My son age 41 suddenly passed away from heart disease 2 months ago. I was devastated, could not believe what the doctor said to me. Suddenly I was in a black hole and inconsolable, I had just seen him that morning and he was gone before the end of the day. Navigating through life now is a challenge and I will feel the effects of this the rest of my life. But I have hope that God will show me ways of handling it better. Thank you for sharing your stories, there is even healing in the sharing.
I came on this website because we lost our precious daughter and her unborn baby (she was 8 months pregnant) to a drugged driver on 9-11-2001. She was returning from a prayer vigil for our nation on that horrible day of terror and was hit head-on by a man passed out behind the steering wheel intoxicated with cocaine, heroin and marijuana. Her baby was in her arms in the casket and the pain never completely goes away. But as I am reading some of these posts, I see so many mentions of suicide. My husband’s sister committed suicide in 2006 and we know the horror of having to drive over to tell their parents that she was gone by a self-inflicted gun shot. We founded Heartfelt Counseling Ministries which is a nonprofit helping people with 2 basic issues; the death of losing a child and helping people with mental health issues and trying to prevent suicides. Mental disorders are so awful and painful and we understand all of that, too. God bless you. robyn bloem
Our 36 year old son was killed in a highway accident just 2 days ago 6/5/2021. He was in Virginia, we are in NY. We are waiting for the ME to clear the release of the body so we can lay him to rest. This powerlessness is crippling. We go from sort of “ok” to undulating waves of nausea and sadness. I suppose this is “normal” given the circumstances. We have come to this article seeking solace and advice. May all of those deceased mentioned on this thread Rest in Peace. Our son Daniel with them.
The pain is unbearable. I wonder how I am still breathing. I lost my beautiful 33 year old son a few months ago. I cry every day. Each day is worse. He fought for 33 years to stay alive because of his love for his family and careless doctors at Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Weston Florida, took him from us. We are devastated. How does one get through this?
I lost my 6 months old premature girl child due to a pregnancy complication of mother. Eventually it lead to another loss. While I am in pain since last 7 years, for everyone around it was “nothing happened”. People ask “Does it hurt”, “Are you Ok”, “When will it be over”. And people and parents talk so many ideal things in public and social media as if they care. My Loss was not unique, I acknowledged and was doing everything to move on, while others were using it as opportunity to put more hurdles and make things more difficult.
I was 18 weeks pregnant, and lost my son. He never got to take his first breath, the pain is surreal. I feel helpless, angry, sad, depressed, and so much more. In therapy because I’ve never dealt with loss at all. My grandparents were deceased when I was 3, so no memory there. I go through life feeling empty, a mother without a child. Even worse for my husband, who has now lost 2 sons, his first died a week after being born early. To top it all off he also lost his best friend 3 days before our son to a stroke. I try, but it’s hard, to want to be alive. I don’t want to kill myself, but I don’t particularly want to live either. It’s just not fair, no one deserves this loss.
I don’t know I guess it was pain and dismay after my daughter’s death funeral almost 3 years it was before I cried. Now 5 years since I have what’s called rage uncontrollable anger. Last night I asked myself have Iost my mind ? Or is it just now that I’m missing it. Because there is no greater pain than a loss as this. I miss you baby girl 🌹
I am grateful I found this interview. Like the first couple. The husband said: You know people some don’t ask you how are you. They avoid asking anything regarding your beloved child. Even family members think you ok. I am a single mother. One morning 6:16 am a priest 3 policeman know on my door your daughter has passed away I said Aili angel which one. We’re they together. I am saying losing my young daughter that morning. Was darkness. I remember very little. For days almost dead myself. I do not have answer for anyone. It has only be less than 7 months. I thank Jesus with all my heart she is home free beautiful lovely. That’s what’s gets me through. Yet, I cannot sleep. I try. I am afriad and feel guilty I was not with her. I feel her all around me always. Maybe you don’t believe me. Please stay close to others after a person major losses. Please don’t be the person we truly need. To not address us/ thanks for listening everyone. Bless each one of us on this big plant. 🍃🌺🍃🕯🙏
Iv lost a daughter 2010 suicide . My son found dead at 19 on 2019 from a drug overdose l suffer in silence most the of the time .lm alive but l feel dead inside . I could say much more but every said on hear sums up most of what l deal with and been through. Often l have very little joy in my life . Bless you all on here .
