  • hey, I wanted to clear up some things that I failed to explain properly in the article— I am a digital minimalist, not a minimalist. they are different things. digital minimalism = using technology intentionally, and not losing oneself to the endless scrolling/ and the negative side effects surveillance capitalism has caused all of us. there are a few approaches to mitigating this, my current one is based around single use-technology, hence the different devices. I have experimented a lot and found that this is the best solution for me. I fear that I unintentionally promoted mindless consumerism in this article, which was not my intention. I genuinely find value in these things, and they enhance my quality of living and make doing things easier. technology is both my vocation and my hobby, I find a lot of tech interesting and wanted to show others who might be interested. most of the devices I have owned and no longer use have found a new home, they don’t sit around collecting dust. thanks for the support over the years guys, and sorry I haven’t been posting much. I have an upcoming article regarding the software I use on each device. hope everyone who is starting school will have a fruitful semester. cheers.

  • the only way i can explain my reasoning for coming back to watch james every time is because he is so unapologetically him. he find his own little niche, and just has the best taste. my study/career has little to do with technology but hearing the passion and research that goes into finding every little thing that works is inspiring. you really have made an impact on people globally james

  • One of the few websites where the creator is not interested in posting a article every day (minus those long study session articles), not having an opinion on every single thing, and is busy living their own life and drops a article once in a while telling us all that they are alive and well and still using a QWERTY keyboard phone. Like many others, I found your website during the pandemic, but not during those “Study with me” sessions, but because I was searching for dumb-phone reviews. Amazingly your article gave me the validation that you can do something totally different (using a Rotring pencil whose paint is getting chipped off, or a fountain pen, with a dumb phone in the pocket) and still be a good engineering student. But, if I minus my personal feelings after perusal your articles, I would say why I love them is that they show you as human who is grinding, doing their best, finding their own spot. Which is great. Please be like this forever!! May your dreams come true!

  • Is it me or does JVS seem happier? I appreciate you talking about the devices and how you connect their uses together. I always get anxious that I have too many devices because as a DevOps Engineer by day and tech enthusiast by night I get excited to incorporate new tech to help keep me motivated to improve my productivity. So thank you again for sharing!

  • Why do you buy so much useless tech toys, I think it is actually anti productive. Issue is with software most of the time, phones or laptops as they are currently are fine. I feel productivity also comes with spending less money. Just how productive underpowered n100 sub laptop can be. I know these kind of umpc’s, they look cool but actually suck to use! Also lol tf your friend is doing.

  • Yo I had no idea you still had a website. I followed your livestreaming one back during covid and just never knew you switched websites. Your stuff really inspired me back in the day, I read all the books you recommended and it totally turned my life around. Thanks to the stuff I learned and the inspiration I got from you I achieved a lot of things I never thought I’d be able to do. I became fluent in Japanese using the study methods you mentioned, built a successful youtube website, studied abroad, and I’m about to graduate college with (almost) straight As. The article you made called “Why I work so hard” used to play in my head on repeat. I don’t think I’d be where I am today without that article… thank you!

  • Man I found myself like constantly perusal your content recently. The way you don’t use what other comp sci students use and use “niche” tech instead is really interesting to me. I recently ordered my first thinkbook (x390) and Im looking forward to installing Linux on it and trying it out. Also question, what version on Linux should I install? Im between Mint since its good for beginners and Kali because I want to go into the cybersecurity field. If you have any advice I’d really appreciate it. Thank you for the amazing content! Update: I installed Linux Mint

  • Idk… You’re still using a smartphone and laptop. Just buy something that would last you for decades and downgrade it software wise. Like get yourself a powerful Laptop/tablet and deinstall and deactivate everything you don’t need and want. Put on matt screen protectors. With the money you already spent for all these devices and will in the future because as you said, they are already potato, you could buy something long lasting instead. It’s more environmentally friendly aswell. While downgrading and minimizing you ended up with even more devices.

  • In no world this is “digital minimalism” lol. The amount of senseless devices you have… Just admit you like having that stuff and that’s all, don’t cover it with “being productive” or minimalism. Why is it so important to justify that you want to be different for the sake of being it? No hating, but come on man. You just have gadgets.

