The best time to invest in a quality pair of maternity leggings is during the early-mid stages of the second trimester, or as soon as the baby starts to show signs of growth. Leggings are available in various fabrics, but for pregnancy, it is essential to choose a soft, breathable, stretchy fabric that is not see-through.
Pregnancy leggings should feel flexible and supportive, never being too tight or restrictive. Some moms prefer over-bump or under-bump styles, as they ensure comfort all day long. Can I wear normal leggings while pregnant?
Wearing tights during pregnancy is acceptable, especially after a bump has grown. Some brands offer shaped panels to support the bump. However, synthetic fabrics can cause sweating and increase the risk of thrush, which thrives in warm, moist conditions. Natural remedies include using high-quality cotton or cotton gusset tights, not wearing tights daily, and wearing leggings made from natural fibers like cotton, bamboo, or hemp. Hold-up stockings are another option, but they can irritate varicose veins, a common pregnancy niggle.
What is the difference between maternity leggings and regular leggings?
Maternity leggings are designed to accommodate a growing belly, providing additional support and comfort. They are made from stretchy, breathable materials and are designed to grow with the wearer, offering a snug yet comfortable fit throughout pregnancy. Maternity leggings often feature a built-in panel to accommodate the growing belly, offering gentle support without feeling restrictive. This design can help alleviate common pregnancy discomforts, such as lower back pain and swollen ankles, by promoting better circulation. Hotmilk’s range of comfortable and supportive maternity leggings are perfect for home, work, or leisure, and paired with a My Necessity Maternity and Nursing Cami is a wardrobe staple.
Choosing the perfect maternity leggings during pregnancy can have health benefits, such as improving circulation and reducing the risk of varicose veins and swelling. Compression leggings, in particular, apply gentle pressure to the legs, promoting blood flow and reducing swelling. However, it is essential to ensure that the leggings are not too tight, as excessive compression can impede blood flow and lead to discomfort or health issues. If you experience pain or numbness, it’s a sign that your leggings are too tight and you should switch to a different pair or size.
When can you start wearing maternity leggings?
Maternity clothes are often considered by many mothers around the end of the first trimester or beginning of the second trimester, as they are expected to feel like they are starting to “pop”. However, many mothers find their feelings on maternity clothing evolve over the course of their pregnancy. They may initially resist buying maternity clothes but change their mind once the waistband becomes painfully tight.
Alternatively, they may be pleasantly surprised to discover that looser dresses or shirts continue to fit as their pregnancy progresses. It is important to consider the unique needs and preferences of each mother during the process of pregnancy.

When should I switch to maternity leggings?
During pregnancy, it’s essential to switch to maternity clothes when you feel tight or uncomfortable. Most women buy maternity clothes around 12-16 weeks into the first or second trimester. However, some women may need to buy them earlier or later depending on their pregnancy. There are seven signs that suggest it’s time to buy maternity clothes: tight clothes around the waist and hips, difficulty in sitting, standing, or bending over freely, difficulty in buttoning or zipping pants, pressure on the tummy or skin, riding up tops, tight or uncomfortable shirts, tight or uncomfortable bras, straps digging into the skin, and overflowing cups.
How many pairs of maternity pants do you need?
Choosing a few maternity wardrobe staples is essential for a successful pregnancy. Quality maternity jeans, basic black leggings, and a minimum of three to five maternity T-shirts or tanks in colors that pair well with your existing wardrobe are essential. These versatile pieces can be worn under a favorite blazer, jacket, or stylish cardigan. Investing in two to three versatile dresses can be dressed up or down for work or play, and a fancier dress for a wedding, maternity photoshoot, or baby shower is also recommended.
Seasonal items like a winter coat or maternity swimsuit may also be necessary. Two buzzwords for maternity clothing are “basics” and “essentials”. Some items may sound familiar in your pre-pregnancy closet, but others are unique to accommodate and flatter your bump. For example, stretchy maternity T-shirts in white, gray, and black are a great addition to a pair of jeans.
Should I size up when buying maternity clothes?
Maternity clothing should be tailored to the individual’s pre-pregnancy size, as each pregnancy is unique. If you prefer a relaxed fit or have a large bust, consider ordering a size up. If you have gained extra weight or are expecting twins, consider a size up from your regular size.
Maternity jeans may feel slightly snug at first, but they will stretch and become softer with each wear. It’s important to stay with your regular Australian pre-pregnancy size and avoid slipping down as you walk.
Pants and leggings can vary in style, with some preferring over-the-belly styles for support, while others prefer nothing touching their belly. This preference may change in later trimesters, as skin becomes tight, itchy, and sensitive. Some underbelly leggings are ideal for post-birth recovery.

I am a PT and spend a lot of time standing, i have a pair of align and for me that is NOT how i want leggings to be unless i am chilling. I am used to some compression, i need it for my legs to feel good during the day . Thank you 🙂
