Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies students and alumni have employed these strategies to manage a healthy personal and professional life simultaneously.
When pursuing a master’s degree, it is important to consider the impact on your partner and family, especially if you are caring for elders or children. Talk to your partner about taking on more responsibility at home and who can help if the burden is too heavy. Enrolling in a graduate program is a great way to advance your career, so ensure your partner and family understand this objective and support your decision.
How do I stop feeling boring while studying?
To mitigate the potential for boredom during the FMGE preparation period, it is advisable to plan your objectives, identify an optimal study location, avoid becoming overly comfortable, diversify your subject matter, prioritize active study periods, incorporate brief intermissions, take notes during preparation, and offer yourself positive reinforcement. The FMGE is a licensure examination that necessitates meticulous and assiduous preparation. Consequently, many candidates perceive the process of studying to be tedious and monotonous.
How to prioritize your hobbies?
Prioritizing your time is crucial for pursuing your passions and hobbies. This involves setting realistic goals, scheduling regular time for hobbies, combining your passions with other activities, and making them portable. Engaging in hobbies that bring joy and fulfillment can help reduce stress and prevent burnout. Neglecting hobbies can lead to feelings of boredom, dissatisfaction, and depression. To connect with your passions and hobbies despite a busy lifestyle, follow these tips:
- Set realistic goals: Prioritize your hobbies and set realistic goals.
- Schedule regular time for hobbies: Schedule regular time for hobbies and make sure to combine your passions with other activities.

How to juggle between work and study?
The article provides six tips for balancing work and study:
Explore workplace support, as employers may be more accommodating than you realize. Discuss your study goals and ask about available options like employer-funded training, study leave, flextime, job sharing, or reduced hours. Consider taking annual leave in smaller chunks to cover assignments, exams, or practical training times.
Prioritize commitments, re-ordering your current activities and priorities. Be clear before starting studying on non-negotiable and nice-to-do activities, including personal, family, work, and social commitments. It’s okay to say ‘no’ or reduce involvement to meet your goals. Remember why you’re doing it and take time to work through these steps to make the most out of this season of your life.
How do you balance studying and having fun?
Prioritize tasks based on their importance and due dates to maintain focus and better retention of information. Choose classes to work on each day of the week to stay focused and ensure enough time for schoolwork. Use a day planner to schedule specific blocks of time daily for schoolwork and schedule fun time for occasional breaks. Consider when you do your best work when scheduling schoolwork, such as in the afternoon or evening when you’re most energized.
Use “if-then” planning to trigger schoolwork, but also set deadlines for yourself. This approach helps build lasting habits and ensures that you complete tasks on time. Examples of this type of thinking include setting specific times for tasks like working on math homework, studying for exams, or starting homework for next Monday. By following these strategies, you can create a more organized and effective approach to schoolwork.
How to balance work, study, and hobbies?
Achieving a school-work-life balance is crucial for a college student’s success and well-being. To achieve this, it is essential to be organized, communicate with family and friends, maintain a healthy lifestyle, practice mindfulness, dedicate time to hobbies, set limits, be kind to yourself, and take breaks. Focusing on one area too much can lead to negative consequences, such as working extra shifts to earn extra cash but not dedicating enough time to studying.
Sacrificing personal time for a successful career and student life can negatively impact mental and physical health, leading to subpar academic performance and poor performance in professional settings. By focusing on these aspects, students can achieve a balance that benefits both their academic and personal lives.
How do you manage the balance between academic and personal life?
To achieve a successful academic and personal life, prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, plan free time, choose a quiet workspace, and seek support when needed. Creating a work-life balance is crucial, especially when starting a new degree, especially when moving to a new country with new friends, hobbies, and potential jobs. Overemphasizing studying may lead to a loss of social life and hobbies, while excessive social activity may negatively impact grades. It is essential to find the right balance between academic and personal life to ensure a successful academic journey.