  • I don’t really understand how any of these things make anything more productive? A flip phone is less distracting though. A normal laptop doesn’t take any space, and you could remove reading completely to audio books, then you can do other stuff at the same time. But you have a strong hair game for sure!

  • This feels off for some reason. He has a blackberry phone for ssh (just because it has a physical keyboard), a flip phone for GPS, a mini laptop/netbook and a macbook air for work, 2 different e-readers with different sizes. He could have done all of the above with just one or 2 proper devices. It kinda feels like digital hoarding if I’m being honest here.

  • Oh yeah I remember perusal a article about you like a few years ago using retro tech to curb your addiction to tech. My thought were, “he’s legit just doing a fad hack and is going to be back on regular tech because this is kinda overkill in an obtuse way.” I still think that, but hey, gotta respect a man who sticks to his guns regardless of sensibility. If it makes a positive impact than keep on chugging. Good to see you’re still doing it. I mean I wouldn’t but we all are different man.

  • when you were talking about the typewriter under your pillow to write and journal, saying the romanticism it has. ❤ i adore the importance you give to beauty, i love seeing you through the years, i know you didn’t elaborate on the spiritual journey but the fact that you mentioned it fulfills my heart so much and hopefully will inspire others too. its a grandiose sphere of life. loved the clips walking around the street also 🙂 what a big jump, this really is your new season 🫂🫶

  • so basically, you can buy a tablet/ipad. it has everything included in this article. especially when you add a keyboard and mouse. you can call on it, draw on it, write notes, research, use gps, play games, listen to music. i respect your tech, but having one device for everything is so much easier, especially for saving space.

  • I really enjoy the way you find ways to make technology, like the handheld to become useful to progress. I never imagined seeing a handheld for Anki, or had the thought that consuming that kind of media is also connected with learning language. I understand that this requires a lot of thinking and experimenting that I don’t do enough of.

  • Every time I watch one of these articles I make a small change towards reverting back to more simple tech. Getting rid of my smartphone is the next step, after already deleting all social media (except YouTube) and removing all entertainment apps (except YouTube haha). Seeing that he’s working on apps and starting a company with tech that essentially just does the job is very inspiring

  • great to hearing you again James! I just graduated from university and I wanna say thank you, during pandemic you saved me from drop out :> I worked with your live stream a lot, your consistency keep me awake and helped me to improve new and clear mindset about my life-even myself. your voice mean a lot to me. Thanks for being yourself, thanks for give me exciting about living and teaching me lot of thing James. -ruveyda

  • Ok. I deleted my first comment. I think because we are close in age, I find you even more admirable. In the past many months, I have improved a lot, and it is partly thanks to the kind of ideas I learned from the articles you’ve posted. I think it’s cool how you seem to take action and are determined to not be swept up in distractions. It’s very different from the behavior I see around me.I think intentional usage of technology is very important. Especially being on the internet. I hate when I get distracted. Everything you consume stays in your consciousness. I think it’s important to be careful of what you spend your energy and space in your brain on when being online. I don’t watch your articles a lot, just as needed, because I want to be careful of living vicariously because I am dissatisfied with myself. Seeing this article, gave me a boost of energy/inspiration. I think it can be helpful to know how others live because we can inspire each other and exchange ideas. It’s cool that you are such a positive influence close to my age.

  • I dont know how and why but im too down i mean bottom rock emotionally and mentally he upload a article and its a ray of hope for me that he is working hard toooo dont loose hope just flow with the process but that heaviness on my heart sometime i cant endure even,,,, thanxx james from the bottom of my heart for everythinggggg

  • Thank you very much for the article. I think many who have been perusal you for a long time know that you are not a thoughtless consumer. I have been perusal you for quite a long time and whenever I am interested in the technologies that you use, I cannot find them in my country😅 Since the moment I started perusal you, I have been waiting for a article about software for devices, since I am a developer myself. So I am glad that you finally decided to make it.

