Racism is a significant social determinant of health that negatively impacts infant and early childhood socioemotional and behavioral development. Multiple studies have documented the stresses of everyday discrimination on parents or caregivers, such as being associated with negative stereotypes, can have harmful effects on caregiving behaviors and adult mental health. The Racism + Resilience + Resistance Integrative Study of Childhood Ecosystem (R3ISE) focuses on the interaction between racism and the child’s development.
The Center on the Developing Child (CDC) at Harvard University has looked at how racism gets “under the skin” and affects learning. To identify, address, and manage the impacts of racism on child health, pediatricians must understand three key levels through which racism operates: racial-ethnic socialization, where all children, including White children, learn about race through a process known as racial-ethnic socialization.
Children targeted by racism have higher rates of depression, anxiety, and behavior problems. Discrimination and racism are often recognized as forms of violence, and campaigns countering racial discrimination by targeting racial prejudices and addressing systemic racism and interpersonal discrimination can help.
Constant coping with systemic racism and everyday discrimination is a potent activator of the stress response. Acknowledging stereotypes and their psychological impact is crucial for addressing racial discrimination. Institutional and cultural racism can harm health through stigma, stereotypes, prejudice, and racial discrimination.
In conclusion, understanding the interaction between racism and the child’s development is essential for addressing the impacts of racism on child health. By addressing systemic racism and addressing interpersonal discrimination, we can work towards a more inclusive and supportive environment for children of color.
