To lighten denim jeans, add half a cup of bleach to your washing machine and fill it with cool water. Place your jeans in the machine and let them soak for approximately 30 minutes. Drain the water and run a cool water cycle without detergent. Air dry your jeans and assess the final result. Repeat the process if a lighter shade is desired.
To dye faded jeans, lay your jeans flat on a flat work surface and rub wax in even strokes covering the entire area. Honeycombs is a popular DIY denim fading technique used to achieve a vintage and worn-in look for denim jeans. The quickest way to lighten jeans is using a solution made out of bleach and water. Waxed denim, where denim is finished with a coating that resembles candle wax, has been popular for a few seasons.
To fix the color, soak your jeans for about half-hour in room temperature water, add 1/2 cup of white vinegar, and paint over them with a mixture of acrylic paint and a gloss varnish. This is a combination of starch and chemicals called “sizing” involved in preserving the shape of the denim.
To create a shiny or glossy effect on jeans, rinse in water and apply softener. The glossy effect will resist domestic washes at 40°C and is caused by compression and moisture (and sometimes heat). Industrially, this is called calandering, which is the way the chintz effect is added to cottons.
To create a design on a shirt, pre-wash it and allow it to dry. Use a washable craft glue to create a design, and dissolve a packet of DYLON Hand Dye in 500ml of warm water.