  • tech i used to stay productive 1:400 dollar herman miller chair to protect my back 2:very good desk from ikea,go to ikea and try them to see what fit you 3:my room is equipped with both heater and cooler AC(nobody in europe use cooler and die from heat, how can i be productive when drenched in sweat?) 4:asus flow x13(r9 7940hs-32gb ram-rtx3050) to work 5:i5 10600k,gtx 1080 pc to hang out with my bros.Switch connected to a esp 32 that send sms to my bros,we checkour progress. If we are finished,we play games but the PC will go cold turkey after 11pm

  • James, thank you so much for continue posting your articles. It honestly doesnt really matter if it’s a study with me article or a article about your desk setup, all of it is going to be entertaining and useful as soon as it is you who is filming. I can’t wait to see more of your ideas, you’re so interesting and unique. I dont know how to explain this feeling but perusal your articles feels like either perusal a short film or listening to a close friend. Hope your mental health is doing well. (techs are great and they look really good, havent heard about at least half of them 😭)

  • This doesn’t seem like productivity. It just feels like you have purchased a new device at any opportunity. There’s nothing wrong with that, and that’s after reading your pinned comment. Nothing wrong with being a tech enthusiast. But you are still losing yourself through the endless scrolling, just across different devices that you use for single purpose, a lot of which could be consolidated. Like the Pomera DM250 (aka romanticizing journaling as you put it) Maybe nothing is being surveilled but it’s very much a consumerist setup with everything that I’ve seen, moreso than the average user.

  • After perusal your articles I tryed and found a desk setup for myself for the longest time you’ve been an inpiration to push forward. This year is my final year at school im gonna graduate in 2025 and go to uni for Computer engeneering. Lately i’ve started to lose my edge so thanks for keeping me accountable. Wish you luck with your new projects James.

  • Hey james can you make a list of all the previous gear you used on the gear website since i want to know what all monitors and keyboards you used before . Like i wanna know the monitor you used back in 2020 and 2021 the dell one and the apple monitor which i wanna know the name of and any other screens.

  • i really love your articles.i love how genuine you are, the vibe you give off. it inspires me to try to be genuine too. i think you are not aware of the great value of what you do. your articles are the ones i look forward to the most. even if i have to wait for months and it lasts a few minutes. your articles make me very, very happy. thank you james. i have only gratitude and good wishes for you. i hope all goes well for you and the people you love. a big hug ❤

  • Elite levels of hipster. Needs to minimize space so uses 12 different outdated pieces of tech instead of a single modern one. All jokes aside, I respect how you are able to keep different aspects of your life separate, which allows you to focus on them individually. Very easy to get sidetracked nowadays. Thanks for sharing

  • Cool stuff here. Looking to add a minicomputer I can take with me anywhere. I still use my Key2LE for email and social communications, some light edits/coding (via github app), and paired with a Surface Duo (with a Bluetooth keyboard). That one I use with an Android IDE app (closest to VS code I can find was called SPCK editor)

  • I’d rather just buy the GPD mini notebook with OCuLink (Win Max 2 2023 if I’m correct) which is almost the same size as the Chuwi and the OneNetbook you own. For one it can dock to any eGPU at the lowest cost possible (at least for now)-enabling you to play more demanding titles or do graphics-intensive works like training AI models. No need to buy more laptops once this one is bought!

  • you said your battery life degraded 3:32, its easy to replace batteries! you could even make a article about it. 🙂 could even upgrade laptops with m.2/ storage/ ram or other stuff? If you need it? ((I’ve got an old pavilion laptop that i use for work and benefited from upgrading myself, honestly just by upgrading a dying battery you can see a lot of CPU performance gains ))

  • How are you liking the chuwi, in general and with Linux? I was thinking about getting one and installing Debian/Ubuntu or fedora but have seen in general Linux has some issues(screen and sleep) and then seen some people saying it doesn’t last. One blog post had WiFi quit after 4 months and having hinge issues. Its the perfect size, price and performance for my little work use case.

