The Karate uniform, also known as the Gi or Dogi or Keikogi, is a traditional outfit consisting of a jacket, pants, and belt. It symbolizes discipline, respect for tradition, and promotes unity among practitioners worldwide. The history of the gi dates back to ancient China and Japan.
Under the karate uniform, it is recommended to wear a moisture-wicking undershirt and comfortable shorts or leggings. All uniforms consist of two major parts: the jacket (uwagi) and the pants (zuban). The jacket has two open flaps in the front that are cross-tied.
An extensive range of karate uniforms is available for students, instructors, and competitors, including WKF approved Karate gis. A karate gi is a de-evolution of the traditional gi, which is made of lightweight, breathable fabric. In traditional karate training, it is customary to wear a complete karate uniform, which consists of a jacket (gi top) and pants (gi bottoms).
The dress code for karate classes is athletic wear without zippers or pockets. Male students who want to wear leggings/spats must wear shorts over them. Students wear a white or black Gi to Karate classes, unless directed otherwise. Females wear a sports bra underneath the Gi jacket.
A standard karate gi consists of a pair of pants (shitabaki), a wrap-around top (uwagi), and a lengthy fabric belt (obi), which holds the top together. There are various types of martial arts uniforms that make great leisure wear, such as karate, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu Gis, MMA Shorts, Demo Team Pants, Kung Fu Pants, and Muay.

I used how to dress and how to fold the GI for a young kid with mental health issues as a Karate lesson, it was good for teaching patience, discipline and respect for oneself and to the teacher. I never taught this child any kicks, punches or blocks, only this and how to stand and footwork (basic). Certainly worked as a way to reach someone, Karate works
This helps a lot. When I first put on my GI I wrapped it the wrong way. I didn’t know the it matted for witch side the jacket went. My Senei told me I was dead. There is a big history behind how the jacket goes. It has shown me to have more respect for the Gi. It’s very honorable when you weir the Gi. I would like a article on the history of the Gi. Why everything is the way it is. The whole concept of the tradition of why we weir it to practice martial arts. Why each style has a different one.
I keep trying to remember the Japanese word/command/order for when you’re in the dojo and you’re practicing or if you’re in a kumite, if your Gi starts coming loose, your belt starts coming off, etc., in short if your gi starts getting very messy due to excessive movement, your instructor or referee will give a 1-word command as a temporary time-out of a few seconds for you to arrange your gi and fix yourself up. Anyone able to help me up with this? I haven’t practiced for a number of years and although I’m beginning to remember even the most advanced techniques or subtle nuances, this word I cannot remember for the life of me 🙁 Thanks!
Okay I swear there are either extra or missing strings on my gi. “All the strings should be tied” There are two strings on my jacket, nothing to tie them to once the lapels are over each other. No one has an answer either. Some people don’t even have strings on their jacket. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON
