📹 How I Turned My Mac into a Productivity Machine
Here are the most useful macOS productivity tips – helping you get way more done, in way less time. Enjoyed the video? You’ll …
ShareX is an amazing tool, and incredibly useful, but you should know that by default it will automatically upload all the screenshots you take anonymously to Imgur, because in the screenshot capture workflow it has “upload image to host” turned on by default. If you’re screenshotting sensitive information, you should disable this by going to “preferences-> advanced -> disableUpload” and set it to “true”
THANK YOU! The basic utility of QuickLook is exactly what I have been missing since I sold my Mac and built a PC. Absolutely key for photographers. I LOVE that I can pin the window and use arrow keys to navigate. This is going to make looking through my SD card after a photoshoot so much easier. I’m ashamed that I used to open dozens of Paint 3D windows just to view each photo.
F.Lux isn’t really needed anymore since Windows has a native night light function built in. You can turn it on and off set it’s schedule and intensity in the windows notification centre. Night light also properly covers all of windows instead of flux which just runs an overlay (your cursor isn’t covered by flux whereas nightlight is)
Thanks for the tips, I’ve been using flow launcher for months now, it is awesome, but there is something wrong with my PC which always pisses me off, the launcher doesn’t startup on login always And also, I highly recommend levelling up your typing speed if you wanna be more productive in front of your PC
For automation nothing beats Autohotkey, nothing even comes close. It can re-map keys, send strings of keystrokes, detect the colour of a specific pixel on the screen, detect whether a file or folder exists, detect whether a window exists, detect the state of a window (maximised, minimised, hidden, etc), move and copy files or directories, recycle or delete files, open files, execute programs (with or without parameters), and a lot more. And the best part is it can be triggered to do different things (or nothing at all) depending on context, like which window is active, the colour of the screen at a specific point, whether a file exists, whether a window exists, and so on. It’s also free and open source. I reckon this program has saved me millions of keystrokes and mouse clicks over a lifetime.
So I use Powertoys, a set of utilities for Windows that tremendously improves my productivity. I mainly use it for its Powertoy Run util, because I love the ability to launch programs, do calculations or just even put my PC to Sleep Mode with text commands, instead of going to the Start Menu. It’s based on Wox. However, Flow Launcher (8:10) can control Spotify with the Launcher..? AND it’s more customisable? I think you just made me switch apps. Thanks for that.
Notion looks really interesting. Been using OneNote but Notion looks easier…. So if you like quicklook, you can activate something similar in windows 10 in file explorer under the view ribbon. Second from left on the view ribbon is the Preview Pane button. You can also change the content display of that folder, like large icons for images or a detail list with file meta data, with the buttons to the right of that. (Which you can scroll through by holding the control key and scrolling the mouse wheel.
I can tell you from 20 years of experience, that windows app everyone must have (also all are free) PowerToys – Absolute must, its the swiss army knife of tools. Ditto – Clipboard manager PatchMyPC – update manager | or simply use powershell win-get Share X – snapshot tool Davinci Resolve – article editing Discord – communications OneNote – note taking app, cross platform, no limitations And there are also QOL small tools like f-lux and others, but the basic ones should cover most of the needs.
I mean. What can I say. I came here because I was about to purchase a paid snapshot tool because snip and sketch just doesn’t cut it for me. And I ended up installing 5 new apps and spending hours and hours configuring everything. You literally got me so excited. All these shortcuts!!! I love what you do and you are my new favorite YouTuber. Yup. I’m just happy I’m straight, because otherwise I’d still be fantasizing about you even now when I’m about to go to bed! Thanks 😛
Quick Look can be replaced by just clicking the file you want to open and pressing alt+p . Also flow launcher is just one feature of the amazing PowerToys that also has the always on top option of sharex but you can do it with any app(i.e file explorer). I am surprised that powertoys isn’t in this list. the everything app is an elegant solution but you can just change the file explorer settings and get done with it. I liked this article and i hope that the preevious things that i wrote are more like ideas for a next article and (i want to believe) constructive critisism. Good article this one was it.
If you’re locked from installing third party apps, there is an OCR function in OneNote. Paste the image there, right click, copy text from image, paste. X-mouse to control extra buttons on a mouse (even per program if you like) also sweet. Can have middle wheel click to paste system wide, but in autocad be default (pan) and have a side button HIDEObjects another UNHIde
Don’t use edge. Use Vivaldi. It has more features than Edge, which is impressive, built for productivity, more private albiet not FOSS, and has everything on Chrome on Edge. Yes, vertical tabs. SPLIT SCREENING FOR VERTICAL TABS AND JUST THE TILING- WEB PANELS! LITERALLY- okay that’s all i’ll say- But ye it’s not as built into Windows. I used Edge for a while.