  • I’ve found my Surface Pro 7+ filled so many niches. I have to have my (not great) work laptop with me most places, and for all my personal stuff as well as planning (and this youtube comment) is usually easy with this. Very portable so always on hand It’s even better with my Logictech MX Anywhere 2S mouse with carry case most of the time. A good mouse is a breath of fresh air when you’re sick of track pads. I also carry two pocket sized Moleskine notebooks now. One with to-do items and notes (incl work) and the other is strictly for ideas I have, things I want to improve, or things I think I should buy. I loved my Pentel P205 mechanical pencil that carried me through high school and college (now I have a new one). But I more typically carry my Rortring 800. Really liked the Blackberry you shared. I miss mechanical keyboards. I also loved the Pomera device you shared. I miss simplicity. I wish I could have the utility of my smartphone when I need it, but a dumbphone with only specific applications (music, maps, text, audio) 90% of the time. Hoping Apple’s Assistive Access mode will mature so I can just leave that on most of the day

  • My brother, if love your Moondrop Katos, jump to the Moondrop Dusk. Katos were my go-to for years for some reason. Once I upgraded to the Dusk(stock tune/analog cables) I fell in love again. It seems a lot of people prefer the DSP cable’s presets, but their direct tune using a normal cable I absolutely love lol.

  • When you started talking about laptops I thought man, you’re like the Linux version of me haha… I have a Macbook Air 2012 which I had 16gb of RAM soldered onto over the manufacturer 8. It’s the 11 inch model and I use it precisely because portability is SO IMPORTANT TO ME in a laptop! Everyone else thinks I’m crazy but I love the old netbook form factor.

  • I finished college with a diploma in computer programming got hired almost right away as a data analyst worked my way up to a software dev role. Then got laid off 1 yr into the job. It’s been a month I’m completely depressed and unproductive. Binging yt and random shit all day long. I wake up at 12 or 1pm. I feel like I don’t even know how to code everyone seems so advance. I feel like I can’t compete and with how things are in the current market I’ll never land a job. Super super depressed idek what to do. On top of that I have zero social life zero friends… life sucks

  • Just a quick question. I see you use a lot of devices and you keep switching to others, experimenting with new ones etc. How do you manage to migrate all the time from one to other? Or maybe you just keep temporary files/books/music/contacts on each and the important stuff is elsewhere. For me (similarly having multiple devices around) it’s sometimes annoying that the file that I am looking for is on another device, maybe even on another location. PS.: trying to cut down on the number of devices atm

  • Hi, I fell in love with your articles I usually re-watch some of your articles and I fell in love with Linux because of you and since I’m going for software engineering I wanted to ask you which Linux is best for beginner because I see that my windows is bagging a lot and I am not fan of that so yeah I saw you are using a lot of Linux so If you see this comment I would be glad if you can help me and yeah continue grinding on your work!!

  • Man, you should upload more. I know this has been said like so many times that it is most probably tiring by now, but honestly, you have been the only person I actually like perusal. It feels like sharing a life (don’t mean anything weird lol) and perusal you doesn’t feel like perusal other people (who are way too deep into this social stuff). I don’t consider you a social influencer, but the fact remains that you ARE an influencer, someone who influenced the life of many, in a positive way. And yes, I mostly enjoy your aesthetic (no matter how archaic and ancient it may seem to others lmao). Maybe do more of those chill streams and articles you used to do years ago? I know you are out of college now and have many things to worry about, but yeah, I hope we see you more!

  • Please make a article on which company you are working and what kinda things you do as your part of the job. How do you feel about the job and what’s your main career goal…for example your ultimate goal might be to become a software engineer or cyber security expert etc etc. Also if possible what’s your thought on the best career for future as a computer science student. Please make a article on this topic…. please please please ❤

  • Does whatever this is exist as a hobby or community? Because I find a lot of people including myself go through this journey of finding the most minimal yet functional tools or finding the best systems to find an optimal workflow, but I struggle to find more content creators or just others in general who are interested in this specifically.

  • Love your shit brother, what was the image of the family at the end of the article? The man in the centre reminds me of Yuval Noah Harari, but I might just also be insane. Currently studying to enter university, study physics and using arch linux and dumbphones is much nicer than my previous setup, no matter how hard I have fallen for the meme
