To hem jeans made with stretch denim fabric, wash the material first, use a denim needle, and go slow over double layers. Make a double folded hem by folding under at the hemline, pinning, turning the jeans inside out, pressing, and using a tear-away or paper underneath. Use 2 ply all-purpose or jeans thread on a bobbin and sew a normal straight stitch. Avoid pulling the fabric, as this can cause the hem to stretch out.

  • Just a warning to other viewers. This is NOT the way I would recommend hemming any pair of pants, much less jeans. There is no sewing to secure the pants. You end up with the entire excess length of pants shoved up the pant leg for all eternity. What if the leg is flared and not straight? This technique would not work at all. I think this might qualify as an emergency technique if the hem in a pair of pants fails while traveling, but that’s about it.
