The death of a parent can be a difficult time for both partners, and it is essential to support them in any way possible. Here are eight helpful ways to help your partner after the death of a parent:
- Take charge (if needed and wanted)
- Ask questions
- Just be there
- Be patient
- Reassure them they’re grieving “correctly”
- Don’t try to fix it
- Seek professional help if it gets worse
- Try to embrace the opportunity death brings.
When you say “I’m here for you”, you mean that you’re here to do what you feel like you need to do for their grief. Share memories, honor their memory, forgive them, accept help, embrace family, consider support groups, talk to a therapist, takeaway, self-care, call and visit your parent regularly, and acknowledge meaningful dates with them.
To help your partner during this difficult time, follow their partner’s lead and listen if they want to talk. If they need space, be there for them.
Recognize that grief shows up as many different emotions and work with them to cope with them. Talk with a crisis counselor today for verified global support for anxiety, depression, suicide prevention, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and more.
How partners show up or don’t—after a loss can profoundly impact the relationship, either strengthening it or exposing the cracks. Ideally, a supportive partner should be there for their partner and allow them to talk about their loss if they want to.
Feeling grief is not just about feelings of sadness and loss; it is a lot more than that. People experiencing grief can go through a variety of emotions, from sadness to anger, guilt, and even depression.
📹 Losing a Parent: How to Help a Grieving Friend
This video was created for you to comfort someone who is grieving. Do you know someone who has lost a parent and you were …
How to comfort a girlfriend who lost a parent?
Grief is a deeply personal response to losing someone you love, and it can be difficult to watch them suffering and understand what you can do to help them. It is a profound and deeply personal experience that can range from feelings of sadness and loss to physical symptoms such as nausea, difficulty sleeping, exhaustion, headaches, chest pain, and digestive problems. To help your partner through grief, remember to be non-judgmental, present and listen, take the pressure off them, accept their feelings, help them find further support if needed, let them know you’re there for them, and speak about the person who has died.
How do I comfort my boyfriend who lost his mom?
Encourage your partner to talk about their grief, as it is a crucial step in helping them move forward. You don’t need to be a grief counselor or have all the answers, just be there and willing to listen when they are ready to open up. If you don’t feel comfortable assuming this role, help your partner find someone they can talk to. Bottling up their emotions won’t help in the long term, and talking is the best way to move through their emotions and find acceptance. Remember that your partner may have lost someone they used to talk to, so find someone to fill this gap in their life.
What is the hardest death to grieve?
The death of a child is a significant experience that often conflicts with life-cycle expectations. In the United States, deaths of children aged 1-14 account for less than 5% of mortality, and most families today lose none. However, 400, 000 children under 25 die each year from accidents, diseases, suicide, or murder, leaving around 800, 000 bereaved parents. As life expectancy increases, the number of elderly adults experiencing the deaths of their middle-aged children may also increase.
Children hold great symbolic importance in terms of generativity and hope for the future. Childrearing involves decisions about shaping a healthy, happy, and creative adult. When a child dies, the hopes and dreams of the parents die as well. Although guilt and self-blame are present in most bereavement situations, they are likely to be especially pronounced following the death of a child, which may be a psychological risk factor.
How losing a parent affects relationships?
Early parental loss has a relatively low impact on adult relationships, despite higher rates of health and emotional issues. Despite this, adults who experience early loss generally find and maintain adult relationships, although they are less stable, indicating a level of attachment insecurity. This low level of relationship difficulties demonstrates resilience in the face of loss for most people.
Future research could focus on the quality of relationships and attachment style, correlated with mental and physical health, as well as the quality of grieving, culture, and family coping. Identifying the issues and those they affect would be valuable in providing help to those most in need.
How to comfort your boyfriend when his mom died?
The grieving process of a parent’s death can be incredibly traumatic, regardless of age or proximity. It is essential to understand the partner’s experience and support them in making arrangements, providing space, encouraging conversation, and getting comfortable with silence. While you may feel you are grieving their loss, it is crucial to remember that your loss should be secondary to theirs. Your partner may need more support as they navigate this next stage in their life.
The grieving process can include stages such as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. It is essential to understand that the process will be different for everyone, but common themes such as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance can arise. Being supportive and resilient is crucial in helping your partner navigate this next stage in their life.

