Is It Appropriate To Wear Denim At Wimbledon?

Wimbledon 2024, running from Monday 1 July to Sunday 14 July, is a popular sporting event in England. The event is known for its start of English summer, but it’s important to bring a lighter layer, such as a blazer or denim jacket, for cooler weather. For all-white attendees, a colorful cover-up can add a fun touch to their outfit.

Protocol dictates that spectators dress smartly, with a suit jacket and tie for men and a sophisticated dress for women. Women are discouraged from dressing smartly, but unless they are celebrities, royalty, or esteemed guests of the Royal Box (where jackets and ties are required for men), they may need to wear a suit jacket and tie.

For casual chic, a frilled midi skirt, cotton tee, denim jacket, and trainers can be paired with a silk camisole or boyfriend. Easy tailored pieces, pretty summer dresses, and stylish footwear are essential for a comfortable day at Wimbledon. Quiet Luxury is also a popular choice for this event.

A lighter layer, such as a linen suit, button-down shirt, and brogues, is recommended for colder weather. However, jeans are perfectly acceptable at Wimbledon, as long as they aren’t ripped or overly distressed. There is no official dress code for spectators, but it is encouraged that they wear smart casual attire.

There is no official dress code for Wimbledon, but some prohibited items related to clothing are available on the official website. For those visiting Centre Court or Court Number, dressing smartly is encouraged, especially if wearing a smart casual outfit. If you prefer a more casual yet put-together outfit, pairing your shirt or blouse with jeans, chinos, or shorts can help tone things down.

  • Ralph Lauren is one of America’s finest designers that keep the classic preppy look alive with their Polo collection. Although I love their higher end styles that you see on the runway, my clothing budget may provide a few opportunities to purchase their Polo collection. This was a valuable presentation on how we can use what we have in our wardrobes to create the Polo aesthetic. I visited their flagship store on Madison Ave. in NYC and it is an absolutely beautiful experience. Thank you for your lovely outfits.

  • My two favourite designers are Ralph Lauren and Oscar de la Renta. Their designs flatter women instead of making them (us!) look almost freakish. Understated elegance, classic cuts and colours, rarely “trendy” but always “right.” RL pieces, whether Polo or Chaps (or their more budget-friendly alternatives) are a great example of how to build a classic capsule wardrobe.

  • Thankyou gemma your fasion ideas suit 20s 30s 40s 50s and so on, just good fashion, timless fashion, elegance classy and timeless fashion, im so over FAST FASHION !!!!! i want and need this classic fashion, never goes out of style, bleesded blessed greetings from, kent england, love from bella ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

  • As a boomer, I was ” preppy ” before RL did his first full women’s clothing line in 1972 & later, LB’s ” Preppy Handbook ” pub. 1980 ! 😅 The style has always been classic – think Katharine Hepburn’s take on the menswear look decades earlier . RL blended the US east coast ” old money ” w/ the Brit. ” country / landed gentry / horsey set ” styles & later added US western for variation . Also, it goes fr. feminine to masculine or a lovely blend of both . All in all, a very relaxed, easy to interpret & duplicate & comfortable to wear . And, don’t forget to always wear your pearls – better yet if they’re a family heirloom ! 🤗

  • I adore the Ralph Lauren look. I remember being a youngster in the 90s and seeing some ads (the British countryside/equestrian look) and I knew that was what I wanted to dress like when I grew up. Now many years later as a mom and after trying other things, I am once again remembering my love for these classic, conservative looks. Thank you for showing how to get the style but on a budget! I have a brown RL cable knit sweater that I thrifted years ago but I never thought to style it with some of my lovely maxi skirts. Now I will try it!

  • 💐Gemma: Well done RL overview👍. Always such a ✨️classic, timeless, & elegant✨️ aesthetic. 💯% indulged in preppy style during my corporate days, now I need to add Contrast to dial down the formality of those suits/separates. 🤔Trend led or not, I’m kinda loving the khaki beige ✂️ cropped trench. Have a sexy black Burberry of London duster trench that I adore❤, but it’s such a heavy weight even w/o the thick liner😰. It’s perfect for 50°F, but as soon as the mercury rises🌡in LA😎 it gets put away until min. late Fall/Winter. 🛒On my 2nd hand radar is the 🪖army green field jacket. And, also now on the look out👁👁 for the full range of tan accessories (belts, bags, shoes, & riding boots). Like the properties of nude shoes to lengthen the vertical line↕️, but they tend to strike me MORE as frumpy👵dumpy. Prefer to wear all my button up shirts as a light shacket (or knotted open). ⏳️As a curvy (not obese) hourglass, buttoning & tucking is always a nightmare😱. 😘Do like the bold red cardi over the blue striped shirt. Enjoy that subtle collar, cuff, & tail “pop”. On the hunt for a red sweater vest instead〰️need a way to tone down the stripes. The grey jogger set w/the striped shirt is sporty 💫perfection💫 in my book. Sadly, the handsome herringbone pieces are a No Go for my climate😂. 🤓Watched two other stylists saying cable knits are OUT. Such a beautiful knit is NEVER out of fashion.

  • Gemma, thanks for this article. It sure was helpful. I have a lot of those shirts, trousers, jackets in the right colours but hadn’t put them together like that. I hung my blue striped shirt on a hanger with a red jacket over it and went to show my husband to see if he liked it. I got immediate approval! You must save people a lot of time and money. I am saving the article so I can go back and check on combinations again. BTW you look really good in your outfits!

  • It is an easy style to create vintage…you will find blazer at $50 and under vintage. I have many bpught over 2 decades. If I like it I buy it even if totally of style mostly Im looking forthe fabric quality suedes and velvets are my favorites. The style always clmes back arou d and I never donste these blazers NEVER because they always look great once back in style.

  • Good job. Being a Southern American girl I have always loved preppy. Unfortunately I now live hundreds of miles from my favorite Ralph Lauren outlet in the Florida pan handle. I did expect to see a link to a less expensive cropped trench coat. Also, please date your articles. Sometimes we don’t to which Spring, etc. you refer. Many thanks.