How to make studying less miserable?
To make studying more enjoyable and motivating, it’s essential to reward yourself with healthy snacks, such as sliced fresh fruit, dried fruit, or nuts. If reading a difficult text, buy Skittles or Maltesers and eat them at intervals down the page. Book things to look forward to for your time off, such as meeting up with friends or going to the cinema to see a film.
When studying a work of literature, seeing a film adaptation of the book is not a substitute for reading the book. However, if you take a critical approach, you can call this session “studying” by assessing the film’s cast, ensuring it does justice to the book, and identifying changes and retaining the book’s essence.
Reading Harry Potter in another language can make learning more enjoyable by allowing you to familiarize yourself with the plot and characters, making it easier to grasp the language itself. By doing so, you can make studying more enjoyable and enjoyable for you.

📹 how to balance school & extracurriculars ⏳ a time-management guide
This was kind of all over the place because time management is such an individual process, what works for me may not work for …
You really made me get out of this “social break” of mine as in right now I’m having my summer vacation and I WAS GIVEN PILE OF HOMEWORK. And in order to complete the work I’ve been not answering any of my friends call and replying to their messages. Your article made me realize that I don’t need to avoid my social life in order to get work done
Some things that I would like to do to enhance my performance and life in general this academic year:- 1. Being comfortable with discomfort. I will always step out my comfort zone even if I feel uneasy whether it is to participate in class, or ask questions, doing another set at the gym, or reaching out to a friend to ask or offer assistance/ going out of my way to socialize and make plans on Saturdays etc 2. Take everything seriously so everything takes me seriously I will iron my uniform in the morning, dress neatly, clean my room every morning, wake up at the same time whether I feel like it or not, go to the gym whether the weather outside is hot or cold, complete all my homework they day before because the pain of demotivation is never as severe as the pain of failure and being behind. 3. mentality shift Acceptance. I will always have patience and not lose my shit over school. I will understand any consequences that I’m going through and assume that everyone else is going through it. I will ask myself “how can I deal with this situation in a way that will differentiate me from the rest of the world?” And make that my next move. 4. days when I’m not feeling okay in case of mental or physical emergency I will immediately drop all my work and consider a rest day to show my confidence and trust in myself and my care for myself and where my priorities stand. 5. armour and weapons for this war In order for me to work at my full potential and efficiency I must be in the perfect mental, physical, emotional and spiritual state. I must get rid of all self doubt that I have and focus on one goal. I must persevere and make the 2 variables of highest value- focus x time= work done. 6. balance In order to achieve a lever of perfection in every stream of my life, social, physical, academic etc I must have a balance. A schedule in place. 5 days a week for school, 1 day for socializing entirely and 1 day as a rest day entirely. 7 days of gym to keep track my mental and physical health. 7. looking forward to something Looking forward to some day or weekly occurrence will keep me going, for me that’s a Sunday. I’ll do my weekly hair care routine, cut my nails, massage my face and neck with a gua sha, do my pedicure, have coffee(first time in a week) and watch a movie. ahhhh I can’t wait to go back to school and romanticise the hell out of my life while acing the shit outta school<3
My day: Wake up at 5:30 am get ready rest breakfast +anything else walk to school at 7:00 and arrive by 7:20. 7:35 am school starts and school ends at 2:35 pm. Right after sport practice starts or any other clubs. Go home at 4 or 5. Get home shower and eat. Then study and finish all assignments at around 8 pm. get ready to sleep. In conclusion I have no time for that at all unless it’s weekend 😔 I think I do get really productive. But I have no time to hang out with anyone unless it’s during those extracurriculars. I wish I could change the time I did activities or the time I had classes but it’s not possible here in my city and state. 😞
I’ve joined Tally classes with my friend😁😅, I’m a science student though. But it’s quite refreshing as I get an hour’s break after my self study session ends and before my tuition class starts😊 It’s productive and refreshing also u get to learn some new skills. ✨️ It’s really a good idea to involve in a group activity where u can socialize and at the same time be productive 😊 Love u faye ❤️💖

Hey Faye! I like to do activities like singing, dancing writing, drama public speaking and stuff like that. But lately it has been so stressful. I’ve just entered junior year and my life feels like hell. I hardly get any time for self studying. Plus school and coaching classes are going on with full speed. Moreover, the teachers keep giving me responsibilities then and there during the free periods at school. But when I reach home. After the coaching classes I just procrastinate and I’m not able to focus. I have a lot of backlogs going on and it feels so overwhelming. Hope your article will help. Thank You!!!!

