  • The problem is that the first resort is always to fix the person when the correct way is to fix the environment. It all comes back to money and profits. If the world was less obsessed with money and growth the issues would disappear. But given that’s a little unrealistic the next approach is for management to provide a better environment, not tell employees how to deal with stress. Fix the cause, not the symptom.

  • I left my day job due to a disease called migraine. Thankfully I got them under control by working from home and don’t have to deal with all the office politics, work messages sent to me at 23:00 and stuff like that.   • Guys, the Indian workplace is a horrible place to be. It’s rife with jealousy, old fashioned beliefs, rigidity, back stabbing, overwork and little to no appreciation. But this isn’t the worst part. The worst part is no one understands squat about mental health here. It’s not even a conversation, and if you bring anything of the sort up, you’ll be fired before you can bat an eyelid. Or at the very least, considered to have a serious attitude problem. And this isn’t just true of small companies in India. I work at HSBC, and you wouldn’t believe how toxic it is here. I feel companies should place a very high value on candidates who have empathy and compassion, especially for managerial positions. Because a bad manager can give you very poor self esteem, and that should be something you can avoid.

  • I can’t say it enough. To retain employees you have to care for their well-being like it’s your own. But instead management constantly disregards the warning signs and then posts how such of a devastating loss it is to the company that the employee is literally “gone” or has departed the company. Especially from self harm. The signs are there. But only a small percentage of companies truly care.

  • As a manager I’m asked to justify company needs of working people Monday thru Saturday every damn week. Sometimes up to 60 hrs a week. And the thought of mentioning “mental health” and the fact that they’re burning out their employees is a battle that’ll end up getting me fired. Our new plant manager said, word for word, “if we have work, you WILL work. Period. End of discussion”.   • My job has taken a mental toll on me really bad. I found myself working all day without breaks and on the weekends and it seriously got me to a breaking point. When i started not enjoying the weekends with my family, couldnt concentrate on things I love because work was always on my mind, i hit that tipping point. I said to myself you live life only once, turn work off on the weekends and enjoy the time you have. It’s harder said than done, but i stuck to it.   • I’m a huge victim of social anxiety, especially in a workplace. This is not because of the fact that I live under autism, which is very common, but because I have been difficult to work with other people and I often lack self control. I tried to meditate, exercise, or think of happy thoughts, but social anxiety keeps pushing me back and it’s extremely HARD and FRIGHTENING to deal with. I don’t control my temper so much, nor do I concentrate, communicate, or behave the way other people are at workplaces. I still handle it today and I don’t have the courage to fight it. If there’s anyone who can give me advice about how I can deal with this life I’m in, please let me know.

  • Coming from personal experience, I totally agree. To send people straight to doctor and give them long day offs often doesn’t help. Have sincere talk with the employees, let them feel safe talking about the problem, and maybe discuss what could change, often serves better. A lot of time employees just need to safe place to discuss. Locking themselves in the brain is the fastest way to depression and lost of human asset.

  • There’s a certain sexiam involved in mental health and work. Women of course are more emotional and therefore require time off and understanding, but men…”pull up your boot straps and just get on with it!” Men are treated as though we have no emotions or mental health issues.   • The job I’m working at now, my boss in the job interview asked about my mental health asking “so is that all cleared up now”, to which I responded “yes”, out of fear that they’d think I’d be unreliable. Now I’m at home after having a panic attack at work and had to leave work early to look after myself. One of the managers who was looking after me didn’t understand what a panic attack was, so I had to try to explain to him while I was still showing symptoms. Not the best way to handle it but he showed his support for me which helped. It’s very difficult when there’s no openness to learning about mental health. Although my managers where fine to let me go home early, I wouldn’t have known that was ok until this happened. The reason my attack started was because I get trapped and was convinced I couldn’t allow myself to feel anything but fine.

  • Very useful article. In life there are only 2 problems–mind and the body. To feel better reduce negative thoughts. Your breathing is closely related to the brain (mind) and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming–outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations. When taking a walk, at office, in college, when reading, before sleep etc observe your breath sensations. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes–Counsellor.