Edge also has a very capable text to speak function. With tons of different voices that actually sounds great and professional. I do not remember if I added extra voices to windows and that’s why I have loads of alternatives. I like the Irish lady voice clear and calm. It’s good that you can listen to an article while doing other stuff, like art or food for example
I gotta say that this is the first productivity content dedicated to Windows users I’ve seen in a long time. Kudos for that! Thanks a lot. All the other guys in YT use only Mac, but here in my country (Brazil), the vast majority of people use Windows, since Apple products are ridiculously expensive and unaccessible
Hi, Thomas! Thank you very much for such a useful content i was looking for 🙂 You bring good to people’s lives. Actually, i was wondering about what you think about God and His religion, because such a light person like you seems to be inclined towards belief in God and the right path for life. If that is the case, i would be glad to invite you to the true religion of Moses, Jesus, Mohammed and other messengers of God Almighty (peace be upon them) which is islam. Thank you one more time, i ask God to guide you to the right path 🙌
Enjoyed all but confirming I love EVERYTHING. All my files for years, start with year and client name, so I can see all my 2009 Pfizer files in a tenth of a second with Everything for example. I have thousands of scientific pdfs all include Vol_Page in the title. So if I know an article is Vol 35 p 2255 I can see 35_2255 in a tenth of a second wherever it is. Super.
I have a gaming keyboard and mouse from Logitech; with it I can predefined hotkeys or macros. By using Logitech G Hub Application, when you I switch between applications my mouse and keyboard functions and rgb colors switch per application automatically. Feature is meant to work while switching in between games but I use it with all other applications.
Edge brought ever 2 more awesome productive option which is edge-bar and sidebar. and also, many other things have been included. only I just didn’t like the fact that edge removed a useful feature “live caption” which chrome already have and added it to windows 11 instead. So, I can’t use this feature in win 10 (well still can manage, no need to switch to chrome for this little feature)
Thomas I have been following you for a couple of years but to be honest this type article so life changing one that I can’t thank much that you deserved but you mention about flow launcher and espanso these are good to use, espanso requires some basics knowledge about coding but I don’t know how to run a yaml file so I can’t use to it potential and flow launcher I can’t integreta it to notion . I hope who may do a tutorial about it soon .
This article came in the right time… as I’m trying to expand my YouTube content, and started on writing a novel, I wanted to have some good apps to help increase my productivity and make my workflow smoother… I work on a Windows laptop and an iPad and this article came in the absolutely perfect time… Thanks Thomas!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Can you recommend a good app that makes it super easy to make websites? There used to be one in Windows. You could make changes in document format and click a seperate tab where if you wanted to see/edit the actual code.I would also be interested in an app that can copy an entire website from the Internet and store locally.
Incredible person who is reading this. Want to let you know that EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT. Blessings upon blessings come to you daily. Everything you need it’s on its way to you! Bless you always with everything great you deserve. You are greatness! ~❤️Nat
You might like Ditto clipboard manager. It gives you an option to make the “clip” you copied a “sticky” so you can always quickly access it. The only thing I have to frequently type in is my email adress so Espanso would be overkill for me, but a sticky in Ditto is similar. Thanks for the list Thomas.
Good evening. Can you make overview for Obsidian? I am very interesting to this program, but when I see how you use Notion, I understand it is very good additional program for other tasks, which prefer using for unload my braid of routine tasks, make plans for study or personal projects. Obsidian going to use for short notes, which want never forget and sometime use it in future. Zettelkasten method very interesting, but I am still thinking about templates which I want to use. Joplin also looks like good, but I think it is better for team, not for personal. Maybe somebody has other opinion?
my version of this article for Linux: 1. (Smart ScreenShot) : FlameShot 2. (File Previewer sidebar) : ‘head’ command or Ranger File Manager (terminal) or Nautilus + GNOME Sushi 3. (Knowledge Management System): Trillium Notes (open source Notion alternative) 4. (Web Browser) : Firefox 5. (Smart ClipBoard Manager) : CopyQ 6. (command/app launcher) : Cerebro or Rofi 7. (Text Expander) : Espanso (cause its opensource and runs on linux) 8. (Fast Search Tool) : terminal{ locate(similar to find, but has the speed of everything search via an index) * mlocate(has cron job scheduled to update filesystem index and can be manually updated with updatedb (may need sudo privileges) Locate but better and more updated) }, or Recoll 9. (Cloud Drive) : Nextcloud 10. (Blue Light Filter) : RedShift Hope you have a great day & Safe Travels!
you could’ve mentioned Ukraine at least in the beginning, just a few words. Even if you don’t care about politics and even if this website isn’t about it at all. If it was Canada, England or Australia you would’ve done it and if it’s about some country far away then Americans don’t care at all. A lot of Ukranians watch your Russian (translated) website as well, if you didn’t know.