Hello Faye! So there are these other StudyTubers called Mike and Matty, not sure if you’ve heard of them, but anyway they started this new show type of thing on their website recently about a Sci Fi world in the future focusing on this academy called Cajun Koi Academy (this is still study related though). I can’t really explain it fully to you, you should probably go and check out their website and that new series… But anyway, my point is that they’re actually looking to feature some other StudyTubers in that series, people like you, sooo would you like to collab with them on it?

step 1: lose your life you won’t need to balance your studies and your social life if you never had one in the first place step 2: drop your emotion without emotion, there is no need to feel stressed, lonely, etc. step 3: a s c e n d t o m a c h i n e now you can achieve optimal results without feeling stressed out and balancing your (non-existent) social life hope thus helps

You know what I live in a family where I have to work and if I don’t my family members would taunt me entire day and then there is my mom’s sister who come everyday and if I don’t talk with her she would say that I am a loner. They wouldn’t help me to find what problems I am having they would just waste my time talking about family issues all the time. I am having a lot of school work to do what shall I do . I am tired and depressed I feel uneasy all the time can you suggest what I shall do
im showing this article to my friends. i do ballet, taekwando, figure skating, piano, japanese classes, work, study and school. i still have time to do fun things as well. i ALWAYS get asked: how do u handle it? how do u get everything done? and the simple answer is i manage my time well! you can get sooo much done in a day if you are motivated, and dedicated .
i am a cheerdancer and i have practice after classes and to think that our class is whole day from morning until 5:00 pm / 17:00, 2 hours per subject and sometimes we have so many homework which is a bit difficult but i made it! i am now grade 12 and time management is a must really *sorry for the grammar school 😅
YES GUYS! Please. If you don’t have room or are struggling, it is okay to quit. Do it for you. I refused to quit AP Physics, even when I was close to failing because I told myself I could do it and prove people wrong. But I couldn’t. On top of that, I was in so many extracurriculars! It’s okay to quit things! When you get so stressed that you don’t care anymore, that’s when you start to reevaluate.
I wish I could plan this way. I feel like blocking off time for designated activities would really give me more time to do get more out of my day, but you know it’s hard. I don’t know how many people can relate, but as someone who’s had depression for a long time, it’s like a random bout of depression comes, messes up my entire schedule, and I’m completely incapable of moving, eating, or even sleeping.
Thank you for this article, I just spent like an hour trying to accurately estimate my weekly time table, it turns out I’m way more tight on time than I thought. I pretty much went over the 168 hours, though a lot of my extra curricular hour are not fixed/different depending on the week and stuff. But this method helped me see how much time I have left for relaxing free time or time I have left to work on my extracurriculars.