  • I’m hearing you. The crux is we are conditioned to integrate in a manner that suits the work place policies and frameworks. We dont talk about human emotions and feelings. Things aren’t personalised that’s not the framework. I personally cannot live in a false and ostensible environment. Oh I’ve really tried. I had 8 jobs in 6 months why? I know it’s a false manipulative environment. So what’s the means to the end telentology. We either work or not! Think about it work all ya life acquire needs yet health declined. 50 years of work great ya an asset because your a consumer that’s great for society and major corporations. Why because you pay bills. But the end is you’ll die early maybe just before or after you retire. So what was it all about. Everything, education, competitiveness, reaching goals and social class. Mentally you became encapsulated now mentally you reflect and try to reason to justify ya journey. If successful great, if healthy mentally and physically great also. But statistics don’t lie, we are stressed and burnt out . So find what ya love and if you need to make sacrifices to live the way you were meant to.

  • I just got my first job 2 months ago and I am stuck in it for the next two years. I have so much stress and anxiety that one day it just got so much worse that I took a sick day bcs I just couldn’t bear it(I have never taken sick leaves before this all my life). It’s so stressful that I have no idea what to do. I am an introvert too so talking about my problems especially with my team is out of question. I work more than 12 hrs a day that adds to the stress. And I am stuck here for the next two years so my life officially sucks and the next two years are going to be filled with anxiety, exhaustion and sickness.

  • Companies will easily replace you in a heartbeat. So why care about them when they don’t care about you. Build up yourself. Work with a purpose of making a life for yourself. Spend your youth building a network of wealth and a family of supporters that will be with you thick and thin and about all take care of your health.   • Lovely to see such an encouragement to accept depression, anxiety, and stress. It is indeed a reality that is happening every single day inside a home or a workplace that’s why it is important to help out each other in order to get better together, to get through such a rough time together. Such an unhealthy balance of life and work has brought impactful consequences in my life and body, I am in the state to prioritize my health first as it is what I urgently need. Palpitations and hyperventilation aren’t a joke and can result in death. I’ve experienced it all. So, let’s prioritize our health more than anything, to prevent such regrets.

  • I work for a massive company here in the uk, I’m off with depression and on medication now and told my line manager and also occupational health who have referred me to CBT therapy, got a letter in last week saying I am going on half pay as before this I have ran and made excuses after excuses and took random sickness as I couldn’t face talking to my employer or anyone about what’s going on with me, now my sickness has now accumulated in just over 6 months off work in the last year which I am not proud of at all obviously, but no more lies and it’s out in the open for all to see and have half pay which brings its own stresses, just want to be better and fast.

  • Managers should be neutral with all staff..politics in the workplace is a silent issue😕sadly no one wants to tackle it. It’s hard to evidence but actions speak louder than words. Staff are breaking inside due to this toxic culture of politics/ inequality/ favouritism. Staff loose their motivation, confidence in themselves and create a negative environment resulting to stress, burnout and quitting the job.

  • I work 2 jobs. Im a VP of a Sales for a company that raises capital from investors for a high risk investment. Im also an executive chef of a fibe dining restaurant. I absolutely consume myself with work because im struggling with a lot of issues from PTSD to Complicated Grief Disorder to Bipolar disorder with constant suicidal bipolar depression. It’s worked well for the last coupke years. It’s no longer working, and I know I’ll either give in to the depression or completely break from 14 hour work days as a chef 6 days a week and spending 10-20 additional hours training sales representatives and selling clients. I feel hopeless and I’m out of options and effective ideas to stave off the suicidal thoughts and actions.

Much questions in my mind, it’s difficult when you’re in that situation and we fear that we’ll be judged and singled out. The problem is weighing up whether you speak out, or add your voice to bring up the issues or leave the place. Much other factors such as company profit obsessed culture, putting customers first. I feel as if I’ve been pushed to my limits and it’s not a great place. Sending my love to all the people in this difficult time. Choose the moral way of overcoming.

  • Unfortunately despite what they may say about work-life balance, most companies are only concerned about productivity and their bottom line. They’ll try to push you out and replace you if they perceive you as a problem. Try to take care of yourself first and prioritize that. I know we all have bills to pay some more than others. The employer (at least in the states) usually doesn’t care about your long-term well being, you’re only as good as what you can do for them. The stock price is much more important to the company than your mental health.