My daughter left 5 months and 4 days ago. I try to keep it together and act normal for my son when he comes over on Saturdays. I’m not ok. Saturdays I live for him but the rest of the week I just breathe. I don’t know what to do about this emptiness that no one can fill but her. We were affectionate, now I can’t kiss or hug her, I don’t hear her noise and what was once a home is just a house I’m miserable in. My heart aches beyond words. I’m very jealous of women with their daughters. I want to run till I disappear but I have to be here for my son. My cousin asked me yesterday if it was getting better. It will never get better. My soul friend is gone. I don’t know what to do with this emptiness. I was never a crier. I cry day and night now. I didn’t believe in hell before but I’m living it now. It would be easy to go crazy with this lonely pain. If it wasn’t for my beloved son I don’t think I could handle this. My aunt said I lost a husband, you’ll get over it. You replace a husband but you can’t replace that child. It’s just deeper.
I lost my wonderful son, my only child, this past May, it was suddenly and unexpected, and it forever changed me, and my life. I am shattered. Grief is a constant companion, and there are PTSD triggers everywhere. I could be so-so one minute and hear a song, or see something, or a memory comes to mind, and I breakdown. Losing my son is like losing my breath and not being able to catch it. I feel left behind, alone, and I wish that God had taken me instead. The only thing that keeps me going is knowing that one day I will see my son again. If it wasn’t for my faith I don’t know if I could handle this indescribable pain. Someone told me to treat myself like I would treat my best friend, to be kind and gentle to myself. I try, but it’s hard to take care of me, when I feel no joy at all. There’s a void in my heart, and in my everyday life, an emptiness, that nothing could ever fill. I am 😥 sad….I miss my son.
I lost my adult son almost 1 yr ago. Where’s my family & so called friends? No one around to help. Not one single family member has reached out to me except kinda right after it happened but that was almost 1 year ago. I haven’t found any groups here that only deal with the loss of a child, not a spouse or grandparent, but your child, adult child, young child.
Lost my 18 year old son to cancer nearly 24 years ago. It has been a long, painful journey but we made it as a family, although we are different now, still incomplete and there are still painful and tearful days, when I think back to what once was and how it is now. His sister has married with two teenage children of her own, he has missed so much and we have missed so much by not having him here on earth. We have changed, we don’t take life for granted, we are grateful for the sunshine and the rain, and thankful to God that our son is safe in His hands. But we miss him so much and cannot wait to be with him again. Losing a child is a life time lesson about forgiveness, remembrance, memories and above all, the joy and the love that our children gave us. It’ been a long and painful journey as I said at the outset, but it has taught us so much about ourselves and others. God bless to all those on the same road x
It’s a pain that is beyond comprehension. For me it’s easier to be angry, than to face the unbearable guilt…it’s becoming more intolerable with each passing day. I was told immediately ‘just move on’. Life stopped on that day. I’m so sorry to all parents that lost a child…no matter the circumstances, it’s a journey no parent should endure
I lost my son 2 1/2 years ago and I’m just now coming out of the fog. I was feeling a bit sad that I was still so upset until people started telling me there was no timeline, grieve at your own pace and don’t let anyone rush you. This loss will never go away and I still can’t believe it but I know he would want us all “to get on with it”.
It feels like more than anything you want to go with them To have come this far and let them go on alone would be dereliction of duty More than anything we want to follow them And the long long wound of passing moments is like our souls left open And raw to all the slow elemental torments of voices and rain More than anything they lead us on Because staying here without them is to feel all the love we ever gave Shredded and strewn each day further from the hearts That would be together if it werent for everything And those who do not understand would have us ignore the Agonising tug of their absence and to spite them By staying here in what some call life But to find the website of darkness they have travelled And slip through after them, willingly and glad to Follow them is what we want more than anything.
We are living a nightmare that we are unable to handle. We lost our adult son May 18, 2015 and I think I am in denial. He had lived with us the last 5 years and I am still thinking he is going to walk in the door everyday. The pain is unbearable and the family and friends that first surrounded us are now avoiding us or when we do talk, they never mention his name. He has a name and it is Trent. When talking with people, I say his name in our conversations…Trent! We have a daughter that married and left our state when she was 19 and has never lived closer than 1100 miles to us. She had taken her brother out of her life several years ago. Now she is insisting if we talk with her, that we never mention Trent’s name. She said that we act like all we care about is his death. How long does grief go on? I have no idea. But, when she sent me an email 2 days ago saying that she didn’t want anymore contact with us. My prayers have gone unanswered as I don’t know what or why all this is happening to us. We have tried to be the best parents to both our children….now the one that is left has left us out of her life. I am so hurt by this and she has no idea what it is to lose a child, no matter what age. My husband and I just cling onto each other as our tears fall upon each other. Please pray for us.