I can’t handle schedules so I just write when I have a deadline (eg I need to turn in homework on monday), and then I check my planner for deadlines for the next few days and do what I need for them, and if it’s a bigger task I just mark in my planner a whole day as a day for that task (if I had an exam on monday I’d block out sunday and saturday for studying, and maybee set how big part of my materials I need to go through on saturday, but I’m not very stric about that) That way I have a lot of flexibility in my schedule and I choose when during the day or even week I’ll do my tasks so I don’t feel stressed out if I’m tired or something and I don’t do anything on a particular day
I wish I had some extracurriculars to do because I never really did any I mean I did boxing kinda but that finished quickly and I used to do swimming lessons at like 10 but I never had a extracurricular that I stayed with and liked and won awards in but I want to join one that I can do I’m 17 nearly 18 but I feel its too late😅
For me i have a bunch of extracurriculars like football, art, athletics, weight lifting, coding, chess, cube, guitar, singing, dancing(hip hop),geology, skating, editing, writing(I write books and poetry),reading, baking,French, gardening and then I have to self study and do homework and I also have online extra classes. Most of these come under hobbies but I take them seriously and spend alot of time on them. I’m thinking to cut down most of these but I am passionate about all of them and again I’m passionate about academics as well.😢
Any tips? My school starts at 6:30 meaning I have to wake up at 5. Then school ends at 4 and I get home at 4:30. I have football (soccer) at 5:00 to 7:00. Then I have to shower in 30 minutes taking me to 7:30. Lastly I have hours of homework as I get hw for every subject every day. Not to mention my studying. I end up going to bed at around 12 to 1 am on average. This wouldn’t be so bad, but I have to wake up super early meaning I don’t get much sleep. What do I do? I’m super tired tbh
i have a FREAKIN 14 CLASSES per week and 3 extracurriculars that i need to take care bcs it works like an organization also my grades are not that good for a certain classes and i do have another side projects and extra classes outside the school and to make it worst i can’t really find a time to work out and make my own healthy life and my school starts at 6.30am. any tips or motivation for balancing a too hectic life like mine? :””)
I’m having a really hard time managing school and dance, I dance everyday, I go straight from school to the studio and dance until 9-9:30 with no break and then get home around 10. By the time I’m all showered and changed, it’s almost 11 so I have to go to sleep. Can anyone help me out? I also dance on weekends 10-7:30 but doing homework just then isn’t enough.
I have 13+ classes.I don’t want to study them all, but there’s no choice. Also i have extra classes every day(not in school), they’re for my future, because school doesn’t really teach anything, it just takes your time and energy(‘cos it’s like 7 hours of school every day + saturday, also loads of homework every day) So i don’t have “me” time or “friends” time.I barely handle school and my anxiety. I’m really tired and i don’t have any desires anymore but sleep(and i even can’t get this one thing)
While the thought of being organized like this is very appealing to me, I am never able to follow through with them. Instead, I set out time for the things I HAVE to do like piano, school work, or working out. Anything else is just a free fall. Maybe I’ll clean my room, maybe I’ll do some reading, or maybe I’ll watch some youtube.
This looks ……….complicated I don’t give a set time for a work. Like for example, If I write learn math from 2-4, sometimes I have more to finish or sometimes I finish it faster than deadline. So timings don’t work for me. I just get started with a work and move on with the next after I finish it.
I love this article because I have a lot to do in one day, Piano lessons, korean classes, Flute lessons, studying tests, Taekwondo, AMC 8 tutor, JEII tutor, Reading Town tutor, church, MOEMS (Math Olympiads), art lessons, and etc. I feel like I barely have any time to do something at the most I have at least 30-40 minutes for YouTube and other stuff. But now I can use this article to manage everything so I can finish a lot in one day! So thank you so much and continue with the amazing articles!💞❤😍😆
I noticed that in American schools, they have less classes to take (at least form what I learned pls confirm), because here in Germany it’s a bit different (if it’s true..). I have assigned classes to take, these are the following: Latin or french, English, German, Math, Biology for one semester, ‘economics’ the next semester, an added subject (there are three to choose from at my school), PE, Geography(bilingual), History(bilingual), Chemistry, Ethics (substitute for religion class), Physics, music class half a semester, art class half a semester. Yeah I think I got everything. The added subject is different at different schools, some schools have different systems, I described the classes from my grade(8th). For comparison I got in a week as a total 34 lessons, each 45min. long. Have a nice day.