  • My employer doesn’t have mental health in their vocabulary, and it’s needed where I work. It needs to be a weekly conversation in our workplace. They would think I was crazy if I approached them about this. I’m ready to leave, cause I’ve been struggling with stress in my workplace, and no help resources through them

  • I am allowed 5 weeks of vacation and now in Winter I usually take it because it’s more difficult for me to get there. I try to be there as much as possible but for the last weeks I had to take 1 or sometimes even 2 days of my allowed 5 weeks. I just called my Boss to ask if I could have the last 2 days off this week. He allowed it but sounded so dissappointed in me that it makes me feel really anxious of what he and my co workers think of me. I know that I am allowed my 5 weeks a year but it looks so bad that I already take 1 day a week off also the fact that I am just an apprentice who still has to learn most stuff makes it worse.

  • We don’t talk about work / life boundaries enough. That is the problem. Companies and executives put profits before people every time. Do more with less. Work longer hours, with fewer people to shoulder the load, for the same pay with less benefits. Emails and phone calls at all hours with no thought to it being after normal working hours. There is no separation between work and life anymore. Smartphones are the modern leash that employers have around their employees necks.

  • My work life consists of being bullied, harrassed, humiliated, de humanized. Treated like a criminal. I do more work than any of my coworkers so they are very jealous of me. I am 59 years old. I love what I do. I know this is terrible to say but my work is like a concentration camp. They play incredibly mind games. My torture because of my job consist of a 12 inch scar on the back of my neck. Two 6 inch titanium rods and 14 screws to hold my neck together. My front neck has a 4 inch scar with more titanium and a titanium bracket where they put my bones that where scrapped of my vertebra so the bone could grow around my injury caused by work. I couldn’t even say anything because they would have fired me if I told them I got hurt. I got whiplash while driving a bobcat doing snow removal . I think about suicide everyday. But I won’t, I will solder on. Anyway. This is why I watched your article.😊

  • The only way this will change is if there is a typ of police for employees that hold these managers & leaders to a mental health standards. This will not stop without accountability! Simply telling them to have more empathy will not change individuals who are raised & train / conditioned to put the employees under thumb.

  • I work in a hospital and in the telecommunications section: in-house emergencies, in-coming calls, calling emergency theatre teams in, monitoring helicopters etc. Team leader is a bully and not too bright. I have 40 years experience as a touch typist, 100wpm, MS suite etc. I now have to manually colour in rosters with 5 coloured highlighters every shift, enter the same names and phone numbers over and over again. All offers of designing a more complex spreadsheet to incorporate all this data are rejected. Dumbing myself down to this level is demoralising. Have had chest pains and thought I was going to gave a heart attack, fully checked out in our own ED. Doctor asked about stressors and realised I had never made the connection to the bullying and belittling at work.

  • What he says is correct but I don’t think it will ever change In the corporate world it’s about deadlines / profits and blaming other people and nothing else. They just aren’t receptive to these things that’s why it’s normally narcissistic people who are managers or in higher up positions.   • This is a great talk. Seeing the changes mentioned in the talk in our leaders, managers, and employers would be wonderful. But there’s not much scope for the employees. Employees are still at the mercy of leaders, managers, and employers. Employees can only leave the workplace if they feel it is toxic.

  • I started a new job in November, I had been going through a really bad time mentally for a long time before starting. The new job is quite complex and I have had to work from home and learn it all remotely which has been so hard for me, my anxiety is through the roof at the moment and I have been making errors which have been highlighted- should I tell HR/my boss?

  • Your employer don’t care about your mental health. Like our company, they create environment of great stress and then they hire and pay for company shrink, only so they feel absolved from the blame of inflicting mental distress. It’s like saying: I will make you sick, but I pay for the doctor, so you should think I am a good person. It’s perversely sick. 🤢

  • I work in a place where sarcasm is the universal language. As someone who doesn’t speak sarcasm, (thank God) it becomes an extremely stressful, toxic environment. As an empathic person the “comedic jabs” hurt me more than the person who was the intended target of the comment. I’m having to leave a job and supervisor I love because I get a panic attack dealing with my coworkers and leads when the supervisor isn’t around.

  • I too feel stressed at my job. I’ve worked very hard to get where I am at my job. But yet the lack of discipline for others not doing their job is killing me. I always have disliked the person at work who acts like a “boss” when they’re really not. But now I feel like I’m becoming one of those. Today I was so stressed because before I left work I had to help out the next shift. One of the other people don’t help out like they should. I overstepped and started giving them tasks to do and obviously she was becoming irritated with me. But in order for me to leave on time they have to be set up in time. My bosses don’t really do much to help this situation although I have said many times that I feel like this certain person isn’t helping. I feel bad for being that person telling others what to do. I hate it! But I don’t know what to do. It’s ruining the relationships with my coworkers but I don’t want to be constantly behind anymore because people aren’t doing their job.

