Is Keto Diets Possible For Vegetarians?

Vegetarians often rely on grains and legumes for their daily micronutrient needs, but a vegetarian keto diet can help meet these needs by limiting the consumption of omega-3 fats, iron, calcium, vitamin B12, and vitamin B12. The vegetarian keto diet combines aspects of vegetarianism and keto dieting, allowing for eggs and dairy products while avoiding meat and seafood.

A vegetarian keto diet typically centers around plant-based fats and proteins, low-carb vegetables, nuts, seeds, and low-glycemic fruits. By replacing traditional protein sources like meat and fish with eggs, nuts, seeds, and tofu, a vegetarian ketogenic diet can be easily achieved. While it may require more planning and finding keto-friendly animal-free foods, there is no reason why someone who doesn’t have a vegetarian diet should not try it.

The ketogenic diet is accessible for vegetarians, vegans, and those who are gluten intolerant. It eliminates all meat while limiting high-carb foods like starchy vegetables, sugary drinks, grains, and fruits. A vegetarian keto lifestyle is possible, but it is important to be aware of potential health consequences.

A vegetarian keto diet can be achieved by replacing traditional protein sources with eggs, dairy products, nuts, seeds, and tofu. The vegan keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat, moderate-protein diet that excludes all animal-based foods.

By now, you’ve probably heart of the ketogenic diet. It’s a very restrictive regimen of low carb, high fat foods with some similarities …

Can you be plant-based and keto?

The keto diet, a popular weight management plan, has evolved from a traditional meat-heavy plan to a plant-based version. To follow the updated version, one must consume fewer than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day, equivalent to the number found in two medium-sized apples. This keeps the body in a state of ketosis, where it uses fat as its primary energy source instead of carbohydrates (sugar). The benefits of this diet include reduced belly fat, improved digestion, and reduced risk of chronic diseases.

How do vegetarians cut out carbs?

Nuts and seeds, such as almonds, walnuts, macadamia nuts, peanuts, and pumpkin seeds, are low in carbs but high in protein and fat. Soy, like tofu and tempeh, is also high in protein and fat but low in carbs. Low-carb diets have been shown to help lose weight without calorie counting, as they reduce appetite, reduce harmful belly fat, and raise HDL cholesterol. They also lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Over the past 12 years, 23 studies have shown that these diets can help individuals lose weight without calorie counting.

Can you be vegetarian and low-carb?

Vegetarian and vegan diets exclude meat, poultry, fish, and shellfish, and often include dairy, eggs, and honey. Such diets may also be high in carbohydrates derived from grains, bread, starchy vegetables, and fruits. Nevertheless, it is feasible to adhere to a low-carbohydrate vegetarian or vegan diet, with foods such as tofu, tempeh, nuts, seeds, coconut oil, and avocados offering a substantial source of protein and fat.

Vegetarians can achieve ketosis without consuming meat, seafood, or poultry, as they can build a high-fat low-carb diet with protein-packed vegetables and high-quality fats. Both diets are popular for weight loss but have different restrictions. The keto diet is a low-carb diet, limiting carb intake to near-zero, while the vegetarian diet prohibits all meat but typically allows plenty of carbohydrates from starchy vegetables and grains. Vegetarians may adopt a vegetarian diet for ethical objections to the meat industry, nutrient-dense foods, or cultural practices.

Vegan diets eliminate animal products for nutritional, environmental, or ethical reasons. The keto diet maintains low carbohydrate intake but doesn’t limit food groups as long as they fit within the carb range. Vegan diets offer short and long-term benefits, including reduced risk of chronic diseases and positive environmental impact. Keto is effective for treating epilepsy in kids and leads to rapid weight loss. However, long-term studies on keto long-term followers are lacking.

Concerns include high cholesterol, insufficient fruits and vegetables, liver fat buildup, and weight regain due to the difficulty of following keto over time. It is recommended to consult a doctor and a dietitian before choosing either diet. Weight loss dietitian Lainey Younkin helps women ditch diets and adopt healthier habits for a long-lasting lifestyle.

  • I once heard someone compare calling a vegan diet healthy (or speaking positively about it’s viability in other ways) so long as you take B12 supplements to calling the SAD healthy so long as you take statins, or something along those lines. I don’t know how a person can see people struggling to maintain a way of eating without relying on medical intervention, and still give it a “stamp of approval.”

  • What is your take on vegetables having 100’s of poisonous toxins and that all vegetables cause inflammation in the human body? Taking two of those principle toxins such as lectins and oxalates damaging the body, what do you have to say about that? What is your opinuon on the many minerals and vitamins from vegetables not being bioavailable because of the toxins and how the human body digests same?

