How To Mend A Denim Short’S Zipper?

This video tutorial teaches how to fix a broken zipper on jeans or pants. Jean zippers are usually durable but can sometimes break. To fix a broken zipper, you can remove top stops and teeth, squeeze the slider back to its original position, or replace the broken zipper by cutting its teeth and sewing on a new one.

To fix a stuck zipper, rub graphite or laundry detergent on the teeth to lubricate the zipper for easier sliding. If the zipper won’t stay closed, clean it. Place the zipper in the upright position before connecting it to the zipper tracks. If one of the zipper sides can be attached back on, try again.

If the zipper pull fell off, use an extra paper clip or key ring. Rub a candle or shortening along the length of the zipper on both sides to loosen it and make it easier to open. Cut through the very bottom of the zipper, but above the damage. Restart the zipper at the new starting point and stitch up.

To fix a broken or stuck zipper, take a replacement slider from an old pair of jeans, remove the broken slider, add the new slider, and sew it up. Quick and easy fixes include using pliers, a screwdriver, tweezers, and a screwdriver.

  • I can’t express the love I have for you. I messed up the zipper on the only pair of jeans I own (because shopping for jeans that fit nice is like navigating a minefield) and I was so bummed about it. Now my jeans are fixed and I didnt have to spend any money! I hope your skin is clear and your hair is silky.

  • Hey!!! I know it’s over a year after the fact, but I hope you’re still responding to comments… Is there any way to get around the sewing part at the end? I really need these jeans but I don’t own a sewing kit, nor do I know how to sow :/ Could I leave the zipper as is and use it kind of like I would a coat, or would that lead to more problems? If that’s the case, I’m still grateful for this article and I hope you’re doing good!! Thanks for putting this out for those of us in need!!

  • My zipper suddenly started jamming and required some effort and finagling to get it up and down and if it wasn’t pulled up correctly all the way, it would pop open in the center. So instead of being happy that at least my zipper was working when care was taken, I forcibly zipped and unzipped them rapidly and aggressively with a pair of pliers and then just ripped the entire slide off. So no there’s no zipper slide. Now what? I’m pretty sure I have an old ripped pair of jeans with a donor slide if that helps.