  • Your work place is deathly afraid of workers compensation or any claim They will abuse you and do everything in their power to make the abuse your own fault When in reality you held on as long as you could expecting your efforts to be appreciated They are not Do not by any means put the needs of work in front of your own

  • I’m so ashamed because I absolutely lovvveee my job and I’m really good at it but I just can’t seem to have even decent attendance. I do struggle with depression amongst other things. But I judge myself for calling in so much. I tell myself “that’s not an excuse” “you’re just lazy” “you have no accountability” “you’re irresponsible”. I just can’t do it every day. My body fiends for my bed. I work so hard for my job and I feel so fulfilled when we get a breakthrough but I just can’t do it 5 days a week.

  • AND the cramped journey to work. Studies have shown that standing upstraight with your hands on your hips for 2 minutes raises testosterone by 20%. Imagine shrinking your energy and musculoskeletal skeleton for 30 mins + on a crowded train – before you get to work each morning!! Oh God please help to enforce hybrid working as a form of social responsibility by companies, for those who prefer it, Amen

  • I have a good team I work with but due to my disabilities it’s hard especially when I’m doing studying and have a date I have to get them done by, it causes me to overthink and have panic attacks bc me having those disabilities it’s hard and you overthink if you don’t get them done by the due date your boss might think you didn’t try or are lazy even tho she 100% understands

  • There should be laws in place that employees should be able to attend medical appointments for their own well-being. Workers continually fail to attend important treatment through fear of getting sacked or upsetting the big boss. I feel trapped at work because of this and that gives me great anxiety.

  • I have worked for companies where at the end of every meeting they said does anyone have any ideas on how to save the company money. Jobs are joke now they used to have pension and retirement. That movie with the christmas bonus where he dosen’t get it chiristmas lampoon vacation LOL. We don’t have that kind of society anymore we will run ourselves to extinction its just a matter of time.

  • I started my first ever office job 9 months ago. The people are all great however I find that the actual job itself is too stressful for me. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m not intelligent enough for the work or if it just clashes too much will my personality. I just know I can’t carry on in this position. Anyone else experience this?

  • The impression i’m really starting to get at 1 job site is they do not want you to succeed period. My mind is on what i think is the companies focus is productivity/effeciency yet the impression i’m getting is they want you to fail its like they are taking it personally when you are being successful period & they arent worried about the company at all but how they personally feel emotionally feel. I am also starting to get a a feeling theres some sadism in the mix too like they are very happy to make their employees miserable

  • I’ve already told my leadership about the stress one of them is causing. Went from two understanding and encouraging me to go to therapy while the third one continues to stress me out, to two acting like I’m a visitor passing through when they see me and the third one continues to stress me out. The whole time, I’m just like “🙉make her stop. I wouldn’t be stressed out and need to go to therapy if you addressed the cause of my stress (the third boss’s behavior).” I can’t even talk to her without her retaliating in some way. She doesn’t listen, she does what she wants to do, she doesn’t care what other people are going through, how they feel, what they think, or how her actions/decisions are stressing the rest of us out. Stress is a symptom of something, just like pain, itching, and grogginess are symptoms of something. Address the cause properly and the symptoms go away.

  • Yes, work stress is killing specially when you work like a donkey and a few get paid for doing nothing. when they are hired at a very high remuneration without any experience, skills, education, work ethics just based of the color of skin. And continuously achieving pay rise, benifits appraisals for satisfying other needs of the directors.

  • Some employees refuse to look for mental health when is extremely clear that they need it. The person I work with even admit that ther’s something wrong with her head which is: “excess of water on one side of the head” 🤔🚩 Meanwhile they make the life of others miserable. Refuse to follow the rules of the company and simply do whatever the heck she want it. Interrupt others, take constant breaks, when is on her desk she is making noises like ugh, deep impatient type of breathe, whisper, and act like she is tired of the BS, slam papers at the desk, keep digging into her drawers or bags. Is laud and desperate for attention (in my opinion). She admits that she need medical help just to shut everyone up but is not doing anything to change it. To put the cherry on top she don’t believe in psychology. Is toxic and it should be a way to get this people help without putting the life of the other employees in a mental state too. Is like dragging everyone around down.
