How To Use Color Palettes To Match Outfits?

The color wheel is a circular diagram of colors arranged according to their chromatic relationship. By understanding the color wheel, sticking to a color palette, adding neutral colors, experimenting with prints and patterns, and knowing when to break the rules, you can create outfits that are both harmonious and visually appealing.

To match colors in your outfits, start with analogous colors, embrace complementary colors, and wear accessories that don’t “match”. Neutral colors are important as they add balance and harmony to your outfits and can be paired with any bright, soft, or primary colors. However, it’s essential to match cold neutral shades with cold shades of other colors and vice versa.

Complementary color schemes are when you take colors from opposite ends of the spectrum and pair them for a bold look. Complementary colors are on opposite sides of the clothing color wheel, such as red/green, yellow/purple, and blue/orange. To create a split-complementary color scheme, pick a color and pair it with the colors next to its complementary color. This method requires a good eye and some practice.

Learning basic color matching rules and principles will help you create well-coordinated outfits daily, whether you prefer neutrals or bold hues. By following these steps, you can create outfits that are both visually appealing and functional.

  • The best color theory article I’ve ever seen 🎉 Thank you so much for putting it all together. Your perspective completely changed the way I see relationships between colors. I ended up ordering a color wheel for artists and spending a few hours exploring color theory ❤ This article is a must watch for both beginners and pros!

  • This is the third vlog I have watched, and now I understand why I am getting confused with the way you use the word ‘tone’. Tone in colours reflect the undertone in the dye, which is either red/yellow/blue while Shade, to me is the amount of colour omitted/increased by the addition of black or white. So if I wore cream trousers with a buttery yellow undertone, that would not work with a cream sweater with an ice blue undertone, as I am warm toned.

  • I know that blue and red are not complementary colours, but I think they look fantastic together. Adhering rigidly to the colour wheel is so limiting and frustrating. For example, I have loads of navies and blue shades in my wardrobe. However, I have no orange accessories to pair with the blues, because I prefer red. Furthermore, I’m aware that red and green are complementary colours, but unfortunately, Christmas springs to mind.

  • 10:59 another thing here is… say you have a brown bag… browns can have different color tones, like leaning towards burgundy or leaning towards an orange for example… so a brown bag that is lore orange leaning would probably look great with this outfit where another brown might look hideous or just plain with no pop.

  • I love all of your color articles! I have been doing a version of this as i love contrasts and accents, but I see i could do more! Since ditching hair dye and going naturally gray/salt and pepper, i am more careful about color around my face. I add accent colors to help, plus lip color helps! I look forward to seeing more articles, I’ve subscribed! I love your style.

  • I like complementary color schemes, but I create them only with the muted, light colors I wear. This is much easier because all light colors have plenty of white in common, and all muted tones have a hint of black in common; muted or soft colors have pale gray in them, in other words. I love pinks and green together, especially. A soft pink, or coral for those with warmer coloring, always looks good with khaki green, a favorite Soft neutral of mine. So long as it doesn’t approach “Christmassy”, many reds and greens work together, if in the same undertone, either cool or warm. I use color in my home decor, which I love, as well as in my wardrobe. My favorite decorated room ever, is an English one in cooler reds/pinks and soft greens, it’s lovely.

  • Have a professional on the show then tell her she is WRONG several times saying NO? I like that, my gawd she is just there to tell you what his BEST for your features colours wise! there is NO right or wrong, Guthrie BE QUIET! I hate shows that have on guests for segments and rush them off CONSTANTLY its rather dumb. cooking segments constantly never finish so whats the point you learn nothing. I cannot stand SG period so I dont watch, this popped up re colour palette so i wanted to watch, BUT THIS segment Guthrie could have cared less so why have her BE apart of it? jeezuz program directors etc pay attention.

  • I cannot tell if I am a clear winter or clear spring. I have dark hair extremely pale skin, warm hazel eyes and black eyebrows and eyelashes and warm freckles and bright pink lips. I look good in lighter lipsticks and dark kohl on my eyes. Cool red darker nails make my hands look bad and pink. I look good with pale pink nails, my hands look yellow and healthy. I rock gold and tolerate silver but it is not as flattering as gold. I have the palest skin I have ever seen. I look much more beautiful when i fake tan.