  • Much like unicorns, I have heard of healthy vegans but I have never actually met one. Those I have met tend to present as lethargic, overweight, and depressed or otherwise mentally ‘uptight.’ And no you cannot include people who just started it – show me someone in good health who has done faithful veganism for 12+ months and if you can find that specimen, donate it to science fiction.

  • B12 for vegans is available in nutritional yeast, Nori seaweed and tempeh, where B12 is created during the fermentation of the soy beans. It is also added to staples of a vegan diet, like soy milk. So as long as vegans include some of these in their regular diet, they will be fine and do not require pill supplements. I also think that since you are not an expert on veganism, you would be better served by consulting with a nutrition science expert rather than wikipedia. Some suggestions would be Alan Flanagan, Simon Hill or Christopher Gardner, all well known in the social media space and all experts in nutrition science and plant-based diets.

  • * How can a Vegan keep their daily carbohydrates to 20gms or less/day Total 🟰 nutritional keto ?? * Why does India and Asia (where they’re predominantly vegetarian/vegan) have the highest rates of Diabetes in the world ? * Why are the animals/mammals who eat or include fatty sources of animal protein (meat/fish/seafood/eggs etc.) in their diets the most intelligent ? ✨

  • I love how studies on plant base eating (not talking about the vegan environmental and ethics) simply the eating more plants are so questioned, and not trusted, but meat research funded by meat industry keeping people sick, completely bias info is fully trusted. Eating potatoes, beans, greens and have been consumed forever but hey it’s a small sample maybe you can’t trust. But otherwise really good article for a non vegan doctor.

  • Have found most vegans to be able to live life but very few actually “Thrive” and live an optimal life. (build muscle, endurance and strength). Sad part, most people, probably 7.3 billion out of the nearly 7.9 billion people around the world don’t live an optimal life even on keto or carnivore. Most don’t have sufficient resistance training, exercise, sleep, sexual relations, sunlight, clean air, clean water, and nutrition. It is sad.

  • Since we are talking about people curing things with diet- here is my story! So everyone knows I am 46, turn 47 soon- but look like I am in my early 30’s. I am now 122lbs and 5’7″. I have done a zero carb carnivore diet for 9 months now. Before I was saved by the carnivore diet I was 165lbs (weight would continue to creep up since I was 40 years old.) And I had so many other issues that are now cured. One was i had fibrocystic issues before carnivore. It built up over a six year period of western / SAD diet. Doctors said it was normal, nothing we can do. “Part of aging and now normal.” Nope! Then I tried the Mediterranean scam grain diet for 6 months- made things worse and even put me into peri menopause and many other issues like cysts that got to be quarter size round, so painful! Fibrocystic masses too were big! I was fed up and decided to go dig and dig to see if anything would reverse this! Found Dr. Baker, Dr. Berry, and Dr. Chaffee with carnivore diet! Then found out cruciferous veggies can ruin your thyroid and prevent natural absorption of iodine found in foods! I had eaten lean skinless chicken breast (a half of one maybe once a day), rices, and broccoli for 6 years- age 40-46 and daily! I want ladies to know they need to avoid cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, asparagus, and cauliflower to prevent fibrocystic breasts- but plants in general cause it! Your body needs iodine for your lady organs and all other organs, but especially your thyroid!

  • Could you help me to understand cholesterol. I’ve been carnivoer for 15 moths, keto before that. My tri is 0.86, hdl 2.47, ldl 9.5, toltal 12.4 now my doc is calling me to tel me that my apo A1is 2.5, and apo B is 2.14. ( gone up from 1.14 ) . When I was vegan my cholesterol was 3.4, but now they saying is genetics my Ab1cis 38. Do my numbers look really bad on keto / carnivore. ?

  • Thank you for a respectful sum up, Dr. Westman! I find it very disheartening how many people love ridiculing vegans even though they have zero skin in the game (i.e. it’s not their business). I am not a vegan, yet I am well aware of the fact that with the amount of animal based food and products consumed every day there is no way it can and will be humanely produced.

  • Vegan keto – sounds like an oxymoron… If a keto diet is short for a diet, that gets you into ketosis and for most people, that means under 20 total grams of carbs… How is that possible, if you’re stuffing nothing but carbs in your face?!? Veganism/vegetarianism might lower your A1c a bit, but keto/carnivore will reverse it completely to NON-diabetic.

  • Many Vegans receive blood transfusions from Carnivores. The production of grains fruits and veg is very harsh to the environment. Follow the story of the soy sausage or burger many vegans consume. Vegan almond (milk) the impact on the environment is pretty large. However, I am not in favor of the industrialisation of animals either. Nothing like an outside grass-fed cow and remember cows enjoy living between the forest and open pasture.