I saw what losing a brother did to my parents and I felt worse than that man that said he didn’t know if he wanted to even live let alone accept it…I knew it made me NOT even think about living and GOD stepped in and basically told me that if I didn’t give me life then what made me think i could take my life and I had a dream about talking to God about suicides and murders and accidents deaths duseases and he told me it was then that I carried them 👣 and I felt peace love and understanding ❤❤❤❤❤
My son turned 14 on Oct. 10th he took his own life Nov. 17 2021. I cry every day . I miss him every day. I want to be with him. The pain my wife and I and my other 2 teenage children are going through I don’t wish on anyone. We don’t know why he did what he did. The day of my son’s suicide just hrs before he came out of his room and we had a few pleasant words he laughed I laughed and he walked back into his room that was the last time I saw him alive. I found him a few hrs later. If you or somebody you know are suffering from depression please seek help speak to a friend or loved one about it because the pain you will leave behind is more pain then your family can handle. I’m not a religious person but I know my son is okay now he is not in pain anymore and I will see him again. To my son. I love you and miss you more then you will even know. Be a good boy and I will see you in my dreams.
You never get over it, the “what ifs” roll around in your head endlessly. Your mind closes to everything else….. your first thought in the morning…. last at night and when you wake in the night its first thing. But as time goes on you have to learn to compartmentalise…. you have to or it will consume you. You go through the motions, then for us the gift God arrived in our first grandchild. We realised that we owed it to her to be proper grandparents and give share our love with her who in time loved unconditionally. The empty space will never be filled… it can’t be but we can now look back to the good times while moving forward with the help of wonderful distractions.
Thank you for taping this article. However, I do not agree with you. I lost my only son 15 years ago. He was a 17, Junior, captain of his basketball team, class president, IB student, and all the other great things an exceptional child excels in. He went fishing one day a week before we were moving cross country and he slipped and fell and went down a steep trail then fell into deep water. He was knocked out and yes, he drown. Our lives are awful, painful and full of sorrow. Our families were not caring, they barely called, visited or even cared. Of course they all had a few kids (all in college at that time) and they just didn’t get it. Our son was the only child to have died in our extended family. Things don’t always get better. People avoid you, people don’t care, unless you can find a group of people who have lost their own child, you will be “f-ed” unless your family or friends step up. No one did for us (mainly because my hubby and I are the youngest of 5 and I guess we should have known better? WTH? It will hurt forever – it NEVER goes away, people will freak and leave you if you tell them your story – I haven’t told anyone here when we moved 6 years ago – we had friends who weren’t afraid their kids were gonna die too! Then last year we told a few of our friends – They were kind and compassionate and then the calls stopped coming. It’s not us – we’re both normal professionals and people like us. But telling someone your child died only works for the people who have support.
I am thinking we all must be totally unaware of the way this universe works to be so blasted into an empty zone by the sudden death of our loved one.We all have the same reactions. I found my 34 year old son 2 days after he died from fentanyl. Should we all not prepare by seeing all who are born here have to leave? Should we all not have constant contact with that Power who created us?
I lost my elijah maxwell on jan 16. He was shot and killed by my nephew . i have imagine pain of this magnitude but here i am. He was 9 years old. I was there when he took his last breathe..I scream i cry .i fill so lost at times. Pain is indescribable…. I have other younger children 13,9,8. They hurt tooo. Its very hard as mother to watch your children in pain.. Im only 30 years old. The only one in my family to lose a child this young. If are reading pray for me……i trust god and know hes in better place …..but sometimes i miss him so so so much….. Fly high my second born son. I will always love you…
I`m 25. For last 2-3 months i`m in constant depression bcuz of personal issues which are related to my son and my sons mother.. idk.. lately im starting to think about suicide but the only reason which holds me from that is how my mom would feel.. not sure.. maybe im still going to meet a god soon, just for my own sake. i just dont see a reason to live anymore.
