Child care benefits are provided by employers to help employees manage the demands of working and parenting, addressing three core problems: finding care, subsidized care, and backup care. Employers with 5,000 or more employees can benefit from 37 offering access to backup child care, 16 subsidize child care, and 10 offering employer-provided child care credits.
Three ways to help employees with child care include flexible work schedules, offering childcare coverage to recruit and attract the right workers, providing child care subsidies, and offering dependent medical benefits, subsidized daycare, and even onsite child care services.
Employers may also provide child care subsidies, such as day care tuition reimbursement, to financially support employees struggling to cover childcare expenses. These subsidies can be part of the employee package, such as paying a certain percentage of daycare costs each month or reimbursed for up to $5,000 per year to pay for qualified childcare expenses.
Childcare benefits for employees can help ease the child care burden, support employee well-being, and foster a caring work culture. Employers may also partner directly with a child care company to offer reservations at daycare centers, which may include benefits such as dependent care FSA, backup care, childcare subsidies, paid leave, and/or onsite childcare services.
Three ways employers can support their employees through the crisis by offering smart solutions that help parents find and fund child care: onsite child care; subsidies for care, whether it’s onsite or elsewhere; help with backup child care for when the usual provider is unavailable. By setting goals for their childcare policy, considering employees’ needs and preferences, creating a budget, familiarizing themselves with legal and compliance requirements, selecting an appropriate benefits provider, communicating the policy to the workforce, streamlining enrollment and administration, and obtaining feedback and review, employers can create a child care benefits package that benefits their employees.