How long does shock last after losing a parent?
The experience of shock is subjective and varies considerably from one individual to another. Some may recover relatively quickly, while others may experience the effects for hours or even days. There is no definitive or optimal way to experience shock.
Can losing a parent traumatize you?
The risk of a child experiencing grief increases if they lack adequate support during the grief stages. Losing a parent can be traumatic, impacting their physical health and potentially affecting gender. Teenagers may complain more frequently about physical pain than emotional pain. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross identified five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. These stages differ from adults, with girls who lose mothers and boys who lose fathers more deeply impacted. The impact of grief on teenagers may be influenced by gender.
How to support a partner whose parent is ill?
Maintaining contact with a grieving loved one is crucial to remind them of their support system and their availability. Avoid crowding or overwhelming them, instead demonstrating emotional availability. Avoid making assumptions, as some grieving individuals may appear fine and continue with their daily routine, leading others to believe they are coping well. Be prepared to ask uncomfortable questions to allow your friend to be honest and share their feelings.
Offer practical assistance, such as cooking meals, loading the dishwasher, or bringing over tea bags and biscuits. Planning the funeral can be overwhelming, so offer help with organizing the funeral and ensuring your loved one feels supported and understood. This will help them feel more comfortable and able to share their feelings with you. Remember, it’s important to be there for your loved one during this difficult time, and be prepared to ask uncomfortable questions to ensure they feel heard and understood.
What is the hardest age to lose a parent?
The worst age to lose a parent is difficult to determine, but adolescence to young adulthood (ages 12-25) is considered a particularly vulnerable period. This period is crucial for individuals transitioning from childhood to independence, and lack of proper social support and communication can negatively affect trust, relationships, self-esteem, feelings of self-worth, loneliness, isolation, and emotional expression in adulthood. The loss of a parent during this period can significantly impact emotional development, self-esteem, and future relationships.
How to support a partner who has lost a parent?
Support your spouse after the loss of a parent by acknowledging and validating the pain of losing a parent, remembering that grief is not linear, and offering comfort and reassurance. Help honor their parent’s memory by planning funerals, cremation, burial, personalization, receptions, veterans, pet services, and grief recovery. Use online planning forms, meet with a professional, and resources to help you navigate the process. Share your values, story, blog, and affiliations with your spouse.
I lost my husband last February 01, 2023. He was just 29 years old. It is the most difficult turn of events in my life. He was a loving, pious, and ideal husband one could wish for. He left me with a one year and 7 months daughter. Our near four years of marriage was such a beautiful memory of our love. But I always believe that it is Allah’s Qadr. He is now in a much better place with our creator, Allah Subhanawa TaAllah. Please include him in your Dua. May Allah forgive his sins and grant him Jannatul Ferdaus. Ameen.

I lost my mother on 16th July 2023. Not a day goes by that I dont think of her. When she left this world, a huge chunk of my heart is gone too. I miss her so much that it hurts. I can’t even use past tense for her til date. I’m still having flashbacks of her last moments before she died. I would do anything to undo whatever wrongdoings i did to her. And tomorrow is her birthday. She would have been 62 years old. Oh Allah, please lessen this pain of missing her as it is still as fresh and raw as if she passed away yesterday.
My cousin passed away yesterday, we were both 24 and born a month apart. Grew up together as brothers and best friends. He was going through rehab because of drugs and was making amazing progress, zero health problems and was going to be released today. However it was his time, a person in the hospital told us he woke up To pray fajir prayer and went back to sleep and then the doctor told us he died from cardiac arrest in his sleep. I am glad the last thing he did was pray to allah, I will see him soon one day in jannah inshallah.

Today, I lost my dear grandmother. I still can’t comprehend the fact that she’s gone. She was the beacon of light in our family, devoting her life to Islam, reading Quran everyday and reciting lots of zhikr with every ounce of spare time that she has. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. “Verily we belong to Allah and to him we will return”. Please, if you have a moment of free time make dua for my grandmother. When I see a Muslim crying about the loss of their family member who was a good Muslim I don’t understand how they can be so upset, I would be overjoyed if my family members died as Muslims, losing a brother or mother or anyone in your family that isn’t Muslim now that is going to be beyond upsetting, may Allah lead all my family and friends to Islam like he did me ❤

I realised something when a person feels proud of his wealth, home or any thing in his life . Remember that everything we have is by the grace of allah. If allah didn’t wanted us to have it, we wouldn’t be having any of the items we have in our homes. Alhumdulilah. I suggest you all to say هذا من فذل ربي. Whenever we feel proud we should say this. This will help our heart to know that whatever we are holding on to is from allah. ❤️ .
Losing my mum was the hardest thing i had ever to go through. Ppl say the time heals everything but I don’t agree with that statement. My family tried to push me out of my sadness and pretend it was not a big deal, telling me to move on, telling me to be strong. i am so lost without her. everything seems meaningless. I cant find joy in anything. I miss her 😭😭😭😭😭

Assalam Alaikum Sheikh! Your speech was very beautiful! We needed this knowledge badly. I just hope lot of the bread earner hear your speech and act upon it. I say this as lot of our (bread earner – mostly men) do not share if they have any savings with their wives or children for safety (I am sure). In that case they should do something in case ( May Allah forbid) anything should happen to them. So in their absence the families are not left begging for survival. I hope I have not said anything disrespectful to anyone. I meant well for the families who are left with nothing.

I’ve lost my father on 21 th November 2023. I was a really bad child to him. I used to disobey him a lot and didn’t appreciated none of his effort. Now when he is dead I feel a sudden pain in my chest. The pain of loneliness what my father felt all his life. We are 6 children of him and none of us was there to provide him in any need when he was dying. I live abroad and I never even called him in last 2 months. Now I can’t forgive myself. I feel like it would have been more easy for me if I had died instead of him. May Allah bless All the parents who are alive or dead. Please pray for my father that Allah subhanallah taalah may take him to his wonderful paradise. Ameen.

I lost my sister last January 2. The first thing that comes to me is asking Allah why He allow it happened. I thing, as a human, that will be your first question. But sooner enough, I realized that everything happened according to His will. I still do believe that Allah never leave us, but He wants us to be more closer to Him. A lot of realization happened to our family after my sister’s death. Allah take her because she is the best child, the best aunt, the best sister. And Allah wants us to realize that we still had another family member that we need to focus. And He wants us to trust to Him. To everyone who lost their love ones,Allah knows better.
